Introduction: A Voice Treated as an Instrument

Anandra George is a kīrtan artist, Sanskrit mantra teacher and sound yoga pioneer who divides her time between Hawai'i and India. She is the founder of Heart of Sound, a school and body of work built on a simple but demanding premise: that the voice is an instrument for self-growth and community upliftment, and that singing devotional material well is itself a form of devotion. Her credentials sit unusually close to her art. She is a yoga therapist certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT) and an E-RYT 500 teacher, and she brings 27 years of teaching and 37 years of musical experience to her work.

Roots in India

Her story begins in India. Anandra has studied there extensively since 1997, and the country remains the ground from which her work grows. The public record does not document her birthplace, hometown or childhood, so this profile starts where the documented path starts: with a long apprenticeship in Indian sacred sound.

She describes her teaching as shared at the behest of her beloved gurus. The relationship to lineage in her work is therefore relational and teacher-based rather than an institutional affiliation she announces. Her practice sits within bhakti, the devotional path in which sound, name and song carry the practice. Her training continues today in Delhi, where she studies Hindustani vocal music with Pandit Baldev Raj Verma. That study anchors her singing in classical North Indian rāga rather than in a generic world-music idea of kīrtan.

From Practice to Pedagogy

The facts available do not record a single dramatic turning point, and it would be wrong to invent one. What the record does show is a steady movement from student to teacher. After years of study in India, she began sharing Sanskrit sounds, mantra meditation and Indian music with audiences around the world. Since 2009, tens of thousands of students from more than 65 countries have taken part in her teaching.

That reach is notable for a sacred musician working largely outside commercial channels. Her Spotify and Apple Music profiles are not listed, and people tend to find her through courses, festivals, retreats and free online chant experiences rather than through a streaming catalogue.

What She Is Known For

Many kīrtan leaders are either performers or teachers. Anandra has built something that joins the two with a clinical seriousness. Heart of Sound, which she describes as the world's first yoga teacher training based entirely on the transformative power of sound, offers 200-, 300- and 500-hour Yoga Alliance trainings in mantra and nāda yoga. The curriculum includes Sanskrit sounds anatomy, a therapeutic approach to mantra, āyurvedic principles of sound and mental health, yogāsana for sound-based practices, and Indian rāga-based kīrtan leadership taught so that non-musicians can absorb it. It also includes vocal coaching for pleasure rather than performance.

The central conviction running through it is that vocal competence is a form of devotion. Students are expected to sing well, not merely sincerely, and to receive direct feedback on pronunciation. The teaching deliberately avoids dogma and spiritual bypassing.

Major Projects

Several projects define her public work:

  • Heart of Sound. The teacher-training school, a member school of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Its training runs in English, German and Japanese, including a full 200-hour course in Japanese.
  • The Sacred Sound Stage. She founded this stage at the International Yoga Festival in Rishikesh, India.
  • Mantras for Peace. A global subtle activism project, whose Mantras for Peace Marathon is among her most widely shared free chant experiences.
  • Sacred Sanskrit Sounds. An online course on the anatomy of tuned mantra chanting.
  • Retreats. These include a seven-day Chant Retreat and Training at Swami's Yoga Retreat in the Sydney hinterland, which moves through Sāvitrī Gāyatrī mantra meditation and rāga-based kīrtan. They also include the Sound Rejuvenation Retreat in South India, which pairs deep chant with Kerala āyurvedic panchakarma and a Lalitā Sahasranāma pūja and satsang in an āśram setting.
  • Research and conference work. She has consulted on mantra fMRI research for India's National Institute of Mental Health and developed sound-based meditation workshops for the main TED conference in Vancouver.
  • An ethical framework. She created an open-source code of conduct against sexual harassment and guru abuse for yoga and spiritual festivals.

She has taught and sung at Yoga Fest Yokohama, Hanuman Festival, Bhaktifest and Wanderlust in the United States, True Nature in Japan, and the Xperience Festival in Germany in 2024. Her work has been featured in Hindi, Russian, Japanese, German and English press. No formal awards are listed in the public record.

The Sound of the Work

Her music is built on the voice first: Sanskrit mantra and kīrtan sung in a clear, trained delivery that prioritizes tuned pronunciation over ornamentation. The pacing is unhurried, with phrases unfolding slowly and repeating in ways suited to sustained chanting rather than verse-chorus structure. The aesthetic favors resonance and sustained tones over percussive drive. The public material does not specify accompanying instruments, and this profile leaves that detail open.

The Current Chapter

Today she lives and works between Hawai'i and India. On Kaua'i she leads a monthly Deep Chant Series for local residents and offers private sound rejuvenation retreats, and she recorded introductory videos for her YouTube channel from her tiny house on wheels there. Listed upcoming dates include India on January 23, 2027, Sydney, Australia on February 14, 2027, Germany on June 10, 2027, and India again on January 23, 2028. Her German-language retreats are taught with a German-speaking team. Because dates can shift with festival schedules, the Heart of Sound site, heartofsound.in, remains the reliable source.

Why She Matters

Anandra's significance lies in the combination she represents: a devotional musician with classical training, a clinically informed teacher, and a festival builder who takes the ethics of spiritual communities seriously. She reaches yoga teachers, sound healers, chant leaders and people who simply love mantra, and her programs welcome non-musicians and musicians alike.

Her work is not for everyone. Those looking for high-energy, call-and-response kīrtan built on crowd momentum, or for background music, may find her emphasis on tuned pronunciation, rāga structure and sustained chant demanding. For students who want rigor alongside devotion, that demand is the appeal. A newcomer can begin with the free chant experiences and the YouTube channel at youtube.com/@heartofsound, then move toward structured study if the approach resonates.

What her career suggests is a quiet but consequential argument: that sacred music is strengthened, not diminished, by craft, scholarship and accountability.
