The Three Officers at the Gate: Food as Portal

In 1987, speaking at Lynchburg College in Virginia, Swami Satchidananda opened a talk on diet and health with an image that has haunted spiritual inquiry for generations: the three Chinese monkeys—See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil—the figurines Mahatma Gandhi kept always on his desk. But Satchidananda was not invoking them as a call to ignorance. He was invoking them as a lesson in discernment, a teaching about the gatekeepers we carry within our own body.

The core of his teaching rests on a single, irreducible claim: "You are what you eat." But before naming this as biological truth, he built an architecture around it—one that transforms eating from mere consumption into an act of consciousness, a moment when the body exercises its right to say no.

The Body's Three Inspectors

Satchidananda offered a teaching that reimagines the digestive system not as a passive tube but as a border crossing, staffed by three officers whose job is to protect the sovereignty of the country—your body.

The first officer is the eye. "When your eye wants to see something, immediately question the eye," he instructed. What are you about to take in? Is it rated X? Is it compromised? The eye sees from a distance; it has time to evaluate. This is the first checkpoint.

Then comes the second officer: the nose, positioned, as he noted with a teacher's precision, directly over the mouth. "God could have kept it right here," he said, gesturing to suggest the nose could have been placed elsewhere. Instead, its anatomical placement serves a purpose—you cannot eat without passing the olfactory test. Smell is the second inspection. This officer reports: does it sound good? Does it taste good?

Finally, there is the chief officer—the digestive system itself, the ultimate arbiter of what the body will accept. You pass all three officers, and only then do you swallow. "They all immigration officers," Satchidananda said. "Anything that goes into the country should be checked by this."

How We Cheat the Guards

But here is where the teaching darkens, where it becomes urgent: we have learned to deceive the inspectors. We are, he said plainly, "very clever in cheating the officers."

If food looks a little dirty, we color it. If it tastes a little mediocre, we add sugar. The result is visible everywhere: colored apples, waxed apples, painted carrots. These are not innocent cosmetics. They are acts of self-deception, moments when we override the body's built-in wisdom in service of appetite or convenience.

"You can cheat all these people," Satchidananda explained, "but not ultimately the big officer here." That chief officer, the immune system and the deeper digestive intelligence, will eventually recognize the fraud. And when it does, the response is decisive: "I don't need you. Excuse me. He won't hesitate to throw you out of the country." This is disease, malfunction, the body's rebellion against the mind's dishonesty.

Food as a Measure of Consciousness

The teaching moves beyond nutrition into metaphysics. Most of our physical problems, he stated, are caused by our food. But food is not merely material—it is an index of consciousness. What we eat reveals what we are willing to accept into ourselves. It is an act of permission repeated three times a day.

The invocation of Gandhi's three monkeys at the opening was no accident. They teach selective perception—not blindness, but discernment. Applied to food, they become a practice: see clearly, smell truthfully, taste honestly. This is not asceticism. This is self-respect.

The metaphor of immigration officers, of borders and gatekeeping, also carries weight in an age of boundary erosion. The body is a country. The mouth is a port of entry. The three senses are customs agents. And we, the inhabitants of this country, have been sleeping at the desk while contraband floods in.

Where to go from here

To take Satchidananda's teaching seriously is to begin, simply, to pause before eating. Not to restrict, necessarily, but to engage the three inspectors—to look, to smell, to taste—before committing to swallow. It is to ask: what am I really about to take in? And to listen for the answer, not from appetite, but from the body's own wisdom, the officers at the gate.

According to the teaching, you literally become the nutritional and energetic content of what you consume. Most physical health problems originate from the food we eat, making diet not just a matter of calories but of spiritual and bodily integrity.
The eyes inspect from a distance, the nose confirms safety up close, and the digestive system makes the final decision. Together they function as immigration officers, checking everything that enters the body—but we often override their wisdom with coloring, sweetening, and other tricks.
The body is a country that should be protected by its own border officers—your senses. When we cheat those officers by eating artificially colored or sweetened foods, we eventually face consequences from the chief officer, the digestive system, which will reject what it recognizes as contraband.
Yes—through illness, immune response, and digestive rejection. When the body recognizes it has been deceived by foods that looked good but were compromised, it initiates removal, which manifests as physical problems that many mistake for disease rather than the body's self-protective intelligence.
The talk emphasizes a clean, vegetarian diet for optimal health and physical well-being, though the core principle—conscious, honest eating that passes the body's three inspectors—applies to any food choice made with awareness rather than deception.
The three monkeys teach discernment, not ignorance. Applied to eating, they remind us to see clearly, hear the body's signals, and speak truthfully about what we're consuming—to use our senses as tools of protection, not avoidance.
