Guided Meditation to Cleanse Overwhelm and Stress

Picture a room with a single chair and a person sitting in it, feet flat on the floor, palms turned up on the lap, eyes closed. A calm voice asks the listener to let go of the to-do list for just a little while. That is the scene that opens "Cleanse the Overwhelm," a roughly fourteen-minute guided meditation posted to YouTube by Michelle Chalfant in October 2017, which has since drawn more than 141,000 views. Its premise, stated in the video's description, is that prolonged stress and a sense of being overwhelmed can feed anxiety and depression, and that the practice is meant to clear that load so a person can find balance again. Rather than arguing for that point, the recording simply walks the listener through a sequence of images: a box placed outside the door for every nagging thought, a grounding exercise that asks the body to sink into the earth, a ball of light above the head, and a waterfall that washes the day away. What follows explains how those pieces fit together and why the order matters.

Lecture · 7 sections

What does the opening ask you to do with your to-do list?

The meditation starts with an act of deferral, not of effort. The narrator invites the listener to notice the thoughts that arrive insisting there is no time, that there is too much to do, that everything is pressing. Rather than arguing with them, the instruction is to imagine each one placed in a box outside the room, tied with a bow, to be opened later. "Let's take all of those thoughts that are coming from the Mind," the narrator says near the start, "and put them in a box outside the room where you're sitting with a beautiful bow on them, knowing that at some point you will get to them later."

The reasoning given is simple and worth taking seriously as a technique. The narrator says that what the mind forgets is that getting more done depends on slowing down and reconnecting with yourself. The box is not a way of ignoring responsibilities. It is a boundary: the tasks still exist, but for the length of the session they are no longer allowed to run the room. When the mind keeps returning with its lists, the instruction repeats. Let the thoughts drift by and land in the box. The practice is less about silencing thought than about declining to follow it.

Why does the meditation begin with breath and the feet?

Before any imagery appears, the recording anchors attention in breathing. Long, deep inhales and exhales are followed by a simple instruction to bring attention to the breath itself. Only after that does the narrator move attention down to the soles of the feet, noticing what is happening where they meet the floor.

This is where the meditation's central metaphor, grounding, takes shape. The narrator asks the listener to "invite our feet to open on the bottom," so that the grounding process can begin and the energy of Mother Earth can rise up through the feet. The description of what may be felt is deliberately loose. At around 4:01 the narrator says you "may feel a slight tingle, warmth, cool, maybe a pulling sensation, maybe nothing, and that's okay too." That open-endedness is one of the more useful features of the piece. It asks for observation rather than performance. Nothing is being forced, and the narrator makes that explicit: "we are directing nothing, we're just observing the whole thing."

The stated purpose of this step is practical. The narrator says that grounding gives the body and the energy field "a dumping ground for all of the thoughts and stresses and overwhelms that we have collected throughout the day." The image the video builds on is a tree with deep roots that stays tall in a windstorm. Around 7:03 the narrator draws the comparison directly: "we are no different than a tree." When grounded, the speaker says, a person can remain present and connected to themselves even under stress, confusion, or the rapid-fire thoughts of a busy mind.

"When we ground like this it gives our body, our energy field, a dumping ground for all of the thoughts and stresses and overwhelms that we have collected throughout the day." (Michelle Chalfant, "Cleanse the Overwhelm," guided meditation, around 3:55)

What is the waterfall of light supposed to wash away?

Once the listener feels settled in the body, the visualization shifts upward. The narrator asks the listener to imagine a beautiful ball of light above the head, cascading down over the body, through it, and into the earth. Warmth from this light is described as the perfect temperature. Then droplets of water begin to appear within the light. They gather into streams, and eventually into a waterfall pouring down over and through the body.

The video is explicit about what this waterfall is doing. It is "cleansing us of all negative energy, distorted thoughts and patterns, fear, overwhelm, stresses and concerns." The water is carried down into the earth or absorbed fully. The listener is asked to notice afterward whether anything feels different, and the narrator offers likely answers without insisting on them: you may feel lighter, brighter, clearer. The mechanics are symbolic, but the sequence is intentional. Grounding comes first to create a place for things to go. The waterfall then does the clearing. Image and bodily sensation are linked so that the release has somewhere to land.

There is a useful lesson here for anyone who has tried visualization and found it hard to believe in. The waterfall does not need to be vivid to work. The narrator keeps returning to the same instruction, to breathe and notice, and the image is held loosely enough that it can be adjusted to whatever the listener actually perceives.

Who is the higher self in this meditation?

When the water stops and the waterfall dissipates, what remains is the ball of light above the head. The narrator identifies this as the higher self, "the part of us that is able to make decisions clearly." It is described as the place where clarity is found when we feel confused, and the part that helps us regain balance when we feel lost. The language is not technical. It treats this higher self as something a person can simply turn toward.

The meditation's logic is that this is the part of us to lean on when the mind is noisy. "When we lean on this part and listen to this part of us," the narrator says, "the mind gets quiet." That is the work of the final third of the recording: staying present with the light, taking a breath, feeling the feet again, and noticing how connected one is to the earth and how cleansed one feels. The sequence moves from body, to imagery, to a quieter inner reference point, and then back to the body so the experience is grounded in the physical again.

What changes when you open your eyes?

The meditation does not end with a dramatic conclusion. It ends with a return to ordinary life, and the specific thing it asks the listener to notice is the to-do list. At around 12:47 the narrator says that with a new sense of what is true, you can look at the list and relax into it. You might delegate some items, or something else may come to you. The reasoning is that when you are connected to the higher self and higher mind, new ideas come through.

The box placed outside the door at the beginning returns at the end. Now the listener can look at it "with new eyes." The tasks have not vanished. What has changed is the posture from which they are seen. The meditation suggests that many of the things that feel overwhelming are less threatening when viewed from a centered, grounded state than from inside a stormy mind.

How can you use this practice when overwhelm hits?

The closing instruction is the most portable part of the recording. The narrator invites the listener to return to this centered, calm place with just a breath, at any time throughout the day. That suggests a way to use the meditation beyond the fourteen-minute session. The full visualization is a container. Once the sequence is familiar, a shorter version can be run in a few breaths: notice the feet on the floor, let the thoughts land in the box, then return attention to the breath.

A few practical notes follow from the video itself. Sit with the feet firmly on the floor and the palms relaxed and facing up, as the opening instructs. Expect the sensations to vary, and treat "nothing" as a valid result. Let the image of light and water be approximate. And when the mind returns with its list, do not argue with it. Give it a box, and come back to the breath.

The video is not a substitute for care when stress or low mood is persistent. Its own description connects overwhelm to anxiety and depression, and a short guided practice can offer a moment of steadiness without doing the larger work of addressing what is causing the load.

Where to go from here

If this meditation speaks to you, watch the full recording once, start to finish, sitting in the position it describes, and then try the box and grounding steps on their own for a few days. Notice which image lands and which feels forced, and let that tell you where to spend your attention. For a longer exploration of the same themes of breath, presence, and the higher self, search for other guided meditations from Michelle Chalfant on YouTube and compare how each one frames the same practice. The aim is not to master the visualization. It is to build a small, dependable way back to the breath whenever the to-do list gets loud.

[0:29] welcome

[0:31] I'm glad that you decided to sit with me

[0:33] at this

[0:35] time and let go of all your worries and

[0:38] stresses and concerns all your

[0:41] overwhelm and your to-do

[0:43] list and Let It Go Just for right now

[0:48] just for

[0:51] you so take a seat put your feet firmly

[0:55] on the

[0:57] floor put your palms gently on your lap

[1:01] with your palms facing

[1:03] up let's close our

[1:06] eyes and take a deep

[1:14] breath as the

[1:16] Mind begins to give you the dialogue

[1:19] that you don't have time or there's too

[1:21] much to

[1:22] do or the sense of

[1:26] overwhelm let's take all of those

[1:29] thoughts that are coming from the Mind

[1:32] put them in a box outside the room where

[1:35] you're sitting with a beautiful bow on

[1:37] them knowing that at some point you will

[1:41] get to them

[1:42] later after this conversation this

[1:46] guided visualization that we're having

[1:49] but for right now this time is just for

[1:52] you to reconnect to

[1:56] you because what the Mind

[1:59] forgets is that in order to get more and

[2:01] more

[2:02] done we must slow down and reconnect to

[2:08] ourselves so let's begin doing that

[2:11] now with our eyes

[2:16] closed let's take some nice long deep

[2:21] breaths

[2:24] inhaling and

[2:25] [Music]

[2:29] exhaling let's bring our attention just

[2:31] to the breath so when the Mind comes

[2:34] in tries to give

[2:37] us some dialogue about what we need to

[2:40] be doing instead of this let's just let

[2:43] those thoughts drift by and land in the

[2:47] box that's sitting outside the

[2:49] room knowing you'll get to them when

[2:51] we're done

[2:54] here so let's just take a few more

[2:57] breaths slowing down

[3:03] bringing your attention inside of you

[3:06] and your

[3:07] [Music]

[3:11] breath feet on the

[3:14] floor Palms in your

[3:17] [Music]

[3:20] lap slowing

[3:22] [Music]

[3:29] down

[3:30] I invite you to tunee into the bottoms

[3:34] of your

[3:36] feet and just

[3:39] notice your feet are on the

[3:42] floor and notice what's happening to the

[3:44] bottom of your

[3:46] feet as together we

[3:49] invite our feet to

[3:52] open on the

[3:55] bottom and the grounding process to

[3:58] begin allowing the the energy of Mother

[4:01] Earth to come

[4:03] up at our

[4:05] [Music]

[4:07] feet continue to breathe and notice

[4:11] what's happening to our

[4:19] [Music]

[4:22] feet you may feel a slight

[4:25] tingle warmth

[4:29] cool

[4:31] maybe a pulling

[4:35] sensation maybe nothing and that's okay

[4:38] too just take a few more

[4:41] breaths and bring your tension to your

[4:45] feet and just stay there for a few more

[4:57] [Music]

[4:59] breaths

[5:01] let's allow the

[5:03] energy and invite it up in through our

[5:08] legs and allow it to travel

[5:11] up through our bodies at its own pace we

[5:15] are directing nothing we're just

[5:17] observing the whole

[5:21] thing we're just continuing to take some

[5:23] nice slow deep

[5:26] breaths and

[5:29] watching

[5:31] feeling more and more

[5:41] present keep

[5:43] [Music]

[5:48] breathing you may feel a pulsing

[5:50] underneath your

[5:52] [Music]

[5:55] feet notice how it feels to have the

[5:58] energy come up through your

[6:01] body nice and

[6:03] [Music]

[6:05] slowly when we ground like

[6:08] this it gives our body gives our energy

[6:13] field a Dumping Ground for all of the

[6:16] thoughts and stresses and overwhelms

[6:18] that we have collected throughout the

[6:22] day and when we ground we're able to

[6:25] stay

[6:26] present even in the storm of our

[6:31] mind all the thoughts that come rapid

[6:34] firing through our

[6:36] mind when we are grounded we're able to

[6:38] stay

[6:40] [Music]

[6:50] present no different from a

[6:54] tree that has very deep

[6:57] roots it stays tall and strong even in a

[7:03] windstorm we are no different than a

[7:06] tree when we are

[7:09] grounded we stay

[7:12] present and connected to

[7:14] ourselves even when under

[7:17] stress and overwhelm and

[7:21] confusion Clarity comes when we feel

[7:29] grounded keep breathing and just notice

[7:31] what's happening to your

[7:39] [Music]

[7:44] body you may feel the sensation of

[7:47] filling up feeling

[7:49] [Music]

[7:52] full

[7:56] heat anything like that is fine there's

[8:00] no right or wrong way to do this we're

[8:02] just noticing and inviting the energy to

[8:05] come up through

[8:06] us and waiting and

[8:10] watching letting everything else go and

[8:14] being here in this

[8:26] moment next we want to notice of our

[8:30] heads a beautiful ball of

[8:34] light and it's cascading

[8:37] down over

[8:39] us through us and even into the

[8:44] Earth feel the warmth of this light on

[8:47] your body it's the perfect

[8:51] temperature feels

[8:56] [Music]

[8:58] perfect as we sit bathing in this light

[9:02] we notice from this

[9:06] light droplets of water begin to

[9:09] come come through the

[9:12] light over our bodies through our energy

[9:16] field and into the Earth and the

[9:18] droplets of

[9:22] water become streams of water coming

[9:27] down through US eventually look looking

[9:30] like a

[9:31] waterfall this beautiful

[9:34] waterfall coming down over us through us

[9:39] is cleansing us of

[9:41] all negative energy distorted thoughts

[9:45] and

[9:46] patterns

[9:48] fear overwhelm stresses and concerns all

[9:52] of it is being washed

[9:55] away carried down into the Earth or it's

[9:59] fully

[10:02] [Music]

[10:05] absorbed keep breathing and just notice

[10:08] what's

[10:10] happening tune into your body and notice

[10:14] does anything feel different you may

[10:16] feel lighter

[10:18] brighter

[10:19] [Music]

[10:21] clearer stay with

[10:24] [Music]

[10:28] it

[10:33] when the water stops the waterfall just

[10:35] starts to dissipate

[10:38] and we're left with just a beautiful

[10:40] ball of light above our heads that's

[10:42] coming down over us and through us we

[10:48] realize this is our higher

[10:52] self this is the part of us that is able

[10:55] to make decisions

[10:58] clearly

[11:02] this is where we gain Clarity when we

[11:05] feel

[11:06] [Music]

[11:10] confused this ball of light above us we

[11:13] realize is coming from our higher

[11:17] self this part of us helps us to make

[11:22] decisions when we feel

[11:26] confused helps us to gain clarity when

[11:30] we feel

[11:35] lost this is the part of us that helps

[11:38] us to regain

[11:43] balance this helps us to Center our

[11:48] being to purge what we don't need from

[11:52] our mind when we lean on this part and

[11:55] listen to this part of us the mind gets

[11:58] quiet that's what we're doing

[12:02] now we're tuning into this part of

[12:05] [Music]

[12:07] us staying

[12:11] present with this

[12:14] part taking a

[12:16] [Music]

[12:21] breath and

[12:23] another feeling our

[12:26] feet noticing how connected we are to

[12:29] the Earth

[12:30] Earth and how cleansed we

[12:33] feel from the ball of light that was

[12:38] above now we're able to open our eyes

[12:41] with a new sense of what's

[12:47] true with the ability to look at our

[12:50] to-do list and relax into

[12:54] it maybe delegate some of those items on

[12:58] our to-do list

[13:00] or whatever comes to you because when we

[13:02] are connected to the higher self and the

[13:05] higher mind new ideas come through and

[13:08] come to us now that we're connected to

[13:11] this

[13:13] space we're able to open our

[13:17] eyes and look at this box that's sitting

[13:20] outside the

[13:22] [Music]

[13:25] door now that we're

[13:27] [Music]

[13:28] grounded we're clear thinking we're

[13:31] connected to the higher mind the higher

[13:33] self the higher part of who we

[13:38] are we're able to look at this box with

[13:41] new

[13:42] [Music]

[13:45] eyes I invite you to come back to this

[13:50] very

[13:51] centered calming place with just taking

[13:55] a breath anytime throughout the

It is a visualization for setting aside intrusive thoughts about tasks and to-dos. The narrator asks you to place each thought in a box outside the room, tied with a bow, knowing you will get to them after the session. The box is a boundary, not a way of ignoring responsibilities.
The meditation asks you to bring attention to the soles of your feet and invite the energy of Mother Earth up through them. In the visualization, a ball of light above the head becomes a waterfall that washes down through the body into the earth. The narrator says it cleanses negative energy, distorted thoughts, fear, overwhelm, and concerns, and invites you to notice afterward whether you feel lighter or clearer.
The narrator describes the ball of light that remains after the waterfall as the higher self, the part of you that can make decisions clearly, gain clarity when confused, and help you regain balance. Leaning on this part quiets the mind, according to the recording.
Yes. The narrator invites you to return to this centered place with just a breath at any time during the day. Once the sequence is familiar, you can briefly notice your feet on the floor, let thoughts drift into the imagined box, and return attention to your breath.
The video's description links overwhelm and stress to anxiety and depression and says the meditation aims to help you regain balance. It is a short guided practice, not a treatment, and persistent stress or low mood calls for appropriate support beyond a single recording.
