Playing Handpan Together: A Duo Jam From a Turkey Retreat

K
Kabeção
Oct 2, 2026
3 min de lecture

A 70-second clip of two handpans sounding together, posted by the handpan player Kabeção, is a small document of a shared musical moment. The video is a duet with his friend Burcu Filiz Malkoç, filmed during his first trip to Turkey, which he describes as a handpan retreat built around teaching, extended jam sessions and a concert for the students. The clip is brief and almost wordless, so its value lies less in instruction than in the glimpse it offers of what playing together on this instrument looks like in practice.

Lecture · 2 sections

What does a short handpan duet like this one show?

The transcript holds only music, with two spoken words, "Pupils.", followed by an audience laugh. There is no spoken explanation of technique, tuning or form, and nothing in the clip should be read beyond what it plainly is: two players making music in front of people who were part of the trip. The description supplies the context the audio does not. Kabeção writes that he was invited to Turkey "for the very first time, together with my family," and that the stay included "a handpan retreat, sharing teachings, lots of jams, and a concert for all the students." He also thanks Burcu Filiz Malkoç and the Ojas studio credited in the post.

The hashtags name the instruments the post is about: pantam, cupola, hang and hangdrum. The description does not say which player was on which instrument, so it is worth not guessing. What it does say is the spirit of the trip. In his words, he hoped to connect "with its people, culture, and music," and the jam format of the retreat is the kind of setting where that connection tends to happen through playing rather than talking. A clip this short cannot prove that, but it is consistent with what the post describes.

Where to go from here

Kabeção ends the post by saying he hopes to return to Turkey soon and "share more of this journey." For fuller teaching and the longer story of the trip, follow his channel for future uploads, and watch the other handpan clips he has posted for the instrument's technique and approach. Treat this Short as a snapshot: a reminder that the handpan is, at its best, a duet instrument, and that some of its most useful lessons arrive in the jam.

To return to the source, watch the original clip on Kabeção's YouTube channel.
