What stories live inside you, waiting to be told? Some are polished into narratives you've shared a hundred times; others remain buried, surfacing only in dreams or moments of quiet reflection. The Stories We Carry is a three-day immersion at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, MA, designed to unlock the creative courage within you and transform the stories you carry into written work that matters.
Led by best-selling author Dani Shapiro, this intimate retreat brings together the practices of meditation and generative writing to dissolve the creative blocks that keep us silent. Rather than approaching writing as a purely intellectual exercise, Shapiro guides participants into the embodied roots of resistance—the fear, self-doubt, and self-censorship that live in the body and the nervous system. Through movement, meditation, focused discussion, and group sharing, you'll confront what blocks you and discover what lies on the other side of that threshold. This is Shapiro's only annual in-person retreat, offering both on-campus and livestream participation options.
Whether you're a seasoned writer seeking deeper authenticity, a longtime journaler ready to share your voice, or someone with stories pressing to be released, this retreat creates the conditions for breakthrough. You'll develop sustainable writing practices to carry forward long after the retreat ends, leaving with both new pages and renewed faith in your creative self.
What to Expect
Over three days, you'll move through a carefully structured rhythm of meditation, writing prompts, movement breaks, and reflective sharing. Each morning opens with meditation to settle the mind and connect with the body's wisdom. Shapiro then introduces generative writing exercises—practices designed to bypass the inner critic and access the raw material of memory and truth. Afternoon sessions explore themes of courage, persistence, and patience as they relate to your creative work. Small group shares offer both witness and reflection, creating a container of trust where stories can emerge.
The retreat atmosphere is both rigorous and gentle—challenging you to write deeply while honoring your own pace and boundaries. You'll produce new writing during the three days and, more importantly, develop practices and mindsets that sustain creative work beyond the retreat. Expect to leave with clarity about what you want to write, practical tools for overcoming resistance, and a renewed sense of possibility.
