Joseph Le Page is the founder and director of Integrative Yoga Therapy, which he started in 1993. It is a pioneering yoga therapy training program in the United States, and the site says more than 3,000 therapists have been trained worldwide. He describes wanting to create "a training program with the focus on Yoga as a healing art which would be student centered, non-dogmatic and in alignment with the latest approaches to teaching, while remaining deeply rooted in the vast treasury of wisdom within the Yoga tradition."
His approach brings together asana, pranayama, mudra, Yoga Nidra, mantra and meditation. These tools are used in therapeutic classes for specific groups and in one-on-one yoga therapy sessions. The work is built around the model of the Five Koshas and aims to support health and healing across the physical, energetic, psycho-emotional, wisdom and spiritual dimensions of being. His Insight Timer teacher page says Integrative Yoga Therapy grew out of his life experiences, his training as a Kripalu Yoga teacher, his master's degree work in experiential education, and a lifelong interest in mind-body health.
Joseph began teaching yoga therapy in hospital settings in 1995, with a program called Yoga for Heart Patients at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. That program became the basis of the Healthy Heart Program, a 12-week yoga therapy course for stress-related conditions. It was first implemented in 2005 in Santa Catarina, Brazil, in partnership with public health services. He continues as its director.
He is co-founder and director of the Enchanted Mountain Yoga Center in Garopaba, Brazil, where Integrative Yoga Therapy is taught in Portuguese. He also teaches online. He co-authored Yoga Toolbox for Teachers and Students and Mudras for Healing and Transformation, both published by Integrative Yoga. His workshops often focus on mudras and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and he writes articles on the Sutras. He has spoken at conferences including Yoga Journal, the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and the Kripalu Yoga Teacher's Association.
