When the Future ArrivesUnannounced: Faith and Surrender

On Christmas Eve 2020, the world had been in lockdown for nine months. The pandemic death toll was climbing toward half a million. The future was not just uncertain—it was genuinely unthinkable. And yet a church in Vancouver lit candles, sang carols, and asked its congregation to contemplate something radical: What does it mean to say yes to what you cannot control?

This is the St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church Christmas Eve Service, preserved on YouTube as an artifact of the pandemic era. But it is far more than a historical record. It is a sustained, liturgical meditation on faith when faith seems least rational—when the future has proven itself radically, devastatingly unpredictable, and we are asked to keep hoping anyway.

An Inclusive Welcome

The service opens with a welcome that immediately signals this is not nostalgia or escapism. The congregation describes itself as "an open-hearted open-minded LGBTQ affirming congregation that walks in the path of Jesus because we long for greater peace love and justice in the world." It is a statement that refuses easy certainty. They acknowledge they worship on the "traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish, Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples," and commit to reconciliation as "an ongoing process that involves our heart and our actions." This is a church that insists on naming both what is wrong and what is sacred. The welcome concludes with an invitation: "Whoever you are, whoever you love, whatever doubts and questions you bring—you are welcome here. You have a place here at St. Andrews Wesley."

Against that open-armed backdrop, the service unfolds in candlelight. Advent candles are lit in sequence—hope, peace, joy, and love—each a threshold toward the final, Christ candle, which burns as a reminder of "the one who made peace, a light that was never extinguished here on earth." Biblical passages from Isaiah and Luke are read with reverence. Carols are sung—"O Come, All Ye Faithful," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "O Little Town of Bethlehem"—their melodies creating a container for the liturgy, turning words into embodied truth.

What the Magazine Could Not Predict

The heart of the service is a sermon that transforms the familiar Christmas narrative into something urgent and contemporary. The speaker begins with a small, almost comic anecdote that carries surprising weight. A member of the congregation—Janet—was clearing out old magazines when her daughters Colleen and Catherine stopped her. One magazine in particular, they insisted, was a "collector's item." It was a 2019 issue of McLean's titled "The Year Ahead: A Guide to the People, Trends and Movements That Will Reshape the World."

The sermon walks through the articles: predictions about Olympic athletes in Tokyo, Elizabeth Warren as the likely next U.S. president, analysis of whether the growing deficit was a genuine problem. "Little did they know," the speaker says. "They had no idea." By Christmas Eve 2020, all those predictions had been swept away by something the magazine's editors—and every other prognosticator—had completely failed to anticipate. "Even some of our very brightest and most astute," the speaker notes, "those in tune with the times and often able to gauge a shift in cultural weather were off significantly wide of the mark."

The sermon quotes physicist Niels Bohr: "Prediction is very difficult especially if it's about the future." It is a joke, but it carries real spiritual weight. The point is not that we are fools for trying to plan. The point is that we live in a fundamental mismatch: we are creatures who crave certainty, who spend enormous energy trying to predict and control the future, and yet the future consistently arrives as something we did not and could not see coming.

"Who could have predicted where we'd be right now at the end of 2020? We can't predict what we can't control and in so many ways the future of the world and of our lives is out of our hands. Granted we're not complete spectators in the bleachers either. We do more than just watch life happen. We're in the game but most of us at a very young age realize that the game doesn't follow our command any more than we can pin the moon to the sky."

The Question at the Heart of Faith

This could be a sermon of despair. Instead, it turns to Mary, and the entire theological frame shifts. The full Gospel of Luke passage is read aloud—the angel Gabriel appearing to a young woman named Mary, greeting her with "Greetings, favored one. The Lord is with you." Mary is terrified. The angel tells her she will conceive and bear a son, that he will be the Son of the Most High. Mary asks the obvious question: "How can this be since I am a virgin?" The angel assures her that "nothing is impossible with God." And then Mary answers: "Here am I, the servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word."

The sermon sits with this moment for a long time. It reflects on what this response actually means in the context of 2020. During the pandemic year, the speaker notes, people have been asking desperate variations of a single question: "Where was the angel when my plans fell apart? Where was the angel when my wedding was canceled, my job was lost, my loved one was alone in a hospital?"

The sermon recounts a conversation with a friend during this period—someone distressed about whether everything would work out, anxious about the future. And the friend's response was this: "It is not for them to decide... I am a servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word."

Surrender as Spiritual Practice

This is not resignation. This is not passivity or the abdication of responsibility. Mary's response to the angel is something far more active and more difficult: it is the willingness to say yes to a future she cannot control, cannot see clearly, cannot fully understand. She does not know what "yes" will cost her—the physical pain of childbirth, the social danger of being an unmarried pregnant woman in occupied Judea, the heartbreak that will come. But she says it anyway. She throws her life toward a future she cannot predict.

The sermon frames this not as ancient piety disconnected from our lives, but as a model for how to live in a world that refuses to be predicted or managed. It is not about accepting suffering or pretending things are fine. It is about developing the spiritual capacity to keep moving, keep trusting, keep saying yes, even when the future is radically unknown. It is about becoming, as Mary becomes, a servant of something larger than our own control.

The carols that punctuate the readings—with their repeated gestures toward arrival, toward light breaking into darkness, toward hope born in unlikely circumstances—reinforce this principle at a depth beyond words. These are not songs of certainty or reassurance. They are songs of waiting, watching, and then the sudden irruption of grace. "O Come, All Ye Faithful" is a summons to believers to come and witness something beyond rational expectation. "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" narrates the precise moment when peace arrives unannounced. "O Little Town of Bethlehem" finds the sacred not in power or spectacle but in stillness and hiddenness.

By the close of the service, the congregation has moved through three distinct spiritual movements: first, the acknowledgment of powerlessness (the magazine's failure, our inability to predict or control); second, the presentation of a model (Mary's willingness to say yes to the unknowable); and third, a prayer that asks not for the future to be secure or controllable, but for grace "in this time of trouble" and "in times of vulnerability and joy."

What Makes This Service Matter

What makes this service remarkable is not its liturgical form—that is ancient and traditional—but its refusal to hide from the moment. This is not a service that pretends 2020 did not happen, that treats Christmas as escapism. It is a service that takes the fact of radical, inescapable uncertainty and asks: Can we transform this into an occasion for spiritual deepening? Can we learn from Mary how to say yes when we cannot see the future? Can we light candles not because we are certain they will dispel the darkness, but because the lighting itself is an act of faith?

The answer the service offers is not naive optimism. It is something older and stranger: the willingness to keep faith with something beyond our control, to keep hoping without knowing how things will turn out, to light candles in the darkness not because we are certain they will bring security, but because the lighting itself is an orientation of the heart toward grace.

Where to Go From Here

This service, now available on YouTube, speaks most directly to those in the midst of uncertainty—those facing futures they cannot predict, those wrestling with how to maintain hope when circumstances are beyond their control. But it speaks more broadly to anyone seeking to understand how faith functions not as certainty but as a deeper kind of trust.

For those seeking to understand their own relationship with uncertainty, Mary's response—"Let it be with me according to your word"—offers a starting point for contemplation. Not as a command to passive acceptance, but as an invitation to ask: What would it mean to say yes to my life as it actually unfolds, rather than as I had planned? What spiritual resources do I need to develop in order to keep moving with faith when I cannot predict what comes next?

Diving deeper into the Gospel of Luke—particularly the Annunciation passage and the birth narratives—offers rich material for reflection. The carols themselves, with their theological density, reward close listening and meditation. For those interested in faith that includes rather than excludes, that acknowledges both justice and grace, the church's stated commitment to LGBTQ inclusion and to reconciliation on stolen land models a contemporary spirituality that refuses false innocence.

[8:05] a reading from the hebrew scriptures the

[8:07] prophet isaiah chapter 40

[8:10] comfort o comfort my people says your

[8:12] god

[8:13] a voice cries out in the wilderness

[8:16] prepare the way of the lord

[8:18] make straight in the desert a highway

[8:21] for our god

[8:22] every valley shall be lifted up and

[8:25] every mountain and hill be made

[8:27] low the uneven ground shall become level

[8:30] and the rough

[8:31] places a plane then the glory of the

[8:34] lord shall be revealed and all people

[8:36] shall see it together

[8:38] for the mouth of the lord has spoken

[8:41] i'm reading from the gospel of luke

[8:44] chapter 1 verses 26 to 38.

[8:48] in the sixth month the angel gabriel was

[8:51] sent by god to a town in galilee called

[8:53] nazareth

[8:54] to a virgin engaged to a man whose name

[8:57] was joseph

[8:59] of the house of david the virgin's name

[9:02] was mary

[9:03] and he came to her and said greetings

[9:06] favored one

[9:07] the lord is with you but she was much

[9:11] perplexed by his words and pondered

[9:14] what sort of greeting this might be

[9:17] the angel said to her do not be afraid

[9:21] mary for you have found

[9:23] favor with god and now you will conceive

[9:26] in your womb and bear a son and you will

[9:29] name him

[9:30] jesus he will be great

[9:33] and will be called the son of the most

[9:36] high and the lord god will give him the

[9:39] throne of his ancestor david

[9:42] he will reign over the house of jacob

[9:44] forever

[9:45] and of his kingdom there will be no end

[9:49] mary said to the angel how can this be

[9:52] since

[9:53] i am a virgin the angel said to her the

[9:56] holy spirit

[9:58] will come upon you and the power of the

[10:01] most

[10:01] high will overshadow you therefore

[10:05] the child to be born will be holy

[10:08] he will be called son of god and now

[10:11] your relative elizabeth

[10:13] in her old age has also conceived a son

[10:17] and this is the sixth month for her who

[10:20] was said to be barren

[10:22] for nothing is impossible

[10:26] with god then mary said here am

[10:29] i the servant of the lord let it be

[10:33] with me according to your word

[10:36] then the angel departed from here

[10:48] [Music]

[10:53] [Applause]

[10:56] [Music]

[11:01] it came up

[11:16] [Music]

[11:20] near the earth to

[11:27] touch

[11:30] peace on the earth

[11:50] [Music]

[11:52] to hear the

[11:58] singing

[12:00] still through the glory

[12:05] skies they come

[12:08] with peaceful

[12:11] [Music]

[12:28] [Music]

[12:37] oh

[12:39] [Music]

[12:51] it's

[12:53] [Music]

[13:25] a reading from the gospel according to

[13:27] luke

[13:29] in those days a decree went out from

[13:32] emperor augustus

[13:33] that all the world should be registered

[13:36] this was the first registration

[13:38] and was taken while quirinius was

[13:40] governor of syria

[13:42] all went to their towns to be registered

[13:45] joseph also

[13:46] went from the town of nazareth in

[13:48] galilee to judea

[13:50] to the city of david called bethlehem

[13:53] because he was descended from the house

[13:55] and the family of david he went to be

[13:58] registered with mary to whom he was

[14:00] engaged and who was expecting a child

[14:04] while they were there the time came for

[14:06] her to deliver the child

[14:08] and she gave birth to her firstborn son

[14:11] and wrapped him in bands of cloth and

[14:14] laid him in a manger

[14:15] because there is no room for them in the

[14:17] end

[14:21] a reading from luke chapter 2 verses 8

[14:24] through 14. in that region there were

[14:28] shepherds

[14:28] living in the fields keeping watch over

[14:31] their flocks

[14:32] by night then an angel of the lord stood

[14:36] before them

[14:37] and the glory of the lord shone around

[14:40] them

[14:41] they were terrified but the angel

[14:45] said to them do not be afraid

[14:49] for see i am bringing you good news of

[14:52] great joy for all the people

[14:55] for you is born this day in the city

[14:58] of david a savior who is the messiah

[15:02] the lord and this will be a sign

[15:05] for you you will find a child wrapped

[15:09] in bands of cloth and lying

[15:12] in a manger and suddenly there was with

[15:16] the angel of multitude

[15:18] of the heavenly host praising god and

[15:21] saying

[15:22] glory to god in the highest heaven

[15:25] and on earth peace among those

[15:29] whom he favors

[15:32] when the angels had left them and gone

[15:34] into heaven

[15:36] the shepherds said to one another let us

[15:38] go now to bethlehem

[15:40] and see this thing that has taken place

[15:43] which the lord had made known to us

[15:46] so they went with haste and found mary

[15:48] and joseph

[15:49] and the child lying in the manger when

[15:52] they saw this

[15:54] they made known what had been told them

[15:56] about this child

[15:59] and all who heard it were amazed at what

[16:01] the shepherds told them

[16:03] but mary treasured all these words and

[16:06] pondered them in her heart

[16:08] the shepherds returned glorifying and

[16:11] praising god

[16:12] for all they had heard and seen as

[16:16] it had been told them

[20:33] that they were in the game but didn't

[20:36] shape the course of events

[20:38] had it been up to them i suspect neither

[20:41] of them would have chosen a birth in a

[20:43] barn

[20:44] far from home that pregnant night

[20:49] recently in a conversation after a

[20:52] sunday morning

[20:53] zoom uh sunday morning service in our

[20:55] coffee hour zoom

[20:57] three of us reflected on how incredibly

[21:00] difficult

[21:01] it must have been for mary to give birth

[21:04] that night

[21:05] a young girl very likely a teenager

[21:08] of maybe 15 years of age

[21:12] giving birth to her first child away

[21:14] from home

[21:15] with no mother at her side no midwife

[21:19] to tell her everything was going just

[21:21] fine she had seen it a hundred times

[21:23] before

[21:24] there she was laboring on her own in the

[21:27] straw

[21:28] like an animal surrounded by animals and

[21:31] all of their earthy aromas no doubt she

[21:34] cried

[21:35] into the night and all the stars did

[21:39] were quietly shine at a long and safe

[21:43] distance apparently

[21:46] joseph was there but very likely out of

[21:48] his depth and half scared

[21:50] out of his wits where was the angel when

[21:53] you needed it

[21:54] off singing to some shepherds in the

[21:57] field keeping watch over their flock by

[21:59] night really

[22:00] is that truly the best use of celestial

[22:02] resources

[22:05] that night especially mary and joseph

[22:07] must have known

[22:08] that they didn't control their life only

[22:10] their response to it

[22:13] apparently i'm a very slow learner

[22:16] because part of me doesn't want to

[22:18] accept this

[22:19] i still find myself arguing with reality

[22:22] even though reality

[22:24] always wins i fight against it

[22:27] shout and complain about it but no

[22:29] matter

[22:30] reality insists on having its way and

[22:33] despite my protests the fires

[22:35] rage or flood waters rise or a virus

[22:40] ferociously spreads

[22:43] at some point we need to accept the

[22:45] facts

[22:46] except where we are and with young mary

[22:49] find a way

[22:50] to deal with it okay so this is going to

[22:52] happen in a barn really

[22:55] the covet virus is infecting so many

[22:57] people sending so many to the hospital

[23:00] killing so many

[23:01] still and so our christmas and our

[23:04] hanukkah and before that diwali

[23:07] are practically stopped it's as if the

[23:10] grinch

[23:10] came this year and never had a change of

[23:13] heart to bring it all

[23:14] back as we remain cut off from our

[23:17] friends

[23:17] and families and community

[23:21] this service on a screen is all we have

[23:25] for a christmas eve

[23:26] service really that's a bit of my mind

[23:30] i complain and argue with reality

[23:34] j.r.r tolkien's book the fellowship of

[23:37] the ring

[23:38] has a lovely quote the protagonist frodo

[23:41] said to the wise wizard gandolf i wish

[23:45] none of this had ever happened and

[23:48] gandalf responded so do all who live to

[23:52] see such times

[23:53] but it is not for them to decide

[23:56] all we have to decide is what to do with

[23:59] the time

[24:00] that is given to us

[24:04] thanks a million gandalf but the wizard

[24:07] is right

[24:08] and even echoes the greek stoic

[24:10] philosopher epictetus who wrote well

[24:13] over 2000 years ago

[24:14] there are things in our power and things

[24:17] not in our power

[24:19] and wisdom knows the difference

[24:23] she may have been very young but it

[24:25] seems mary

[24:26] knew the difference perhaps we can take

[24:28] a page from her playbook

[24:31] here we are in a barn-like situation in

[24:35] other words a highly undesirable

[24:37] situation

[24:38] without the people we'd like by our side

[24:42] and something is waiting to be born the

[24:44] labor pains

[24:46] are a sure sign something is waiting to

[24:48] be

[24:49] born and we're in the birth panes now

[24:53] in her book traveling mercies and lamont

[24:56] writes about a conversation a friend of

[24:59] hers had on a plane

[25:00] her seat mate must have been an

[25:02] unusually good listener

[25:04] because she found herself sharing some

[25:06] of the difficulties in her life

[25:08] that overwhelmed her one thing on top of

[25:11] another

[25:12] anne's friend said it turned out this

[25:15] man worked for the dalai lama

[25:18] and he said gently that they believe

[25:21] when a lot of things start going wrong

[25:23] all at once it's to protect something

[25:26] big and

[25:27] lovely that's trying to get itself born

[25:30] and that there's something needs for you

[25:33] to be distracted so that it can be born

[25:35] as perfectly as possible

[25:39] might it be possible that something new

[25:42] is waiting to be born and right now

[25:44] we're in labor pains something big and

[25:47] lovely is trying to get itself born in

[25:50] you and in us

[25:51] and the problems we have that you have

[25:53] and many of us

[25:54] share are just a distraction so it can

[25:58] be born as perfectly as possible

[26:00] born to us all

[26:04] and so once again i wonder if we need to

[26:07] turn back to

[26:08] mary as a guide after all she knows a

[26:11] thing or two about birth pains that come

[26:13] even when you're traveling far from home

[26:16] and are stuck in a barn

[26:18] we don't know the details but somehow it

[26:21] all came out

[26:23] all right and a child was born that

[26:26] star-studded night

[26:28] i wonder if mary added to her major

[26:32] pains

[26:33] by resenting joseph or not making a

[26:35] reservation

[26:37] or resenting having to give birth in the

[26:39] straw

[26:40] or resenting being alone at a time like

[26:42] this

[26:43] or or did she take a different approach

[26:47] did she return to her core disposition

[26:50] that presented itself nine months

[26:52] earlier when gabriel unexpectedly

[26:55] arrived at her side one night

[26:58] and shared some unbelievable news

[27:01] and her quiet response i am a servant of

[27:04] the lord

[27:06] let it be with me according to your

[27:09] will now too

[27:13] in this predicament did she simply go

[27:15] with it

[27:16] did she say initially really the birth

[27:19] pains are starting

[27:20] now and there's no one around to help

[27:22] and i'm stuck in a barn of all places

[27:26] okay god let it be with me according to

[27:29] your will

[27:31] and then she did all she could do and

[27:33] rode the wave

[27:35] of a new birth

[27:38] about 50 years ago almost not quite

[27:42] i took a week-long poetry course

[27:44] workshop at nara mata

[27:46] with reverend gary patterson that was so

[27:49] long ago

[27:50] he was not yet doctor or very reverend

[27:52] just a

[27:53] an ordinary reverend and that was the

[27:56] first time i

[27:57] came upon denise levertov's poem via

[28:00] vowel

[28:01] and it has since been a touchstone

[28:04] as i think of mary that difficult night

[28:08] and what she may have to teach me or us

[28:11] this poem comes to mind

[28:14] as swimmers dare to lie face to the sky

[28:18] and water bears them

[28:21] as hawks rest upon air and

[28:24] air sustains them so would i learn to

[28:28] attain

[28:29] freefall and float into create a creator

[28:32] spirit's

[28:33] deep embrace knowing no effort earns

[28:37] that

[28:37] all surrounding grace

[28:42] these are difficult days a year ago

[28:46] no one could have predicted the

[28:48] challenges and losses we all face now

[28:51] loss upon loss hardship disappointment

[28:55] plans cancelled physical separation and

[28:57] sometimes

[28:58] even isolation sometimes illness

[29:01] hopefully recovery

[29:04] and although it all may be something big

[29:07] and beautiful that waits to be born

[29:09] maybe these contractions we feel

[29:12] are actually labor pains of the soul

[29:16] and our world is about to see something

[29:18] good be

[29:19] born and if not the world as a whole our

[29:22] own life

[29:23] at least so through it all may

[29:26] we learn to attain freefall and float

[29:30] into creator spirit's deep embrace

[29:33] knowing no effort earns that all

[29:36] surround

[29:36] surrounding grace even here

[29:41] in this apparently god forsaken barn

[29:44] that in truth hosts the very light of

[29:46] the world

[29:47] on this and every holy night

[29:50] even now and all surrounding

[29:54] grace god bless you

[29:57] and amen

[30:10] [Music]

[30:14] the stars are brightly shining

[30:19] it is the night of our

[30:22] dear savior's birth

[30:30] long lay the world

[30:34] in sin

[30:36] [Music]

[30:43] [Music]

[30:48] a thrill of hope

[30:51] the weary world rejoices

[30:56] for yonder breaks

[30:59] a new and glorious

[31:04] [Music]

[31:14] [Music]

[31:30] when christ was born

[31:33] [Music]

[31:43] [Music]

[31:59] divine

[32:02] [Music]

[34:14] truly taught us to love one another

[34:22] his lies love and his gospel is peace

[34:34] shall he break for the slave is our

[34:40] brother

[34:41] and in his name all oppression shall see

[34:50] sweet hymns of joy

[34:53] in grateful chorus praise we

[34:58] let all within us praise his holy name

[35:07] christ is the lord

[35:19] [Music]

[35:43] is

[35:46] [Music]

[36:17] [Music]

[36:25] so

[36:30] let us pray together

[36:34] like the weary family who gave birth in

[36:37] a time of trouble

[36:39] we too approach the manger looking for

[36:42] hope

[36:44] seeking a bright star to show us a way

[36:46] out

[36:48] looking for a sign that peace is coming

[36:52] justice is coming even

[36:55] in your most humble and wretched places

[36:59] so circle us holy one bring your bright

[37:03] presence into this world warm us with

[37:06] your unconditional and unbounded love

[37:10] like an infant who moves us with the

[37:13] twin wonders

[37:14] of vulnerability and joy

[37:18] entrust to our arms the care of all your

[37:22] children

[37:23] your planet all life

[37:28] holy mother source of all creation

[37:32] we kneel in the straw tonight and set

[37:35] down our burdens

[37:38] we offer up our worries for family

[37:40] members and loved ones who can't be

[37:42] together this season

[37:44] for health care workers retail workers

[37:49] civil servants and politicians who have

[37:51] been carrying the strain

[37:53] of providing nourishment care

[37:56] and tough decisions during this time

[38:01] we also clamor at your side to help

[38:04] us change ourselves and our society

[38:09] so no one will suffer under racism under

[38:12] oppression

[38:14] but instead enjoy the freedom that is

[38:16] all our birthrights as jesus

[38:18] told tonight we shed tears

[38:23] for our planet and all the creatures

[38:25] that cry out to us to deal with climate

[38:27] change

[38:29] to take action to ensure lives

[38:32] and diversity are preserved

[38:35] and we lay down to our own worries and

[38:38] sadness

[38:39] our own losses so that you may gather

[38:43] them up in your arms

[38:45] and make them your own gracious god

[38:49] who shows us the ordinary is

[38:52] extraordinary

[38:53] in the form of a child whose heart would

[38:56] not close itself

[38:57] to anyone circle the world

[39:01] with the joy of your salvation your

[39:04] blessing

[39:06] your promise that we will have and be

[39:08] enough

[39:10] and where there is sickness and disease

[39:13] bring healing where there is hunger and

[39:16] despair

[39:17] bring hope where there is torture

[39:20] and oppression bring freedom

[39:24] and transform us all into the hope

[39:28] that the world needs now in christ's

[39:32] name

[39:33] amen

[39:36] please join me in praying the prayer

[39:38] that jesus taught us

[39:41] our mother our father who art in heaven

[39:45] hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come

[39:49] thy will be done on earth as it is in

[39:52] heaven

[39:53] give us this day our daily bread and

[39:56] forgive us

[39:56] our trespasses as we forgive those who

[39:59] trespass against us

[40:02] and lead us not into temptation but

[40:04] deliver us from evil

[40:06] for thine is the kingdom the power and

[40:09] the glory

[40:11] forever and ever amen

[40:16] from the glamorous gifts offered by the

[40:18] three magi

[40:19] to the symbol gift offered by the

[40:22] shepherd boy

[40:23] in one of our favorite christmas carols

[40:26] we know

[40:26] in the season of christmas there is an

[40:29] offering

[40:30] of ourselves of our time of our talents

[40:35] of our resources and the gift in itself

[40:38] itself doesn't matter so much

[40:40] what matters is it comes from the heart

[40:43] it comes from trusting that god is good

[40:47] and a work in the world and in us

[40:50] so this christmas season if you can

[40:53] offer your gifts

[40:55] to organizations charities and

[40:56] nonprofits that are doing good work

[40:58] in the world do so if you can offer the

[41:02] gift of your listening ear and your

[41:03] compassionate heart to your neighbor

[41:06] to your family and to the stranger do so

[41:10] and of course here at st andrews wesley

[41:12] united

[41:13] when we receive your gifts we are able

[41:16] to do ministry

[41:17] that lights up the heart of this city

[41:21] so if you'd like to make an offering you

[41:23] may do so using

[41:24] our website pushpay text

[41:28] this qr code or even the old-fashioned

[41:31] mail

[41:32] we hope that you will give from your

[41:34] heart to all those you care about this

[41:37] season

[41:39] in this most unusual christmas we may

[41:42] not have

[41:43] the signs symbols and celebrations that

[41:46] we

[41:46] are used to and yet christmas

[41:50] is a state we can enter into no matter

[41:53] what

[41:54] from something humble to something

[41:56] glorious and grand

[41:58] there are signs of that miracle

[42:01] all around us right now for some of us

[42:05] that is tapping into some memories

[42:07] that we have of christmas eve and we

[42:10] want to share this piece of writing that

[42:12] was in our advent calendar

[42:14] about christmas eve

[42:20] lit from the same flame are held up

[42:24] in the darkness each year i think i will

[42:28] sing

[42:30] each year i'm overwhelmed

[42:33] tears streaming down my face and it's

[42:36] all

[42:36] that i can do to listen in awe

[42:41] silent nights holy night

[42:45] this hymn has the gentleness of a

[42:47] lullaby

[42:48] or a lover's reassuring touch

[42:51] this is mystery a moment

[42:55] made right all of the noise

[42:58] of the holiday season falls away

[43:02] it's a moment of pure belief

[43:05] shepherds quake at the sight glory

[43:08] stream

[43:09] from heaven afar belief

[43:12] in what we may not be sure

[43:16] but it's enough to be here and to be

[43:19] together

[43:21] the candles glow our singing

[43:24] and listening are smiling and weeping

[43:28] all are one heavenly hosts

[43:32] sing alleluia christ the savior

[43:37] is here

[43:46] [Music]

[43:53] so

[43:54] [Music]

[44:03] [Music]

[44:21] is

[44:26] [Music]

[44:35] oh

[44:39] [Music]

[44:49] peace

[44:53] [Music]

[45:17] oh

[45:22] [Music]

[45:32] [Applause]

[45:32] [Music]

[45:45] clear

[45:53] [Music]

[45:59] peace

[46:00] [Music]

[46:08] [Applause]

[46:10] [Music]

[46:13] peace

[46:15] [Music]

[46:35] [Music]

[46:41] is

[46:44] [Music]

[46:56] [Music]

[47:09] is

[47:22] this is a challenging christmas a

[47:24] strange and unusual and difficult

[47:27] christmas and so i'd like you to invite

[47:29] you to do two things

[47:30] to offer an extraordinary kindness

[47:34] to yourself do something for yourself

[47:37] that would bring you some happiness that

[47:39] you wouldn't usually do

[47:41] and then second offer an extraordinary

[47:44] kindness

[47:44] to somebody else with a word a a gift

[47:48] a gesture extend yourself

[47:52] to for for the well-being of another

[47:55] and as we do that as we extend kindness

[47:58] towards ourself and others

[47:59] we open ourselves up to that

[48:02] all-surrounding grace

[48:04] and so here we are even now in the

[48:07] silence

[48:08] of this holy night still blessed by the

[48:12] love of god

[48:13] the peace of christ and the surprising

[48:16] joy

[48:16] of the holy spirit that made even the

[48:19] angels sing

[48:20] glory hallelujah amen

[48:25] merry christmas

[48:34] [Music]

[49:15] do

[49:18] [Music]

[49:43] hmm

[49:46] [Music]

[50:00] you

The service distinguishes between resignation and trust. Mary didn't know the future, but she said yes actively, moving into it. Faith in uncertainty means continuing to act, care, and engage—but from a stance of trust rather than the illusion of control. You make decisions and show up, but you hold your plans lightly, ready to adapt.
Mary is asked to accept something completely outside her control—an impossible pregnancy—without any guarantee of how it will work out. Her response, 'Let it be with me according to your word,' shows how to surrender to forces larger than ourselves while still maintaining agency and dignity. She doesn't understand, but she trusts anyway.
According to the sermon, the question isn't 'Where was the angel?' when disaster strikes. The question is whether you can, like Mary, learn to say yes to the life you're actually living rather than the one you planned. This doesn't mean you stop caring about outcomes—it means you release your grip on trying to control them.
In this service, lighting candles is not about creating certainty—it's about making a gesture of faith toward grace. You light a candle not because you know it will solve anything, but because the act itself is a declaration: I still believe, I still hope, I still say yes to life even in darkness.
No. The service draws a distinction: blind hope ignores reality; faith acknowledges reality while choosing to keep trusting anyway. The magazine from 2019 couldn't predict COVID—a fact the sermon uses not to dismiss planning, but to show that some things are genuinely beyond our control, and that's where faith begins.
The service emphasizes community and honesty. By gathering together, acknowledging what we don't know, and naming both what is wrong (injustice, loss) and what is sacred, we create space for genuine faith to emerge. Open-heartedness comes not from denying difficulty but from facing it with others.
