Understanding Your Soul's Plan:Life Design Before Birth

Jai Dev Singh

Rob Schwartz, a spiritual teacher and past-life regression specialist, teaches that your soul designs its life plan before incarnating into physical form. This pre-birth blueprint includes specific challenges, relationships, and events meant to facilitate soul growth and healing. Understanding your life plan—discoverable through regression work and spiritual inquiry—reframes suffering as purposeful and reveals the hidden contracts and agreements your soul made before you were born.

Lecture · 7 sections

What Is the Soul's Life Plan?

The core premise of Schwartz's teaching is that consciousness does not begin at birth. Before incarnating into a human body, your soul exists in a non-physical realm where it designs—in collaboration with guides, loved ones, and other souls—a detailed blueprint for the life it is about to live. This is not a rigid script but rather a map of significant events, relationships, and challenges that the soul has chosen to experience for its own evolution.

This life plan includes the major themes your soul wishes to work with: patterns to heal, lessons to learn, relationships to deepen, and spiritual capacities to develop. The plan typically includes difficult events—illness, loss, conflict, failure—not as punishment but as intentional growth experiences. Your soul chooses these challenges because it has identified them as necessary for its development in this incarnation.

How Do Challenges Serve the Soul's Growth?

One of the most significant aspects of understanding your soul's plan is recognizing that hardship has purpose. When you encounter suffering—physical pain, emotional trauma, relationship conflict, or loss—from the soul's perspective, these are not random misfortunes but chosen opportunities.

Schwartz's work reveals that souls often plan difficult circumstances because they want to develop specific qualities: compassion through witnessing others' pain, resilience through personal adversity, forgiveness through betrayal, or unconditional love through caring for someone with a chronic illness. The soul says, in effect, "I want to become someone who can love unconditionally; therefore, I will plan a relationship that challenges me to do so."

This reframing does not minimize real suffering. Rather, it offers a context in which suffering becomes meaningful. Pain that feels meaningless creates despair; pain understood as part of a soul-level agreement becomes, paradoxically, more bearable because it serves a purpose the soul recognizes.

What Are Soul Contracts and Agreements?

Before birth, souls make agreements with other souls about the roles they will play in each other's lives. Your spouse, your parents, your children, your difficult boss, even your enemy—each of these relationships may be a soul contract made in the non-physical realm.

These contracts often involve one soul volunteering to play a challenging role in another's life. A parent might agree to be unavailable so their child develops independence. A partner might agree to leave the relationship so the other grows into their authentic self. A sibling might play the role of rival so their brother or sister learns healthy competition and boundaries.

Understanding that a relationship is a soul contract—rather than assuming it happened by chance or that someone wronged you—can fundamentally shift how you process that relationship. The other person is not your enemy; they are your collaborator in a growth project you both signed up for.

How Can You Discover Your Life Plan?

Schwartz specializes in past-life and between-lives soul regressions, therapeutic hypnosis sessions in which a person is guided into deep relaxation and asked to recall memories from past incarnations or from the time between lives. In a between-lives regression, clients often report encountering guides, reviewing their previous life with spiritual mentors, and planning their current incarnation in detail.

These regressions frequently reveal:

  • Specific agreements made with people you know in this life
  • The soul-level reasons you chose your family of origin
  • The purpose behind illnesses, disabilities, or chronic conditions
  • Why you are drawn to particular vocations or creative pursuits
  • The deeper meaning of traumatic events

Clients typically report that these sessions feel profoundly true and bring a sense of peace and purpose, even when the revelations include difficult truths. Knowing that your soul chose a particular challenge, and understanding why, often reduces shame, blame, and despair.

Beyond regression, you can explore your life plan through contemplative practice, journaling, working with a skilled therapist or spiritual teacher, and paying attention to recurring themes in your life. Where do you repeatedly encounter the same type of challenge? What patterns show up across relationships, careers, or health? These repetitions often point to themes your soul is working to master.

Why Does Understanding Your Plan Matter?

Recognizing your life plan serves several functions:

It transforms victimhood into agency. Instead of seeing yourself as a passive victim of circumstance, you recognize yourself as an architect of your own spiritual journey. This shift from helplessness to intentionality is profoundly healing.

It reframes suffering as meaningful. Chronic pain, loss, or hardship that seems senseless becomes understandable as part of a larger growth agenda. Meaning is one of the most powerful antidotes to despair.

It clarifies your relationships. Understanding that difficult people are soul collaborators rather than enemies opens space for forgiveness, gratitude, and authentic connection.

It reveals your soul's priorities. By looking at the major challenges and themes in your life, you can discern what qualities your soul is cultivating in this lifetime. This knowledge can guide your choices and help you cooperate with your own soul's agenda.

What About Free Will and Predestination?

A common concern when encountering the idea of a life plan is: if my life is planned, do I have free will? Schwartz's teaching suggests that this is not an either-or question. Your soul plans the major themes and key events, but how you navigate those events remains your choice. The plan provides the curriculum; your decisions, moment by moment, determine how you learn it.

You might plan to learn forgiveness through betrayal. Whether you actually forgive—or instead hold a grudge for decades—is up to you. Your soul's plan is not a prison sentence but an invitation to become the person you already know, at a soul level, that you wish to be.

Where to Go From Here

If the concept of a life plan resonates with you, the next step might be to begin noticing the themes and patterns in your own life. What challenges keep returning? What qualities seem most important to develop? Who are the people who have shaped you most profoundly, and what did they teach you?

You might explore past-life or between-lives regression work with a qualified practitioner, or you might approach the inquiry through meditation, therapy, or spiritual direction. The goal is not to become passively resigned to difficulty but to recognize your own intentionality and wisdom at a soul level—and to align your earthly choices with the growth your soul came here to accomplish.
