What True Love IsBeyond Romantic Ideals

Sri Krishnaji challenges the conventional narrative of love—what media, culture, and conditioning have told us it should be—and points toward what true love actually is: a state of being rooted in consciousness and presence that transcends the fantasy of romantic union. Rather than a feeling dependent on another person's behavior or appearance, true love is an inner capacity that exists independent of circumstances, relationship status, or validation from others.

What Love Is Not: Deconstructing the Myth

Sri Krishnaji begins from a place of questioning what we have been told about love. Most cultural narratives—reinforced through films, songs, literature, and social conditioning—present love as a grand emotion that sweeps us away, a completion of the self through another person, or a reward we earn through being "good enough." This framework sets up a dependency structure: love becomes something external, something we must chase, win, or hold onto desperately.

The problem with this model is that it places the source of love outside ourselves. If love depends on another person's presence, attention, or reciprocation, then we are fundamentally fragile. We become reactive beings constantly monitoring how we are perceived, adjusting ourselves to maintain the other's affection, and spiraling into anxiety when we sense withdrawal. This is not freedom; it is a subtle form of bondage.

How Consciousness Relates to Love

Sri Krishnaji points toward an entirely different foundation: love as a function of consciousness itself. Rather than an emotion or feeling to be pursued, love emerges naturally when the mind is rooted in presence and awareness. This love is not contingent on the other person being perfect, meeting our expectations, or continuing to provide us with validation.

When consciousness is fragmented—scattered across desires, fears, narratives about who we should be—love cannot flow naturally. We are too busy defending a false self-image, too busy strategizing, too busy suffering. True love requires a mind that has stopped splitting its attention between who we are and who we think we should be. It requires presence.

The Difference Between Connection and Dependency

One of the critical distinctions Sri Krishnaji's teaching illuminates is the difference between genuine connection and dependency masquerading as love. In dependency-based relationships, both partners use each other to complete a sense of incompleteness. Each is trying to fill a void in the other, which creates a fragile bond: the moment the other person fails to provide that filling, resentment and abandonment anxiety arise.

True love, by contrast, is rooted in wholeness. When we are not fragmented internally—not at war with ourselves, not desperate for validation—we can meet another person without agenda. We can allow them to be as they are, rather than demand they be as we need them to be. This is the freedom that authentic love creates. It doesn't diminish presence; it deepens it.

Why We Have Been Conditioned Away From This Understanding

Sri Krishnaji's implicit critique addresses why this understanding of love has been obscured. Consumer culture, entertainment industries, and even institutional frameworks benefit from keeping us emotionally fragmented and seeking completion through external means—whether that is romantic partners, products, or experiences. A person rooted in their own wholeness is less controllable, less dependent on external validation, less likely to be driven by anxiety-based purchasing or relationship choices.

Additionally, the fragmented mind is easier to manipulate. When we are split between who we are and who we think we should be, we are constantly vulnerable to suggestions about how to be more attractive, more worthy, more lovable. Marketing thrives on this split. True love—as a state rooted in consciousness—would be economically inconvenient.

Love as a Present-Moment Reality

What Sri Krishnaji's teaching suggests is that true love is not something we achieve at some future point when we have met the right person or healed enough wounds. It is available now, as a function of present-moment awareness. When the mind settles into what is actually here—not what we fear will happen, not what we wish were different, but what is—love is the natural response.

This doesn't mean we don't feel sadness or grief or disappointment. Rather, it means these feelings move through consciousness without creating identity. We experience them fully but don't become them. And from that clarity, our responses to others—and to life itself—become far more intelligent, far less reactive.

The Invitation of True Love

Sri Krishnaji's message, particularly framed as a Valentine's Day reflection, is not to devalue romantic love or partnership. Rather, it is to point out that the foundation has been misunderstood. When two people come together not from fragmentation and need, but from wholeness and presence, the relationship itself becomes an expression of consciousness rather than a transaction of emotional needs.

This is a radical reframing. It suggests that the work is not in finding the "right person" or in fixing ourselves so we become lovable. The work is in waking up to what we already are: consciousness that is whole, complete, and naturally loving when not obscured by fear and false identity.

Where to Go From Here

If this teaching resonates, the next step is to examine your own relationship to love. Notice where you are seeking completion in another person or in romantic fantasy. Notice where you are performing a self rather than simply being present. Notice whether your love is rooted in presence or in need. These observations alone, without judgment, begin to shift the foundation. Begin to sit in stillness and notice the love that exists independent of circumstance—not as sentiment, but as the natural warmth of consciousness when the mind is not fragmenting itself. From there, your relationships will begin to reflect a different quality, not because you have done something to earn it, but because you have stopped blocking what is already true.

True love is a state rooted in consciousness and presence that exists independent of another person, while romantic love as typically portrayed is dependent on the other person meeting our expectations. True love emerges when the mind is whole and not fragmented by neediness or fear, whereas conventional romance often masks dependency and the attempt to complete oneself through another.
In dependent relationships, both partners use each other to fill internal voids, and resentment arises when the other person fails to provide validation or comfort. True love allows both people to meet each other from wholeness rather than need, and the bond is rooted in presence and acceptance rather than what the other person can provide.
Yes. True love is fundamentally a function of consciousness and presence available now, independent of whether you have a romantic partner. It is the natural response of a mind rooted in awareness rather than fragmentation, and this state does not require another person to be present or to behave in a certain way.
A person rooted in their own wholeness and inner love is less dependent on external validation, products, and romantic rescue narratives. Consumer culture benefits from keeping people emotionally fragmented and seeking completion through external means—partners, purchases, or experiences—rather than awakening them to the love already available in consciousness.
