Real Mermaid Training: HowProfessional Mermaids Work Underwater

Sky Cowans

読了 約8分

Professional mermaids are skilled underwater performers who combine freediving, scuba certification, and rigorous physical training to create immersive entertainment experiences. Unlike recreational mermaids, professionals get paid to perform, maintain visible public personalities, and bring ocean conservation messaging to audiences—particularly children. The role demands surprising physical stamina: tails weigh up to 38 pounds, cause cramping and pain, and require years of ankle and core conditioning. Mermaids use meditation, breathwork, and emotional resilience to manage both the discomfort of the costume and the intensity of children's reactions. Their work is rooted in mythology, spiritual practice, and a commitment to helping humans reconnect with the ocean's wonder.

What Is a Professional Mermaid?

Quinn Quintessence, a professional mermaid who has made a career of bringing the fantasy to life, defines the role with precision: it is not simply wearing a tail in water. According to Quinn, being a mermaid means "bringing everybody's imagination to life" and becoming "a mythical creature brought to reality" designed to make people happy. For Quinn, this work emerged unexpectedly. She had been a nanny for years before being scouted by another mermaid company after posting fabric-tail photos in the mermaid community on Instagram. When asked if she wanted to "go all the way with it," she initially thought it was a joke—but witnessing how this art form could connect with children changed her entire perspective.

The difference between recreational and professional mermaids is straightforward: money, visibility, and skill. Professional mermaids are hired for specific gigs—parties, events, public appearances—and must maintain a recognizable persona or "mer-sona." They carry certifications in lifeguarding, freediving, and scuba diving. They develop signature character traits, backstories, and lore to answer the inevitable flood of questions children ask when they encounter a mermaid in person. For Quinn, this meant becoming a "betta fish mermaid," identifying with the flowing, graceful movement of betta fish rather than the traditional Ariel archetype.

The Hidden Physical Demands of Wearing a Mermaid Tail

One of the most striking realities Quinn shares is that mermaid work looks magical but feels grueling. Tales are beautiful, but they are painful. Quinn is direct about this: "Oftentimes we'll be being told how easy and ethereal our job is while we're in the pool with a Charlie horse and a toe cramp. We're smiling through the pain, 'cause that's what we're trying to do."

The physical requirements are non-negotiable. Quinn's favorite tail—a full betta-fish tail from Mermaid Amethia—weighs 38 pounds and creates such a heavy flick that when she uses it, the tail stands straight up in the water. The sustained ankle strength required is immense. Professional mermaids must condition their ankles the way gymnasts condition theirs. They also navigate bathroom management: wearing a sealed tail means no bathroom breaks, requiring careful fluid intake and timing before performances.

Beyond the tail itself, mermaids also deal with exhaustion, the need to maintain composure in public, and the challenge of executing complex underwater movements on demand. "Sometimes you're tired, or you know, you need to go to the bathroom, and you just gotta kind of work through all of those things," Quinn explains. Yet the work continues—because children are watching, and the magic must be preserved.

Mermaid Bootcamp: The Training Process

When Sky Cowans, the host, agreed to spend 24 hours in mermaid training, Quinn took her through a structured bootcamp designed to teach the fundamentals. The first lessons were humbling. Sky admitted, "I'm not the best swimmer. And I don't know how to open my eyes underwater." Quinn's response was matter-of-fact: "Well you're definitely gonna learn today."

The physical demands became apparent immediately. After just five minutes in the tail, Sky struggled with ankle pain: "Holy macaroni, my ankles feel like they're gonna break in this thing." Quinn responded with practiced empathy, explaining that the ankle conditioning comes through consistent practice—you develop the strength over time, not overnight.

In the pool, Quinn coached Sky through increasingly difficult maneuvers. Early attempts at flips and underwater tricks triggered anxiety. When Sky expressed doubt, asking "How am I supposed to do a flip?", Quinn introduced breathwork and meditation. "Mermaids are all about cheery and happy, positive attitudes," Quinn said, but she also acknowledged the emotional reality: "I used to cry after every gig for the first one." She explained that different performance levels exist, and that breathing exercises and body awareness can help ease the transition.

Quinn referenced her own training regimen, which includes meditation, yoga, fitness, and even sound healing. These practices aren't luxuries—they're necessary tools for managing both the physical strain and the mental/emotional intensity of the work. The underwater training focused on breath control, body positioning, and the specific ankle movements required for the tail flick.

Why Mermaids Matter: Ocean Conservation and Childhood Wonder

Quinn's deeper motivation for her mermaid work extends beyond entertainment. "To me, mermaids represent mysticism and magic," she says. "They represent ocean safety and conservation, a deity or mascot of the sea that can help people realize how important it is to protect our oceans, protect our earth and thus doing so protecting ourselves." This philosophy infuses her character work: she uses her platform to instill environmental consciousness in children while also giving them a tangible, joyful memory of magic.

Quinn is also deeply spiritual. In her home, she maintains an altar with crystals, sage, oracle cards, and a space for meditation. She describes herself as a spiritualist and uses these spiritual practices to center herself before performances and to manage anxiety. The meditation practice, she explains, clears her anxiety, focuses her, and centers her in the present moment—all critical for the emotional labor of staying "on" while interacting with excited, questioning children.

Her connection to children is intentional and profound. "I relate to kids way more than I relate to most adults," Quinn says. "They are looking for the good in things. They have the ability to learn and adapt. They question everything. And that's like what I'm all about as a person." This isn't nostalgia or whimsy—it's a genuine philosophical stance that informs her career choice and her approach to the mermaid role.

What About Halle Bailey's Ariel? A Professional Mermaid's Perspective

During the video, Sky and Quinn discuss Disney's 2023 live-action adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," starring Halle Bailey as Ariel. Quinn's perspective is nuanced and rooted in both representation and storytelling depth. When shown reaction videos of Black children seeing Ariel on screen for the first time—children crying and saying "She's like me"—Quinn's emotional response is clear: "Oh my God, my heart just explodes when I see those videos." For Quinn, these moments of representation matter deeply.

However, Quinn also expresses a more complicated wish about the film. She connects more personally with "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea," which features Melody, Ariel's daughter, as the protagonist. Quinn states, "One of the most impactful things in my life is that you can truly be whatever you want to be." She also notes, "Personally, I wish that we could have seen a unique story" rather than a live-action remake, and she advocates for "more black mermaids on the screen for sure." Her perspective balances celebration of representation with a desire for original narratives that feature diverse mermaid characters from the start.

The Beach Challenge: Convincing Children of Mermaid Reality

The final test of Sky's training was a beach encounter designed to test her ability to stay in character and manage spontaneous interactions with real children. Quinn brought Sky to a beach populated with families and kids, and the moment of truth arrived: Could Sky convince children that she was a real mermaid?

The children's reactions ranged from awe to skepticism to pure wonder. Some asked practical questions: "What kind of food do you eat?" Others were more concerned with logistics: "How do you go to the bathroom?" (A question professional mermaids hear constantly.) The children also expressed environmental curiosity, asking about ocean life and what mermaids do in the ocean.

What became clear is that children engage mermaids not with cynicism but with genuine openness. They accept the premise if the performer is committed to it. By the end of the encounter, children had decided on a name for Sky's mermaid persona—"Starla Starfish"—anchoring her in their imagination and making her real in the way that matters most: as a character who inspired joy and wonder.

Sky's final observation underscored the transformative power of the experience: "the adventure continues," suggesting that the 24-hour immersion had shifted something in her understanding of what it means to embody a mythical role and use it to connect with others.

Where to Go From Here

If you're intrigued by the mermaid profession, Quinn offers several pathways. She is available to book for parties and events through Sheros Entertainment (sheroesentertainment.com/mermaids). Her Instagram (@quintessencethemermaid) showcases her work and persona. For those interested in spiritual practices, meditation, and embodied performance, Quinn's approach—combining yoga, sound healing, meditation, and breathwork with physical skill training—offers a model for preparation.

The broader lesson from Quinn's work is that professional fantasy roles require genuine skill, emotional intelligence, and physical discipline. Whether you're drawn to mermaids specifically or to any form of immersive performance art, the principles are consistent: train your body, develop your character, root yourself in a larger purpose (in Quinn's case, ocean conservation and wonder), and approach your audience—especially children—with authentic presence and respect.

[0:33] Today I am going to live this childhood dream

[0:35] because Quinn is going to show me

[0:37] the way of the water and the way of the merpeople.

[0:40] And this is very exciting

[0:42] because there is a new live action "Little Mermaid"

[0:44] coming out from Disney and this is a big deal.

[0:47] It's been talked about for months and months

[0:49] since they announced the release

[0:50] and there's so much discussion around it.

[0:52] We're gonna have a fin-tastic day

[0:55] and I'm sure we will have quite the tail to tell.

[1:02] That's very meremaidy.

[1:03] So many thing-a-mabobs and whosits and whatsits galore.

[1:06] Sunscreen, earplugs, makeup bag.

[1:09] A jug of water.

[1:10] All right, time to meet the mermaid.

[1:12] (door knocking)

[1:15] - Hi! - Hi!

[1:16] - Come on in, nice to meet you.

[1:44] - It's not here right now.

[1:46] My favorite is my full betta tail from Mermaid Amethia.

[1:49] I identify as like a betta fish mermaid.

[1:51] - [Sky] What is a betta fish mermaid?

[1:53] - The little betta fish that swim in the little bowls?

[1:55] Yeah, that's me.

[1:56] - Was it always something you felt drawn to

[1:58] as a little girl or did it come later in your life?

[2:01] - No, actually, fairies were kind of my thing

[2:03] when I was growing up.

[2:04] - Fairies? - [Quinn] Yeah.

[2:05] - We also met a fairy.

[2:07] - Oh, did you? - [Sky] Yeah.

[2:09] - I fell into the mermaid stuff.

[2:10] This is not something I anticipated at all

[2:14] but here I am and I love it.

[2:16] - This table is incredible.

[2:18] What has inspired you becoming a mermaid?

[2:21] - I've been a nanny for years.

[2:22] The element that involved kids,

[2:24] that made me wanna get into this.

[2:25] I enjoyed being in the water,

[2:26] but we were actually scouted by another mermaid company

[2:28] that was looking for new professional mermaids.

[2:31] And we had been posting on Instagram

[2:33] wearing our fabric tales and like playing around essentially

[2:35] in the mermaid community.

[2:36] And she was like, do you guys wanna do this?

[2:38] Do you wanna go all the way with it?

[2:39] I thought it was a joke at first.

[2:40] I was like, what's a professional mermaid?

[2:42] What do you mean?

[2:43] But when I saw the way you could connect with kids

[2:45] through this art form,

[2:46] it changed my entire perspective of everything.

[2:48] - So what is the difference between

[2:49] being a recreational mermaid and being a professional?

[2:53] - The money. We get paid to perform.

[2:56] We get paid to be visible in the public eye,

[2:58] be a personality, have underwater skill sets.

[3:01] I'm lifeguard, freedive and scuba certified.

[3:03] We get all kinds of gig work.

[3:04] It's not easy by any means.

[3:06] Tales are beautiful, but they are painful.

[3:08] You know, oftentimes we'll be being told how easy

[3:11] and ethereal our job is while we're in the pool

[3:13] with a Charlie horse and a toe cramp.

[3:15] We're smiling through the pain,

[3:16] 'cause that's what we're trying to do.

[3:17] Sometimes you're tired, or you know,

[3:19] you need to go to the bathroom,

[3:20] and you just gotta kind of work through all of those things.

[3:23] - Right, because when you have the tail on,

[3:25] you probably can't use the bathroom.

[3:27] - No.

[3:28] - Do you ever pee your pants in a tail?

[3:29] - I never do.

[3:30] I pride my babies too much for that.

[3:32] - I need to make sure that I pee

[3:33] before I put the tail on today.

[3:35] - Absolutely, 100%. - Yeah.

[3:36] - To me, mermaids represent mysticism and magic.

[3:40] They represent ocean safety and conservation,

[3:43] a deity or mascot of the sea (conch blowing)

[3:45] that can help people realize how important it is

[3:48] to protect our oceans, protect our earth

[3:50] and thus doing so protecting ourselves.

[3:54] - So I see you have some kind of altar here.

[3:57] - Yep. This is my altar.

[3:59] I am a spiritualist.

[4:00] I use this space for my crystals, for my sage,

[4:04] for my oracle cards, space for meditating.

[4:06] - Whoa, this crystal ball is so epic.

[4:10] - When I need to, I'll just like put on my meditation music

[4:12] and just sit and stare.

[4:13] And it is very cleansing.

[4:16] It clears my anxiety, focuses me, centers me in the now.

[4:19] - You know, if you were looking at this

[4:20] for a long, long time, it would be kind of trippy.

[4:24] - [Quinn] Yeah, absolutely. (both laughing)

[4:28] - How many stuffed animals do you have?

[4:30] - [Quinn] A bunch. - Hundreds.

[4:32] You just wanna get up in there and like cuddle up in there.

[4:35] - [Quinn] Go on.

[4:36] - It's like a ball pit full of stuffed animals.

[4:39] Oh, this is so cool. I'm so cuddly.

[4:42] - You know, a little cuddle pile of love.

[4:43] - Cuddle pile of love.

[4:45] - I mean, I relate to kids way more

[4:47] than I relate to most adults.

[4:49] They are looking for the good in things.

[4:51] They have the ability to learn and adapt.

[4:53] They question everything.

[4:55] And that's like what I'm all about as a person.

[4:57] Working with kids is a huge part of what I do.

[4:59] - What is the reaction you typically get

[5:02] when you show up as a mermaid

[5:03] and the kids see you for the first time?

[5:06] - (imitating screaming) And then they run the other way.

[5:08] When people see me as a mermaid,

[5:09] there are normally some pretty extreme reactions.

[5:11] You get everything to kids freaking out

[5:15] and running towards me to them freaking out

[5:17] and running in the other direction.

[5:18] When they see me, they are so excited

[5:20] and they have a million questions.

[5:22] Professional mermaids basically make up

[5:23] their own mermaid lore for their mer-sona.

[5:25] Making sure that I have all of my bases covered

[5:28] for when people see me and give me those reactions,

[5:30] because normally the questions start coming

[5:33] the moment they see me.

[5:35] - Have you seen any of those reaction videos

[5:38] of little girls seeing the new Ariel?

[5:40] - I have, yeah.

[5:42] - [Kid] Why can't we see her face?

[5:43] - [Cameraman] They're about to show it, keep watching.

[9:45] Maybe I'll do it in the shallow end.

[9:51] I don't know how to do it.

[9:52] I feel like a child.

[9:53] I don't think I'm a good mermaid.

[9:57] - No, you got this.

[9:59] You gotta believe in yourself.

[10:01] - Will you rescue me if I sink?

[10:02] - I will, yeah.

[10:03] Mermaids are all about cheery and happy, positive attitudes.

[10:07] - Okay, I'll try. (dramatic music)

[10:15] I can't do.

[10:17] It just feels so uncomfortable

[10:19] and unnatural in this tail.

[10:20] My ankles are, ugh.

[10:23] - You did go from zero to a hundred.

[10:24] - It's not weird that I'm having a hard time with this?

[10:27] - No, most people start with a fabric tail.

[10:29] - How do you do it?

[10:30] - I'm probably using a bit more core than you are.

[10:32] So I don't feel it all just in my ankle.

[10:34] - Okay, this is easier if I go into the core.

[10:38] Oh yes.

[10:40] I have a whole new level of respect.

[10:43] How many years has this taken you?

[10:44] - I have been mermaiding for eight years now.

[10:48] - Wow.

[10:48] - I used to cry after every gig for the first one.

[10:50] - Cry? - Yeah, yeah.

[10:51] - That makes you feel better that I'm struggling.

[10:53] Mermaiding is not easy at all.

[10:56] - No - Before you were like,

[10:58] "Oh it's like, it's not easy."

[11:00] It's hard.

[11:02] - I don't like to say that not everybody can be a mermaid.

[11:04] Everybody can be a mermaid. - Uh-huh.

[11:05] - But there are different levels

[11:06] to what that means to one person.

[11:08] - No, not anybody could do this.

[11:09] I could never show up at a birthday party

[11:11] and be a mermaid in this state.

[11:13] I'd be like, "Hi kids, I'm drowning.

[11:16] - You just do it and look beautiful doing it.

[11:17] And then you complain later when kids aren't watching.

[11:20] - I'm not good at holding my breath underwater,

[11:22] but I think that if we did breath work, it would help.

[11:24] 'cause I do a lot of breath work

[11:26] and then that helps with the breath holding.

[11:28] - Slow your heart rate. - Yeah.

[11:30] - Slow your breathing, focus you down.

[11:32] The faster your heart's beating

[11:34] and the more that you're thinking about it,

[11:35] the less you're able to hold your breath.

[11:37] - Okay.

[11:38] Quinn had me take some deep breaths to relax my body,

[11:41] and slow down my heart rate,

[11:43] and since we are talking about

[11:44] one of my favorite things, breath work,

[11:46] this is the perfect time to mention

[11:48] the sponsor of today's video, Open.

[11:51] Open is a breath work meditation and movement app

[11:54] that I use for my daily mindfulness practice.

[11:57] It has a huge library of guided breath work,

[12:00] meditation, yoga, fitness, and even sound healing.

[12:04] What I love about Open is that I can find

[12:06] whatever type of practice I'm looking for,

[12:08] for whatever length of time I have,

[12:11] whether it's three minutes or an hour.

[12:13] The classes are immersive and cinematic

[12:15] and really transport me into presence.

[12:18] So if you want to try Open for 30 days free

[12:21] and one free in-person class at their new studio in LA,

[12:25] use my link in the video description.

[12:27] Doing some gentle breath work really helps me relax my mind

[12:30] and body in the pool.

[12:31] And I finally started getting the hang of being a mermaid.

[12:35] (relaxed music)

[12:50] I'm getting the hang of it.

[12:52] You feeling it now?

[12:53] - Yeah, I feel it.

[12:54] I feel this fluid flowiness with the tail now.

[12:58] Oh, I just feel more relaxed.

[12:59] - [Quinn] Humans are taught to kick the water.

[13:01] When you're a mermaid,

[13:02] you're swimming in between the streams.

[13:03] - Maybe I am a mermaid after all.

[13:06] - The final mermaid test, if you're up for the challenge,

[13:09] is the brick test.

[13:11] Every good lifeguard takes the brick test.

[13:13] I consider you a completely water safe certified mermaid

[13:17] if you can go to the bottom of the pool,

[13:18] grab this brick and swim it back

[13:20] to the other end of the pool.

[13:21] - Oh goodness.

[13:23] I just started,

[13:24] I don't know if I'm gonna be able to do that.

[13:27] Woo, that's heavy.

[13:29] I can barely swim in the tail.

[13:30] - A human would be heavier. - Oh goodness.

[13:33] In "The Little Mermaid," Ariel saves Prince Eric.

[13:36] Have you ever saved a prince?

[13:37] - I've never saved a prince. - Maybe one day.

[13:40] - If you're a prince out there and you need rescuing,

[13:42] my shell phone number's available.

[13:44] (both laughing)

[13:44] - Maybe we can start in the shallow end

[13:46] just so I can try to like even just pick it up.

[13:49] - Yeah, sure.

[13:56] (Sky struggling) (Quinn laughing)

[13:58] - Jesus Christ, it's so heavy.

[14:00] We're gonna keep practicing in the shallow end.

[14:03] (dramatic music)

[14:15] (Sky struggling)

[14:21] I don't know this is gonna be possible.

[14:22] How long does it take mermaids normally to learn this?

[14:26] - This is one of the final parts of the lifeguard exam

[14:29] - That makes me feel better that I'm failing this

[14:30] - This is supposed be representative

[14:32] of you being able to save a life.

[14:34] - This is like my first day as a mermaid,

[14:37] so I don't know if I'm up for the challenge.

[14:45] - There you go, there you go, there you go.

[14:50] There you go!

[14:51] So we're gonna try this in the middle of the pool.

[14:54] If you can grab that brick

[14:55] and bring it to the edge of the pool, 10 points.

[14:59] You got this fish, be brave. - Okay.

[15:02] (dramatic music) (water splashing)

[15:13] (both cheering) (triumphant music)

[15:15] I did it!

[15:16] - That happened.

[15:18] - I didn't think I could do it.

[15:19] - She's trained, she's taught, she's ready to evolve.

[15:22] (dreamy music)

[15:33] - Now the question becomes, how do I get this thing off?

[15:43] (Sky singing)

[15:47] I'm free!

[15:49] My hands are so pruny. - [Quinn] Yeah.

[15:52] - Is it like that after every gig?

[15:54] - For the most part, yeah.

[15:55] - I think after experiencing just the taste of mermaiding,

[15:58] I think it should be a high paying job.

[16:02] (Quinn laughing) For real.

[16:03] - I think the hardest lesson that mermaiding has taught me

[16:05] in my life is that you can truly be whatever you want to be

[16:09] and you can still make a living out of it

[16:11] and still, you know, live your best life

[16:13] and make dreams come true.

[16:14] - Did you like the movie "The Little Mermaid"

[16:17] when you were growing up?

[16:18] - I dunno if I did.

[16:20] I really liked "The Little Mermaid 2."

[16:21] I know all of Melody's songs by heart.

[16:23] - So you connected more with Melody than Ariel?

[16:26] - Yeah.

[16:27] Ariel kind of fell in love with a guy at a first glance

[16:29] and went all in.

[16:30] I don't know if that's my tea, you know what I mean?

[16:33] - Are you excited for the new "Little Mermaid"

[16:35] that's coming out?

[16:36] - I think it's amazing

[16:38] that they chose such a talented actress.

[16:40] Personally, I wish that we could have seen a unique story.

[16:45] With "the Little Mermaid" giving us

[16:47] a hand-me-down character,

[16:48] I would've liked to see them bring

[16:50] a little black mermaid out who wasn't Ariel,

[16:52] who was someone else to add to the lore.

[16:55] But I am excited that she got that role.

[16:57] I think she's going to represent the role beautifully

[16:59] and I'm excited that we get to see

[17:02] more black mermaids on the screen for sure.

[17:03] - In the mermaid community, we were looking at

[17:06] a bunch of mermaids and it was hard to find

[17:09] like women of color in this role.

[17:11] Do you experience that?

[17:12] - The mermaid community is majority non-black mermaids,

[17:16] but also in general, the statistics on the number

[17:19] of black people who are full grown adults

[17:21] that don't know how to swim

[17:22] or that have never experienced time in the water

[17:24] are exceedingly high.

[17:26] And I've never really enjoyed swimming

[17:29] until I got in a mermaid tail.

[17:32] Then suddenly the motion came more naturally to me.

[17:34] The flow of it felt more surreal

[17:37] and it became a more meditative experience for me

[17:39] - What do you want the world to know about mermaids?

[17:42] - I want the world to know, A, that we're here

[17:45] and available for your parties.

[17:48] - Link in the video description,

[17:50] if you wanna hire Quinn for your birthday party.

[17:53] - The message is that anything is possible.

[17:56] Anything is possible. Do not limit yourself.

[17:59] Do what makes you happy,

[18:00] and find a way to make it work for you.

[18:02] - So do you wanna share a little bit more

[18:04] about what we're going to do tomorrow?

[18:05] - Yeah, do tomorrow I'm going to take you down to the beach,

[18:08] and we're gonna meet some kids,

[18:10] and you're gonna get to experience what it's like

[18:12] to be a real life mermaid.

[18:14] - All right, we're putting the trading into action.

[18:16] - Yep. - Do you think I'm ready?

[18:18] - We'll see. (both laughing)

[18:22] (dramatic music)

[18:28] - So Quinn, why am I putting this tail on again?

[18:30] - I brought you to this beach so we can surprise some kids.

[18:33] It's one of my favorite things to do as a mermaid,

[18:35] just bring a little bit of magic back to their daily lives.

[18:37] They didn't realize they were gonna meet a mermaid

[18:39] when they came to the beach, but they're gonna see you,

[18:41] and they're gonna remember you for the rest of their life.

[18:43] - That sounds so fun.

[18:44] If only I could become the mermaid.

[18:46] - You gotta believe. - Okay, I'm trying.

[18:49] I see a whole bunch of kids over there.

[18:53] As soon as I have this on, we're gonna get them over here.

[18:56] Definitely need more lube.

[18:59] What are you gonna do with this plastic bottle?

[19:00] We can't have a plastic bottle on the beach.

[19:02] - We're taking it with us, of course.

[19:04] - And recycling. - Recycling is mandatory.

[19:10] - Pirate to the rescue.

[19:13] - There it is.

[19:16] - Sorry, I promise I'm gonna turn a little more.

[19:18] - Victory!

[19:18] - [Pirate] There you go. (Sky singing)

[19:20] - What's your? - (gasps) I don't know.

[19:23] You name me. Starfish?

[19:25] Starla? - Starla?

[19:27] - Mmhmm. - Okay, Starla.

[19:28] Starla Starfish, Starla Starfish.

[19:30] Okay, they're coming, they're coming.

[19:31] Oh my God, I'm so nervous.

[19:32] - Hi!

[19:34] - It's a real life mermaid!

[19:38] - Oh my God, they're beautiful!

[19:40] - [Quinn] My name is Quintessence and this is Starla, hi.

[19:44] - Hi. Oh my god.

[19:45] Can I tell you a secret?

[19:47] This is my first time coming on land,

[19:49] so I'm a little nervous.

[19:51] - I never seen a mermaid before.

[19:53] - I never seen a human before.

[19:54] - [Quinn] This is a special moment, you guys!

[19:58] - Wow. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[20:02] - How does you makeup stay on?

[20:04] - Well, we do it in the sea, so it's waterproof.

[20:07] - Made of, you know, sea materials.

[20:09] - Yeah, jellyfish jelly, coral dust,

[20:11] all of those fun things.

[20:12] - How old are you guys?

[20:13] - How old am I? How old do you think I am.

[20:16] - You look like 19.

[20:16] - What do you guys think?

[20:17] - 20?

[20:18] - Oh my goldfish!

[20:20] I am actually 157.

[20:23] - You look good for you age!

[20:26] - [Quinn] Thank you!

[20:27] - What kind of food do you eat?

[20:29] - Kelp salad.

[20:30] - Do you know Ariel?

[20:31] - Oh, I don't know Ariel personally.

[20:33] She lives mostly on land with her human boy,

[20:35] but I do see King Triton and Princess Attina

[20:38] when they come to our bi-annual summits

[20:40] to see our Queen Catalina.

[20:41] - How do your guys's hair stay dry?

[20:44] - Well we've been out here for a while in the sun.

[20:46] Before you came over, we were lounging here,

[20:49] just drying a little bit,

[20:51] but we'll have to get back in the water soon.

[20:53] - Do you guys want to get a picture.

[20:54] One, two, three.

[20:56] - [All] Octopus squeeze!

[20:59] - [Kids] Bye.

[21:00] - [Sky] Bye guys, have a good day.

[21:02] Protect our oceans, okay?

[21:04] It's up to you guys.

[21:06] You guys have a reason now, right?

[21:06] - [Both] Bye.

[21:09] - [Quinn] Bye guppies. I had a whale of a time today.

[21:11] - I'm gonna cry. I really enjoyed that.

[21:14] (uplifting music)

[21:18] What can humans learn from mermaids?

[21:20] - Humans can learn to live cohesively

[21:23] with their environment from mermaids.

[21:24] Mermaids don't damage the sea with our existence.

[21:28] We don't pull from the ocean.

[21:31] It's a give and take relationship.

[21:32] We always make sure that we're putting back out

[21:34] just as much effort as the ocean is giving us.

[21:37] We respect the ocean as our mother

[21:38] and I believe that humans could learn

[21:40] to do the same with their land.

[21:41] Well how was that?

[21:42] - I was a little nervous at first, a little uncomfortable,

[21:45] 'cause I wanna be a good mermaid for the kids

[21:47] and I didn't know what I was doing,

[21:49] but I feel like I got in the hang of it.

[21:51] And just seeing the reaction was so rewarding.

[21:53] - I think you totally nailed it.

[21:55] I could totally see your mersona coming to life.

[21:57] - Thank you, thank you.

[21:59] - Starla Starfish is a name to remember, guys

[22:02] - Starla Starfish, I will be signing

[22:04] autographs after this video.

[22:06] I'm wondering what you wanna leave everyone with?

[22:09] - Do what you love and love what you do.

[22:10] You have one life. Make the most of it.

[22:12] Don't let anybody tell you what is and isn't possible

[22:14] because we are creating our own reality every day.

[22:17] - Yes! Thank you so much, Quinn.

[22:20] - Of course, thank you for coming out here and doing this.

[22:22] Are you kidding me? This is crazy.

[22:24] Most people never do this.

[22:25] - We are so curious to hear what all of you

[22:27] think about this video.

[22:28] So please comment and let us know your thoughts.

[22:30] Ask us questions in the comments.

[22:32] Like this video if you enjoyed it.

[22:34] Thank you so much for watching

[22:35] and the adventure continues.

Professional mermaids are hired for paid performances and events, maintain recognizable personas or "mer-sonas," and hold certifications in lifeguarding, freediving, and scuba. Recreational mermaids wear tails for fun without the performance, public visibility, or specialized skill requirements. Professional mermaids also develop character backstories and lore to engage audiences, particularly children.
Professional mermaid tails can weigh up to 38 pounds and require intense ankle conditioning to wear. Performers commonly experience charlie horses, toe cramps, and ankle pain while performing. The sustained physical demand means mermaids must train their ankles and core strength much like athletes, and they must manage bathroom needs carefully since sealed tails prevent bathroom breaks.
Professional mermaids typically hold certifications in lifeguarding, freediving, and scuba diving. These ensure they can operate safely underwater, manage breath control, handle emergencies, and execute complex underwater movements during performances.
Professional mermaids use meditation, breathwork, yoga, and sound healing to manage anxiety and stay emotionally present. They also develop genuine connections to the magical purpose of their work—often framing it around ocean conservation and inspiring wonder in children. Mermaids acknowledge that smiling through pain and fatigue is part of the job, and many report that the emotional payoff of connecting with children justifies the physical and mental effort.
According to professional mermaids, the role represents mysticism, magic, ocean safety, and conservation. Mermaids serve as mascots of the sea that help people understand the importance of protecting oceans and the earth. Many mermaids also approach the role from a spiritual perspective, using it as a platform for teaching environmental consciousness and inspiring genuine wonder and imagination in audiences.
Children's reactions range from extreme excitement to fear, with some running toward the mermaid and others running away. Most commonly, excited children ask rapid-fire questions about what mermaids eat, how they use the bathroom, where they live, and whether the mermaid is truly real. Professional mermaids expect these intense reactions and prepare character answers and backstories in advance.
A mer-sona is a professional mermaid's unique character identity, personality, and backstory. Mermaids create mer-sonas to have prepared answers for the inevitable questions children ask, to establish a consistent public presence, and to add personality and authenticity to their performances. Examples include identifying as a "betta fish mermaid" or developing a full character mythology.
