Where to Start with Girish: A Beginner's Guide

Girish is a kirtan artist: a singer, tabla player and mantra practitioner who leads call-and-response chanting. One caveat first: no albums or books are listed in his public information, so this guide points you to the live formats he offers, which appear to be the core of his work.

The Best Entry Point: A Live Kirtan Alongside a Yoga Class

Start with Girish playing live music during a yoga class. The stakes are low, because you're already there to move and breathe, and the music arrives as part of the practice. You get the essential experience of his work, call-and-response chanting, without having to decide whether you "do" kirtan. He sings a line, you sing it back, and the sound of the room does the rest.

If you can't find a class like this, a one-off chant session is the next-best way in. Prioritize live over anything else. This is participatory music, and listening from a distance misses the point.

The Next Three Places to Go

1. A chant workshop. Once you've felt the call-and-response, a workshop slows it down. You spend more time with Sanskrit mantra, how the sounds are shaped, and why the repetition works. It turns something you felt into something you understand.

2. A multi-day chant camp or retreat. These combine chant, rhythm, breath and shared singing over several days. Here you meet the Sacred Choir, the group at the heart of his gatherings. Every voice is welcome and no musical experience is needed. The choir's response becomes the heartbeat of the practice, so your voice becomes part of the music rather than an audience's reaction to it. If you want to go further, retreats also offer simple guidance on harmonium, guitar, drums and keyboard.

3. Attuned Soundscapes. This is the quieter side of his work: custom healing soundscapes tuned to your own singing bowls. It suits you if you already own bowls or prefer stillness to group singing. (He also created Saraswati Muse, an essential oil blend honoring the Goddess of Creative Flow and Soulful Wisdom, which makes a natural companion to creative work or practice.)

What to Expect the First Time

Expect to sing. Even in a yoga class, you'll likely be invited to join in, and the invitation is sincere. The lines are short and repeated, so you learn them in seconds. Expect Sanskrit, a harmonium-style devotional sound, and tabla rhythm underneath. The tempo often builds, and the room's energy builds with it.

Expect to feel self-conscious for the first few minutes. That usually passes once you realize no one is listening to you individually; you're one voice among many.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"I can't sing." This is the biggest one. The format is designed for people who can't, and the group carries you.

"It's a performance." Kirtan isn't a concert. If you sit and watch, you're missing the half of it that belongs to you.

"I need to be religious." The material is devotional, but the stated aim of his work is joy, healing and freedom through giving voice to what lives within us. You can come as a curious participant and take what's useful.

"Repetition means boredom." The repetition is the technique. Meaning arrives through the loop, not despite it.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land hardest in transitions and in stuck periods: after a loss, during burnout, when work has become all head and no body, or when you feel isolated. Singing in a group offers something screens and solo meditation often can't: breath, vibration and other people at once. It also lands for creative people who have gone quiet, and for yoga practitioners who sense their practice is missing a voice.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Read Girish's site and find a live yoga-class kirtan or chant event near you or online. Book it.

Day 2: Spend ten minutes humming or chanting a simple Sanskrit mantra aloud. The goal is to get past your own embarrassment, not to be good.

Day 3: Do a breath practice for five minutes, then chant for five more. Notice how your body feels afterward.

Day 4: Rest, or sit quietly with any bowls you own and listen to the sound decay.

Day 5: Attend your live session. Sit near the front, sing every response, and don't film it.

Day 6: Write down what shifted: mood, breath, energy. Check the details of his chant workshops and retreats.

Day 7: Decide your next step: a workshop, a chant camp, or an Attuned Soundscape. Then chant for ten minutes on your own to close the week.
