Beyond the Story: FreedomBegins With Stillness

Before Gangaji met Papaji, her life looked pristine from the outside. She had worked relentlessly to perfect it—a strong job, flourishing health, relationships that seemed whole. Yet underneath ran a current of dread: It's not enough. It could all fail. What am I doing wrong? Childhood wounds kept surfacing, interrupting the beauty that surrounded her. She was suffering unnecessarily, and she didn't know how to stop.

In 1990, her husband Eli returned from meeting a teacher in India with letters saying simply: "This is the real deal." Gangaji flew to meet this teacher, Papaji, a disciple of the legendary Ramana Maharshi. In their first moments together, he welcomed her warmly, then asked: "What do you want?" The word that emerged from her was freedom. He smiled and said, "Good. You are in the right place."

When she asked him what to do—the standard question asked of spiritual teachers—Papaji's response cut through years of practice and technique. He quoted Ramana Maharshi: "Be still and know who you are." Not a new mantra. Not a discipline. Just: stop.

The Choice Hidden in Your Own Mind

What Gangaji discovered, and what forms the heart of her teaching, is that most people live in reactive thrall to their narratives—the stories they tell themselves about who they are, what went wrong, and what they need to fix. These stories have a structure: a beginning, a middle, an end. They move through our minds like movies we've watched a thousand times, accumulating layers of suffering that have nothing to do with present reality.

There is real suffering in the world—in bodies, in planetary systems, in political structures. But there is also unnecessary suffering: the pain we add by retelling painful events beyond the point of insight, turning them into habits. We rehearse our childhood wounds. We replay our failures. We construct entire identities around these reruns, mistaking them for truth.

The radical teaching Papaji offered, and that Gangaji has carried forward, names a choice most people don't recognize they have: you can stop telling your story. This is not the same as the philosophical debate about free will and determinism. It is simpler and more immediate—a choice available in the mental makeup of your story, in this moment, in your own mind. Many people suffer immensely from not recognizing that this choice exists.

What Happens When You Stop?

When Gangaji took Papaji's invitation seriously—when she attempted to truly be still, to stop the mental machinery—something unexpected happened. Fear arose, vast and clarifying. If she really did what he was asking, she could lose everything she had built. She told him so. His response was: "Yes, you will lose everything."

But then came the reframing that broke open her understanding. He continued: "You will lose it anyway when you die, or when some event happens. It takes everything away. So now, before that happens, in this moment you have the opportunity to stop, to open, to be still. And in that instant you can tell the truth about what is always here."

What is always here? In that opening, beneath and before and in the midst of all stories—the tragic ones, the sublime ones, the despairing and anguishing ones—there exists a dimension that is untouched by narrative. It is what Gangaji calls "perfect peace, perfect fulfillment." Not a state you achieve. Not a reward for spiritual effort. But what your own mind recognizes when it stops filling itself with its own content and opens to its own source.

The Problem With Words (And Why We Use Them Anyway)

One of Gangaji's gifts as a teacher is her honesty about language itself. Words like "peace," "love," "freedom," and "truth" have become corrupted. They are filtered through our conditioning, our narratives, our addictions to particular outcomes. When Gangaji says "peace," she may mean something radically different from what you automatically assume she means—not the absence of difficulty, but a recognition of what is unchanged by difficulty.

Yet she speaks in words anyway, because words are the tool available in this form. The real invitation is not to learn a new vocabulary but to discover what those words are pointing toward through your own direct experience. When she invites people to "open," she is not asking them to adopt a concept but to move their awareness in a particular way—to recognize that the mind that feels stuck is also the mind that is free.

Recognition Over Achievement

A distinction that echoes throughout Gangaji's teaching is the difference between learning and recognizing. Papaji was not asking her to learn something new. He was asking her to recognize what was already true, what was already here. The teachings of Ramana Maharshi—this tradition stretching back through Papaji to one of the great teachers of the twentieth century—point always to what is prior to mind, prior to story, prior to effort.

This creates an invitation quite different from most spiritual paths. You don't accumulate practices and experiences and gradually approach enlightenment. Instead, you look directly at what is already free in this moment. You stop long enough to notice that beneath the repetitive stories, beneath the mental machinery, beneath even the sense of being a separate self with a problem to solve, something is already at peace.

What makes this teaching so potent—and so challenging—is that it cannot be believed into. It cannot be acquired through effort or discipline. It can only be recognized. And recognition comes not through more doing but through the willingness to stop doing, to open the mind that has been filled with so many strategies and solutions and techniques.

Opening to What You Fear

A central part of Gangaji's work with people is inviting them to open not just to pleasant experiences but to what they've been avoiding: feelings of inadequacy, loss, death, the dissolution of the self they've worked so hard to construct. This is where the teaching moves from intellectual understanding into the embodied reality of freedom.

She asks: Can you open to fear? Can you open to loss? Can you open to death in this moment? Most people have spent their entire lives building strategies to avoid these feelings. Spiritual practice, distraction, achievement, relationships, substances—all become ways to not feel what is underneath. Yet the teaching is that in the moment you are willing to feel these things fully, to open to them rather than resist them, something shifts. The feeling moves. Or it doesn't move, but you are no longer identified with it as who you are.

Where to Go From Here

The invitation that Gangaji carries is not to become a different person, to achieve a spiritual state, or to escape this life. It is far simpler and more radical: to recognize, in this moment, what is already free. To notice that the mind that is troubled is also the mind that is aware of the trouble. To stop, even for a moment, the repetitive telling of old stories and discover what is here when the chatter stops.

This does not require years of practice or the perfect circumstances. It requires only willingness—the willingness to question what you've been told about yourself, to recognize the choice you actually have in your own mind, and to open to the possibility that freedom is not something you must chase but something you must stop chasing in order to recognize.

[0:05] I'll now welcome gangaji and we will all  sit together in silence for a few minutes

[0:11] and gangaji will let us know when the silence is  over so if you wish to close your eyes for the

[0:18] next few minutes please take take part in that  and enjoy the webinar have a great afternoon.

[0:26] so as Ricky said we all sit together about 10  minutes this is an opportunity to really just

[0:36] bring everything that has been happening and is  happening into the seat of silence in your own

[0:45] heart your own quiet mind nothing particular  to do just to be here together in silence

[7:59] silence is really the core essence the finality  the teaching the invitation I bring you today

[8:14] from my teacher Papaji through Papaji from Robin  and Maharshi and for those of you who've never met

[8:24] me before I would just give a brief summation of  my life story and how it came to an end and then

[8:34] the fulfillment began because that's really the  invitation for you and that your life story the

[8:42] story that you tell yourself the narrative that  goes on in your mind really has a beginning and

[8:52] a middle and an end as all stories do stories  are wonderful telling stories is a profound and

[9:03] moving way to share the greatest teachings and  our individual stories are wonderful - they're

[9:10] extraordinary often they're they are sources  of suffering and if that is so it's it's good

[9:20] to know that you actually have a choice that you  can stop telling your story you may not want to

[9:27] you may enjoy telling your story it's not that  you're wrong for telling your story excuse me

[9:34] but you actually have choice and many people  suffer from not recognizing that choice I know

[9:48] that they are great debates about free will  versus no.3 well I'm not exactly speaking of

[9:57] that I'm speaking of a choice that's present in  your story in the mental makeup of your story my

[10:06] story before I met Papaji looked really good  from the outside I had worked really hard on

[10:13] my story to make it better and on myself and on  my health and my relationships I had a really

[10:20] good job I was flourishing in many ways but  underneath that there was something nying at

[10:31] me that was saying it's not enough or it could  all fail could all end what am I doing wrong and

[10:42] what about my childhood which wasn't good and it  would interrupt my fulfillment it would interrupt

[10:49] the the beauty that was around me and I would  suffer unnecessarily there is suffering in the

[10:57] world there suffering in our bodies the planetary  suffering political suffering is we're well aware

[11:03] of in these times and then there's unnecessary  suffering there's the suffering that we add to

[11:10] the pain that's already present in the world and  that suffering that unnecessary suffering has to

[11:18] do with what we tell ourselves when our story  becomes a repetition of the story of suffering

[11:25] when we have a habit of retelling events that  were painful that we did suffer in but we retell

[11:35] them beyond the point of gaining insight from the  retelling just as a habit and so we have habits on

[11:43] unnecessary suffering somehow at this particular  time this was in 1990 I heard of a great teacher

[11:54] and my husband Eli actually went to meet this  teacher and he wrote me letters back saying

[12:02] this is the real deal you've got to come here to  India while I had prayed for a teacher in my mind

[12:12] and my recognition of my unnecessary suffering  and in my recognition that I didn't know exactly

[12:19] how to really in of the unnecessary suffering  I had prayed for a teacher I didn't expect it

[12:26] would be in India he would be in India or that  he would be a heat nevertheless that's where I

[12:33] found myself and in meeting my teacher Papaji and  in recognizing oh this is what I pray for this is

[12:41] a real teacher this is someone who can tell me  something that I've missed or overlooked or just

[12:50] never knew so I paid very close attention in that  moment I actually stopped attending to anything

[12:59] except what he would say and this was just in  the first few moments of our meeting and what

[13:06] he said first was welcomed in a really big way  welcome you're welcome here and then he said what

[13:15] do you want and certainly I thought about what I  wanted plenty of times in my life I thought that

[13:23] was the problem I thought of it too many times  but he was this teacher asking me what do you

[13:29] want and somehow I said freedom I could just as  easily have said peace or love or the end of my

[13:38] suffering but the word freedom came out and he  said to me good you are in the right place so I

[13:49] gave him in that moment full attention and I said  to him tell me what to do I had been to see other

[13:58] teachers before who passed through the Bay Area  and we were living in California and I thought

[14:05] they weren't wonderful and I listened to what  they told me to do I tried to do it sometimes

[14:11] it involved particular practices sometimes  it involved diets sometimes it involved a

[14:18] reevaluation of my state so I was asking him  what do I do that's what you ask a teacher and

[14:28] he said he still and that he quoted rahmanir he  said rahmanir says be still and know who you are

[14:38] so I heard that as a teaching I took that  in as a teaching and I got really in that

[14:48] moment intent on being still so that I would  know who I am I was working really at being

[14:57] still I had practiced different  kinds of mindfulness meditation

[15:02] I had practiced being there the observer I  practiced merging with States so I was just

[15:10] trying to recognize okay stillness where  are you and he say he saw this of course

[15:18] we were just in a smaller room together  and he said stop even that is too much

[15:25] really be still take this moment take this  precious lifetime and stop the word stop

[15:41] became a holy word for me but I realized when I  tell people in this part of the story they often

[15:48] hear stop as some kind of reprimand and like  a teacher saying stop that's not good stop so

[15:55] another word for stop could be just opening he  was saying to me be still open your mind don't

[16:05] fill it with what you think I'm asking you to do  just open your mind and see how far away are you

[16:15] from freedom how far away are you from peace from  love from the truth who you are well this was a

[16:31] huge moment for me I did experience the arising  of a great fear that if I really really did what

[16:43] he said which was stop I could actually lose  all that I had gained and I said that to him

[16:51] and he said yes you will lose everything this  is the opportunity to lose everything you will

[16:58] anyway when you die or when some event happens it  takes everything away so now before that happens

[17:10] in this moment you have the opportunity to stop  the open to be still and in that instant you can

[17:24] tell the truth about what is always here in that  instant your mind recognizes its own source what

[17:36] is before any and all stories after any story and  in the midst of any story what is already free

[17:46] from all stories the great sublime the horrible  despairing the anguishing stories underneath in

[17:58] the middle of surrounding those stories it is  perfect peace perfect fulfillment I stayed with

[18:09] him some time six weeks that first visit and there  were I think maybe twelve other people in the

[18:17] room at that time and become a big famous teacher  yeah and so I got to hear their questions and if

[18:25] another question arose for me I got to ask that  question he would go around the room calling on

[18:32] their something always he would get back to what  do you want where is it or what do you want where

[18:44] have you looked for it if you stop looking if in  this moment you just opened what is here so I had

[18:58] met my fulfillment I had met my true teacher and  through him that Ramana who I had of course her

[19:05] dog he's a famous famous teacher did guru but  I hadn't I had never gotten in the simplicity

[19:15] of what he said the profundity of what he is say  the invitation I had never thought it was for me

[19:22] I thought it was when I get to a certain stage  on my path or when I've accomplished what I my

[19:29] story tells me I need to accomplish my spiritual  story or my worldly story but in the meeting with

[19:38] Papaji and in his introduction to Ramana I have  been overwhelmed with the bliss of being not they

[19:50] always happy bliss I read the news I am very  aware of the news right now and the suffering

[19:58] that's going on in our cities and the suffering  with the pandemic in our world and injustice that

[20:06] is always going on all over the world in homes  and neighborhoods and cities and countries and

[20:13] regions so it's not about I'm not inviting you  to close out anything I'm inviting you to open

[20:25] and to open more fully than you can even think or  imagine and in that opening you will discover you

[20:36] naturally discover what has always been open you  can even remember a time when you were certain

[20:45] you were lost oh there was great suffering and  if you reflect on that time from this place of

[20:51] opening you will see even then there was grace  there was a presence of being your being that

[21:00] was untouched by any harm so after some time  Papaji tested me in different ways and then

[21:11] asked me to bring this invitation to you to any  who are interested he wanted it to be in the West

[21:19] and at the when he first told me that I said Oh  Papa gee I don't even know Raman his teachings I

[21:26] don't know what invite of Vedanta is and he said  good it's excellent then you will only speak from

[21:33] your own experience so he was not asking me to  learn something he was asking me to share what

[21:42] it is to be to freely be to certainly be without  closing anything out but opening to what is always

[21:54] here so I'm here at his invitation to meet you  it's my great joy to meet you in this and like

[22:04] thank 14:40 for inviting me to participate in this  and ricky and avery for running this the zoom call

[22:13] and the gangaji staff Zubin and harriet barb and  Tom for setting this up because right away when

[22:23] I came back I was living in Hawaii by then I came  back and someone said whoa you're really different

[22:32] what's happening and I just began answering her  questions and it spread very quickly and it was

[22:40] quite clear that there were more people who wanted  to know about it then I could take care of in my

[22:45] living room and in fact in this little Hawaii  house living room was even sagging so I asked

[22:54] for help and that was 30 years ago and help has  been here ever since it's the gandhiji staff

[23:05] certainly I am an object of gratitude to them but  also centers like 14:40 who make themselves and

[23:16] present themselves and serve serve all beings  in many different ways so and I thank you for

[23:25] tuning in my talks to people are not like regular  talks I don't I will say more about what it means

[23:35] what I'm speaking about and on the theme of this  particular meeting but I'm not really here to give

[23:45] you a talk I'm here for us to be for us to meet  in the deepest sense it may appear superficial

[23:55] but the potential is for it to be a meeting in  the deepest sense a meeting that transforms your

[24:02] your definition of yourself that transforms the  power your particular story or even the power the

[24:14] particular story you want our desire has so it's  in that sense it's essential that I also hear from

[24:26] you and I and we will engage in a conversation  because otherwise this can just be something that

[24:36] you hear and you cannot that you know that sounds  good no I don't agree with that so much and it's a

[24:43] it's abstract it's separate from you but when we  engage in a conversation then we can see how is

[24:51] this actually relevant to you in your particular  life with the unique circumstances that you have

[24:59] as well as the circumstances that you hold in  common with all being everywhere so at a point

[25:09] I mean you could even raise your hand now if you  have a desire to speak but I would at a point I

[25:15] will invite you to to raise your hand and if if  you have a question or you have a report or you

[25:22] have something you won't clarify that I've said  and then we can get into a conversation it's been

[25:31] profound to discover how intimate conversations  on zoom' can be I often have small group meetings

[25:39] and bigger group meetings and and there's a kind  of electricity certainly in all human meetings

[25:47] just that we are connected limbic lis but there's  an added voltage to the electricity when we are

[25:56] speaking and we are hearing and we are realizing  always more deeply the truth of who one is and how

[26:08] inclusive that is the totality of that because I'm  never suggesting that you have to look a certain

[26:16] way or act a certain way or feel or suppress  a certain way or think a certain way or talk

[26:24] a certain way it's not about changing vocabulary  or changing your circumstances although as we know

[26:30] circumstances to change it's about recognizing  what is already changeless so when I suggest or

[26:41] invite you to open to be still to stop your story  I'm really pulling and pushing your mind stream to

[26:57] the recognition of what is always still the mind  comes home to itself which is you your mind stream

[27:10] is a great power of yours but like all powers  it tries to run the show when the mind stream

[27:21] is invited back to its source it's in Wonder and  in awe and it's then a servant to the source - you

[27:34] do the truth of who you are the peace the love the  freedom so I know even words like peace and love

[27:45] and freedom can be very abstracted and certainly  we have internal definitions of those words that

[27:53] are useless so all words have become corrupted  nevertheless we we speak in words when I say peace

[28:04] it's not what we think of is peace it's not peace  that is free of conflict it's peace that is free

[28:14] even in conflict it's love that is love and free  even in the most horrible experiences of hatred

[28:28] negativity loss dryness still presence is here  so I just want to say again I'm not inviting you

[28:42] to acquire something I'm inviting you to recognize  who you are that you are and that it is a precious

[28:52] lifetime to be even if that life are certainly  all lifetimes give you great challenges and we

[29:01] are certainly in a challenge now whether it's the  challenge of injustice or the challenge of disease

[29:10] the challenge of loss the challenge of not knowing  all of those challenges can point us to the deeper

[29:22] recognition of what is here and then they are  meeting somehow radiate out so that here this beam

[29:35] of light coming from you and you and you can be a  beacon of what's possible regardless of the horror

[29:46] of the times or regardless of how bad the times  get because this teaching finally is ancient ramen

[29:59] and Maharshi gave words to it very few words but  precious words be still know who you are in Papaji

[30:09] gave beautiful articulate playful strong words to  it stop stop where you are recognize who you are

[30:20] and gangaji has appeared in your life to show that  it's just like you regular human being that you

[30:32] have full capacity to recognize the truth of your  being so I would I know Ricky said that the last

[30:44] half hour I would take questions but it's really  more like the last hour so that we have plenty of

[30:50] time to to really get into this in a deep deep way  and in a relevant way your lifetime what's that

[31:01] time great there's something in the middle of my  screen about this webinar is being recorded excuse

[31:09] me we always had little technical things that have  to be corrected but it says push continue but I

[31:16] can see Ricky at the top but I can't say runneth  over me know I could have done it oh that's all

[31:28] right I was afraid to touch it I understand yes  well gangaji and Tom would you like me to call

[31:37] on our first attendee okay I'm going to go ahead  and turn on your video if you're prepared just

[31:46] one moment Sheena you said correct yeah sure and  there Sheena are you able to turn on your video

[31:57] yep no I hear you are hi welcome  sorry you know what the room is

[32:05] dark sorry I'm in France so it's  nighttime oh good wonderful can

[32:11] you turn your volume up just a little  bit yeah yeah oh hi gangaji [Music]

[32:19] [Music] you know so beautiful  to be with you right now

[32:34] likewise um I don't have an agenda for this  question it was just I don't know if I have

[32:47] a question it looked just as I was sitting with  you I had this um it was it gave me a chance to

[32:56] be still and what came up was this idea of  I'm in such a privileged space right now and

[33:08] what can I be doing to help what's happening at  home you know I'm like and and there's really

[33:20] nothing I can do and then came this kind of  sadness and I remembered that okay so I think

[33:35] what I want to get is when you were telling your  story about Papaji and how it was a transformation

[33:40] for you I it's been a transformation for me to  have met you and to and to meet with you every

[33:49] month in the forum I mean in the webinars and  then you said the transformation that occurs is

[34:00] that one knows peace even in times of suffering  and I haven't reached the point of transformation

[34:10] I mean I did though when we were sitting still  and I started getting sad I remembered something

[34:16] that you say which is that when you it could  be an indicator that you're not present when

[34:23] you're suffering find out if it's unnecessary  or not and I did I questioned the sadness and

[34:30] I realized that being here with you and everyone  else on this call I know that we're privileged

[34:42] that were not you know under fire or maybe some  of us are in bed sick I don't know but there was

[34:50] a piece there at that moment because I was aware  that I I'm not suffering and there's nothing that

[34:58] I have to do and then I felt this like this sense  of humility you know this deep sense of humility

[35:07] just the I guess awestruck with the beauty of the  world and but when you did bring that up in the

[35:21] last section of what just before you you've turned  it over to to us to ask questions I thought yeah

[35:28] but I still keep getting caught and not being able  to be free in the midst of what I perceive are to

[35:36] the stories of pain you know the stories of my own  personal pain or the story of the world's pain and

[35:41] that when you said what Papaji asked you what you  wanted that's what I want like why aren't that I

[35:50] want to come home and have everyone tell me you've  changed what do you got and then I could say this

[35:55] is what I got this is really important of course  because certainly I mean you had a true taste of

[36:05] peace just in a moment of sitting and and everyone  on this call on this webinar has had true taste of

[36:13] bliss and love and peace and yet since that is a  state of mind or feeling it is bound to come and

[36:24] go it's in bondage all feelings this is maybe the  most profound thing Papaji ever said to me he said

[36:33] find out what comes and goes and then you'll find  out what doesn't move what's always here so then

[36:42] that became the inquiry of the investigation so  sir I would have oh she annek feelings of peace

[36:48] or do have oceanic feelings of peace but they  are feelings and by the law of nature feelings

[36:58] come and go they have a beginning they have an  end the moment before I was feeling the oceanic

[37:05] peace I was feeling something else wonderful or  horrible and then oceanic peace and then after

[37:13] oceanic peace something else thoughts come and  go definitions peace our love for God come and

[37:24] go people come and go bodies come and go planetary  systems come and go we can tell the truth of what

[37:35] comes and goes and then if you don't expect what  comes and goes to never come or to never go then

[37:46] you can see what's present even when the feeling  of anguish appears so it's not the peace feeling

[37:56] that I'm talking about I certainly don't walk  around in bliss all day mmm I'm happy most of

[38:03] the time but I'm not in bliss when I read the  newspaper if somebody cuts me off with driving

[38:10] or if somebody's rude to me in a store if I  see somebody I think is being inappropriate

[38:16] no their feelings their human feelings that are  are natural to human form that are appropriate

[38:23] if if their habitual feelings then I can say  they're unnecessary suffering and that's when

[38:30] I ask you there you know look and see how does  this fit into your story and what I would say for

[38:36] you in this moment and you can investigate this  and let me know it is true part of the story is

[38:43] well I want to feel peace all the time and if  I don't feel peace then I'm doing it wrong and

[38:51] I want to feel peace so people will recognize  it and then catch it or whatever but that's a

[38:58] it may be a beautiful story it's certainly a  spiritual story but it's still a story about

[39:05] a feeling that comes and goes now I know that  there are yogic trainings that way and Yogi's

[39:13] who can maintain particular states of mind from  3040 years but that's not what I'm speaking about

[39:21] I'm speaking about what is here before that  state of mind whether it's attained from an

[39:28] instant decades and what's here during that  state of mind and what's here when he passes

[39:37] so basically what I'm asking you and this moment  is what are you experiencing right now I am always

[39:46] here I'm always here and that feels good right  obviously yeah yes it's useful but that feeling

[40:00] is not reliable and when the feeling changes then  you have an opportunity not to get back to the the

[40:09] good feeling but to really go oh I don't feel so  good yeah I don't feel like I am always here so

[40:18] what is here then is it the question of inquiry  then we have our intelligence and our curiosity

[40:26] with you those are the gifts of the human brain  human mind to really be able to enjoy what is

[40:34] here not what should be here oh how do I get back  what was here that's a kind of bondage yeah but

[40:43] you have the freedom to inquire what is here so  if you lose this sense this blessed sense that

[40:55] I am always here and you let some other emotion  like you haven't done enough you need to do more

[41:06] what is there a feeling that comes with that  and all feeling maybe yes there's a feeling of

[41:16] of inadequacy yeah so that's the point of  inquiry in that moment you let your mind

[41:31] stream turn directly into inadequacy without  fixing it without dramatizing it without going

[41:43] on against it because those are strategies of  mine to avoid this very feeling of inadequacy

[41:49] because it's true there's a human being you are  inadequate if you know as a form you can't be

[41:58] here and there although you are here and  there we transcended that with this zoom

[42:04] call but in general that feeling of inadequacy  is a legitimate feeling so rather than getting

[42:12] rid of that or bringing some practice into so  that another feeling a better feeling will be

[42:21] generated what if you just open to inadequacy so  that you are completely inadequate in this moment

[42:40] and then you recognize if there are narratives of  storylines that go with that inadequacy you just

[42:47] push them to the side because you're going to the  experiential feeling the bodily emotional feeling

[42:57] of inadequacy I can feel my throat constrict so  much my throat begins to constrict constrict yeah

[43:08] I was like a you know you're being choked maybe  you're killed even killed by your own inadequacy

[43:16] and I'm laughing with you but I understand  that can be quite intense because all of a

[43:24] sudden sudden we are using our mind streams our  attention in a very different way we aren't using

[43:32] the attention to keep something away or to get  something we're using the attention to really

[43:39] say what is here and inadequacy that can be huge  and we can feel like oh so this is the gift of

[43:51] inquiry is actually needing death and in this  experience of inadequacy that's a form of death

[44:01] because you're losing your definition or your  hope or your goal of adequacy a purpose it's a

[44:13] beautiful beautiful hope beautiful goal but for  the purpose of discovering what doesn't coming

[44:20] though all hopes and goals are in way they cloud  the vision so when you allow the constriction in

[44:32] your throat and you allow the whatever bodily  sensations and you just send your attention

[44:40] deeper into it into that rather than running  away from there fixing what do you experience

[44:50] just in this moment there's really no right or  wrong answer I I've been feeling as you've been

[44:56] talking this kind of openness to to being it yeah  and it's not a feeling really it's in my line of

[45:06] being humble there's any humility to it you know  well that's kind of ego anyway to be adequate yes

[45:19] that's right then when you say humility and use  you know use that word just a few moments ago

[45:26] and and you talked about the awesomeness of  it yeah we we are afraid of humility if for

[45:32] the punishment of it or something like we will be  humiliated but the humility is actually it's great

[45:42] yes it's breathe do anything you tried and then  you are free and if there is doing it comes not

[45:52] from your mind but from this mystery of yourself  then your mind can follow that we are trained you

[46:02] know we go to school to be trained to lead with  our minds and that's absolutely appropriate in

[46:08] many circumstances it's appropriate to learn to  fight what's what's gonna harm you like we are

[46:17] fighting this virus and it's perfectly appropriate  to protect yourself from local harm you like where

[46:24] I'm asking me social distancing me quarantine  that's absolutely appropriate there's a threat to

[46:31] our particular survival and even it's appropriate  you know to have a moment where you don't think

[46:38] about it you deny it you ignoring you've taken the  precautions and and it doesn't exist and beautiful

[46:46] but this is something else it's not a movement  of mind it's a return of mind to what is here

[46:59] yeah that's really helpful I've been wanting  to meet you in person but I'm in France it's

[47:11] difficult oh this is so beautiful this is a  meeting in person yeah I'm so surprised with

[47:19] the first zoom calls that the person is so here  you know your your individuality yeah its present

[47:28] and it's it's beautiful hmm we see you I mean  just a taste of all the forms of the universe

[47:36] in this unique fun thank you all right thank  you so next we have Cara or Cara excuse me if

[48:06] I pronounced it wrong welcome but if you would  like to please turn on your video Here I am i

[48:16] gosh it's so amazing to see you hmm thank you so  much I'm gonna I can't I'm gonna try and get you

[48:29] on a bigger there okay nervous and excited I'm  so grateful for everybody else talking because

[48:39] I got so much I am really noticing an addiction  to a man's story and how I betray myself in that

[48:54] story and I can see it but I I'm hoping that you  can help me remember who I am what do you want

[49:11] well let me rephrase it because you said you're  hoping that I can help you remember who you are

[49:18] as I would say that's what you want but  in this relationship in this addiction

[49:22] their relationships and their addictions and  it's there's a major difference but in this

[49:28] addiction what is it you want what will  it give you if you get what you want my

[49:35] of love yes beautiful so in this moment  if you don't look anywhere for that long

[49:46] what's here

[49:59] just what your experiences and what's here really  I'm not waiting for you to say a particular word

[50:08] or state it's whatever is here that's that's  what we're meeting [Music] when you stop

[50:15] looking for love any place everything myself like  [Music] nervousness I can sense some peace some

[50:34] like the the meanness all of my emotions and

[50:53] aliveness and some love how  much not if you focus in on

[51:05] the love how big is that you find  a boundary but the top or a bottom

[51:21] now sew it in this moment of inquiry of actually  turning your attention to what you want and not

[51:36] looking to get something but actually turning  your attention towards here is anything needed

[51:57] I want to say yes because I'm still hooking in a  little bit but I really can see no this is great

[52:06] that's it you really can see no but the habit is  to say yes because I would like for him to come

[52:15] back or calm you know or whatever it is but it'd  be here right now so those are natural desires

[52:21] especially when it's an intense relationship I  don't know what the relationship is it's just

[52:26] starting over or whatever it doesn't even matter  if you can recognize if there's a natural human

[52:35] desires even addictions are natural in that  sense but there's something that is before

[52:44] natural that's before hormonal activity or before  desires for certain outcomes or before before you

[52:54] and it you and him and that's really inquiring  that's a true recognition of what's before and

[53:11] that's the point I mean I'm I'm really not  here I obviously don't know anything about

[53:18] your relationship and I'm not here to give you any  relationship counseling but I am here to invite

[53:27] you and to point you and push you and support you  in discovering this depth of love here can I feel

[53:44] like I feel like it comes because you're here  you know what can I say it's never come before

[53:55] so you have proof that that's not true it may it  is supported to come back because I'm here because

[54:08] that's what I'm doing in your life that's what  meet that's why I pappad you sent me out to to

[54:15] ring a bell so it all you were interested  I should give you some signal it's coming

[54:25] excuse me imma just do a little time that's the  point of our meeting so I've used the analogy of

[54:40] a watering hole before that yes there are watering  watering holes and we go to those watering holes

[54:48] meetings like this for nourishment and even some  animals live around the watering hole but most

[54:57] leave and go about their their usual search  for food and a life and a mate or whatever it

[55:04] may be but as soon as you're thirsty again you  know that nothing will take care of that but

[55:10] the water the essence of your being and pretty  soon you recognize that you don't have to move

[55:18] an inch for that nourishment but maybe you don't  recognize that until someone tells you or invite

[55:27] you to drink to drink so deeply that without  a doubt you recognize you are the water that

[55:35] you are being nourished by you are the love that  you discover underneath everything else and not

[55:45] as a spiritual concept but as a direct experience  when you actually meet as we just saw before when

[55:57] she was actually meeting the inadequacy then she  could actually find something under that so when

[56:05] you meet the unloved ability if that's what's  under it it usually is in most relationships if

[56:11] you actually meet that huh you see that's that's  a phantom it's a ghost but it takes facing the

[56:21] ghost to realize what's the truth is that's an  old curse takes facing the curse to defuse the

[56:31] curse that makes sense to you yeah so so when  I see it come out just just be willing to sit

[56:40] in it to just be still yeah yeah take a moment  you know you can take 12 seconds tick take 10

[56:48] minutes take 2 minutes and don't fix it don't  chase it away don't put something on top of it

[56:56] so let it be here fully if it's unloved ability  if it's inadequacy if it's weakness whatever it

[57:07] may be be here and then there is that's and  letting it be here I have to keep emphasizing

[57:13] is very much more essential than acting it  out like oh I'm unlovable oh I'm inadequate

[57:21] I'm unlovable completely fully unlovable it just  takes a second to recognize the hook of that but

[57:35] also to recognize the lie of that hmm you follow  yeah yeah totally mmm thank you so much yeah but

[57:50] your relevant question hmm really it's how are  we with one another I want this one I don't want

[57:59] that one nights and and those are natural human  attributes but in the depth of yourself the human

[58:09] is happening on the surface nothing I mean it can  be wrong that can certainly be bad behaviors are

[58:17] useless behaviors are behaviors that cause  unnecessary suffering but if we don't even

[58:23] concern ourselves with that in this moment now  be enquiry and rather we just open to the depths

[58:32] where is love that could be a good question for  you yes where is love after all and that no but

[58:43] I want it over there because it's attractive  that's right there's attraction but in this

[58:49] moment I don't want to make light of addictions  and addictive behavior I know it's miserable and

[59:04] I expect that most of us on the call have had  some at least inkling of that whether it's with

[59:12] food or people or activities or just our politics  or whatever it may be we want it to be the way we

[59:21] want it to be and it's just often not the way  we want it to be that's the that's the great

[59:30] humbling but what is the way we want it to be is  what we truly want so if you can ask yourself why

[59:41] do I truly want where am I looking for it and  if I stop looking anywhere for it what's here

[59:51] what are you experiencing right now okay Ness okay  miss yeah well it sounds like when you say they're

[1:00:03] like maybe I'm reading this into it so you can  correct me it's like okay miss yeah I think like

[1:00:17] like a flavor of self-hate or a flavor of this  is now getting to it that's I mean I say that's

[1:00:28] great it's great in the sense of you've gotten  into a deeper yes why would we want love if there

[1:00:35] weren't some sense of not having Maupin having  instead the opposite of which is self hate hmm

[1:00:43] that gets near close to the bone and of course  we don't want to experience that way and so all

[1:00:49] of our activity is about not experiencing that  but it doesn't work mm-hmm because you you can

[1:00:56] never get enough because that's always haunting  you yeah yes so this is an opportunity in this

[1:01:03] moment to actually bring self-hatred here just  yeah I just feel much fuller and and more happy

[1:01:15] just to speak that just to have that yes that's  telling you told the truth yeah that's right so

[1:01:25] it's already it's that free and from truth  and when I said earlier you had choice you

[1:01:33] know and often we don't realize we have choice I  didn't mean you have choice of this person will

[1:01:40] be with you or your life will look a certain  way I meant you have choice in the moment to

[1:01:47] actually turn your attention to what you've been  running from you have choice then to recognize

[1:01:54] what's underneath there and you have a choice  to be true to that or to at least recognize

[1:02:03] when you betray that mm-hmm and not punished I'm  not suggesting you punish yourself of course I'm

[1:02:12] not saying you know bad girl you had too much  self-hatred today it's just like oh yes we're

[1:02:19] talking you know you could've been born with this  it could been passed on in the DNA or you acquired

[1:02:26] this at an early age many children grow up to  have some sense of self-hatred because that's

[1:02:31] the way they were taught in some way bad girl  on a bad boy and it gets internalized and there

[1:02:40] are lots of ways you can deal with that but this  is not even really dealing with it it's meeting

[1:02:48] yeah I'm meted you see it is yeah the joy  is here yeah that's that's the support for

[1:02:57] me the truth no thank you no thanks  so happy you brought this here and so

[1:03:04] relevant so important so much self-hatred  in the world that goes unacknowledged and

[1:03:12] becomes bravado or becomes fundamentalism it's  just some activity of mine thank you thank you

[1:03:23] thank you Cara thank you so much afternoon thank  you alright and our next attendee guys Allah if

[1:03:39] you'd like to turn on your video and join us  thank you what's the name may be pronouncing it

[1:03:46] wrong but guys Allah it's how I'm Sabina sorry  retreat on August you know be carrying with me

[1:04:12] your talk your radio posts and mostly during  all this past three months and I just went

[1:04:21] out just to let you know that foundation for the  children that I mentioned I'm from remember I told

[1:04:27] you I was from Guatemala well it's already it's  already created register we're starting with our

[1:04:36] humanitarian activity right now as we're speaking  and III wanted to let you know because I had so

[1:04:46] much support in the community when I reportedly  do that and but besides that I had to leave I was

[1:04:59] I was in the States when they burst I had my visa  and I had to leave and at the beginning I was like

[1:05:12] a little bit no a little bit not very anxious  very tense to to move from the states and fly

[1:05:21] to another [ __ ] and well my parents I mean my  parents my grandparents I'm from Spain so I have

[1:05:32] Spain residency so I flew from the States to Spain  and when I took the decision I was in peace I was

[1:05:44] grateful to be able to afford it to do it and  and but then but the but comes to me later when

[1:05:54] I arrived here and I live alone and everything my  children are all grown up and they have their own

[1:06:01] lives and everything but when I was here I mind my  mind is the same habits that you were mentioning

[1:06:09] before my habits became so alive and my narrative  was so intense and and I I know this how this

[1:06:20] psychological time I mean when I go to the path  and then to the future with my narrative becomes

[1:06:31] so intense that really makes me suffer a lot a  lot and in demented naira to became about oh how

[1:06:44] could you got into a plane during upon them how  could you risk yourself and and all this narrative

[1:06:53] became so intense with such an emotional charge  and it's it's been difficult to to for me to stay

[1:07:04] still and see what's underneath that fear and that  anxiety I don't know if I'm explaining I'm trying

[1:07:16] to you are you're telling the truth I can tell  you what I'm hearing and you let me know it if

[1:07:23] I haven't gotten it correctly it's like something  maybe all the stress of the change and everything

[1:07:30] plugged you back into a an old kind of drama in  your mind and there is a lot of stress going on

[1:07:40] and so they definitely one of the the reactions we  have to stress isn't anxiety and it's not you know

[1:07:50] in terms of survival that's it's not unadvised  because if we're anxious we are paying attention

[1:07:56] to what needs to be paid attention to but what I'm  hearing you and when I hear people talk about this

[1:08:03] anxiety it's inappropriate anxiety you you've  actually taken care of what you need it to do

[1:08:08] and so the anxiety becomes some way of punishing  you that you're not listed or you're not all the

[1:08:18] time it's unnecessary and it has to do with you  know some old latent habit that didn't have an

[1:08:30] opportunity to spring to life but then when you  pushed here it here it comes an old ghost an old

[1:08:39] demon an old tendency and so what an opportunity  now if you fight that demon the demon made appear

[1:08:49] to go away but it will come back stronger and  if you ignore it you know you're on top of the

[1:08:56] anxiety you get frozen or something and if you  just dramatize it in your luckily and anxious and

[1:09:05] tearing your hair you know it's you know that  it just it's useless it's just more drama so

[1:09:11] it's really the willingness to actually let your  attention fall into the fear that is the root of

[1:09:20] anxiety without fear being bad without judging  fear because fear is natural to all life it's

[1:09:29] part of our survival and the neck mechanism just  to to open to the fear and it's a fear of losing

[1:09:39] whether that losing is the ultimate loss which is  death and our losing health or losing momentum in

[1:09:49] one's life are losing what we had and we do lose  and so the the way the Papaji would always say

[1:09:59] this it was so profound as lose everything right  now so losing is not an issue lose at all there's

[1:10:10] all your enlightenment or your unenlightened  all your good work or your bad work are you

[1:10:20] positive events all your negative events you  just moves it off and what's here in this moment

[1:10:36] in the core my mind is very active right  now this once to one wants to ask you how

[1:10:47] can you lose oh how how it's I mean I wanted  it but uh it's like my and I wanted to if you

[1:10:56] want it so that it will give you something  that's not quite losing its right losing all

[1:11:03] its really meeting that but meeting death in  a way that we can relate to by the activity

[1:11:12] of our minds so in this moment if you have no  hope of anything getting better and you stop

[1:11:25] fighting that hopelessness or the fear  that generates the hopelessness and you

[1:11:31] stop like trying to make it alright then  your mind has nothing to do but open can

[1:11:42] you open to fear or can you open to loss that  can open to death in this moment my discomfort

[1:11:56] without an agenda that if you open to it you  will be fixed it's like without a future just

[1:12:10] now that goal yeah without a goal yes without  a goal goal beautiful as girls may be in this

[1:12:17] moment of enquiry there's no future that's where  you go on that there's no past that's where the

[1:12:26] punishment is generated or the incentives  but in just this moment now that you're

[1:12:33] saying all this i mm my body feels all this  like electrical sensations like electricity

[1:12:45] tremors yeah and my habit when all this  arises my habits my usual habits are no

[1:12:58] this is not what I wanna be this is not what  I want to feel did it's it's automatically I

[1:13:07] don't really think about it yeah it's like you  were saying you get numb or you just debate or

[1:13:14] just dissociate or it's so automatically and I  beginning to feel or I get paralyzed you know my

[1:13:23] my mind my body it but I have I have noticed  that comes that usually comes like that and

[1:13:32] that's no you know it's you learned how to  deal with it it's okay there's no judgment

[1:13:38] on that that's really fine it has its place  you can get them through things when you you

[1:13:44] know just really steel yourselves to do  it like this is just something different

[1:13:49] so even underneath that getting rigid  or keeping it together or just you just

[1:13:58] as you say the electricity the energy and the  vibration that's happening in your solar plexus

[1:14:08] we're in your heart your throat just just  to allow that lifeforce to be here as it is

[1:14:18] hmm what's your experience like miss Magnus yeah  yeah nothing being alive you stealing everything

[1:14:39] yes yes allowing no go ahead I interrupted  you know a lot allowing allowing myself to

[1:14:49] these lightness however it comes and goes and  however it can be felt like or that's freedom

[1:14:59] that's freedom then you can recognize quite  clearly without working it out what comes

[1:15:07] and goes and sometimes the electricity is  intensely here I mean sometimes you have

[1:15:14] to take some action with it you have to lie  down you have to go back see in nature it's

[1:15:20] all totally appropriate and recommended but  finally just to be able to open this yes to

[1:15:30] be here as the source of it all then you aren't  haunted by it then it doesn't drive you it's

[1:15:44] it's appearing in you like weather appears  an electrical storm thunder and lightning

[1:15:52] wind maybe most like when like some winds  very uncomfortable but they're not personal

[1:16:01] they're natural phenomena this too is that it's  comes with this body with most bodies but maybe

[1:16:17] it's more with this particular body it often is  that way that we have more weather patterns just

[1:16:24] like certain places on the pack on the planet  have more weather than other places so say

[1:16:29] there's a lot of webbing yeah I can just noting  whether it be the weather and then you recognize

[1:16:38] your untouched in core you are the stillness but  all this wind and energy and electricity is gone

[1:16:49] thank you I'm not saying I'm not saying to  push yourself into that place it's just yes

[1:16:58] because it's sometimes quite appropriate to you  know to break the pattern in whatever way the

[1:17:06] walk a conversation with a friend whatever  that's all allowed and perfect but then by

[1:17:15] yourself when you you feel this there is an  invitation and a possibility to go deeply

[1:17:21] inside but I want to just also really say  how happy I am about you your connections

[1:17:29] I hope you connected here the shower I know  that you she wanted to speak to you and just

[1:17:34] the possibility of supporting children know  how beautiful that is and and how recognize

[1:17:43] that is so thank you very much that's also thank  you thank you thank you for joining us gangaji

[1:17:57] would you like to take another question or two  I think I can do one more I'm having some throat

[1:18:03] things but I had my handy cough drops oh oh  all right so next up we have Johnny here go

[1:18:10] ahead and Johnny for comfortable please turn on  your video for us thank you joining us Johnny

[1:18:23] mute hi oh there you are hi hi hi it's so  nice to be here with you feel the same way

[1:18:37] yeah I want to just thank you for being such a  generous and graceful and just a real guiding

[1:18:51] light in my life the last year it's been I'm  emotional I'd say this of course but I really

[1:18:58] do I see such an immense light from within you  and and I stand and I'm so grateful to be able

[1:19:07] to recognize that that's my light as well yes  it's beautiful it's beautiful and yeah do you

[1:19:18] mind if I just dive right in sure yes okay so I  have so much to share I have so much love that

[1:19:30] I want to express and I and I know that I'm  not alone and I don't want to single myself

[1:19:38] out as being somehow more capable and ready of  shining but I do find myself so frustrated at

[1:19:47] I just I'm struggling because I your generosity  is so incredible and I you know taking watching

[1:19:58] you filled these other questions and and then  I'm where I'm recognizing I'm like we've got

[1:20:03] all these other things in the world to do within  these issues but then I realize that every one

[1:20:08] of these issues is a microcosm of the whole  thing and I see that it's so beautiful but my

[1:20:14] I guess I don't know what I'm saying I think  I'm I'm struggling with my reactivity and I

[1:20:23] think my activity is keeping me from shining  as brightly as I could and I know right now so

[1:20:29] John into me just interrupt what if that part  that my reactivity is keeping me from shining

[1:20:36] this bright I could that's the story what  if you drop that just that story long yeah

[1:20:46] then the charge of the reactivity it it has no  nothing to charge with you know it's like you

[1:20:54] just you just dropped a line yeah okay you're  reactive so you reactive it's that human nature

[1:20:59] to be reacting but if you don't have charge with  that does that really have anything to do with the

[1:21:06] light that's coming from you in this moment no not  at all and look you're giving it to all the people

[1:21:13] on this call I think there's five or hundred  people on this call so we're getting to see

[1:21:18] you up close it's beautiful it's beautiful to be  seen I think that's one of the big issues in the

[1:21:27] world is we don't see each other we don't we don't  eliminate everything we think we know we just know

[1:21:35] we're so shrouded and these filters to see the  world and and I see so much that I'm sensitive

[1:21:41] to a lot of that possibly more than most I don't  want to end it's hard to qualify or quantify it

[1:21:47] but I see so much of that ignorance I see so much  of that sooner world with this with this crowd is

[1:21:56] limited an ignorant worldview and I just want  to be suit for Who I am right now and they yeah

[1:22:03] I mean yet you want to be seen and we want and  that's the be of inquiry so the secret the secret

[1:22:10] honestly I promise you I guarantee it with my life  is to be willing to see yeah and then it doesn't

[1:22:21] mean you're universally seen people will see  you or they won't see it's it's a mystery but in

[1:22:27] the seeing itself even seeing through reactivity  you're still seeing you may be reacting in part to

[1:22:35] what you're seeing but you're not reacting totally  to what you're seeing you you are primarily seen

[1:22:42] and you recognize you're seeing aspects of your  own self yeah and you know that's both beautiful

[1:22:52] and horrible because it's the totality and I'm  reacting to is right it's you know my own anger

[1:23:03] at my own complicity or yes yes and you know  that can be very useful it can be part of your

[1:23:11] intelligence to recognize oh my god what I hate in  this is is what I haven't met here and that's part

[1:23:19] of maturing and intelligence developing and and  taking a stand how beautiful I mean this precious

[1:23:27] life but when it comes from seeing yes then it's  grounded and they don't have to change for you to

[1:23:35] see or they don't have to see you for you to see  it's you are free to see and it can have profound

[1:23:45] effects on how you live your life what you  stand for what you offer to people and and also

[1:23:55] your humility at being reactive at times you know  that's it's really great that we are human beings

[1:24:03] in that human being this it can be very hardly as  it's been spoken a couple of times today and that

[1:24:09] humbling itself is then a kind of overflowing of  love and prostration to the mystery of it and to

[1:24:19] the fact that as individuals we are actually not  in control of it that's not where our choices our

[1:24:25] choice is to recognize that we can meet we can  see and and we can bear whatever is seen in love

[1:24:38] yeah I think I am able to access that love when I  when I and not even when I'm not trying to control

[1:24:47] anything you know when that story line that you  know I have I could have any power to control any

[1:24:55] of this but but that's a habit that's a better  deep old habit for me that's wisdom to see that

[1:25:03] yes as somebody was speaking about addiction when  we are addicted to the powers of the mind and so

[1:25:10] that is a huge event when you disengage from that  habit or you even recognize wow this is a habit

[1:25:17] because we get fed in something maybe it's just  adrenaline from the habit so there is a choice

[1:25:25] to be sober in that to be willing to experience  all the the craving for the old way of doing it

[1:25:36] mentally emotionally physically however and to not  move just to to be absolutely still man isn't that

[1:25:47] such a radical call for these times because  we have people out in the streets right now

[1:25:55] and you know I've been the one saying we have  to take stock we have to look within big bill

[1:26:05] and know thyself and I get this think we have to  act you know so there's another question on with

[1:26:12] the asking how we counter this still the strength  of this illness with meaning really meeting this

[1:26:19] moment where I do something is called for I'd  I just yeah Adam I agree and I think the very

[1:26:26] question how is a really good question but the  problem is when we immediately give an answer

[1:26:33] from our minds to that if that can be the question  that you can be you open to that question and then

[1:26:41] your discovery is how in fact you respond to  these times then maybe it is on the street or

[1:26:48] maybe it is in retreat who can say you don't know  that beforehand it's just your willingness to say

[1:26:54] how and in that there's an availability and  in this moment you are serving everyone who's

[1:27:03] looking at your face how did that happen well in  it happened because you raised your hand for one

[1:27:09] thing because you wanted to engage because you're  here so what a mystery that we the hell gets taken

[1:27:18] care of listen it is quite appropriate to stand  up and to demonstrate and to say no dislike we

[1:27:28] are doing with the virus - say it - injustice -  that's a virus it's infected our our human strain

[1:27:34] so yes yes and no are both really finally this  this willingness to see to give to enquire to ask

[1:27:47] to discover yeah that letting the how be humbled  in the face of the mystery is yes that's well

[1:27:59] that's right it's delicious - so big is in charge  as it is it's just a then the mind recognizes how

[1:28:15] big oh how perfect then you're the last one to  speak on this particular call this particular

[1:28:24] meeting they're relevant I'm so grateful thank  you thank you so grateful thank you Johnny

[1:28:43] well thank you found it cheese would you like to  close this out here the last few minutes well I'd

[1:28:50] like to thank you Ricky I really appreciate your  adaptability and the format and every working the

[1:28:59] board and everyone the multi-university point  employee and everyone who called in everyone

[1:29:07] who attended whether you smoke or not just the  attendance in the presence and the connection and

[1:29:15] the miracle of connection so and we're really  happy they're doing that you all thank you

[1:29:31] you

Real suffering exists in bodies, planetary systems, and political structures. Unnecessary suffering is what we add by repeatedly retelling painful stories beyond the point of learning from them—turning them into habits that keep us identified with past events. Gangaji teaches that recognizing this difference is the first step to freedom.
Rather than fighting the stories, the invitation is to recognize that you have a choice—something most people don't know they possess. By stopping the mental machinery, opening your mind, and being still, you can recognize what exists beneath and independent of all stories. This recognition itself naturally dissolves the compulsive retelling.
Being still does not mean forcefully suppressing thoughts or becoming numb. It means opening your mind rather than filling it with what you think you should be doing. It is an invitation to stop searching and to recognize what is already here—the peace and freedom that are untouched by any story.
In this tradition, enlightenment is not achieved through accumulating practices but recognized as what is already true. The teaching points to freedom that is prior to all effort, all stories, all becoming. What blocks recognition is the belief that you must first accomplish something or reach a certain stage—which is itself a story.
The invitation is not to push yourself into discomfort but to be willing to feel what arises without turning it into a story about what it means. When you allow fear or loss to be present as sensation, without the narrative layer, something shifts—the feeling moves, or you recognize yourself as the awareness in which it appears, not the feeling itself.
Gangaji's teacher Papaji was a student of Ramana Maharshi, one of the great teachers of the twentieth century. Gangaji carries forward the core teaching of self-inquiry and direct recognition of what is prior to mind. The invitation remains the same: stop seeking, open to what is here, and recognize your true nature.
