Lion's Roar: Awakening Courageand Inner Royalty

Jack Kornfield draws on Rumi's metaphor of the camel, lion, and child of the spirit to articulate a path of spiritual awakening that moves through devotion and healing toward courage, wonder, and what Buddhists call the Lion's Roar—an inner dignity and power grounded in compassion rather than aggression. By touching our wounds, rage, and longings with kindness, and by reclaiming the capacity to love freely and see with wonder, we awaken to our inner royalty and live from a perspective that transcends small personal concerns.

What Does Rumi's Three-Stage Journey Teach Us?

Kornfield anchors this talk in Rumi's teaching on three stages of spiritual development: the camel, the lion, and the child of the spirit. The camel represents devotion—the humble, obedient servant carrying burdens across the desert, willing to bear weight and perform disciplines. This is the stage of discipleship, of showing up to practice, of saying yes to spiritual work even when difficult. Many people begin their spiritual path here, attracted to monks, teachers, and traditions that offer structure and guidance.

The lion is the stage of awakening courage and mastery. After years of devotion, something shifts. The lion does not serve; the lion roars. It claims its power, stands in its own authority, and faces what it fears. In Buddhist terms, this is the awakening of the Buddha's Lion's Roar—a fearlessness rooted not in domination but in clarity and compassion. The lion stage is about reclaiming the self from conditioned obedience and stepping into genuine power.

The child of the spirit represents the final stage: the return to wonder, curiosity, and play after mastery is achieved. This is not regression to ignorance but the recovery of beginner's mind—a fresh openness to existence, untainted by achievement or pride. As Kornfield suggests, this is the "amazement" and "mystery" that characterize a fully awakened consciousness.

How Do We Heal Wounds and Touch Grief with Compassion?

Kornfield teaches that awakening requires honest contact with our pain rather than transcendence of it. He emphasizes the importance of touching our grief, sorrow, rage, and fear with kindness and respect. This is not wallowing in emotion but conscious attention—allowing these forces to be felt without judgment or resistance. When we repress anger or grief, we remain bound to them unconsciously. When we turn toward them with compassion, we integrate them into a larger understanding.

This reflects a key principle in Buddhist practice: the path through suffering rather than around it. By acknowledging what has wounded us and what we long for, we wake ourselves from what Kornfield calls a "trance"—the habitual sleep of unconscious living. The Mary Oliver poem cited in the description—"You do not have to be good"—captures this permission to honor our deepest loves and desires rather than suppress them in the name of spiritual purity.

What Is the Buddha's Lion's Roar?

In Buddhist tradition, the Lion's Roar (simhanada) refers to fearless truth-telling and awakened presence. It is the roar of one who has woken from delusion and speaks or acts from that clarity. But Kornfield's interpretation emphasizes that this roar is not aggressive or dominating—it is the voice of someone who has touched their own vulnerability, grief, and rage, and transmuted it into courage grounded in compassion.

The Lion's Roar represents the claiming of inner royalty—a dignity that does not depend on external validation or conquest. It is the authority of a heart that has been broken open and healed, not closed down in cynicism. When we awaken the lion within, we no longer ask permission to exist or to love or to speak truth. We stand in our own being.

How Does Tenderness Lead to Awakening?

Rather than viewing awakening as a harsh or ascetic process, Kornfield emphasizes tenderness—seeing "with the eyes of the Divine Mother" and the "great heart of compassion." This frames spiritual practice not as conquest but as homecoming. The Divine Mother represents the unconditional love that holds all beings, including our own broken and struggling selves.

Tenderness here means meeting ourselves and others where we are, without demand for perfection or progress. It means allowing grief to have its own time, rage to teach us, and longing to guide us toward what matters most. As Kornfield states, "Poetry and the sense of beauty that art awakens is to move from a small sense of our problems and difficulties to some greater perspective of the heart." Tenderness expands our view beyond the tight circle of ego-anxiety to the larger context of meaning and beauty that art and contemplation reveal.

What Role Does Wonder and Beginner's Mind Play?

The child of the spirit—the final stage in Rumi's journey—is characterized by wonder, amazement, and mystery. This is not the wonder of ignorance but the wonder of one who has journeyed through discipline and courage and emerged with clear eyes and an open heart. Beginner's mind means approaching each moment as fresh, uncontaminated by past conclusions.

Kornfield warns against the subtle trap of pity—a diminished relationship to our own and others' experiences. Pity condescends; wonder honors. When we let go of the story that we (or others) are broken, and instead approach life with the openness of a child, we recover the capacity for play, curiosity, and genuine encounter. This is not frivolous; it is the deepest maturity.

How Do Prayer and Blessing Deepen Our Practice?

Prayer and blessing appear in Kornfield's teaching as active expressions of our awakened heart. Rather than petition—asking for things to change—prayer in this sense means a conscious turning toward what we care about, a sanctifying of our attention and intention. Blessing is similar: it is an extension of goodwill and recognition of the sacred in all beings.

Prayer and blessing are practices that train the heart to move beyond self-protection into generosity and recognition. They affirm that we live in relationship—with the earth, other beings, and the mystery itself. Through prayer and blessing, we move from trance to wakefulness.

What Does It Mean to Let Yourself Love What You Love?

Central to Kornfield's message is permission—permission to love what calls us, to honor our deepest longings, to stop living as if our desires are a mistake. The camel stage teaches us discipline and duty, but the lion stage teaches us to reclaim our own authority over what we choose to pursue and cherish.

This is not permission for recklessness or harm; rather, it is an invitation to stop fracturing ourselves in service to internalized voices of should. When we allow ourselves to love what we love, we access the fuel that sustains practice and awakens us. We stop living as dutiful servants and become conscious agents of our own becoming.

How Does Consciousness Evolve Through the Three Stages?

The journey from camel to lion to child of the spirit mirrors an evolution in consciousness itself. The camel-consciousness is collective, obedient, structured by external rules and hierarchies. The lion-consciousness awakens individual power, discernment, and the capacity to question authority and stand alone. The child-consciousness integrates both: the wisdom of structure and the freedom of self-direction, held together by wonder and openness.

This is not a linear progression that everyone experiences the same way. Rather, Kornfield offers it as a map for recognizing where we are and what the next awakening might ask of us. Some people are practicing the camel's devotion; some are beginning to feel the lion's stirring; some have already claimed their power and are learning again how to wonder.

What Is the Role of Consciousness in Sleep, Dreams, and Wakefulness?

Kornfield frames much of ordinary human life as a kind of sleep—a trance in which we operate from conditioned patterns without questioning or truly witnessing. The path of awakening is a gradual waking up, a return to consciousness. Dreams, in this context, can represent the half-conscious state in which we think we are awake but are still driven by unconscious forces.

True wakefulness, by contrast, is characterized by presence, choice, and compassion. It is the capacity to see clearly what is happening—inside ourselves, in our relationships, in the world—and to respond with wisdom rather than react from habit. This wakefulness is not a permanent achievement but a practice, a continuous return to presence.

Where to Go From Here

Kornfield's teaching invites several practices. First, notice where you are in the journey: Are you in the camel stage of learning discipline and showing up? Are you beginning to feel the lion stirring—the urge to claim your power and question what you've been told? Or are you recovering the capacity for wonder after years of effort?

Second, practice tenderness toward your own wounds and longings. Rather than trying to transcend them or judge them, meet them with the compassion you would offer a suffering friend. This is the path of integration, not denial.

Third, explore poetry and beauty as spiritual practice. Art and poetry bypass the rational mind and speak directly to the heart's larger perspective. They remind us that our small problems are held within a vast context of meaning and mystery.

Finally, awaken the lion within—not as domination but as the courage to live authentically, to speak truth, to love what you love, and to claim your inner royalty. This is the roar of a heart that has been broken and healed, frightened and brave, devoted and free.
