About This Event

Description

Imagine stepping into a sacred space where your voice becomes prayer, where ancient Sanskrit mantras meet contemporary soul, and where a room full of strangers becomes one unified heart. This is the medicine of kirtan—and on Thursday, September 10, 2026, Grammy®-nominated kirtan master Jai Uttal and his collaborators invite you to experience it live at JaiPure in Montclair, NJ.

For nearly five decades, Jai Uttal has been a pioneering force in kirtan, weaving together Indian classical music, jazz, and folk traditions into transformative communal singing experiences that touch something deep and devotional in the human spirit. Whether you've chanted before or you're stepping into kirtan for the first time, this evening promises a journey inward through the power of your own voice—no musical training required, only an open heart.

This is not a concert to observe from a distance. It's a participatory ritual of sound, breath, and connection, led by artists who understand that singing together is one of humanity's most ancient and healing practices.

What to Expect

Expect a welcoming, unhurried evening of responsive call-and-response chanting, where Jai Uttal's instrumental mastery and voice guide the room through layers of mantra and melody. With Ben Leinbach and family members joining in, the experience deepens through rhythmic grooves, breath awareness, and the cumulative resonance of many voices singing as one. You'll leave with a sense of expansion, calm presence, and a tangible reminder of your own capacity to heal and connect through sound. No experience necessary—kirtan meets you where you are.

About the Artists & Teachers

Jai Uttal is a Grammy® Award-nominated multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and pioneering kirtan artist whose life work has centered on blending devotional practice with world music traditions. Over decades of teaching, recording, and performing, he has created a bridge between ancient Sanskrit chanting and contemporary musical forms, offering kirtan as a path to heart-opening, spiritual awakening, and communal joy. His approach honors both the integrity of the tradition and the authentic voice of each participant.

Ben Leinbach joins Jai Uttal as a Breathwork Facilitator, bringing conscious respiration practices into the evening's experience. Together, they create compositions and sonic environments that celebrate the breath of life and the power of collective intention.

Common Questions

FAQs

Jai Uttal's approach integrates breathwork as a central practice alongside call-and-response chanting, making this less about rote repetition and more about synchronized breath and embodied presence. His Grammy-nominated compositions move beyond traditional Sanskrit mantras into original material that weaves multiple musical traditions together, so expect a more compositionally sophisticated and introspective experience than a beginner's kirtan circle.
You don't need prior familiarity—kirtan by design welcomes newcomers to the melodies—but if you want to deepen your experience, albums like *Shri* and *Breath of Life* will give you a sense of his sonic world and the layered instrumentation (tabla, harmonium, voice) you'll encounter live. Knowing even one song beforehand can help you surrender more fully to the group experience rather than spending the first 20 minutes orienting.
Ben Leinbach is a world-class tabla (Indian hand drum) player and longtime musical collaborator who anchors Jai's compositions rhythmically and energetically. His presence transforms the show into a true musical dialogue rather than a solo performance, creating the kind of call-and-response between rhythm and melody that deepens collective trance and breath awareness.
Kirtan with Jai Uttal is participatory—you're invited and encouraged to chant call-and-response, but the emphasis here is on breathing together and embodied presence rather than vocal perfection or memorization. If you prefer to sit quietly and absorb the sound and breath work without singing, that's entirely honored; the practice meets you where you are.
