Beyond Mindfulness: How Welcoming Panic Became a Path

An audience sits in an evening hall. Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher in his forties, stands before them with an offer: three paths forward. You can meditate together right now. He can tell you his story of how he learned meditation. Or he can teach you the technique itself. He asks people to raise their hands. "Many of you don't like to meditate," he says with a warm laugh. The room chooses his story. What unfolds is not a polished history, but the testimony of a man whose childhood panic attacks became the doorway to a meditation practice so effective he's spent his adult life teaching it to others.

The Bored Child and the Great Teacher

Mingyur Rinpoche's journey into formal practice began not with spiritual longing, but with need. Around age seven or eight, he suffered from panic attacks. The episodes terrified him enough that he began looking for solutions. His father was a great meditation teacher—a figure of genuine authority in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition—and the boy wondered if that lineage might offer relief. But he was afraid to ask. He was too young, he thought. His father might refuse him or dismiss him as incapable. So he consulted his mother, who made the decision for him: she asked his father on the boy's behalf.

His father's response startled him. Rather than turning him away, the older man was delighted. "You're very young," he said, "but are you interested to learn meditation? You can ask me any question, and I will teach you meditation." This acceptance was everything. A seven-year-old given agency over his own practice is not a small thing in traditional Buddhist training.

The first technique was breathing meditation: watch the breath, feel it coming in and going out. Textbook instructions. Mingyur Rinpoche sat with it and found it profoundly boring. His friends were outside playing—he could hear them laughing—while he sat watching his own respiratory system, convinced that five minutes had passed when the timer showed only two. He liked the idea of meditation. The reality was something else.

And yet the practice did help. When panic came, meditation provided a shelter. The problem was that the relief was temporary. Without continuous practice, the panic would return. He would meditate when fear spiked, the fear would ease, he'd stop meditating—and the cycle would repeat. "Like a stock market," he says, describing the volatility of his emotional weather.

The Technique That Made It Worse

When panic arrived during his early practice, his instinct was to push it away. "Hello panic, get out," he would say to himself while meditating. "I'm meditating." The panic didn't comply. In fact, it intensified. Sometimes it grew louder, more insistent, more overwhelming. He felt betrayed by the practice. Meditation, he thought, was supposed to help him—and now it seemed to amplify the very thing he wanted to escape.

He returned to his father and reported this failure. And his father gave him an instruction that inverted everything he understood about how to work with his own mind: "Don't say get out to panic. You have to welcome the panic."

The logic was strange. How could welcoming panic possibly help? But his father explained a teaching that would reshape his entire relationship to meditation practice: panic doesn't become an obstacle to meditation. Panic is fine. No panic is also fine. What matters is not the content of experience but the quality of awareness behind it.

Mingyur Rinpoche changed his approach. Now when panic came, he would greet it: "Hello panic, welcome." And something shifted immediately. It wasn't that the panic vanished, but that his relationship to it transformed. He was no longer fighting an intruder. He was acknowledging a visitor. The relief was tangible enough that he began testing the principle: if I say welcome, maybe you won't come back again. But that was the old motivation talking—still trying to use acceptance as a tool to banish the unwanted. Time would teach him otherwise.

The Retreat and the Metaphor That Changed Everything

At thirteen, Mingyur Rinpoche was admitted to a traditional three-year retreat at Sherab Ling Monastery in India. The commitment was total: three years of intensive practice, away from ordinary life, structured entirely around meditation and study. He imagined that this enforced discipline would crush his laziness—the procrastination and resistance that had always undermined his practice. Surely, removed from temptation and distraction, he would finally break through.

The first month was transcendent. No laziness. Pure practice. Then, in the second week of the second month, laziness began to emerge. By the third month, it was everywhere. He would sit for formal sessions and find himself nodding off, slipping into doze, his attention fragmenting. And now, in the confined space of retreat, his panic and his laziness had become companions—making each other worse, each feeding the other.

By the beginning of his second year, with two years and nine months still ahead, he faced a crisis of faith. The practice that was supposed to transform him seemed only to reveal how broken he was. He would never make it through.

Then he remembered the teachings his father and other teachers had given him. Don't fight the panic. Make friends with it. Panic cannot be an obstacle to meditation because the essence of meditation is awareness, and awareness is like space.

He sat with that metaphor. Awareness is like space. And panic, emotions, thoughts—they are like clouds. Or weather. Weather exists within space, but weather never changes the nature of space itself. It had been snowing weeks before, with storm winds, the sky dark. Today the weather was clear and beautiful. But neither the snow nor the sunshine altered what space fundamentally is. Space remains free, present, pure—unchanged by whatever weather moves through it. Panic is a storm. But it is a storm moving through an awareness that is as unchanged by it as the sky is changed by the weather.

"So I decided," he says, "to welcome panic really, from my heart. I thought: now I'm going to learn how to live with my panic. Not try to get rid of it. Not try to block it. Not try to fight it." He isolated himself in his room, away from the group practice where his panic would worsen. And he sat with it. He maintained awareness and welcomed the panic. He felt the heart racing, the tightness in the chest, the dizziness, the sweating—all of it like the turbulence a plane encounters. But now he wasn't bracing against it. He was letting it move through him while remaining aware.

Within days, panic and the young meditator became good friends. When panic came now, he felt excitement rather than dread. He was learning something. The symptoms would arise—the familiar physical cascade—but they no longer scared him because he understood what he was looking at. It was weather. He was the sky. And a few weeks later, something unexpected happened: panic said goodbye. After becoming the greatest teacher he'd known during that retreat, it simply stopped visiting.

What Changed—And What Didn't

This is where the teaching becomes subtle and secular. He doesn't claim that meditation eliminated his panic or healed some psychological wound. His panic eventually left, yes. But the real transformation wasn't about the panic at all. The transformation was in what he learned about the nature of awareness itself and how to relate to any difficult experience.

In the teaching sessions from this video, Mingyur Rinpoche clarifies a misconception baked into much popular meditation instruction. People often think meditation is about reaching a special state—a blank mind, perfect calm, an absence of thought. But that's a misunderstanding of what meditation actually does. "Awareness is always there," he says. "Never change." The goal is not to create or achieve something that doesn't exist. The goal is to recognize what is already present and to understand its nature.

When people ask what meditation changes, his answer is precise: meditation doesn't make thoughts disappear or emotions vanish. It changes your relationship to those experiences. "I like to be aware of my awareness," he says, "to see my awareness as much as I can." This is not mindfulness in the popular sense—the controlled observation of present-moment content. This is something deeper: seeing the awareness itself, understanding that painful emotions and experiences are temporary weather patterns, and that the witness observing them is unchanged.

Training the Mind to Welcome What Hurts

The practical instructions he offers are deceptively simple, rooted in the same principle he discovered as a child. When pain arises during meditation—and it will, whether physical discomfort in the body or emotional intensity in the mind—the instruction is direct: bring awareness to the pain itself. Feel it. Don't minimize it or try to bypass it. "Pain is unpleasant feeling, so just be aware of that pain," he says. Scan it. Notice where it lives in the body. What is its actual texture and quality when you stop resisting it?

He acknowledges the objection immediately: "When something is so painful, we can't keep our awareness with it." That's true. The capacity to remain present with intense experience is not infinite and must be built over time through practice. "You need to build up this habit," he says. The training is gradual. But gradually, over weeks and months and years, something shifts. The mind learns that difficult experience is not dangerous, that awareness survives it, that panic and pain are not enemies but weather.

And here is where the teaching departs from therapy-speak or self-help platitude: he is not promising that you will feel good. He is not promising relief or cure. He is offering something more radical—the recognition that freedom doesn't depend on your emotional or physical circumstances changing. It depends on understanding the nature of awareness itself. That understanding, he says, is what the Buddhist tradition calls liberation.

Where to go from here

The practice Mingyur Rinpoche offers is available through multiple channels. The Joy of Living Meditation Program is structured for independent learning at your own pace, with his guidance—ideal for someone beginning or working with anxiety. Vajrayana Online provides study and practice in Tibetan Buddhism specifically, for those interested in the traditional framework. Online events and retreats offer opportunities to practice directly with him. His book A World of Difference expands on these teachings in written form. But the core practice is simple enough to begin tonight: sit, notice what arises, and instead of fighting it, ask it to sit with you. See what happens when awareness itself becomes the refuge, not the achievement of any particular state.

[0:10] Hello good, good evening

[0:16] How are you? good so hmm

[0:25] so welcome everyone.

[0:31] So now we have three choices,

[0:34] so I will give you a lot of choice and ask you to raise your hand

[0:38] so you can get a little bit exercise with your hand also

[0:43] so three choice: the first is practiced meditation first, we practice together,

[0:50] second

[0:53] maybe I will tell you my story how I learned meditation, third

[1:00] how to meditate.

[1:05] So, which one first?

[1:10] Practice first raise your hand, ok.

[1:17] My story about how to learn meditation, mmm... how to meditate?

[1:31] Hmm many of you don't like to meditate

[1:36] ok

[1:38] I think my story about how to learn meditation

[1:41] so

[1:43] When I was young, around

[1:45] seven, eight years old, I had the panic

[1:49] panic attack

[1:51] so I was looking for solution and then

[1:59] my father was a great meditation teacher so

[2:06] I thought "maybe I should learn meditation for my father"

[2:09] but first

[2:11] I thought "oh, maybe I'm too young to learn meditation"

[2:15] so I discussed with my mom "should I ask?

[2:19] to

[2:21] teach my father

[2:23] to me

[2:24] meditation technique or not?" and

[2:27] my mom says "yeah! good idea"

[2:29] but I still thought "oh, maybe I'm too young,

[2:32] my father say oh you're too young, or maybe you´re stupid, you know, I will not teach you meditation"

[2:40] so, I was afraid

[2:42] so then

[2:44] one day my father said "hmm

[2:47] you want to learn

[2:48] meditation, right?"

[2:48] I said "yes, who told you?"

[2:54] and my father said "your mom did"

[2:57] so, my mom asked my father on behalf of me without my permission

[3:06] so but he was so happy, he said "Wow good you're very young

[3:12] But are you interested to learn meditation?

[3:15] so

[3:16] You can ask me any question and I will teach you meditation".

[3:21] So, the first

[3:25] I learned meditation,

[3:26] which is breathing meditation,

[3:26]

[3:27] watch breath,

[3:27]

[3:28] one of my first meditation training

[3:34] but what I found is very boring

[3:36] I sit there and watch breath

[3:38]

[3:42] breathing in

[3:43] what time? Oh no

[3:47] All my friends are playing down there, you know, and I can hear their voice laughing

[3:53] but I was sit there I

[3:56] thought it's already 15 minutes

[3:59] but I did 5 minutes only

[4:03] so I

[4:05] like the idea of meditation, but I don't like the practice of meditation feeling very bored.

[4:14] So

[4:16] when I meditate

[4:18] It is a I have good feeling after that it helps for my panic

[4:26] but then I cannot meditate too long

[4:31] so my meditation is on and off, and

[4:34] my panic also up and down, up and down, up and down, like stock market.

[4:42] So

[4:46] when my panic comes

[4:47] I try to meditate so what I do is

[4:53] so when the panic comes I said "Hello panic, get out, I'm meditating"

[5:01] Breathing in and

[5:04] panic become stronger, sometime louder

[5:09] so then I

[5:13] was little bit disappointed, you know, I thought "meditation it helped helps my panic

[5:20] but actually not", then I went back to my father

[5:24] and I told all this my

[5:28] experience about the meditation, with my father, and my father said "don't

[5:33] say get out to panic.

[5:37] So you have to welcome the panic".

[5:42] For the meditation, panic

[5:47] doesn't become obstacle for meditation, so

[5:54] panic it's ok, not panic it´s ok

[5:58] I thought "Wow,

[6:01] interesting".

[6:04] So then I change my style, a style of meditation a little bit

[6:08] so what I did is I begin to say welcome to my panic

[6:13] so

[6:15] when when panic comes

[6:19] I was meditating and I said "hello panic, welcome"

[6:24] much better

[6:26] so I was very happy

[6:30] so that eventually what I did is "hello, panic welcome

[6:35] (If I say welcome and you will not come again, right?)"

[6:42] So

[6:44] my motivation is to become same thing again.

[6:49] So I

[6:51] learned meditation when I was 9,

[6:55] 10, 11, 12, 13

[6:59] so when I was 13 years old in

[7:02] India a place called Sherab Ling Monastery

[7:06] so

[7:08] There they're going to start

[7:11] traditional three-year retreat for three years

[7:16] so I asked

[7:19] His Eminence Saljey Rinpoche one of my

[7:22] important teacher

[7:24] to have permission to enter three-year retreat

[7:28] but I'm I was a little bit afraid

[7:30] maybe he said "no", because I'm too young and

[7:34] I asked my father to ask

[7:38] Saljey Rinpoche, so that Saljey Rinpoche accepted.

[7:42] Then I can able to join the retreat. So, the main point is

[7:48] If I can able to go into retreat,

[7:51] then my laziness will not come,

[7:55] because I have this laziness always with me, you know,

[7:59] so then I entered the

[8:02] three-year retreat.

[8:03] First, one month,

[8:05] wonderful,

[8:07] no lazy, I

[8:08] was so happy.

[8:11] One month and one week, lazy begin to come up.

[8:17] After two months later, oh

[8:20] lazy is all over the place.

[8:26] So,

[8:27] back to

[8:28]

[8:28] back to before my habit is become less. Although we have sessions, but inside session, first a little bit (laying back) and slowly (doze of to sleep)

[8:47] So not only that: now my laziness and my panic they too become good friend,

[8:54] and now my panic become worse

[8:57] then I thought "what should I do? I

[9:00] still have

[9:02] two more years to go

[9:04] that's the first year, you know, beginning of first year, so I have two years and

[9:10] nine months.

[9:13] So I thought "what should I do?"

[9:16] then I remember the teachings from my father,

[9:19] and all the other teachers,

[9:21] they told me that "don't fight with the panic,

[9:25] make friends, and

[9:28] panic become support for your meditation, panic become your teacher,

[9:35] panic cannot become obstacle for meditation". Why?

[9:42] The essence of meditation is awareness, an awareness

[9:47] Is like space and

[9:50] the panic is like cloud,

[9:52] cloud, or the weather, weather

[9:56] In the space. So I heard of that

[9:59] three, four weeks before, there's no storm right? here

[10:06] so, very cold

[10:10] snow storm wind and now today wonderful weather, right? I brought good weather

[10:19] No, no, no, so

[10:23] the small storm can change the nature of space or not?

[10:30] cannot change, right? The space cannot change by good weather, bad weather,

[10:39] blue sky with sun shining or

[10:43] tornado (oh you don't have to tornado right? Hurricane? No). Sometimes it's not storm

[10:53] This cannot change the nature of space, space always free always

[11:01] present

[11:02] pure, always pure.

[11:04] So the awareness

[11:06] is just like that.

[11:08] And this awareness is

[11:12] behind of all the thought,

[11:14] emotion,

[11:15] perception, feeling, so of course,

[11:19] behind our panic or so,

[11:21] panic is just like snow storm.

[11:25] Five or six weeks before, we have snow storm, right?

[11:26] weeks before we have snow storm, right?

[11:31] So I remember all these teachings,

[11:34] so then I decided to

[11:37] to say "welcome

[11:40] Really welcome" from my heart to my panic. I

[11:46] thought "Ok, now

[11:48] from now on I'm going to learn

[11:51] how to live it my panic.

[11:55] Not try to get it up, not try to block

[12:00] not try to fight".

[12:04] So I sat in my room, because I cannot join guru practice we have everyday,

[12:10] two hours of group practice, morning one hour,

[12:14] evening or something like that. So when I join group practice my panic become worse, so I stay alone in my room and

[12:21] really welcome my panic staying awareness

[12:26] After few days later

[12:28] Me and my panic become very good friend

[12:32] I'm I'm feeling kind of like exciting when the panic comes

[12:36] The symptom is there

[12:39] You know from here heart beats faster. Boom

[12:44] and then tight here get dizzy sweating and

[12:50] Feeling of like

[12:53] When you're in the aeroplane, then the aeroplane face

[12:58] Facing the turbulence like this whew like that right feeling like that, but but it doesn't bother me

[13:06] normally

[13:08] When the before panic is almost going to start I feel panic or panic

[13:16] No, it's a coming again. What shall i do. meditate.... breathing...

[13:23] It doesn't work

[13:25] Now, ...Halo, Okay, Come , come, come (welcoming panic)

[13:33] Try it and Oh interesting. awareness still there,

[13:38] continue awareness..ok

[13:44] So very interesting feeling

[13:48] then

[13:50] Then I can able to join guru practice

[13:53] There was wonderful

[13:55] And after few weeks later

[13:57] Me and my panic become good friend

[14:01] Then something happens

[14:03] Something bad habits. Should I tell you bad news?

[14:07] Not a happy ending

[14:10] It's okay bad ending

[14:13] No problem. So the very bad ending is after few weeks later

[14:20] Panic says goodbye

[14:24] Me and my panic become very good friend now

[14:27] When panic doesn't have good heart, super bye, you know

[14:31] and panic gone

[14:34] So I miss my panic

[14:37] Panic become my teacher, my friend

[14:41] my support for my meditation

[14:44] So I learn a lot from my panic actually today. I'm here maybe because of my panic

[14:51] And I really believe this meditation Technic changed my life. So

[14:56] I believe that can sense other if it was a life

[14:59] So this life I've been teaching meditation all the time not higher I have passion

[15:05] okay, so now

[15:07] my

[15:08] story about how to learn meditations finish

[15:12] so now to choice

[15:17] How to meditate first or practice first

[15:24] How to first, raise your hand

[15:28] Hmm, practice or you don't like to practice

[15:36] Okay, so how to meditate first so as I told you the essence of meditation is awareness, right

[15:45] So, do you know awareness

[15:49] So how many of you know awareness raise your hand

[15:55] And how many of you don't know awareness raise your hand

[16:01] Okay, and how many of you maybe I know, maybe I don't know, raise your hand

[16:10] Okay

[16:12] Actually, I

[16:14] Think you all know awareness

[16:19] Should I give you an exam or not?

[16:24] Yes, so those who says I know awareness, of course, you know, so you pass

[16:35] And

[16:37] Those who says I don't know awareness

[16:42] Do you know you don't know awareness or no?

[16:46] Those who range those who raise your hand saying that I don't know when it's right

[16:51] So, do you know that you don't know awareness?

[16:55] Yeah, that's obvious

[16:58] So if you know you do more awareness and that is the awareness

[17:05] So those who says I don't know awareness meaning, you know events so you also pass

[17:13] and

[17:15] Those who says maybe I know maybe I don't know, right?

[17:19] Not sure

[17:21] Do you know you're not sure?

[17:26] Do you know you're not sure so there's also events

[17:31] So you also pass

[17:34] so actually all of your pass so

[17:38] Congratulation

[17:44] So now

[17:47] No ...Awareness essence of meditation. What is the essence of meditation?

[17:54] Awareness and you know awareness, right?

[17:58] Those who know awareness, you know awareness. Those who don't know awareness. (actually) You also know awareness

[18:05] Those are those who not sure, you (also) know awareness

[18:09] so as I mentioned before

[18:12] Awareness it's like space isn't it the space?

[18:18] Cannot be changed by

[18:20] cloud

[18:22] beautiful cloud

[18:23] ugly cloud

[18:25] dark

[18:26] Bright, it doesn't change. It's always there

[18:30] So now you prove that

[18:35] The awareness is always there whether you know, whether you don't know whether your doubt

[18:43] Whether you're not sure

[18:44] It doesn't change the awareness

[18:48] So awareness always present always there and always pure

[18:56] So

[18:57] therefore for the meditation

[18:59] It doesn't matter

[19:02] good feeling like

[19:04] blue sky with sun shining or it doesn't make

[19:09] obscured by bad feeling like snowstorm

[19:14] or

[19:15] Doesn't change

[19:17] like mist

[19:19] temperature laid out

[19:21] So they all line awareness

[19:23] Okay

[19:25] okay, so

[19:27] Now the problem is we have one big problem

[19:34] So the problem is

[19:40] Should I tell you the problem or

[19:44] You you want to find problem by yourself or should I tell you if you find by yourself is better actually

[19:52] Quite difficult, but it will stays with you

[19:56] But if I tell you you understand then after a while you forget

[20:01] So which one better you want to find by yourself? What should I tell you?

[20:10] So if I tell you raise your hand, okay

[20:15] You want to find by yourself raise your head

[20:18] Okay more want to find by yourself? Okay good

[20:21] So for that I will give you five minutes of discussion time. No, no no, no

[20:29] So the discussion topic is

[20:33] Essence of meditation. What is the essence of meditation?

[20:36] Awareness, so what is awareness just

[20:42] Like space right for the experiential voice awareness meaning knowing

[20:49] You knows what you're thinking what you're feeling what you are doing

[20:57] What are you seeing

[20:58] What you're hearing, so just knowing no pure noise

[21:04] So there's awareness

[21:06] So you all have awareness all the time?

[21:10] Before you learn meditation you have awareness, right?

[21:15] so the essence of meditation is

[21:20] awareness and awareness is with you all the time

[21:25] So now the big problem is then why you have to come here to learn meditation?

[21:35] Yeah, that's the discussion topic

[21:39] You have awareness all the time

[21:42] Then why I have to learn this awareness. I'm in the meditation meditation is the essence of

[21:48] Awareness then awareness will to me all the times there. What's the point?

[21:53] So what things change after learning meditation ?

[21:58] i have awareness all the time. So what meditation makes something change

[22:04] right

[22:06] so that's the discussion topic and you have to discuss this for five minutes and

[22:11] You can start to two people three people doesn't matter. Okay, you can talk to strangers. No problem. Don't be shy

[22:44] Okay, oh

[22:48] Can you hear me? so, how was the discussion

[22:54] Got the answer?

[22:58] More confused ? or Good

[23:06] Not many people more confused. Mm-hmm ...normally more confused better

[23:12] Anyone want to share your answer? and How many of you got the answer

[23:20] Anyone want to share your discussion anybody yes. Yes

[23:44] Microphone

[23:46] Thank you

[23:49] Yes, okay

[23:51] so

[23:52] You spoke about awareness of awareness and awareness of unawareness

[23:57] Some of us are aware that we're unaware and others are aware that we're aware and if we're aware that we're aware

[24:02] We're also aware that we run away

[24:05] Is that confused enough for you?

[24:08] and

[24:09] so

[24:10] for myself, I I like to be aware of my awareness and an awareness as much as I can and

[24:18] I I want you to teach me how to be more aware

[24:23] you dont need more aware

[24:25] because you have awareness all the time

[24:29] well when my mind wanders

[24:32] I'm aware of where my mind is wandering, but I'm not aware that I'm here.

[24:39] i want to be here all the time

[24:45] Is that a tall order, okay. Okay good next

[24:57] Thank you, thank you so here

[25:00] Yeah. Hello over there

[25:03] so what we were discussing actually four years ago before my daughter was born I was

[25:09] Meditating and I found my awareness was really like seeing the clouds

[25:14] Coming staying and going now. My daughter is two and a half years old

[25:19] I have a very busy busy life. I found like my awareness like

[25:24] shooting star all right is and

[25:28] That's where I am now, all right, maybe I'm just attached to that

[25:34] Being aware and I try to find some answer how how to continue

[25:40] Thank you

[25:42] somebody yeah

[25:50] Ah good one

[25:54] Coming I mean he's running

[26:01] Very fast

[26:08] Okay, the first lady there and then the second lady there

[26:16] Well to put simply to beware without fixation so we're we're of

[26:21] space-like

[26:22] Awareness rather than the wine has been constantly trapped in the clouds. So you you're saying that normally we have fixed

[26:30] Maybe a fixation but now we need to learn without fixation awareness. That's right

[26:35] So when this gets whatever there's cloud it tends to get caught up in the cloud

[26:40] so to be aware of the space like

[26:46] Okay clouds is the content of awareness I

[26:54] Think

[26:55] Meditation is for you know?

[26:57] We're already quite aware of certain things to varying degrees or aware about we're unaware and for me. I find that it's about

[27:04] Accepting why I'm aware of so sometimes those two things can be at conflict. But if I meditate they become more together

[27:13] Okay, yeah

[27:21] We were discussing how

[27:24] awareness is a mix between

[27:26] physical sensations and mental thoughts so is

[27:31] a

[27:34] Unity rather than a separation and so many people are aware of what they're thinking but they are

[27:40] disassociating with what they're feeling and this is I think

[27:46] the real

[27:49] Way

[27:50] to us X

[27:52] sort of a different platform where you're aware of both your thoughts and your sensations and the fact that

[28:01] Because these has evolved the the sort of

[28:05] Thinking part has evolved a lot more than the feeling part

[28:09] Especially in the world that we're living in that we're constantly thinking

[28:13] but really the feeling part is the most primordial part of our beings so to really

[28:20] Be aware

[28:22] we ought to be in a place where we have a

[28:26] Sort of awareness of both our physical sensations as well as our thoughts

[28:31] Okay, so up there and then here

[28:40] So

[28:42] It's thinking why do we why do we meditate we already have the awareness before after during?

[28:47] But we suffer

[28:49] So I think it's something to do with suffering and trying to find

[28:52] the cause of suffering or the root of suffering because it's it's there now in our awareness and I think

[28:57] Suffering is something we want to deal with so

[29:00] Meditation whatever it is is targeted at that. Okay, okay

[29:04] Yeah. Oh

[29:08] Yeah, sorry already, okay, so I came here because I

[29:15] Am seeing awareness as a state of mind to reach and

[29:24] Like looking for ways to how to not to see it as a state of mind to reach

[29:31] Rather not to see it as an achievement, but naturalize it

[29:37] That a clarification?

[29:40] Yeah

[29:48] So one microphone, please come down one microphone here. Yeah

[29:55] Is it

[29:58] To realize for yourself

[30:01] Well along the lines of the fool who persists in his foolish shall become wise and it's

[30:06] (pardon) to sort of run yourself out of steam

[30:09] Chasing something that is always like beating a drum in virtue in search of a future

[30:13] If so, you can come back and just know the thing for the first time basically to exhaust yourself

[30:18] All right, or to exhaust the seeker. Mm-hmm

[30:22] So you all , these questions. This is is the purpose of it simply of meditation. I will not give any answer. Okay?

[30:32] Questions in later

[30:35] Yeah

[30:41] When we were talking about this, so the problem is

[30:46] perhaps the conceptual mind that we

[30:50] Kind of in the school taught to kind of label things and give you know abstract

[30:57] you know the things we

[30:59] aware into concepts

[31:01] Labeling them and then those are very useful in our daily function to achieve things to solve problems

[31:08] But that also make our mind

[31:10] kind of lose touch of the

[31:12] reality and

[31:14] So I think so. We thought that's a problem why we already have awareness still come here to learn so

[31:24] Last one

[31:31] It seemed that the only time I ever

[31:35] Achieved a very deep peace in meditation was through going straight through the middle of some very painful

[31:41] Things so and I didn't be able to do that at will so I don't have great meditation

[31:48] But you need to look for one big pin pudding

[31:54] No, I just don't know how to work with them properly

[31:57] anyway

[31:58] the other thing that

[32:00] struck me very much when we were talking about awareness is I work with some people who have suffered very greatly cuz I'm a

[32:06] counselor and great traumas and they'd their awareness they could have

[32:12] well with all of us if it can happen to anyone the awareness splits off from the presence to such an extent that

[32:19] It really goes somewhere else

[32:21] sometimes

[32:23] people don't remember

[32:25] What they experienced it's like having two or three personalities

[32:28] So this is called dissociation and it seems like the opposite

[32:32] it's like

[32:33] When something is so painful, we can't keep our awareness with it

[32:38] so that's a theme of

[32:41] Staying with containing the pain the suffering seems to be as something's on my mind. Okay?

[32:47] Okay, good. Thank you for all of you

[32:50] so

[32:53] So there's many people give wonderful answer so the answer is about

[33:02] We have awareness

[33:04] but then we don't know how to keep awareness but here or we don't know how to

[33:10] make with be with

[33:12] non-judgmental awareness

[33:14] We have too much in the head cannot be in the feeling

[33:18] So and so on right

[33:21] so

[33:23] now how

[33:26] How can we do that awareness without judgment

[33:30] awareness connected with the feeling and awareness without the

[33:39] Loss into the cloud

[33:41] Right how we can do that so

[33:44] if we say normally I need

[33:48] awareness

[33:50] don't loss

[33:51] Be peace

[33:53] No

[33:56] Don't follow thought in emotion, it doesn't work

[34:00] This is become similar my meditation first my first meditation

[34:04] But I say hallo panic get out

[34:09] I'm meditating. Oh

[34:11] It's coming coming at me. No, Good no Good, you (panic) keep quiet. And the panic become louder

[34:18] So the most important point is

[34:23] We all have awareness

[34:26] Doesn't matter your panic or not panic awareness always there even while you have panic awareness

[34:32] Very pressing and free. Why are you having panic and

[34:37] Before you learn not only that before when you learn meditation you have awareness, right?

[34:42] When you never heard of meditation still you have awareness awareness born with it

[34:49] since childhood

[34:51] But the problem is no no, I will tell you them. Yeah

[34:58] Should I tell you

[35:02] This is a big secret, you know

[35:05] So you need to promise that you will never tell anyone

[35:11] Promise promise

[35:13] Yes, you can

[35:16] It's in my books, you know

[35:21] Okay, the secret is

[35:27] You all are very

[35:42] Secret

[35:55] Okay a secret actually there's no secret

[36:05] Okay, I will tell you a secret

[36:09] We

[36:11] Though we have awareness, but we are not recognized our own awareness. So that's that's the secret

[36:19] so

[36:21] There's no problem that whether we have this awareness or not

[36:26] There's no problem. It's just like space

[36:29] Whether we have space or not, there's another issue

[36:33] But the issue is

[36:35] We don't know space and we are lost with a cloud

[36:38] loss with thought and emotion

[36:41] So now how to be with space first. We have to recognize awareness and

[36:47] That is it to maintain there is a cognition and there's the meditation technique

[36:53] So we're alone eyes, but we forget we lost

[36:57] But again, come back pocket come back. Okay, so

[37:02] if you continue to maintain the recognition of awareness, that's the

[37:09] The result of meditation

[37:11] Then your mind become

[37:13] Completely free the freedom what we call liberation

[37:18] Tribal mine walkable mind mind become more calm peaceful

[37:22] Not just peaceful and calm not just peaceful and calm become walkable. So all these quality comes

[37:29] just

[37:30] release awareness and maintain that recognition

[37:33] so once you recognize and try to maintain the awareness that

[37:38] maintained the recognition then

[37:41] you will have a

[37:43] lot of discovery

[37:45] within yourself Wow

[37:48] One moment for you. Cool

[37:51] One moment. Aha moment

[37:53] aha

[37:56] Each time there's aha

[37:59] The awareness will open up

[38:03] Now our awareness narrow small and it's become less higher

[38:11] baby, baby easy to cry

[38:14] Like something slightly wrong not happy slightly, right? Oh, you're almost like Explorer Oh

[38:24] Sometime you become frozen or you almost become melt little bit hot

[38:32] Maybe outside don't see people don't see you but inside you're maybe crying aside

[38:40] Inside crying so

[38:44] Now our mind is like that so what I call monkey mind

[38:49] But as you connect with your own awareness

[38:53] Nobody's awareness is your awareness and you have this you have it it's with you. So once you're

[39:01] Recognizable open up and

[39:03] Then you don't need to blocked or in emotion. Not necessary

[39:08] Even you achieve thoughtless or a more emotionless meditation. It is not a good meditation

[39:16] You may become little bit like a zombie

[39:21] Maybe happy zombie. No

[39:27] So not

[39:30] not use

[39:31] Not not too much use of it

[39:34] So therefore what we call the real meditation you don't need to meditate

[39:40] You just connect with your own awareness. Okay

[39:44] So how to do them?

[39:47] So that we have to practice step by step so first

[39:53] We cannot really connect with the big awareness. So we have to connect with piece of awareness

[40:00] So for there now, we will do meditation practice. Okay. So now how to practice meditation

[40:09] First, please raise your hand like this, so

[40:18] Do you know your raising hand

[40:20] Yes, so there's awareness

[40:23] So knows that your just be to be aware of that you're raising hand, okay

[40:29] is

[40:30] there any

[40:32] sensation in your hand

[40:35] What kind of sensation?

[40:39] Cooling sensation raise your hand right in I'm sorry left hand

[40:45] Okay

[40:46] You know, there's cooling sensation, right?

[40:49] So there's awareness or warm or heat sensation raise your left hand

[40:55] Okay be aware of that so that is also awareness and

[41:00] How many of you there's no particular sensation in your hand, raise your hand

[41:06] Okay, if there's no sensation

[41:09] Just know that there's no sensation and that is also meditation

[41:14] Okay

[41:15] so now how many of you

[41:19] having pain around here

[41:23] Please yet

[41:26] Okay, do you know pain

[41:30] So that's the meditation also

[41:32] You're aware of the pain be aware of pain

[41:35] No need to look for Pleasant unpleasant

[41:38] It's also here

[41:40] Pain is unpleasant feeling so just be aware of that pain. Okay?

[41:46] So now put your hand down

[41:49] Feeling relaxed

[41:53] Pleasant feeling, right

[41:55] You know that pleasant feeling

[41:58] there's also awareness

[42:00] so

[42:01] now

[42:03] in the awareness

[42:05] Warm is ok,

[42:07] Cool is ok,

[42:09] No sensation also ok, pain is ok

[42:13] relaxation also ok.

[42:15] All these are in the awareness

[42:18] right?

[42:19] so you just need to keep connecting with awareness and

[42:24] done

[42:25] Doesn't matter what kind of sensation pleasing, unpleasing, neutral

[42:31] positive , negative

[42:34] virtual, neutral, It doesn't matter any kind of sensation. Just what do you have to do just to be aware of it, so

[42:43] That's the meditation,

[42:45] understand ?

[42:47] Ok, now we will do some more meditation exercise. So hold your hand like this:

[42:56] Any sensation ?

[42:59] Maybe there is sensation. Maybe there's no sensation. So be aware of whatever there in your hand, ok?

[43:11] Join both of your hand be aware of tactile

[43:19] And now rub

[43:23] What do you feel?

[43:25] Warm, right? so, faster

[43:30] Now heat, we'll aware of heat

[43:35] ok

[43:38] What do you feel? tingling, right? Be aware of tingling and cooling also

[43:53] Ok, now left hand put down, and keep your spine straight and

[44:03] And

[44:05] Bring your hand close to your forehead

[44:10] Almost touch to your forehead the hairs are touching (how do you call ? pores, tiny hair)

[44:17]

[44:19] It's almost touching, feeling of tingling or itchy

[44:23] Something like that, right? So

[44:25] Now, please close your eyes

[44:27] and

[44:29] Please be aware of any

[44:32] sensation in your forehead

[44:40] You know your right hand also put down continue close your eyes

[44:53] And continue to be aware of any sensation in your forehead

[45:03] Pleasant sensation

[45:05] unpleasant sensation

[45:07] neutral

[45:09] Even there's no sensation. It doesn't matter. Whatever

[45:14] there in your forehead

[45:19] To be aware of it

[45:34] And now please move from your forehead to top of your head

[45:39] And release muscles on the top of your head and

[45:44] Be aware of any sensation on the top of your head

[46:05] Now from top of the head to the back of the head

[46:11] Relax your pick up head

[46:14] Be aware of sensation

[46:32] Now please be aware of your face, entire face, relax muscles in your face

[46:42] cheeks, chin, ear

[46:47] now

[46:50] And to be aware of any sensation in your face

[47:11] Relax your name to be aware of any sensation in your neck

[47:31] Relax your shoulder right and left and be aware of any sensation in your shoulders

[47:57] Relax your back from upper back to lower back

[48:02] And to be aware of any sensation in your back

[48:38] Relax your chest and stomach

[48:45] To get to be aware of sensations in your chest and stomach

[49:09] Relax your arms right and left and be aware of any sensation in your arms

[49:36] Relax your legs right and left legs and be aware of any sensation in your legs

[50:04] Now please relax entire your body be aware of

[50:10] Sensation

[50:12] in your body from head to feet

[50:19] And

[50:21] If you cannot relax, no problem just be aware that you cannot relax

[50:29] So, you know you cannot relax that means you are relaxing

[50:36] So relax is allowed not relaxed is allowed

[50:45] Pleasant sensation is allowed no

[50:49] Pleasant sensation is allowed

[50:51] tightness allowed

[50:53] and

[50:56] Openness is also allowed everything is allowed

[51:16] Don't worry there that there's

[51:20] Mistake or

[51:22] Maybe you don't know how to do

[51:26] If you feel that your mistake

[51:30] The mistake is in the Venice

[51:34] So awareness is beyond mistake. It's

[51:38] always free

[51:40] It's genuine. It is pure

[51:44] Just like space

[51:51] So be yourself, don't worry

[51:56] You don't have to pretend to be somebody or someone just

[52:03] Be yourself be free

[52:14] You want to cry you can cry you want to laugh you can laugh

[52:31] If you cannot find awareness

[52:35] Then that is also awareness awareness cannot find awareness

[52:55] So

[52:59] There's no

[53:05] Need to worry that

[53:09] Whether you're doing right or wrong

[53:16] Right is in awareness brown is also in awareness

[53:22] So be free

[53:31] And be yourself

[53:53] Now, please open your eyes and

[53:58] Rest your mind just in bear awareness

[54:23] Oh, okay. How is it

[54:30] Easy or not easy easy raise your hand

[54:37] Not easy raise your hand, so if you feel not easy, you know, it's not easy. So there's awareness

[54:51] And how many of you confuse

[54:56] Raise your hand

[54:58] Do you know in your configs?

[55:01] If you can if you know you're confused there's also awareness

[55:05] you're connecting with others so you allow to be confused and

[55:11] confuse confusion become

[55:13] object Oh awareness just

[55:15] Like cloud another cloud

[55:19] So

[55:22] Thought emotion sensation perception everything can be in the wareness

[55:31] So therefore of course panic is one of them painting is like horican orchid, right?

[55:39] So hurricane come from space stay in the space, this is all back into the space

[55:48] Hurricane is changing by space cannot change

[55:53] So panic come from the rareness stay in awareness dissolve into awareness, but awareness doesn't change

[56:00] depending centric

[56:03] Right

[56:06] So

[56:08] Next time if you feel panic

[56:13] bring awareness to the body and

[56:16] special for the sensation

[56:18] so for the panic the sensation of

[56:25] You know how to describe

[56:28] Similar

[56:30] Great

[56:32] So I don't have to tell you

[56:35] And when you feel angry go back to the sensation

[56:39] body sensation

[56:41] When you feel worried

[56:44] back to the body

[56:46] when you feel

[56:48] the fresh scent and when you feel pleasant, so

[56:55] Aware a pleasant so what happens by awareness if you connect with awareness again and again

[57:04] automatically negative emotion will purify it and

[57:10] Your what we call we all have this basic goodness our

[57:15] Innate goodness

[57:17] basically will

[57:19] manifest

[57:21] So if you connect more with awareness compassion will manifest

[57:26] clarity will manifest

[57:28] joyful

[57:29] non-conceptual mind

[57:32] Although

[57:33] creativity your inner talent talents also will

[57:38] increase

[57:39] Just aware. Be aware

[57:43] The practices look like boring

[57:46] Right. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah

[57:50] They are

[57:51] What again be real?

[57:55] Today Isabella tomorrow also be over

[58:00] Next Monday. Oh, I

[58:04] Come here to learn meditation for feeling to help happiness. But this teacher

[58:12] Technique

[58:14] We are there how can this be aware and the happiness connection? You know, I

[58:19] Cannot find connection between happiness and be aware

[58:23] Many people ask me a question I come here

[58:27] To learn meditation to be happy

[58:30] But you teach me boring stuff

[58:34] Which is what's your breath

[58:37] Be aware of your breath

[58:39] and the

[58:40] Sensation sometimes there's not good sensation, you know

[58:45] So a

[58:49] Key point is for example

[58:52] When you see the river

[58:54] That means you're out of river

[58:56] Isn't it?

[58:58] If you if you have fallen into the river carry by river, can you see river?

[59:05] You cannot see it you

[59:07] Kind of feel like you're falling

[59:11] But you cannot see the river, right

[59:15] But when you see river that means you're out of river

[59:20] So

[59:22] When you see the panic

[59:25] You not become under control by a name

[59:29] But panic still might be there

[59:32] the symptoms do there so

[59:35] When you see the river, you don't have the block the river

[59:38] Isn't it?

[59:40] Let's give a continued

[59:42] But for you, okay. Hmm doesn't matter river is calm or clear clean

[59:51] or dirty and recall

[59:55] Turbulence it doesn't matter but if you fall in the river come realize it better

[1:00:05] Daddy and

[1:00:08] Travelens, you know not so good and special a river has balls, you know

[1:00:16] Our very own boulders boulders danger and if you ever become waterfowl

[1:00:25] You die, right?

[1:00:27] So normally these negative emotions

[1:00:31] Has a lot of influence

[1:00:34] for us

[1:00:35] Positive emotion is the better. Peace is good

[1:00:40] Panics no good because we are lost with it we have won with it we have won with this emotion

[1:00:46] We are we are lost in the river carry by river. So what erful is not a good idea

[1:00:52] But if you seeing the river

[1:00:54] That means you're out of River. So then what erful is great, right?

[1:00:59] Many people, you know take time off as boss to see their waterfall, right?

[1:01:07] Spend a lot of money

[1:01:09] To see the order what for?

[1:01:12] So you can see another wonderful

[1:01:15] Without spending too much money or free, you know

[1:01:19] So three inner waterfall wonderful in hmm

[1:01:27] So if you see the television you are not in the television

[1:01:35] Some like that

[1:01:38] So then slowly slowly you can find this awareness everywhere

[1:01:45] we thought with feeling with the emotion with sensation and

[1:01:50] You can see all this are coming in awareness stain awareness dissolve into awareness

[1:01:54] Awareness the basis always there and awareness the free

[1:01:58] Just like space

[1:02:00] so

[1:02:04] Therefore

[1:02:08] So therefore as I told you before

[1:02:12] the meditation actually we don't have to meditate just

[1:02:17] recognized awareness and

[1:02:20] Maintain that recognition with object now first object is the body special this sensation

[1:02:29] Many of you will know this miss understand about meditation some people think meditation meaning thing of nothing

[1:02:36] right

[1:02:38] consultation

[1:02:44] In Asia many people think meditation is like

[1:02:49] Breathing

[1:03:01] Keep quiet I'm meditating

[1:03:13] So

[1:03:14] so if Todd comes

[1:03:16] Become big problem, you know and you're telling yourself

[1:03:21] chanting

[1:03:23] And in the rest

[1:03:27] Should I tell you

[1:03:30] No problem meditation like this

[1:03:40] Please

[1:03:59] So looking for peace and peace you will say I'm busy you

[1:04:06] Need to make a point minimum

[1:04:10] Feasible not come or some some people they realize

[1:04:20] Yeah, so maybe I will teach you one very special meditation

[1:04:29] What is the special food in England

[1:04:42] Pasta fish and chips

[1:04:48] Any good vegetarian dishes

[1:04:54] But

[1:04:58] Chips cheese and beans

[1:05:02] Chips cheese beans

[1:05:04] Mmm, so I will teach you

[1:05:07] There is special meditation and this meditation called chips cheese beans

[1:05:15] Okay

[1:05:16] so 301 to learn

[1:05:18] Chips she's been this meditation

[1:05:22] quite long

[1:05:23] Chips and beans, okay

[1:05:25] chips and beans meditation

[1:05:28] so for the chips and beans meditation

[1:05:34] There's one rule

[1:05:37] The one rule is you're not allowed thing of this. She's

[1:05:41] Chips and beans not allowed thing

[1:05:45] You can pick up anything else

[1:05:48] fish and chips

[1:05:50] Also, okay you can think

[1:05:53] You can think about pizza humble

[1:05:57] Salad

[1:05:59] potato

[1:06:01] Whatever you want and you can even think about your past history future plan

[1:06:06] Every anything is okay except cheese beans

[1:06:10] chips she's chips beans

[1:06:14] Can nothing not allowed okay for one minute if you think of one second you will launch this meditation

[1:06:24] So we be prepared, so please keep your spine straight

[1:06:35] Please close your eyes

[1:06:39] Now relax your body

[1:06:44] And be aware of sensation in your body from head to feet

[1:07:02] Laughing you can watch the feeling of laughter

[1:07:12] Okay now the main part of meditation so I will say 1 2 3

[1:07:19] So when you hear 3 not chips cheese beans

[1:07:27] 1

[1:07:30] Two three matchups cheese beans

[1:07:48] We thing of this one second you lost meditation, okay, she's chip-ins one second you lost meditation

[1:08:05] Don't say that don't think about cheese cheese beans, okay?

[1:08:38] Okay done no, I just relax

[1:08:45] Okay, how is it easy or not easy easy raise your hand

[1:08:54] Not easy raise your hand

[1:08:58] Big problem

[1:09:01] Yeah actually is not easy when you say don't think our mind will think

[1:09:09] So when you say no

[1:09:11] cheese chips beans

[1:09:13] then we will think about

[1:09:14] cheese chips beans and

[1:09:17] many many different kind of cheese chips

[1:09:21] Beans will come and they become more clear more fancy

[1:09:27] loud

[1:09:29] Right. So when you meditate you when you say chanting concentration, peace

[1:09:36] Doesn't work

[1:09:39] So many people looking for I'm meditating and I need non judgement state

[1:09:46] So don't judge. Oh just come in on us. This is a meditation not judge

[1:09:52] Not judge

[1:09:55] So then just will come oh, I need to connect with heart no head one two three

[1:10:06] Then how to say oh I'm busy, you know, you have to make appointment then I will see whether come or not

[1:10:14] So for the event, it's not it

[1:10:19] Everything is allowed in the wareness. So it's not it is the real not judgement

[1:10:24] You don't have to meditate just is allowed, right?

[1:10:29] So then it's not judging

[1:10:32] That's okay not judges. Okay hat is okay hediye, so

[1:10:38] Everything's okay. So then there is the freedom

[1:10:42] There's non-judgmental and that is really connected with the developer of heart. The awareness is the deeper level of the heart

[1:10:51] so

[1:10:54] Then meditation has become very easy

[1:10:57] right

[1:10:58] so

[1:11:00] now I will teach you one meditation technique so sometimes we need to

[1:11:05] We need option because although meditation is very easy, but after some time we feel bought

[1:11:15] Again the sensation

[1:11:18] yesterday also sensation today

[1:11:20] gosh sensation again, I

[1:11:23] like the idea of meditation, but I don't like the practice of meditation so

[1:11:29] If you felt like that then need to change it's a technique need to change so another training is sound meditation

[1:11:37] So how many of you want to learn sound meditation raise your hand?

[1:11:42] Mmm, good for the sound meditation. There are two steps

[1:11:47] One how to listen to sound second sound meditation, okay

[1:11:53] So first how to listen to sound

[1:12:00] So, can you hear everybody if you can hear this sound raise your hand

[1:12:09] Mmm now you know how to listen

[1:12:12] So the first step is finished

[1:12:16] And

[1:12:19] Should I teach you second step

[1:12:26] Second step has the one big secret so

[1:12:31] Should I tell you the secret the secret is

[1:12:40] The secret is sound meditation is already done

[1:12:46] Finish

[1:12:49] You understand or not?

[1:12:52] How many of you not understand the secret raise your hand

[1:12:56] meaning

[1:12:57] Meaning is I ask you can you hear the sound you say? Yes

[1:13:03] So that is the sound meditation

[1:13:07] You are there oh

[1:13:09] so

[1:13:10] right

[1:13:11] The ear and mine both listen to the sound. That is the sound meditation

[1:13:20] Only the object is different

[1:13:23] The essen is same the awareness the awareness

[1:13:27] It's just awareness is the one

[1:13:30] but when you

[1:13:31] Use awareness with the body or sensation. Then it become awareness of the body awareness of sensation

[1:13:38] Now you're using sound and it becomes sound meditation and it it can be

[1:13:44] visual object can be smell

[1:13:47] test

[1:13:49] Sensation even thought any emotion also but thought emotion if you are new to meditation

[1:13:57] You have to wait for a while

[1:13:59] first you have to do this space this

[1:14:02] foundation meditation like

[1:14:04] Feeling sensation sound this one first. Okay. So now we're going to practice this sound meditation together

[1:14:11] So please keep your spine straight you can

[1:14:15] if you have

[1:14:17] back pain you can use chair like me as

[1:14:22] Long as if you can keep your spine straight little bit straight, you know, don't worry little bit like this

[1:14:27] The river like there the river like that. No problem

[1:14:31] So just a little bit relatively keep your spine straight

[1:14:35] Loosely they are loosely

[1:14:37] loosely keep your spine straight and

[1:14:41] Close your eyes

[1:14:43] So first relax your body and

[1:14:48] Relax meaning not release is also allowed

[1:14:56] And be aware of sensation sensation from head to feet

[1:15:12] Now please listen to the sound

[1:16:39] Okay now finish how is it

[1:16:44] So some meditations better or the meditation with the sensation fits better

[1:16:53] Sound better rescue him

[1:16:56] Okay body sensation dress your head

[1:17:00] Okay, so is it depends on the personality?

[1:17:04] So if you feel body is more easy. You have to begin with the body a

[1:17:11] Sensation in the body if you feel sounding some more easy, you need to begin with sound force. But even you feel sounds good now

[1:17:19] tomorrow

[1:17:21] Okay

[1:17:22] next day, so so

[1:17:25] nice day, gosh

[1:17:27] sound

[1:17:28] So you will feel you will feel bored and then back to the body you feel all nice. I

[1:17:34] thought mmm I have

[1:17:37] particular connection with Sun not the body, but it

[1:17:41] Sound is a better

[1:17:43] You will feel like that out of after few days later. So there's normal so you need to change

[1:17:50] Different training although there's many different training, but actually only one right

[1:17:56] What is the one?

[1:17:58] Awareness. So another important thing is awareness is important, but

[1:18:05] When you listen to sound you are not particularly thinking about awareness, right?

[1:18:13] and not need also because you

[1:18:17] Already recognize awareness. I told you

[1:18:20] Event is important

[1:18:22] The recognition of awareness important I already introduced you of Venice so that view stays

[1:18:28] back of your head back of your mind

[1:18:31] behind your heart the view and

[1:18:34] Then the motivation that you want to meditate with the sound that that's the meditate that's the motivation

[1:18:40] So this view and meditation change

[1:18:44] The quality of the lesson listen to the sound automatically

[1:18:49] So you didn't have to worry look for master rest awareness. I can hear sound

[1:18:54] but awareness we're

[1:18:56] Not necessary to look something extra

[1:19:01] Yeah, but then there's later the

[1:19:04] Awareness without object or something like this step by step. You can practice in the future

[1:19:09] Okay, so I think we finished today here the talk

[1:19:13] What time no, yeah

[1:19:15] so actually I

[1:19:18] Came to London

[1:19:20] My book publisher asked me to come here

[1:19:24] To say something about the book

[1:19:26] But unfortunately book is not ready yet

[1:19:31] and

[1:19:33] Even title isn't already

[1:19:35] But book writing is finished

[1:19:38] It's about the Bardo part Oh dead end time

[1:19:42] This will be the number fourth number of number fourth book

[1:19:48] fourth book

[1:19:49] fourth book

[1:19:52] Sorry about my English, you know

[1:19:55] Do you understand my English?

[1:19:57] Coach, thank you. So

[1:20:00] Next year will come out so the title not sure now so in the book

[1:20:07] There's a lot of story about

[1:20:10] while I'm going to retreat

[1:20:12] The first month I almost died

[1:20:15] there was a foot poison and

[1:20:20] So I had this wonderful experience

[1:20:26] So it's a really related with the Bardo type talked about this in the book and

[1:20:34] Next year

[1:20:36] It will come out. I think so tomorrow. I'm going to meet with a my publishers publishers here No

[1:20:46] Okay, so tomorrow

[1:20:50] Yeah, so now the session for Q&A

[1:20:56] You're going to reach for someone

[1:20:59] Directly

[1:21:03] Basically you can either use the mic to ask questions or if you prefer to

[1:21:09] Write your questions down and give them to the volunteers. You can do it that way and the volunteers will bring them down to us

[1:21:15] So if anybody wants to kick off

[1:21:30] Okay first here

[1:21:32] Yeah, I don't think you're in poacher. I

[1:21:35] Was wondering when that when attending to the feeling in the body regarding a sensation

[1:21:44] Sometimes a feeling can be so strong that it overwhelms you and then even if it's anger or something

[1:21:53] There's no way to stop it

[1:21:57] What is the difference between

[1:22:01] Being aware of it or

[1:22:04] Being stuck being aware of being stuck to it. Mm-hmm. Okay, so

[1:22:11] although as I mentioned before

[1:22:15] Awareness is always there never change

[1:22:19] but

[1:22:20] for the practical level

[1:22:22] We are not connected with the awareness at the beginning. Although we have or we are not connect with our own awareness

[1:22:30] so

[1:22:31] We need to practice step-by-step step-by-ste step-by-step

[1:22:35] So at the beginning when we have strong emotion

[1:22:40] Then we cannot aware we feel overwhelmed

[1:22:44] That's okay completely. So what we call there are four techniques

[1:22:50] kind of like four

[1:22:56] Four ways not for ways for

[1:23:01] For approach maybe

[1:23:03] So the first is I already mentioned back to the sensation

[1:23:08] there's the emotion meditation also, but now

[1:23:10] sensation back to the before the emotion meditation be aware of sensation is important without

[1:23:18] aware of sensation you cannot practice

[1:23:20] emotional meditation so sensation

[1:23:24] Be aware of sensation now. It's very important. So

[1:23:30] That's the first one what we call watch so there's four is watch

[1:23:35] Try something different

[1:23:37] Step back take a break for things

[1:23:41] So watch, you already know.

[1:23:44] Second. If the emotions becomes overwhelming, the sensation through stone, huh?

[1:23:51] Empty

[1:23:53] Pain hurt and

[1:23:55] blessing cannot breathe

[1:23:58] Feeling like I'm going to die now. There's many feeling so then you can stop

[1:24:06] Then try something different number two turn focus on sensation listen to sound to change your focus

[1:24:16] Okay when you listen to sound feels better

[1:24:19] Come back again. Okay

[1:24:22] Hold on. Okay. Stop listen to a song or watch your breath or even in the sensation in the body

[1:24:29] don't watch the

[1:24:31] pain area watch the numb area numb meaning maybe in the knees or hand or and

[1:24:39] the the neutral sensation

[1:24:42] neutral

[1:24:44] Pad part of the body where there's a neutral sensation you can aware of that. So this is the try something different

[1:24:51] number three step

[1:24:53] back

[1:24:54] meaning

[1:24:56] when I practice

[1:24:59] Meditation with my panic what I did is pay panic get out

[1:25:05] I'm watching you, right?

[1:25:07] so that

[1:25:09] motivation or that

[1:25:11] aberration fear fear or panic

[1:25:15] Sometimes what I call panic a panic

[1:25:18] it's stronger than panic and

[1:25:21] These are the behind

[1:25:23] Supporting the panic stay in the behind of the panic. So don't watch panic watch the fear of any aversion or

[1:25:32] the resistance

[1:25:33] or the belief

[1:25:36] There's some background belief

[1:25:38] So let's step back

[1:25:41] Number three and sometimes even you do that doesn't work then check a brick

[1:25:47] Most easy one, you know, you don't know how to do that, right?

[1:25:51] We should take a break sometime

[1:25:55] Do some physical exercise

[1:25:57] and special physical exercise is really good if you have a stone painting or depression or

[1:26:03] unhappy or too much emotion up and down do physical exercise and

[1:26:08] Read booze or sleep or sometimes tire exhausted sleep. So take a break

[1:26:16] so the four things but

[1:26:19] There's the one thing which is sometime what we call energy movement

[1:26:24] So and there's a movement is after some time

[1:26:27] When you meditate after some time, then you feel something on your head the heat comes heat

[1:26:34] Moving opening closing or from your spine this tingling

[1:26:39] Something like going up and down or from your stomach. There's one

[1:26:43] Feeling comes sometimes there's a vibration in the body

[1:26:47] sometime pressure from forehead throat heart center strong pressure

[1:26:52] So they had a sign of energy movement. So and as a movement has four things

[1:26:58] the physical

[1:27:00] sensation which is I just told you and

[1:27:02] Number the second is sensory perception see something colors

[1:27:08] shapes

[1:27:09] visions or hear some sound

[1:27:14] Music

[1:27:16] messages

[1:27:17] smell test

[1:27:19] So these are five sensitive perception and number

[1:27:24] Three is the sense of energy

[1:27:28] Positive energy here negative in here

[1:27:32] this

[1:27:33] Teacher has blessing good

[1:27:37] Energy that teacher has bad energy giving me obstacle

[1:27:43] Someone is you know controlling me or spying on me or giving blessing on me something like

[1:27:50] And the last one is emotion up and down

[1:27:53] so this

[1:27:55] Is not a bad, it's good what we call

[1:27:59] transformation or prana Bindu Nadi meaning prana many energy

[1:28:05] bindhu meaning like cells

[1:28:08] nadia meaning nerves

[1:28:10] So these are transforming when you meditate

[1:28:13] So the for the for the process then we have this energy movement

[1:28:18] So energy movement can be sometimes strong emotion comes filling up when you meditate

[1:28:25] Sometime good sometime more angry. I have a meditation to get dizzy, you know, I

[1:28:33] Suppose meditation is a benefit for me, but it may close for me, you know

[1:28:39] So but it's a good sign. You have to recognize this energy movement. That's really important

[1:28:44] If you don't recognize this energy movement, if you feel like something wrong with me or or I'm enlightened

[1:28:51] I'm special

[1:28:54] I'm crazy. Then. It's become problem. So actually, it's not problem

[1:29:01] Next

[1:29:03] If you could go back in time and speak to the eight year old you that was just beginning to learn to meditate and

[1:29:12] You could give them one piece of advice about

[1:29:16] meditation

[1:29:17] What would you tell your younger younger self?

[1:29:21] except the panic

[1:29:29] Someone there, no, okay. Well there

[1:29:35] Thank you and Butchie

[1:29:37] Well, I started meditation several years ago and in 2014

[1:29:42] I attended this 10-day Vipassana ten Davey passion a retreat and

[1:29:47] for me, it was really like a door opened and and it was really for me changed my life and

[1:29:54] Then my daughter came and my life become very chaotic

[1:29:59] now I felt as I said, you know the awareness is like

[1:30:05] it it's just I

[1:30:07] wonder if I have this attachment to you know, the experience I had before I

[1:30:14] Wonder how should I proceed?

[1:30:16] Thank you. Don't try to bring the past experience again

[1:30:21] so

[1:30:22] experience sometimes wonderful

[1:30:24] next day gone and

[1:30:26] Then some people they really like that wonderful experience

[1:30:30] So we try to bring back that experience. So don't try to bring that experience. You continue to be aware that

[1:30:38] Experien may not come again, but come in a different form

[1:30:41] different experience so

[1:30:44] That's really important. And another important is maybe you can

[1:30:50] meditate while you are having

[1:30:53] problem with your daughter

[1:30:55] You need to build up this habit habit

[1:30:59] so maybe

[1:31:02] You need to choose one particular event

[1:31:05] maybe

[1:31:06] whenever you are having

[1:31:08] Lunch or dinner or whenever you are having something with your daughter that time

[1:31:15] remember in meditation particular time

[1:31:18] Today also try to remember you will fail next day. You will fail fail is good if you feel more that's better

[1:31:27] So you're Chinese so in Chinese what you call failure is the mother of success, right

[1:31:35] Oh, yeah, sister. Bye

[1:31:39] Survive

[1:31:45] Thank you, so

[1:31:47] Try again. Try again. Then you will build a new habit. So once you

[1:31:52] success with that particular one event

[1:31:55] Then is equal to other habit also

[1:32:00] So you everybody can build a habit new habit so you can meditate

[1:32:06] everywhere any time under any circumstances

[1:32:11] Eight years eight or nine years before I came to UK and I own the television and I saw the advertisement

[1:32:19] about

[1:32:21] mobile mobile phone company and

[1:32:24] They said you can use this

[1:32:28] Brain or company everywhere any times even in the mountain?

[1:32:33] You know, so I thought this is very good advertisement for meditation. I

[1:32:40] Changed a little bit

[1:32:41] You can meditate everywhere anytime even in the city

[1:32:46] So while you're driving so in London a lot of one-way, right?

[1:32:53] So you go. Oh another one way. Oh, yeah. No no way

[1:32:57] So you have a lot of time

[1:33:00] Or traffic jam is the best

[1:33:04] Time for meditation, you know, you have to be in the gym for one hour

[1:33:09] So you will have good meditation session one hour

[1:33:14] So whenever travel gem meditate or you go to your home whenever you're open refrigerator

[1:33:22] awareness refrigerator refrigerator

[1:33:27] I'm going to turn it -

[1:33:32] Something like that so you need to build up habit meditate everywhere anytime. Hmm

[1:33:40] How do you practice detachment

[1:33:43] detachment

[1:33:44] so

[1:33:46] this practice you allowed to have attachment and when you feel attachment watch the sensation in the body, I

[1:33:54] mean to people and

[1:33:56] Materialistic things and just everything else in general not meditation

[1:34:02] Attachment about something or detachment. Yes

[1:34:05] how do work with attachment right so

[1:34:09] When you attach up the the people or money or whatever idea the sensation comes in the body

[1:34:19] Chips beans

[1:34:24] So there sensation so we have to watch the sensation in the body

[1:34:29] So beer just just use the sensation as object of the awareness

[1:34:35] Your mind sure mine. You don't have to say not husband. No attachment

[1:34:39] If you said no, it does not touch. It does involve much

[1:34:43] Some now attachment becomes stronger

[1:34:45] But if you really lost with it, you mind. Oh

[1:34:49] Then you will you will see them

[1:34:52] Like this, you know

[1:34:54] Try this. Everybody try this little bit like this cross your okay collapse one eye

[1:35:03] Okay, now look at this thumb

[1:35:06] So this is the object of your attachment. Okay. So now look at the tongue look at them. Bring close to your eyes close

[1:35:15] close close

[1:35:19] Clothes loss

[1:35:23] Now whole world becomes. Um

[1:35:26] You're gonna see only time so there's the attachment

[1:35:34] It's really small right

[1:35:39] That's the not only with them the

[1:35:44] Things

[1:35:46] even idea

[1:35:48] Anything so once we go in there and then we make it bigger

[1:35:52] And then we see the opposite. Oh, if I don't have this big problem. Yeah, I have this the wonderful

[1:35:58] Oh, I wish I hit him more. What should I do? You know?

[1:36:02] so

[1:36:03] We have to know this is a crazy hour of mine. We make mountain out of more

[1:36:11] More here, so

[1:36:15] The perception how create this

[1:36:18] attachment

[1:36:19] So first is a view second for the meditation just watch the sensation. You don't have to say yes or no

[1:36:25] Yes, what's what it's just watching it. Aha. It will helps number three

[1:36:32] Bring that inhabit

[1:36:34] the view and

[1:36:36] awareness into everyday habit

[1:36:39] So then you don't have to do anything without attachment. It will liberate by yourself

[1:36:48] This question

[1:36:51] Somebody yeah, yeah

[1:36:54] Is it not?

[1:36:55] Meditation awareness and sleep have become best friends. I tend to fall asleep

[1:37:00] Every time I meditate how do I stop falling asleep during meditation?

[1:37:07] So that's good if you

[1:37:10] Especially in a night if you cannot sleep then just meditate

[1:37:16] You can

[1:37:18] combine

[1:37:20] Meditation and sleep together so how to do that when you meditate then the sleepiness will come, you know sleepiness

[1:37:28] Feeling little bit like drowsy

[1:37:31] drunk

[1:37:32] Unclear like that kind of feeling right so watch that feeling

[1:37:37] We are aware of

[1:37:39] feeling of sleepiness

[1:37:43] Let's see, maybe I will have the sleepiness

[1:37:51] If you realize then Silla business will come

[1:38:05] No liver Vasilievich, so just feel this luminous

[1:39:08] Good morning

[1:39:11] So when you just relax then the feeling of sleepy

[1:39:16] Drowsy unclear just being with a feel it just feel it. Feel it continue to be aware of it

[1:39:27] If you are lucky

[1:39:28] the moment of you fall into sleep

[1:39:31] If you still maintain that awareness, then the slip will catch the awareness

[1:39:37] Then all the slip become meditation

[1:39:41] So you sleep one hour, you're meditating one hour

[1:39:45] but

[1:39:46] But you maintain the awarenes and a silicone and the moment of sleep if you mind go to the chips beans

[1:39:55] No cheese chips beans so then is normal sleep

[1:40:01] but but still benefit because at the beginning you are with awareness and

[1:40:10] Special if you practice the awareness

[1:40:14] When your mind going to the sleep?

[1:40:17] That really affect the subconscious mind the unconscious mind. So it is the

[1:40:23] That meditation is really benefit for you

[1:40:27] We all have awareness from childhood but it's very difficult to teach awareness or mindfulness to a child

[1:40:34] How can we at least start teaching them from young age? Yeah, so

[1:40:40] for the child you have to

[1:40:43] know how to

[1:40:45] approach them

[1:40:47] not like

[1:40:48] how to say

[1:40:50] giving order

[1:40:52] it doesn't walk and

[1:40:54] Then if you give too much order then they billable resist it

[1:40:59] next time when they hear meditation, ah

[1:41:03] Then no good, so you have to make it something like a reward fun

[1:41:09] Playful and don't meditate too long for Chaya only few

[1:41:17] Few minutes maybe us them for example in the bell

[1:41:25] So when the

[1:41:26] Bell sound going higher and higher us

[1:41:29] Kid, raise your hand raise him

[1:41:32] and then lower the volume of sound and then let

[1:41:44] And awareness the body maybe put something

[1:41:48] Object let keep lying down and put something on the belly and feel it that object maybe

[1:41:56] dinosaur or

[1:41:58] something

[1:42:00] so

[1:42:04] Feel something like that

[1:42:06] As a cancer patient, could you give me any suggestions or advice from the Buddhist field?

[1:42:13] How to chant every day or Sutra to do every day. Yeah, so

[1:42:20] if you have diseases you need to change the motivation, so

[1:42:28] The view and

[1:42:30] Motivation these two are the really important factor. So the motivation

[1:42:34] to

[1:42:36] Want to heal the disease?

[1:42:39] and the view is the

[1:42:41] Awareness is a boon disease

[1:42:43] so try to understand that and just whatever your

[1:42:48] the

[1:42:50] Feeling that the sickness which part a body you can scan awareness

[1:42:57] So when you move your awareness with the

[1:43:01] With the meditation with your body, so there's

[1:43:07] What we call Pranab into nadi they all are moving so the oxygen the blood

[1:43:14] the this the scannable a

[1:43:17] sense of healing also comes

[1:43:20] so it it will helps and special if you

[1:43:24] Want to do any mantra we use normally put a medicine mantra one hunter called IATA

[1:43:30] um, they can typically

[1:43:32] Mohab behind the other some of that I saw so you can look in the internet you can find

[1:43:36] So you can chain that one. Okay. Thank you

[1:43:39] thank you very much for all of you coming and

[1:43:44] This time

[1:43:49] Oh

[1:43:54] For this time Santa and all the

[1:43:59] Supporters volunteers

[1:44:02] Can you stand up all the volunteers no, no

[1:44:08] volunteers

[1:44:10] all the volunteers

[1:44:23] And

[1:44:25] This time the Jumeirah butcher is presence here and thank you very much for buses coming. Thank you

Instead of trying to push anxiety away or 'fix' it during meditation, welcome it with full awareness. Anxiety is like weather moving through space (your awareness). Maintaining awareness without fighting the physical symptoms—racing heart, tightness, dizziness—gradually teaches your mind that these sensations are temporary and not dangerous.
Mindfulness often focuses on observing present-moment content—thoughts, sensations, emotions. His teaching points to awareness itself as the stable ground. Instead of watching your thoughts, you're developing awareness of the awareness that watches them. This is more about recognizing what is always present than achieving a special state.
Mingyur Rinpoche doesn't claim meditation eliminates panic or cures psychological conditions, but rather transforms your relationship to difficult experiences. His own panic eventually stopped visiting during intensive retreat, but the deeper shift was learning to remain aware and unafraid while panic was present.
While rooted in traditional Tibetan Buddhism, Mingyur Rinpoche presents the core teaching—that awareness is unchanged by emotional weather—as a secular principle anyone can verify through direct experience. The metaphor of space and clouds works whether or not you hold Buddhist beliefs.
He notes that the first month of intensive practice felt wonderful, but benefits can also be built gradually in ordinary life. Consistency matters more than duration—regular practice, even brief daily sessions, trains the mind's capacity to remain aware during difficulty. The 'habit' builds over weeks and months.
He acknowledges directly that 'when something is so painful, we can't keep our awareness with it.' This capacity must be built gradually through practice. The training starts with smaller difficulties and expands over time. He emphasizes you need to 'build up this habit' rather than expect immediate mastery.
