What is Jivamukti Yoga?

Jivamukti Yoga is a proprietary style of yoga created by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984, originating in New York City’s East Village. The name derives from the Sanskrit term jīvanmukti, where jiva is the individual living soul and mukti (like moksha) is liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth—thus “liberation while living”. Unlike fitness-focused approaches, Jivamukti presents what is Jivamukti yoga as a comprehensive spiritual path integrating vigorous vinyasa sequences with ethical activism, scriptural study, and devotional practice. The method codifies five central tenets—ahimsa (nonviolence), bhakti (devotion), dhyana (meditation), nada (sound), and shastra (scripture)—which distinguish it from purely physical yoga styles prevalent in the late twentieth century.

Origins & Lineage

Sharon Gannon and David Life met in 1983 in New York City; they created Jivamukti Yoga in 1984. In 1986 they traveled together to India and took the Sivananda teacher training program and met Swami Nirmalananda; upon their return, they opened the first Jivamukti Yoga Society in the East Village of New York City. In 1990 they began to practice Ashtanga Yoga with Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India, which became a foundational influence on the method’s vinyasa sequencing.

Their most influential gurus are Shri Shyamdas, Shri Swami Nirmalanda, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati and Shri Milanbaba Goswami. The Ashtanga influence is evident in the dynamic, breath-synchronized movement sequences, while the devotional and scriptural dimensions reflect Gannon’s initiation into the Pushti Marg Vaishnava lineage. The founders synthesized these influences with Western countercultural values—veganism, environmentalism, and social activism—creating a method that positioned yoga practice as inseparable from ethical living.

How It’s Practiced

A standard Jivamukti Open class follows a structured 90-minute format. Classes study ancient yogic texts, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and Hatha Yoga Pradipika, which form the philosophical foundation of the practice. Sessions typically begin with chanting in Sanskrit—often invocations from these classical texts—followed by a focus of the month (FOM), a thematic teaching exploring one aspect of yogic philosophy applied to contemporary life.

The asana sequence is vigorous and flowing, emphasizing Ashtanga-derived vinyasa with creative variations. The development of a sound body and mind through deep listening can be incorporated in a class using recorded music, spoken word, silence or even the teacher’s voice. Unlike silent practices, Jivamukti classes frequently feature curated playlists ranging from kirtan and mantra to punk rock and hip-hop, reflecting the founders’ backgrounds in New York’s downtown arts scene. Classes conclude with guided meditation and closing chants.

A non-violent, compassionate lifestyle extending to other animals, the environment, and all living beings, emphasizing ethical vegetarianism (veganism) and animal rights, is central to the method. Practitioners are encouraged to adopt veganism as a manifestation of ahimsa (nonviolence), and teacher trainings include discussions of animal ethics alongside asana instruction.

Jivamukti Yoga Today

Jivamukti Yoga spread from its original East Village studio to a global network of affiliated schools and certified teachers. The method gained cultural visibility in the 1990s when its New York studio became a gathering place for artists, musicians, and celebrities, positioning yoga within downtown Manhattan’s creative milieu. The method’s teachings gained wider dissemination through publications such as Jivamukti Yoga: Practices for Liberating Body and Soul, released in 2002 by Ballantine Books, which remains the definitive text outlining the five tenets and practice methodology.

Today, seekers encounter Jivamukti yoga through several formats: Open classes (the signature 90-minute vinyasa format incorporating all five tenets), Spiritual Warrior (a condensed 60-minute sequence for time-pressed students), Basic classes (multi-week courses teaching foundational postures), and Fundamentals (drop-in classes focusing on alignment). The method also offers monthly teacher trainings—intensive 300-hour programs held at venues like Omega Institute in upstate New York and various European locations.

Online platforms have expanded access to Jivamukti yoga classes and teachings, though the method emphasizes in-person transmission and the student-teacher relationship. Authorized Jivamukti studios exist in major cities worldwide, including Berlin, London, Sydney, and Munich.

Common Misconceptions

Jivamukti yoga is sometimes mistaken for a gentle or meditative practice due to its spiritual emphasis. In reality, the asana component is physically demanding—comparable in intensity to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga—and requires baseline strength and flexibility. Beginners seeking what is Jivamukti yoga for beginners should start with Basic or Fundamentals classes rather than Open classes.

The method is also not exclusively devotional in a theistic sense. Traditionally, central to this principle was the belief that Jivamukti followers should devote themselves fully to God; today, religion is seen as a personal choice, and bhakti relates to the premise that you should devote yourself to the greater good. The practice accommodates secular practitioners while maintaining reverence for yoga’s Indic roots.

Finally, Jivamukti yoga meaning extends beyond the physical practice. The five tenets are not optional add-ons but constitute the method’s core architecture. A class focused solely on asana without scriptural context, chanting, or ethical discussion would not meet the method’s definition of Jivamukti yoga.

How to Begin

Prospective students should locate a certified Jivamukti teacher or authorized school through the official jivamuktiyoga.com directory. Beginners are advised to start with a Basic class series or Fundamentals class to learn foundational postures, Sanskrit terminology, and the method’s philosophical framework before attending Open classes.

For self-study, Jivamukti Yoga: Practices for Liberating Body and Soul by Sharon Gannon and David Life provides comprehensive instruction in both asana sequences and the five tenets. The text includes translations of key Sanskrit chants and detailed explanations of the Yoga Sutras. Sharon Gannon’s Yoga and Veganism explores the intersection of ahimsa and dietary ethics—central to understanding Jivamukti’s activist dimension.

Those new to vigorous vinyasa should build strength and flexibility gradually. Jivamukti Open classes assume familiarity with Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations), standing poses, and inversions. Practitioners with injuries or limited mobility should communicate with teachers before class, as the method offers modifications but maintains a consistent pace. Approaching Jivamukti yoga with openness to both physical challenge and philosophical inquiry will yield the most authentic experience of the practice.
