Rev. Maria E. Gullo, MSPC, has spent more than 20 years teaching the contemplative dimension of the Gospel of Christ. She is a Spiritual Director, retreat leader, ordained minister, and commissioned presenter for Contemplative Outreach. Her work is Christian, quiet, and unhurried. If that suits you, here is how to approach it.
Start with her guided prayer and meditation audio on the Insight Timer app. Her teacher page there lists 37K followers, and it is the most visible and free place to hear her voice and pacing before committing to anything else. The audio is guided rather than lecture-based, so it works even if you have never practiced Centering Prayer and simply want to find out whether the silence and gentle structure suit you.
A caution: the catalog of individual track titles isn't documented in the material available, so I can't point you to a named session. Browse her page, pick a shorter guided session, and listen to it the whole way through. Her website, thedeeperconnection.org, is the place to confirm current offerings.
Her YouTube channel. Search for The Deeper Connection, at youtube.com/c/TheDeeperConnection. It's another free way to sample her teaching. Its contents haven't been catalogued, so look around and see what's there.
A Centering Prayer or Lectio Divina workshop. These methods are easier to absorb in a group with a teacher. Centering Prayer is a practice of silent, consenting attention to God, and Lectio Divina is the slow, prayerful reading of scripture. No prior training is typically required. No dated events were available at the time of writing, so check the website or subscribe to the ministry's communications.
Her audio on iTunes or CDBaby. If the Insight Timer sessions work for you, these platforms offer permanent, downloadable copies.
Spiritual direction, the one-to-one accompaniment she offers, is a deeper commitment. Consider it after you've settled into the basics.
Expect a gentle, encouraging presence and an unhurried pace. That pace is the quality people mention first. Silence is the most unfamiliar element for most newcomers, and her approach gives you room to notice it without pushing you toward any particular emotional result. In a workshop, you'll find brief teaching and extended silence. In the standard Contemplative Outreach method, practice periods run around twenty minutes. Retreats and lectures bring scripture and prayerful reading alongside the silence.
The presentation is plain. It is closer to monastic stillness than to polished wellness media.
Treating it as generic mindfulness. Her framework is explicitly Christian, built on scripture, Jesus, and the Gospel. If you want a secular practice, or Buddhist, Hindu, or Sufi methods, this is not that.
Expecting Centering Prayer to be a concentration technique. It uses a sacred word as a gesture of consent to God's presence, not as a tool for focus. Experienced meditators often arrive with breath-focused or mantra habits and need to adjust.
Expecting stimulation. The work prioritizes stillness. If you find it sparse, that is the design, not a flaw.
Treating it as therapy. Her casework includes addiction, anxiety, divorce, loss, and disillusionment with religion, and she holds a Master's in Pastoral Counseling and Spiritual Direction. But spiritual direction is relational and reflective, and it is not a substitute for medical or psychological care.
Her own ministry grew out of a difficult stretch of life, including a divorce, that led her into the contemplative way of following Jesus. That origin shapes how she speaks about suffering. The work tends to land hardest during seasons of loss, divorce, anxiety, or struggles with addiction, and for people disillusioned with religion who still want a path within the Christian tradition. If you feel wounded and want movement toward a deeper relationship with God, your true self, and others, which is the stated purpose of The Deeper Connection, you are the audience.
Day 1: Open her Insight Timer page and listen to one guided session straight through. Don't evaluate it, just sit.
Day 2: Repeat the same session. Notice what changes when it's familiar.
Day 3: Try a different guided track. Note which pacing and length suit you.
Day 4: Watch something on her YouTube channel, The Deeper Connection.
Day 5: Return to audio and sit for around twenty minutes, the typical Centering Prayer length, using whichever guided session you found most helpful.
Day 6: Visit thedeeperconnection.org. Look for upcoming Centering Prayer or Lectio Divina workshops and subscribe to the ministry's communications.
Day 7: Sit once more, then ask yourself whether the silence felt like rest or like restlessness, and whether the Christian vocabulary felt like home or friction. If it felt like home, register for a workshop. If you want one-to-one accompaniment, inquire about spiritual direction.
One week won't tell you everything, but it will tell you whether this path fits.
