Denise Shanté (she/her) is a multidimensional designer, creative co-conspirator and intuitive writer. She creates moments for people to dream, design, write and feel the futures they long for and love, with care, intimacy and liberation as throughlines in her work. She describes herself as a Black, queer and disabled woman who brings lifetimes of body knowledge and visionary rigor to her practice.
Her work takes the form of storytelling technologies, worldmaking, experience design, care-centric guidance, creative self-practice and intimate communities. She was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, with evolutions in Atlanta and Baltimore. She describes herself as the daughter and granddaughter of poets, teachers, community organizers and caregivers.
Denise holds a Master's degree in Social Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art's Center for Social Design. That experience led her toward a liberatory, Black feminist-grounded practice of design. She has been Care Pod Lead at the Design Justice Network, a Weaver with the Center for Ungovernable Study, and Founding Steward of Black Womxn Flourish. She has also taught design justice sessions and modules in MICA's MA Social Design program.
As a facilitator, she designs and leads gatherings for educational institutions, art centers, healthcare organizations, harm reduction and recovery centers, civic leadership programs and grassroots movements. Her tools include guided reflection, visioning, collage, ritual design and values identification. She also created Liberatory Libations, a virtual experiment in community-crafted, booze-free cocktail rituals for BIPOC creative activists.
Writing is central to her practice. Her work includes the book collection "may we dream and design felt futures," visual poetry in "An Encyclopedia of Radical Helping" from Thick Press, and a contribution to "Black Powerful: Black Voices Reimagine Revolution," curated by Natasha Marin. She also wrote the self-published zine "The Life-Giving Consequences of Creative Rest." She writes and works with chronic illnesses and a commitment to sobriety, extending tenderness to her bodymindspirit. She enjoys curating playlists, communing with nature, and studying ceramics, eco printing and printmaking.
Worth Knowing
Denise Shanté is a Black, queer, disabled designer and intuitive writer who operates at the intersection of social design, facilitation, and visionary practice. Her work is grounded in a commitment to care, intimacy, and liberation—but not as abstract concepts. She designs concrete experiences: community rituals, writing practices, reflective gatherings, and imaginative spaces where people can practice dreaming and designing the futures they actually want to live in. What draws people to her work is the specificity of her approach: she brings both rigorous design thinking (shaped by her Master's degree in Social Design from MICA) and embodied knowledge rooted in her experience as a disabled Black woman. She's not offering generic spiritual bypass or empty positivity; instead, she's creating methodologies and gatherings that take people's material conditions, grief, and creative capacity seriously. Her reach spans grassroots movements, educational institutions, harm reduction centers, and art spaces—audiences who are looking for facilitation and storytelling that actually honors complexity.
