A Teacher Who Came to Stillness by a Winding Road

Darius Bashar is a meditation teacher, creativity coach, and portrait photographer based in Toronto. Those three titles might seem like separate careers, but in his work they function as one practice: helping people become more honest, less afraid, and more willing to be seen. He is the founder of Artist Morning, an online community built around meditating and journaling together, and he has become a recognizable voice for creative people who struggle with perfectionism and self-doubt.

His path to this work, by his own account, was not a straight line. That fact matters, because it shapes the kind of teacher he has become: one who speaks from the middle of the creative struggle rather than from above it.

Early Career and the Detours That Mattered

Bashar's professional life began in Toronto's start-up world and in advertising, environments that prize speed, polish, and visible success. He went on to serve as Director of Programming and Co-chair of TEDxToronto, a role that placed him at the center of a community devoted to ideas and the people who share them. Curating a stage for other people's voices is a particular kind of education, and it is not hard to see how it informed his later focus on helping people speak with more truth.

Details about his birthplace and childhood are not part of the public record, so this profile begins with his working life.

The Turning Point

At almost 30, Bashar went back to film school in Vancouver. For someone with an established career, that is a meaningful decision, a willingness to become a beginner again. The move led first to cinematography, then to fashion photography in 2015, portrait photography in 2016, and writing in 2017.

Each step moved him closer to the human face and the human story. Fashion gave way to portraiture, and portraiture gave way to words. Alongside that outward progression ran an inward one. Bashar has written openly about the years he spent hiding his struggles, and about how sharing hard truths can make room for others to do the same. That openness is central to his teaching. It reframes vulnerability as a form of generosity rather than a liability.

What He Is Known For

Bashar's core contribution is a blend of grounded creative tools and spiritual depth, offered to people who want to make things but find themselves stalled by fear. His teaching addresses perfectionism, self-doubt, and the fear of being seen, the quiet obstacles that keep many writers, artists, and makers from sharing their work.

The vehicle for much of this is Artist Morning, which offers space, support, and structure for anyone who wants to meditate and journal together. It includes a free weekly meditation group built for creative people, an accountability group for a daily writing practice, and a broader community of creators who support and celebrate one another. The emphasis on consistency and companionship is practical: a daily practice is easier to keep when others are keeping it alongside you.

Major Projects

Meditation teaching. On Insight Timer, the world's largest meditation app, Bashar has guided hundreds of meditations for tens of thousands of people around the world. On YouTube, he shares guided meditations made specifically for creators and artists. His Spotify presence, with roughly 49,000 followers, extends that reach into audio.

Artist Morning. The community described above, combining a free weekly meditation group, a daily writing accountability group, and a peer network of creators.

HEARTshots™. A photographic project that uses photography as a channel for inner exploration and self-love. Rather than treating the portrait as a product, it treats the session as a space for reflection.

NoStrangers.Art. A project documenting short, honest conversations with strangers on the street as he photographs them. It extends his belief that real connection can happen quickly when someone is willing to be direct and curious.

Photography and publication. Bashar has photographed authors and thought leaders, and his work has appeared in publications including TIME, USA TODAY, and Oprah.com.

The Current Chapter

Today, Bashar's work centers on Artist Morning and his guided teaching online. The format is notable for how accessible it is: a free weekly meditation group, a daily writing practice with accountability, and recorded meditations available on major platforms. His photography continues alongside, carrying what the biography describes as "the same spirit as his teaching."

This is a practice built on repetition rather than spectacle. The work is less about a single breakthrough than about showing up regularly, which suits a teacher whose subject is sustainable creativity.

Cultural Significance

Bashar reaches a specific and often underserved audience: creative people who are quietly stuck. Many of them are not lacking talent or ideas. They are held back by perfectionism, by the weight of expectation, or by the discomfort of being witnessed. Mainstream meditation content tends to speak to stress or sleep in general terms; Bashar speaks to the particular anxieties of making and sharing work.

His significance also lies in how he connects disciplines that are usually kept apart. Meditation, journaling, and photography might seem like unrelated crafts, but in his hands they share a purpose: attention. To meditate is to pay attention inwardly; to write is to record what attention finds; to photograph a person is to attend to someone else with care.

Perhaps most importantly, he models a kind of honesty that creative culture often lacks. By writing about the years he spent hiding his struggles, he gives others permission to stop performing certainty. In an era of curated personas, that is a quiet but valuable contribution.

His career, spanning advertising, TEDx curation, cinematography, photography, writing, and teaching, suggests someone who kept following what felt true, even when it meant starting over. For the many people who find themselves at a similar crossroads, that example may be as instructive as any meditation he guides.
