Dark Night of the Soul: TheAwareness Practice That Begins in Despair

Ron from Halifax calls in with a question most people sitting in the dark night of the soul are quietly asking but afraid to voice: When you're caught in it—where things have no meaning or purpose, where your own mind has become a prison of repetitive dark thoughts—what can actually help? Not the wisdom that comes after you've made it through, not the encouragement spoken from the other side of the chasm, but right now, in the midnight of it, what? How do you find ground when even the ground itself has become impossible?

What helps when the dark night has trapped you?

Most teaching about the dark night of the soul comes from those who've already emerged. Retrospective accounts are valuable. They map the terrain, they promise that traversal is possible, they speak with the authority of having survived. But they're spoken from a place of light. Someone still in darkness doesn't need a map back from the destination—they need something to do with their hands, something to see, right here where hope has fled and the world has become a flat gray thing without texture or reason. They need a practice that works in the depths, not a description of the climb out.

Where do you start when everything feels meaningless?

Eckhart Tolle's answer is deceptively simple. Start where you are. "Become aware of the thoughts that go through your mind continuously. What kind of thoughts are going through my mind? Just have a look at the thoughts."

This isn't a command to fix them or replace them with better ones. It's an invitation to observation. There's a profound difference. Most people in darkness are already trying desperately to think their way out, to find the right thought that will cancel out the wrong one. They're at war with their own minds. Tolle's suggestion is almost the opposite: stop fighting. Just look.

What exactly are these repetitive thoughts you're trapped in?

Because when you actually look at those thoughts—the ones that cycle through your mind on a daily basis—you'll find something worth noticing: they are extremely painful. More than that, they are completely believed. You are in the grip of a narrative about how awful everything is, how pointless it all is, how you'd rather not be here at all. And most critically, you have no distance from it. The narrative is your experience. There's no separation between the one who thinks and the one who observes the thinking.

If a dark night was triggered by an actual loss—a death, a devastation, a genuine failure, something objectively terrible—that event itself isn't what's keeping you in darkness. The event happened. It ended. What's being kept alive is a particular interpretation of that event, repeated daily, defended ruthlessly by your mind, and completely accepted as true. Your mind has built a story about what it means, about who you are as a result, about the nature of existence itself. And you're living inside that story as though it were the walls of your room, the only possible reality.

Can your body tell the difference between real and imagined threats?

No. This is not metaphor; this is neurology. When you're in a genuinely dangerous situation—a predator, a collision, real physical threat—your nervous system produces the cascade we call fear: elevated heart rate, narrowed focus, the chemical cocktail of survival. But when your mind creates a fearful thought—or in this case, a despair-saturated narrative repeated a thousand times—your body responds identically. It cannot tell the difference between the imagined and the immediate.

So the heaviness you feel in your chest, the flatness in your affect, the sense that everything is pointless and will always be pointless, is not separate from those thoughts. Your body has absorbed them as literal truth and organized itself around them. The dark night is not just a mental event; it's a total-body event.

What happens when you start watching your thoughts instead of fighting them?

This is where the first shift becomes possible. Not because you fight the thoughts or try to think your way out—that only deepens the war—but because you start to watch them. You notice: I am telling myself a story. I've been telling myself this story for months. Every morning I wake up and that story is the first thing I access. I completely believe in what I'm saying. My body has organized around this belief. And in that moment of noticing—in that tiny step back from the machinery of thought—something remarkable happens. Awareness appears. That awareness is the beginning. It's small, but it's there.

How do defensive thoughts protect the dark narrative?

Then another thought arrives immediately. It says: "But it's true." That's expected. This is how the mind defends itself. Another thought will come to protect the structure of your interpretation, to maintain the story's validity. The mind is excellent at self-preservation. This is normal. The crucial point is that you're now watching them arrive. The watching is awareness, and awareness is the thing that was missing while you were completely inside the grip of those thoughts. You were the thoughts. Now you're the one observing them. That distinction is everything.

Is it really true that you're trapped by those thoughts?

From that place of observation, Tolle offers a question. Ask yourself: Are they all completely true? The moment you ask this, another thought will arrive to defend the answer, to say yes, of course they are true, you know they're true. Keep watching anyway. Some slight awareness has entered. Some tiny space has opened between you and the machinery of your mind. That's enough. That's the beginning.

What about the heaviness in your body?

Then move to the body. The heaviness you feel—in your chest, your stomach, your limbs, the weight that makes even standing feel like moving through mud—it's real and it should not be argued with. Don't try to think it away or spiritually transcend it. Accept that this is what is here right now, without demanding that it should be different. This isn't resignation or defeat. It's radical honesty. The emotional body is holding something real, and the first step toward any transformation is to stop the internal war with what's actually present. To let it be.

Where does unhappiness actually live?

And then, at some point—there's no timeline for this, no guarantee, no formula—you may be able to look at a tree without thought getting in the way. Just see the tree. Notice how it's simply there, growing, existing, fine. Notice the sky. Notice that these things have no despair in them. Notice the water you drink. There is no unhappiness in that water. The unhappiness is not distributed throughout existence like a property of reality itself. It's an energy field that lives in you. It's all in here.

This realization doesn't erase the pain or make everything suddenly meaningful again. But it relocates the weight. Suddenly the heaviness has a location instead of being the fundamental texture of existence. The world isn't actually flat and meaningless. Your interior state is temporarily covering the world with a particular filter, a particular frequency. Seeing that filter—recognizing it as something within you rather than the truth about reality—is the key.

Can this awareness shift the darkness?

That awareness itself is the beginning of awakening out of the darkness, whether that awakening comes gradually over weeks or suddenly in a single moment. Nobody can say which it will be. But the possibility is there once you've separated yourself from the thought stream, once you've seen that unhappiness is not the world but something within you.

Is awareness practice a substitute for professional help?

Tolle is careful to note what his teaching is not. A talk about awareness is not a substitute for professional support. If you're in the dark night of the soul right now, speak to someone you trust or a professional. Seek the help you need. Both can be true at once—the practical inner work of observing thoughts and the real support from the outside world are not in competition. Sometimes the darkness requires multiple forms of help: awareness work, therapy, community, time, sometimes medication. Recognizing that is itself a form of wisdom.

Where to go from here

If you're beginning to practice this observation of thoughts and body—this simple but profound witnessing—the deepest instruction comes not from intellectual understanding but from direct experience. Sit with your thoughts without judgment. Notice the stories your mind tells and how completely you believe them. Feel the body's response without demanding it change or go away. Look at the world without the filter of your interpretation for a moment if you can. Notice what's actually fine, what's actually present that isn't unhappiness.

The darkness doesn't disappear instantly, and this practice isn't about toxic positivity or spiritual bypassing. But the awareness that you are not identical with the darkness becomes clearer. That distinction, that separation, is everything. It's the first foothold on a climb that may be gradual or may surprise you with sudden shifts. Both are possible. Both are valid.

[0:00] And really actually unhappiness

[0:02] is just in in in in the is an energy

[0:06] field that lives in you. It's not in the

[0:08] tree. The tree is fine. The sky is fine,

[0:11] too.

[0:13] And the water is fine. There's no

[0:15] unhappiness in the water I'm drinking.

[0:22] >> We have Ron with us here live from

[0:26] Halifax, Nova Scotia. And Ron will go

[0:29] ahead and bring you on, and you can ask

[0:31] Eckhart your question.

[0:33] >> Hi, Ron.

[0:35] >> Hi, Eckhart. Thank you.

[0:37] Um

[0:39] Yeah, I'm wondering when you're in this

[0:42] uh right in the middle of the dark

[0:45] night,

[0:47] what would be the most important message

[0:49] you could hear? It just seems like the

[0:52] wisdom that comes with through this

[0:54] journey

[0:56] is described by people who have been

[0:59] through it, and they're already on the

[1:00] other side. And you know, they benefited

[1:03] But when you're caught in it, where

[1:04] things have no meaning or purpose,

[1:08] at that moment, what can what can uh

[1:11] help when you're at, say, the midnight

[1:14] of the dark night?

[1:17] >> Right. Thank you. Thank you.

[1:25] Well,

[1:27] um

[1:36] it would probably help to

[1:39] uh become aware of

[1:43] the thoughts in your that go through

[1:46] your mind

[1:47] continuously.

[1:49] What kind of thoughts

[1:51] are going through my mind?

[1:54] Just have a look at the thoughts.

[1:57] And you will find

[1:59] that

[2:00] the thoughts are go extremely

[2:03] painful.

[2:07] If the

[2:10] dark night of the soul was triggered

[2:13] by

[2:16] an event

[2:17] maybe going back

[2:20] several weeks, months, or

[2:22] even years.

[2:24] It was if it was triggered by an event

[2:29] a

[2:30] something bad, very bad happening, some

[2:33] kind of

[2:34] great loss.

[2:36] Uh

[2:41] an event that

[2:45] would normally

[2:46] be considered

[2:49] very unpleasant, bad, and perhaps will

[2:53] create

[2:54] emotions of sadness that would be quite

[2:57] normal, but this event

[2:59] is being

[3:01] kept alive

[3:02] and interpreted in particular way

[3:06] that creates

[3:08] the dark emotions that you feel.

[3:11] So, what are what are the thoughts that

[3:14] go through my mind?

[3:18] And you may discover that

[3:21] you were in the grip

[3:23] that you are in the grip of these

[3:26] thoughts.

[3:27] And

[3:29] most importantly

[3:31] you completely believe

[3:35] in the narrative that goes through your

[3:37] mind. You comp

[3:39] Do you What are the thoughts?

[3:42] What What are you thinking on a daily

[3:44] basis? What are the main rep repetitive

[3:46] thoughts in your mind? And you

[3:49] most likely will find they are very

[3:52] very negative about the world and the

[3:55] how awful how mean this it all is.

[3:58] And you would rather die.

[4:02] The uh

[4:05] The what

[4:06] these thoughts you were in the grip of

[4:08] these thoughts coming you believed

[4:11] completely in the narrative in your

[4:14] mind.

[4:16] And your body interpreted this which the

[4:19] body does.

[4:21] The body can as we you probably know the

[4:24] body cannot tell the difference between

[4:26] an actual event

[4:29] or a thought that you have.

[4:32] That's for example when you

[4:34] are in a fearful situation and dangerous

[4:37] situation you experience fear.

[4:41] But

[4:42] often your mind creates a fearful

[4:45] thought

[4:47] and you experience the same kind of

[4:49] fear. Because the body cannot tell the

[4:51] difference between an actual event or

[4:53] something that's just happening as a

[4:54] thought.

[4:56] So when these thoughts go through your

[4:58] mind they are not being

[5:01] There's a complete lack of awareness.

[5:03] You completely you're completely in the

[5:06] grip of that particular narrative.

[5:09] And it's very dark.

[5:13] And awful.

[5:15] And you completely

[5:17] believe in every thought

[5:19] that comes into your mind and they are

[5:21] repetitive.

[5:24] And that would you if this is the body's

[5:26] reaction which it's

[5:30] the emotional reaction to those thoughts

[5:33] is

[5:34] the same frequency by so to speak

[5:36] vibrational frequency as those thoughts

[5:39] very dark and heavy.

[5:43] So

[5:45] there's the

[5:48] the darkness of the this

[5:51] the energy field of dark night of the

[5:53] soul has a mental aspect

[5:56] and the emotional aspect.

[6:00] You look at the mental aspect

[6:03] then awareness can come but by looking

[6:06] at it

[6:07] and asking yourself

[6:09] realizing that you completely believe in

[6:12] that particular narrative.

[6:17] Isn't it interesting? I completely

[6:19] believe in what I'm telling myself. I've

[6:22] been telling myself for months.

[6:25] How awful my life is, how pointless it

[6:27] is, how

[6:29] whatever it is the narrative is.

[6:33] You're in the grip of that

[6:35] interpretation.

[6:37] And then you suddenly become aware of

[6:39] it.

[6:42] And then the next thought that arises

[6:43] will say, "But it's true."

[6:49] That's another thought that comes in.

[6:51] And then awareness comes in and then

[6:53] some other thought will come in, "But

[6:55] you know very well that this is exactly

[6:57] what I'm talking about." Okay, another

[6:59] thought.

[7:00] Thought will come in to defend the

[7:02] structure the existing structure of

[7:05] thought.

[7:06] But you continue to continue continue to

[7:09] be there as a witnessing presence.

[7:14] That means

[7:15] the possibility of awakening out of that

[7:18] darkness is suddenly there. What is

[7:21] that?

[7:22] The awareness is there.

[7:25] The ability

[7:27] to observe your inner state.

[7:30] Wow.

[7:32] And then

[7:36] you

[7:37] At that moment all you need is

[7:40] to realize that there's certain thoughts

[7:44] in your mind.

[7:47] Are they all totally true?

[7:52] If you ask yourself the question and

[7:54] another thought will come in, yes, of

[7:55] course they are true, but you continue

[7:57] to observe.

[8:00] So, some awareness comes in.

[8:02] And then you observe the heaviness in

[8:04] your body,

[8:05] the emotion.

[8:09] And

[8:11] you accept that this is what you feel in

[8:14] your body right now.

[8:17] Without demanding that it should be

[8:19] different, that's just this is what it

[8:22] is.

[8:25] That could be the beginning of

[8:30] coming out of it if you're ready.

[8:39] You may be able to at some point

[8:44] look at a tree

[8:47] without the interference of

[8:50] thought or the sky.

[8:56] And realize the unhappiness

[8:58] is just in in in in the is an energy

[9:02] field that lives in you. It's not in the

[9:04] tree, the tree is fine.

[9:07] The sky is fine, too.

[9:13] And the water is fine, there's no

[9:15] unhappiness in the water I'm drinking.

[9:20] It's all in here.

[9:23] You become aware of the unhappiness.

[9:28] That awareness is the key.

[9:33] Whether then from there on, it may you

[9:36] may awaken gradually or suddenly, we

[9:39] don't know.

Start by observing your thoughts without trying to fix them. Notice the painful story you're believing and how completely you accept it as true. This observation itself is the beginning of awareness, which is the key to awakening. Then observe the heaviness in your body without demanding it change.
No—the problem isn't a thought that needs replacing with a better thought. The problem is that you're completely identified with all your thoughts. The solution is awareness: the ability to observe your thoughts rather than be absorbed by them. That distance is what creates the possibility of shift.
Your body cannot distinguish between an actual event and a thought about an event. When your mind repeatedly tells a story of despair, your nervous system responds as if that story were an immediate threat, creating heaviness, emotional pain, and a sense of shutdown.
Ask yourself: Are they all completely true? Then watch what happens. Another thought will likely try to defend the story. Keep observing. The thoughts defending themselves are also just thoughts. This watching is awareness itself.
The unhappiness is an energy field that lives within you. The tree is fine. The sky is fine. The world is fine. What's happening is that your internal state is filtering your perception of reality, not that reality itself is actually dark and meaningless.
No. A talk about awareness is not a substitute for support. Speak to someone you trust or a professional therapist. Both the inner witnessing work and outside support can be—and should be—true at once.
Nobody can say. Whether the shift comes gradually over time or suddenly in a moment, there's no formula. The point is that awareness creates the possibility of awakening, but the timeline is different for each person.
