Dharma of Zoos During a Hurricane: Finding Resilience

Be Here Now Network

7 min de lectura

In this dharma talk, Jack Kornfield uses the metaphor of zoos during hurricanes to illuminate core Buddhist principles about resilience, non-striving, and the natural wisdom that emerges when we stop trying to control our circumstances. By observing how animals and caretakers respond to crisis, he reveals how genuine practice is not about becoming something artificial, but about trusting the heart and allowing our own nature—as flexible as water and as resilient as earth—to unfold naturally.

What Does a Zoo During a Hurricane Teach About Dharma?

Jack Kornfield often draws dharma lessons from ordinary situations and unexpected places. The image of a zoo during a hurricane—a place where humans, animals, and institutional systems all face disruption and vulnerability—serves as a rich teaching moment. When crisis descends, pretense falls away. The zoo keepers cannot rely on routine. The animals cannot be controlled through normal methods. Everyone involved is brought to the present moment through necessity.

This situation mirrors what Kornfield identifies as a core insight in Buddhist practice: when we become still and drop our habitual patterns of trying to be something, what remains is not a manufactured spiritual state but something fundamentally natural and whole. The dharma of the zoo during a hurricane is the dharma of crisis revealing truth—showing us who we are when our defenses and strategies no longer work.

How Does Stillness Reveal What Is Natural and True?

Kornfield teaches that there is a quality of authenticity that emerges only when we cease the constant project of self-improvement and self-creation. In his words, "When we become still, when we're not trying to be something, when we're in the moments of the trusting heart—what's left is not imitation or artificial, it is as natural as the Tao, as resilient and flexible as water, and as forgiving as the earth."

This is not a passive teaching. Rather, it points to the paradox at the heart of Buddhist practice: genuine transformation does not come through forcing ourselves into a better shape, but through relaxing our grip on who we think we should be. The zoo during a hurricane strips away that luxury of pretense. Everyone is simply responding—to weather, to fear, to responsibility, to love for the creatures in their care.

When we practice meditation and mindfulness, we are cultivating the conditions for this stillness to arise naturally in our ordinary lives, not just in moments of crisis. We learn to drop the performance, the image management, the constant self-commentary. What remains is remarkably resourceful, remarkably kind, and remarkably alive.

What Does Water's Flexibility Teach Us About Resilience?

Kornfield invokes the traditional Taoist image of water as a metaphor for how resilience works. Water does not resist the hurricane; it flows with it. Water is supremely flexible—it conforms to whatever shape is demanded, yet over time wears away mountains. This is not weakness; it is the deepest form of strength.

In the context of a zoo during a hurricane, both human caregivers and animals often exhibit this quality. Rather than rigid adherence to protocol, there is adaptation moment by moment. Rather than panic-driven grasping for control, there is attentive response. The teaching here is that true safety does not come from managing our environment perfectly, but from developing the flexibility to work with whatever arises.

This applies directly to meditation practice. One of the great illusions is that spiritual development means becoming more solid, more certain, more defended. In reality, deepening practice often means becoming more fluid, more responsive, more able to move with changing circumstances without losing our center. Like water, we remain ourselves while adapting completely to conditions.

What Role Does the Trusting Heart Play in Dharma Practice?

Kornfield emphasizes "the moments of the trusting heart" as central to his teaching. This is not blind faith or naïve optimism. Trust, in the Buddhist context, is the result of repeated direct experience of the reliability of dharma. It is the fruit of practice over time—discovering that when we show up honestly, when we remain present, when we let go of our schemes, something larger can work through us.

In a zoo during a hurricane, trust appears in many forms: the zookeeper's trust in their training and their capacity to respond; the animals' trust in their caretakers; the implicit trust that care and attention matter even when outcome is uncertain. This is practical trust, tested by real conditions. It is not sentimental. It is rooted in action and relationship.

When we cultivate a trusting heart through meditation and mindfulness practice, we are training ourselves to release the illusion that we can control all outcomes and instead move through life with openness, responsiveness, and the confidence that our deepest nature is sound. This is the trust that allows genuine resilience to emerge.

How Does Forgiveness and Earth-Like Acceptance Show Up in Crisis?

Kornfield notes that what emerges in stillness is "as forgiving as the earth." The earth accepts what falls upon it—rain, snow, debris, footsteps, buildings. It does not resist or blame. This is not passivity; it is a fundamental acceptance of reality as it is, paired with the capacity to sustain life and growth regardless.

During a hurricane at a zoo, forgiveness is tested in real ways. Things go wrong. Plans fail. Mistakes may be made. The capacity to move forward without being locked in blame or resentment—for ourselves, for circumstances, for others—is essential. The earth-like quality Kornfield describes is this capacity to absorb shock and continue holding life.

In Buddhist practice, this principle is cultivated through loving-kindness and forgiveness meditation, through understanding the interconnectedness of all causes and conditions, and through repeated practice of releasing grudges and self-judgment. It is a concrete skill developed over time, not merely a nice idea.

Why Does Crisis Strip Away Artifice?

One of the deepest teachings in this dharma is implicit: crisis reveals what is real. When a hurricane approaches, no one has time for ego management or social performance. The zoo keepers work not because they are performing service, but because the animals depend on them. The animals respond not from training alone, but from their own instinct for survival and their relationship with their caretakers.

This is why Kornfield repeatedly emphasizes that authentic dharma practice is not about becoming something artificial or special. It is about clearing away the layers of pretense until what remains is simple, direct, and natural. A hurricane does this work involuntarily. Meditation and mindfulness do this work gradually, with intention, so that we can access our natural wholeness in ordinary circumstances and not only in extremity.

The dharma of the zoo during a hurricane is thus a teaching about what remains when conditions force us to be genuine. And the practice is learning to access that genuineness not through waiting for crisis, but through deliberate cultivation of stillness, trust, flexibility, and forgiveness.

Where to Go from Here

If this teaching resonates, consider beginning or deepening a meditation practice. Kornfield teaches that meditation is not about achieving a special state, but about training the capacity for presence and stillness that allows your natural wisdom to emerge. His courses on mindfulness meditation fundamentals and walking the eightfold path offer systematic approaches to this training.

You might also reflect on moments in your own life when crisis or difficulty stripped away pretense and revealed your genuine capacity. What did you learn about yourself? What qualities emerged that you were not consciously trying to produce? These moments point to the same truth the zoo during the hurricane reveals: that your deepest nature is sound, resilient, and already whole. Practice is the means of making that truth accessible in all circumstances, not just the difficult ones.

Kornfield teaches that genuine spiritual development is not about self-improvement or performing an ideal self, but about releasing the constant effort to become something other than what you are. When you stop this striving, your natural wisdom—as flexible, resilient, and whole as water and earth—emerges naturally.
Meditation trains the capacity for present-moment awareness and trust that allows you to respond flexibly to crisis rather than react from fear or habit. By practicing stillness regularly, you develop the equanimity and clarity needed to adapt—like water—when difficult circumstances arise.
A trusting heart is confidence rooted in direct experience that when you show up honestly, remain present, and let go of control, something larger can work through you. This trust is earned through repeated practice and is tested and deepened by real circumstances, not based on blind faith.
The zoo during a hurricane is a situation where humans and animals are forced into genuine presence and adaptation—pretense falls away under pressure. This reveals the dharma that authentic practice is not artificial, but as natural as our own being when stripped of self-protective strategies.
Kornfield uses earth as a metaphor for unconditional acceptance—the earth receives what falls upon it without resistance or blame, yet continues to sustain life. This quality of forgiveness, developed through practice, allows us to absorb difficulty and continue growing rather than being locked in resentment.
Resilience in the Buddhist sense is flexible, like water, rather than rigid like a fortress. True strength lies in the capacity to adapt and flow with circumstances rather than resist them, and in the ability to remain present and responsive even when control is impossible.
