Anad Bhaya Vadbhageeho: Fearlessnessin Spiritual Practice

Professor Paramjeet Singh
Professor Paramjeet Singh
Nov 30, 2021
読了 約5分

Anad bhaya vadbhageeho—a phrase rooted in Sikh and broader South Asian spiritual philosophy—speaks to the state of being without fear. Professor Paramjeet Singh's teaching addresses fearlessness not as the absence of threat, but as a fundamental shift in consciousness that dissolves the ego's defensive postures and opens the practitioner to direct experience of the divine. This state is understood as inseparable from spiritual liberation and represents a maturation of the inner life where the illusion of separation (and the fear it generates) has been seen through.

What Does Fearlessness Mean in Spiritual Context?

Fearlessness, in the language of Sikh and Hindu philosophy, is not bravado or recklessness. Rather, it describes a condition of consciousness where the separate self—the ego that imagines itself vulnerable—has ceased to be the primary reference point. When Professor Paramjeet Singh teaches anad bhaya, he is pointing to a state in which the practitioner no longer derives identity from the limited, mortal body-mind, and therefore has nothing to lose in the conventional sense.

This fearlessness emerges from clear seeing: the recognition that the true self is neither born nor dies, neither gains nor loses. It is this understanding that naturally dissolves the anxiety that ordinarily drives human behavior—the anxiety rooted in the belief that the "I" is fragile and must be protected at all costs. When that belief is exposed as illusory, fear loses its power.

How Does Fear Block Spiritual Progress?

Fear operates as a primary mechanism of the ego's self-preservation. It narrows perception, contracts the body, and keeps attention locked in survival mode. In spiritual practice, fear manifests in subtle ways: fear of losing what we have, fear of not becoming who we imagine we should be, fear of criticism, fear of death, fear of being exposed as inadequate. These fears, though they seem to protect us, actually fragment consciousness and prevent the unified awareness that spiritual practice aims to cultivate.

Professor Paramjeet Singh's teaching suggests that as long as fear dominates the inner landscape, the practitioner remains identified with the limited self and cannot fully open to the boundless awareness that is always present. The ego uses fear as a tool to maintain its perceived separation from the whole. Without addressing and transcending fear, spiritual development remains incomplete.

What is the Path to Fearlessness?

The cultivation of fearlessness in spiritual practice typically involves both intellectual understanding and direct experience. Intellectually, the practitioner contemplates the impermanence and insubstantiality of the individual self—the recognition that identity itself is a construct that arises and passes away. This contemplation, when genuine, begins to loosen fear's grip.

Simultaneously, sustained practice (whether through meditation, kirtan, mantra repetition, or service) trains the nervous system to remain calm in the presence of discomfort and uncertainty. Over time, the practitioner discovers through repeated experience that survival and wellbeing do not depend on controlling every external outcome. This experiential learning is what truly transforms the nervous system and allows fearlessness to take root.

In Sikh tradition, as reflected in Professor Paramjeet Singh's teaching, fearlessness is also understood as a fruit of surrendering to divine will—trusting in a reality larger than one's individual concerns. When the practitioner rests in that trust, the burden of self-protection is released.

How Does Fearlessness Relate to Liberation?

In both Hindu and Sikh philosophy, liberation (moksha or mukti) is inseparable from fearlessness. This is because bondage itself is rooted in the fear-driven illusion of separation. To be bound is to live as if you are a separate, vulnerable entity in a world of threats. To be liberated is to recognize your true nature as whole, complete, and untouchable by circumstance.

Fearlessness is thus not a side effect of liberation—it is liberation itself. The person who has truly recognized their nature as consciousness itself (rather than the limited mind-body) has nowhere left to hide and nothing left to defend. This paradoxically brings absolute freedom: the freedom to act with integrity, to love without condition, and to serve without calculating personal gain.

What Does Fearlessness Look Like in Daily Life?

A person established in fearlessness does not withdraw from the world or become passive. Rather, fearlessness enables full engagement with life because the actions are no longer driven by defensive posturing or the need to control outcomes. Professor Paramjeet Singh's teaching tradition suggests that such a person can speak truth without arrogance, serve others without resentment, and face difficulty without collapse.

This does not mean the person becomes immune to physical pain or hardship. Rather, they no longer suffer the psychological layer of fear—the interpretation of experience as a threat to their essential being. This inner stability allows for appropriate response to circumstances rather than reactive patterns driven by anxiety.

Fearlessness in daily life also manifests as a kind of openness: the person is not constantly guarding against judgment, embarrassment, or failure. This openness naturally leads to greater authenticity, deeper relationships, and more creative engagement with challenges.

Where to Go From Here

If you are drawn to the teaching of anad bhaya vadbhageeho, begin by observing the fears that currently shape your life—not to judge them, but to see how they narrow your choices and contracts your consciousness. Develop a daily practice that anchors you in present-moment awareness, whether through meditation, breath work, or devotional practice. Contemplate the impermanent nature of all forms, including the individual self. Study texts from your spiritual tradition that point to the nature of consciousness beyond fear. Most importantly, seek out teachers and communities that embody the fearlessness you wish to cultivate, and allow their presence to gradually reshape your nervous system. Fearlessness is not achieved through willpower alone, but through the patient, faithful unfolding of your own true nature.

Anad bhaya refers to fearlessness—a spiritual state where the individual no longer identifies with the limited, mortal ego and therefore has transcended the fear mechanisms that ordinarily drive human behavior. It represents a fundamental shift in consciousness toward recognizing one's true nature as whole and untouchable by circumstance.
Fear operates as a primary mechanism of ego-defense that contracts consciousness and keeps attention locked in survival mode. It fragments awareness and prevents the unified, boundless consciousness that spiritual practice aims to reveal. As long as fear dominates, the practitioner remains identified with the limited self.
No. Fearlessness is not the absence of physical threat or the suppression of natural caution. Rather, it is the dissolution of the ego's identification with the individual self and its illusion of separation, which is the root of psychological fear. A fearless person may still respond appropriately to danger, but is not driven by defensive anxiety.
Bondage is rooted in the fear-driven illusion of separation; liberation is the recognition of one's true nature as whole consciousness. Fearlessness and liberation are thus not separate—fearlessness is the lived experience of liberation itself, where the burden of self-protection is released.
Yes. Fearlessness develops through sustained spiritual practice (meditation, devotion, contemplation) that gradually rewires the nervous system and through intellectual understanding of the impermanent, constructed nature of the ego-self. It emerges from both direct experience and clear seeing of one's true nature.
A person established in fearlessness acts with integrity without needing to control outcomes, speaks truth without arrogance, and serves without resentment. They respond appropriately to challenges rather than reacting from defensive anxiety, and their greater openness allows for deeper authenticity and relationships.
