Who Are We Right Here, Right Now? Identity and Presence

Be Here Now Network
Be Here Now Network
Aug 27, 2025
読了 約7分

This talk addresses the fundamental spiritual question: Who are we beyond our thoughts, roles, and identities? The core inquiry explores what it means to be fully present and conscious in the here and now, moving beyond the conditioned self to touch something more essential and aware. The question "Who are we right here, right now?" opens a gateway to understanding our true nature by examining what remains constant through all experience.

What Is the Core Question of Identity?

The question "Who are we right here, right now?" is not merely philosophical—it is a direct pointing toward an essential spiritual investigation. Rather than accepting our habitual sense of self—the collection of roles, memories, beliefs, and personality traits we've accumulated—this inquiry asks us to look directly at what is present in this very moment. It's a question that has anchored contemplative traditions for millennia, yet it remains radically immediate and personal for each seeker.

This question operates on multiple levels. On the surface, it invites us to notice what we're experiencing in the body and senses right now. At a deeper level, it points to the awareness itself—the consciousness that is aware of all experience. And at the deepest level, it asks about the nature of the self that witnesses even that awareness. Rather than arriving at a fixed answer, the inquiry itself becomes a practice of direct seeing.

How Does Consciousness Relate to Our Sense of Self?

In contemplative understanding, there's a distinction between consciousness (the aware capacity that is always present) and the objects of consciousness (thoughts, sensations, emotions, perceptions). Most of us identify with the content of consciousness—we say "I am anxious" or "I am tired" or "I am a teacher/parent/artist." But what if we look at the awareness that is aware of these states?

When you notice anxiety, something in you is aware that anxiety is present. That awareness is not itself anxious. When you observe tiredness, something in you is noticing tiredness without being tired in the same way. This observation points to a quality of consciousness that exists independent of its content. In this moment, right now, that awareness is fully present and functioning. The question becomes: Is that awareness your true nature, or is there something beyond even that?

This is not intellectual speculation. It's an invitation to direct investigation. By turning attention toward the quality of awareness itself—not as an object to be grasped, but as the very ground of your experiencing—you may discover something that doesn't come and go with your thoughts and moods.

What Does It Mean to Be Here Now?

"Here" refers not only to physical location but to presence itself. Right now, reading these words, you are in a specific location. But "here" also points to the immediacy of the present moment, stripped of the overlay of past and future. "Now" is the only time that actually exists—the past is memory, the future is projection, and the present moment is the only living reality.

To be here now means to inhabit this moment more fully, to reduce the gap between your actual experience and your awareness of it. Most of the time, we're either lost in memory (regret, nostalgia, learned patterns) or caught in imagination (planning, anxiety, desire). The present moment is constantly available, yet we miss it by leaving our attention elsewhere.

When the inquiry asks "Who are we right here, right now?" it's asking you to actually be here, not somewhere else mentally. What do you find when you stop the incessant movement of the mind toward past and future? What is the quality of your presence when you're fully attending to what is actually happening rather than what you think about what's happening?

Beyond Identity: What Remains When You Let Go of Your Story?

We typically construct identity through narratives—stories about who we are, what we've done, what we want, what we fear. These narratives are built from family conditioning, cultural imprinting, traumatic memory, aspirations, and adopted beliefs. The personal self is real and useful for navigating the world, yet it is not the totality of who we are.

Spiritual investigation invites us to ask: What happens when you release attachment to these narratives, even temporarily? Not through denial or suppression, but through conscious investigation. If you set aside the story of being "the kind of person who..." or "someone who was raised to..." or "I've always been someone who...", what's left?

Often what remains is not a void but a spaciousness, a quality of presence that is less defended, less separate. Some describe it as peace. Others notice an openness, a receptivity. Some find an aware emptiness. What's significant is that whatever is discovered does not depend on your personal history. It's not built from past experience; it's prior to experience. It's the space in which experience occurs.

This doesn't mean denying or transcending your human personality. Rather, it means not exclusively identifying with personality as the totality of what you are. You can have a personality while simultaneously resting in awareness that is not personal. You can live out your conditioned patterns while increasingly disidentifying from them as your true self.

How Does This Inquiry Shift Our Experience of the Present?

When you genuinely ask "Who am I right here, right now?" something shifts in attention. The question has a particular quality—it's not looking for the answer in thought. It's a pointing that awakens direct seeing. You might notice the quality of awareness becoming more obvious. You might sense space where previously you felt only density. You might experience a subtle relaxation as the tight loop of self-preoccupation loosens.

This inquiry also democratizes spiritual realization. You don't need special circumstances or years of practice. Right here, in whatever situation you find yourself, you can investigate. In this moment, as you read, consciousness is operating. Whatever you're experiencing—pleasant, unpleasant, neutral—awareness of it is present. That awareness is your true nature operating right now.

The implications are radical: If your essential nature is this aware presence, then you are already complete in this moment. You are not broken and need not be fixed. You are not insufficient and need not accumulate something to become whole. The seeking itself can relax into being.

What Is the Practical Value of This Question?

This inquiry is not merely contemplative—it has direct practical effects. When you remember your true nature as aware presence rather than identifying solely with the small self, your relationship to suffering changes. Pain (physical or emotional) is still present, but you are not entirely contained within it. There's space around it. There's awareness of it that is not suffering in the same way.

Similarly, when an emotion arises—anger, shame, fear—and you can recognize it as an object arising in awareness rather than as the totality of what you are, a different possibility opens. You can hold emotional experience with compassion rather than being overwhelmed by it or trying to suppress it.

This also shifts your relationship to others. When you rest increasingly in awareness rather than in the contracted personal self, you recognize that same awareness operating through everyone. The boundaries between self and other become more permeable. Natural compassion and connection emerge, not as an achievement, but as the recognition of what was always true.

Where to Go From Here

The question "Who are we right here, right now?" is not meant to be answered once and settled. It's a living inquiry that deepens over time. You might investigate it through meditation, by sitting quietly and turning attention toward the quality of awareness itself. You might inquire in daily life—pausing to notice what is present beyond thought, beyond identity, beyond the usual sense of self.

The investigation also naturally opens to other questions: What is the relationship between this awareness and your body? What is the relationship between your awareness and the awareness in others? Does investigating this question reveal something about the nature of consciousness itself, beyond the individual? These explorations can continue unfolding across a lifetime of practice.

The invitation is simple: Stop for a moment. Release the momentum of thinking about who you are. Notice what is actually present right here, right now. Be curious about the aware presence that is aware of whatever you notice. This is not a belief system to adopt; it's direct seeing available in this very moment, regardless of your background, experience, or attainment.

Consciousness is the aware capacity that witnesses all experience—thoughts, emotions, sensations—while remaining unchanged by them. Identity is typically the story we construct about ourselves based on roles, memories, and conditioning. The inquiry points toward recognizing consciousness as your primary nature rather than identifying solely with the constructed personal self.
Being here now involves reducing the mental distance between your actual experience and your awareness of it. You can practice by pausing regularly to notice what you're sensing right now—sounds, sensations, breath—without interpreting or judging. This direct contact with immediate experience anchors you in the present moment rather than in thoughts about past or future.
Letting go of identification with your constructed identity doesn't erase your personality or ability to function. Rather, it reveals a spacious awareness beneath personal narrative—a presence that is not dependent on your history or circumstances. You can still navigate life effectively while recognizing you are not limited to the small personal self.
Yes. Your true nature as aware presence is operating right now, regardless of experience or attainment. You can investigate directly by pausing and noticing the quality of awareness that is aware of whatever you're experiencing. No special preparation is required—only a willingness to turn attention toward presence itself.
When you recognize yourself primarily as aware presence rather than as your emotions, emotional pain becomes something that arises in awareness rather than the totality of what you are. There's space around the emotion. This doesn't eliminate the feeling, but it reduces identification with it, making emotional experiences more workable and less overwhelming.
This inquiry is not about becoming different or achieving a spiritual status. It's about recognizing what is already true about your nature—that you are already aware presence. The question points not toward improvement or attainment, but toward seeing directly what you already are beneath the layers of conditioning.
If you cannot find it, begin by noticing what is easy to verify: You are aware of something right now—sensations, sounds, thoughts. Whatever you're aware of, there is an awareness of it. That awareness itself is what the inquiry points toward. It may not feel dramatic or special, but it is the ground of all your experience.
Resting increasingly in awareness rather than in the contracted personal self naturally shifts how you relate to others and to life. Emotional reactivity softens, compassion emerges more naturally, and you recognize the same awareness operating through all beings. This doesn't require changing your external life—it's a shift in how you inhabit it.
