Five Elements Exercises: DailyPractice for Energy Flow

These five element exercises form a complete daily practice for accessing and balancing the body's energy meridians. Organized by the metal, water, wood, fire, and earth elements, each practice targets specific organs and emotional patterns while building vital energy. The work combines intentional movement, sound, breath, and visualization—treating the body as a living energy system rather than a machine. Practiced consistently on the earth, these exercises deepen their effects tenfold and shift the nervous system toward parasympathetic activation.

Why Ground Yourself on Earth First?

The foundation of this practice begins not with complex movement, but with the simplest act: standing barefoot on the earth. When your feet contact the ground, an immediate neurological shift occurs. The rational, analytical left brain—the masculine pole of consciousness—quiets down, while the right brain awakens: intuition, openness, vulnerability, and sensitivity activate instantly. This is not merely poetic; it is measurable physiology. Juan Pablo Barahona notes that practicing the five element exercises directly on the earth intensifies their effects tenfold, because you are working within an energetic field rather than an isolated body.

The earth itself is a living being with its own frequency. When you exhale consciously, you are returning energy to the planet; when you inhale, you are drawing its nourishing frequency upward. This reciprocal relationship is the beginning of true somatic awareness—not self-improvement, but self-attunement.

What Does the Metal Element Exercise Do?

The metal element governs the lungs and large intestine meridians, the organs responsible for taking in and releasing. In traditional Chinese medicine, metal relates to the capacity to let go of old patterns and receive what is new. The exercise works like this: inhale deeply toward the lungs (imagining the energy gathering at points near the shoulders), then exhale while making the metal mudra—a specific hand shape—and bending your knees. One elbow remains bent while the other arm extends, centering the mudra at the heart. Barahona describes this as "the warrior who sends the arrow of intention to the universe."

The practice includes a metal breath for cleansing: deep exhalations that release stagnation from the lungs and old emotional patterns held in the chest. This breath "is used a lot to reorder the energy in the chakras" when you have been doing deep release work. Another variation involves inhaling deeply to the sky, lengthening the spine, and bathing the entire being in that upward energy. The key is remembering that this is not physical exercise—it is the movement of energy through the body. The internal gesture matters more than the external form. You inhale to the heart, feel what arises without trying to change it, release what no longer serves you, and smile naturally as a result of that release.

How Does the Water Element Build Strength and Release Fear?

Water is the element of the kidneys and bladder—the organs that store our vital life force and process fear. Standing with feet parallel, hands rest on the kidneys while you inhale toward the sky and exhale with a soft sound ("Uh, very soft, like blowing out a candle"). This quiets the nervous system and honors the delicate nature of kidney energy.

A more active variation uses fists pressed directly into the kidneys. As you exhale, you push the fists inward as if cleansing the organs; as you inhale, you bring them back out, repeating this cycle to intensify the cleansing. Barahona emphasizes that the kidneys are the seat of fear in the body. By engaging this practice, you are literally releasing frozen fear that has been stored in this organ system.

Another water exercise focuses on the fluidity of joints: knees, hips, neck. You move in slow, undulating patterns—down toward the earth, up toward the sky—exaggerating the joints' natural curves. This is "feeling the water as it flows in our being," a practice of surrender and smooth, natural motion. After six or nine repetitions, the legs grow stronger, confidence rises, and vital energy awakens. You then inhale the entire water channel upward and bring that energy to the heart to relax.

What Is the Wood Element About, and How Does It Release Anger?

Wood is the element of the liver and gallbladder, representing the germination of the seed and the opening to the new. It is also the element in which stagnant anger becomes trapped when not released.

One exercise stretches the right side of the body deeply. A more advanced variation bends the knees, rests the left elbow on the left leg, and inhales deeply while expanding the upper body—a movement that "calms and expands the energy." The most direct anger-release practice involves inhaling deeply into the heart, then opening both arms like two walls expanding outward. You then inhale again and exhale with a strong sound, as if "cutting wood"—the decisive action of completing a cycle. At the end, you receive the released energy, let it go, relax, smile, and thank the now-flowing vital force. This practice "releases old anger stagnant in my body," allowing the wood element to transition into fire.

How Do You Activate the Fire Element?

Fire is vital energy, joy, and creativity. It lives in the heart and flows through the body's four fire meridians. The practice begins with feet parallel. You inhale deeply while imagining fire bursting upward from within—"at first we force it but then we really feel that internal explosion that awakens the element of fire, of joy, of creativity in our being." Unlike the calm of metal or the fluidity of water, fire is about aliveness and expansion.

To deepen this, turn your palms to one side, then the other, facing upward. This activates the fire meridians that travel through the arms. Feel the energy awaken along these channels. Return to center at the heart, allowing that fire to settle and flow through the whole being.

Why Does Earth Element Work Come Last?

The earth element represents nourishment, stability, and the body's digestive and metabolic center. It governs the stomach, spleen, and pancreas. Following the other four elements, you inhale strongly into the earth element's organs, energetically cleansing them, then open the left side of the body with a releasing sound ("oh oh oh oh").

You can also step one leg back with a bent knee and step the other forward, opening the stomach meridian. As you exhale, you stretch backward; as you inhale, you return to the front. This opens the channel fully. From the belly, you then awaken energy downward to the legs and feet—the literal "earth" of the body. Light bouncing or gentle kicking (even downward, not just forward) activates this earthing. This is not about flexibility; it is about awakening energy. When you finish, return to center.

What Comes After the Five Elements Sequence?

If you are practicing the full five-element sequence and want to awaken your energy for the day ahead, close with a "jump of joy"—a literal jump coupled with pure enthusiasm. This sends vital energy, good vibes, abundance, and light into your day. If the session is longer or you are working more deeply, lower yourself gently and either sit in meditation or lie down and relax to allow the awakened energy to integrate into your tissues and cells.

Barahona stresses that consistency and perseverance are the teachers. These exercises are already changing your life simply by practicing them, but only through regular engagement will you feel the true shifts in your body, nervous system, and life circumstances. The practice is not a one-time event; it is a daily conversation with your own energy and the earth's energy.

How Do Intention and Sound Amplify Energy Work?

Throughout the practice, specific sounds accompany the breath and movement. The metal sound, the water sound ("Uh"), the wood sound—each one is not arbitrary but attuned to a particular organ system and emotional frequency. Sound is a direct carrier of intention and energy. When you exhale with the metal sound, you are not just moving air; you are releasing a specific vibrational frequency that the lungs and large intestine recognize. Similarly, the soft "Uh" of the kidneys is "like blowing out a candle, very soft, very subtle"—a sound that honors the delicate, deep nature of water element work.

Intention itself is the arrow you send with each practice. At the beginning and end of your session, you focus your mind on why you are here, what you are releasing, what you are opening toward. This focus transforms mere physical movement into ceremony.

Where to go from here

Begin by practicing each element individually for five to ten breaths, several times a week. Notice which elements feel easy and which feel stuck or resistant—that resistance is information. Over time, string them together into a full sequence, working your way through metal, water, wood, fire, and earth in a single session. Practice barefoot on the earth whenever possible. Keep a simple journal of how you feel before and after—your energy levels, emotional clarity, any emotional releases. Share the practices with friends and family; the practice is amplified when witnessed and held collectively. Most importantly, approach this not as a fitness regimen but as a daily conversation with the living energy within and around you.

[0:04] Good morning, beautiful people,

[0:06] Namaste! Here we are, happy to be doing the first

[0:09] therapy session we've talked about with you:

[0:12] connecting with the earth,

[0:14] truly feeling the earth's energy,

[0:20] visualizing our being, and with each

[0:22] exhalation, returning to the earth. It's

[0:25] a very beautiful relationship we have with

[0:28] planet Earth, which is a living being. I

[0:30] posted several articles on Facebook

[0:33] that scientifically explain what

[0:35] happens when you simply connect your feet to the

[0:37] ground.

[0:39] Instantly, the left side of the

[0:41] brain, the

[0:44] rational, masculine side, shuts down a little, and the

[0:46] right side of the brain, the

[0:49] feminine side, our openness, our

[0:51] intuition, our vulnerability,

[0:54] connects instantly the moment

[0:56] we touch the earth with our feet.

[0:59] So, it's something very beautiful to start

[1:01] applying. You can also sit and

[1:03] read a book, lie down, take a

[1:05] nap, whatever you like. But this connection

[1:08] is very important. If you do your

[1:10] Five Elements exercises directly on

[1:13] the earth, they intensify tenfold; it's

[1:16] much deeper. So, let's

[1:19] start with the metal element again,

[1:23] reviewing the exercise we saw before.

[1:26] Take a deep breath,

[1:33] remember to bend your elbows here. In

[1:36] class, I saw that many extended their arms;

[1:38] here they are. Bent elbows for the

[1:40] lung and large intestine meridians,

[1:57] the new one we saw in class,

[2:01] inhaling towards the lung, one of the

[2:04] points right next to the shoulders, and

[2:07] exhaling, making the metal mudra

[2:10] with the sound, bending the knees,

[2:13] inhaling to the

[2:18] center. Notice that one elbow is bent and

[2:21] the other arm extended. The mudra

[2:24] remains centered.

[2:31] This is like the warrior who sends the

[2:33] arrow of intention to the

[2:40] universe. And I always return to the

[2:44] heart, a smile to the

[2:50] heart, from there I

[2:55] relax. I also remind you of a

[2:57] metal breath we saw to

[2:59] cleanse the lungs

[3:00] and let go of old patterns, which was

[3:15] exhaling. This last one is to calm the

[3:18] nervous system, and when we do

[3:20] very strong work of openings,

[3:23] releases, celebrations of whatever, it is

[3:25] used a lot to reorder the

[3:28] energy in the chakras. It is simple

[3:31] but very profound. I inhale deeply to the

[3:45] sky, the Star Bath, inhaling

[3:49] deeply, I lengthen, I stretch

[3:51] and I bathe. More

[4:02] than physical exercise, it is the

[4:04] movement of energy that I am

[4:08] doing in my

[4:17] body, inhaling

[4:20] deeply,

[4:24] heart, feel, release and smile,

[4:30] feel what is without wanting to change anything,

[4:34] release what does not allow me to vibrate richly

[4:37] in my life. Smiling happens naturally because of

[4:40] how good I'm feeling from the

[4:44] release. Let's move on to the water element,

[4:48] which is the kidneys and bladder. For this, we put our

[4:52] feet parallel as we saw in

[4:56] class. Hands to the kidneys, inhale to the

[5:00] sky, hold for one or two

[5:04] counts, exhale.

[5:12] Uh, inhale vertebra by vertebra without

[5:17] forcing, hands to kidneys, hold without

[5:21] forcing, back the neck, it's a

[5:24] soft sound

[5:42] [Laughter].

[5:51] When I finish, I leave my hands on the

[5:53] kidneys, remembering that the sound of the

[5:56] kidneys is Uh, very soft, like

[6:00] blowing out a candle, very soft, very

[6:03] subtle. Here we are going to take the fists

[6:06] directly to the kidneys as we did

[6:08] sitting, but standing it's a little more

[6:12] intense. Fists on

[6:15] kidneys, inhale

[6:17] deeply and exhaling, I push the fists

[6:20] inwards and release, I cleanse my

[6:27] kidneys, inhaling, I bring

[6:37] the fists back, remember they are penetrating

[6:39] towards the kidneys,

[6:55] cleansing them. Another important thing for the

[6:58] water element is releasing

[7:02] fears. Here

[7:05] we are, I exhale, I go down softly, inhaling, I go up

[7:09] the kidney channel, cleansing it,

[7:12] back and

[7:16] release, releasing my fears, I inhale the whole

[7:19] channel The kidney meridians...

[7:34] After three, six, or nine repetitions, my

[7:37] legs feel strong, working on my

[7:39] strength, my confidence, my vital energy. And

[7:43] whenever I want, I inhale deeply

[7:45] upwards and bring it to my

[7:53] heart, I

[7:54] relax. And to close, I remind you of the

[7:58] water exercise we already saw, which is very rich, which is

[8:02] simply letting go. But here we're going

[8:05] to focus, as we did in class, on

[8:08] engaging the joints more,

[8:11] exaggerating a little. Yes, see how

[8:14] the knee, the

[8:17] hip, the neck are moving. Explore that

[8:21] subtle, free movement, however you want, towards

[8:24] the

[8:26] earth, towards the sky.

[8:30] Yes, it's feeling the water as it flows in

[8:33] our being. We go down gently,

[8:37] feeling the

[8:39] energy, smiling at the

[8:44] energy,

[8:50] relaxing. Then we move on to the

[8:53] wood element, which is the germination of the

[8:56] seed, the opening to the new. Wood

[8:59] is the liver and the gallbladder.

[9:02] So, to review a

[9:04] little, stretching my right side...

[9:20] [Music]

[9:27] Another way to do it that goes

[9:31] deeper is to bend the

[9:34] knees, rest the left elbow on

[9:37] the left leg, inhale

[9:43] deeply, inhale deeply...

[9:51] [Music]

[10:04] sound. That calms, expands the

[10:07] energy. Another one that helps a lot to work on

[10:11] releasing stagnant anger in the

[10:13] body is... Inhale deeply into the

[10:15] heart and open like two walls,

[10:21] expand, inhale deeply into the heart

[10:31] [Music]

[10:40] and the

[10:43] last inhale deeply and exhale strongly,

[10:47] cut wood,

[11:00] remember that in the end I receive, I let go, I

[11:03] relax, I smile at the energy that

[11:06] flows throughout my being, I thank it,

[11:09] releasing old anger stagnant in my

[11:21] body, the wood leads to the fire, the fire

[11:25] is the

[11:27] vital energy, open the channel of

[11:31] fire, feet

[11:33] parallel, inhale deeply

[11:38] [Music]

[11:40] up, inhale to the

[11:43] heart,

[11:49] relax, ah,

[12:00] reviewing what we saw, inhale deeply, I

[12:30] allow the fire to burst from

[12:53] within, at first we force it but

[12:56] then we really feel that

[12:58] internal explosion that awakens the element of

[13:01] fire, of joy, of creativity in

[13:03] our

[13:05] being, to work on the

[13:09] meridians we can

[13:11] turn the palms to one side and to

[13:15] the other, looking at the palm that faces the

[13:19] sky, this works, awakens the energy

[13:22] in the

[13:24] meridians of the arms, the four

[13:27] fire meridians pass through the

[13:33] arms, I return to the

[13:37] center,

[13:50] heart, the last element of

[13:55] earth,

[13:57] remembering last class,

[14:00] inhaling the energy of the

[14:14] earth

[14:20] strongly, cleansing stomach, spleen and

[14:23] pancreas

[14:25] energetically and from there opening the

[14:28] left side of the

[14:30] body

[14:36] oh oh oh

[14:52] oh I

[14:55] return ah

[15:03] from here we can take one leg

[15:06] back bending the

[15:09] knee another leg forward with the knee

[15:13] bent and we open the

[15:16] stomach meridian inhaling deeply

[15:19] upwards and exhaling stretching

[15:23] backwards inhaling I return to the

[15:28] front exhaling

[15:40] backwards I return to the

[15:42] center and from here we awaken the energy

[15:46] from the belly to the legs which

[15:49] are the

[15:52] earth I bounce a little and kick it can

[15:55] be gentle it doesn't matter but yes like

[15:58] kicking a door it

[16:00] can be downwards too it doesn't have to do with

[16:02] flexibility it's more about

[16:05] the energy I pull I awaken

[16:13] when I finish I return to the

[16:22] center if I am doing the sequence of

[16:25] the five elements it is good to finish by

[16:28] letting go with the jump of

[16:36] joy if I want to awaken

[16:39] the energy a little if I am going to work or

[16:42] I am doing it in the morning this

[16:43] awakens a lot of pure energy good

[16:46] vibes for the day abundance light

[16:49] vital energy yes I go down

[16:56] gently and we always finish to the heart giving thanks

[16:59] remembering our

[17:02] intention focusing our

[17:05] energy if it is a long session I

[17:08] recommend sitting for a while in

[17:09] meditation or lying down and relaxing to

[17:13] Assimilate the energy into your

[17:15] body. These exercises will change your

[17:19] life; they already are. But if you are

[17:22] consistent and persevering, you will

[17:24] truly feel the change. I hope you can

[17:26] practice them and share them with many dear people. Namaste.

[17:31] Thank you very much.

When your feet contact the ground, the rational, analytical left brain quiets down and the right brain activates—increasing intuition, openness, and sensitivity. This shift is immediate and measurable at the neurological level, making grounded practice more effective.

The water element governs the kidneys and bladder and is the seat of fear in the body. Practicing water element exercises—especially using fists pressed into the kidneys—helps release frozen fear stored in this organ system.
Inhale deeply into the heart, then open both arms like two walls expanding outward. Exhale with a strong sound as if 'cutting wood,' completing the release. This practice allows old anger trapped in the body to flow and transform into the fire element.
Practicing directly on the earth—barefoot and outdoors—intensifies the effects tenfold because you are working within the earth's energetic field. If indoors practice is necessary, ground yourself as much as possible, but outdoor earth contact is ideal.
The exercises begin changing your life immediately, but consistency and perseverance are key. With regular practice over weeks and months, you will feel measurable shifts in energy, nervous system regulation, and life circumstances.
The jump of joy is a closing practice if you want to awaken your energy for the day ahead. It sends vital energy, good vibes, abundance, and light into your daily life, following the complete five-element sequence.
