What You Eat: The Body's Three Immigration Officers

At Lynchburg College in 1987, a spiritual teacher offered a meditation on the body's most underrated intelligence: the sensory checkpoints that stand between the world and the bloodstream. The teaching turns on a simple, startling claim—one that reframes how we think about both nourishment and self-deception. Most of our physical problems are caused by the food we eat. And the body has already built a three-stage inspection system to prevent exactly that. We simply learn to ignore it.

The Three Officers at the Gate

The teaching opens with an image borrowed from Gandhi—the three Chinese monkeys, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil—which Gandhi kept always on his desk. But here it becomes something else: a diagram of the body's own defense against contamination. When food approaches, it encounters three gatekeepers, each with its own jurisdiction.

First comes the eye. Distance inspection. The food announces itself visually—color, shape, presentation. "The eyes see that first," the teacher explains. "It's okay, there's no dust, nothing, everything is clear." The first officer clears it.

Then you draw closer. The second officer arrives: the nose. "God could have kept it right here," the teacher notes, gesturing to suggest the nostrils could have been placed elsewhere. But they aren't. They're positioned directly above the mouth—no accident. The nose approves or rejects based on smell. "Sounds good, tastes smells good," the teacher says, describing food that passes the second inspection.

Only then does the third officer step forward: the mouth, the chief officer. All three gates—sight, smell, taste—have now vouched for the substance. "You passed all the three officers now only then you swallow," the teacher explains. These are not aesthetic judgments. They are immigration officers. "Anything that goes into the country should be checked by this."

How We Cheat the Inspectors

The teaching then turns toward something darker: our deliberate circumvention of these safeguards. "But of course we are very clever in cheating the officers."

If food looks a little dirty, we color it. If it tastes a little off, we add more sugar. We wax apples, paint carrots, manipulate appearance and flavor to override the sensory intelligence we've inherited. "How often we see colored apples, waxed apples, painted carrots. These are all cheating ourselves."

The food industry has industrialized this cheating. But more fundamentally, the teacher suggests, we've become willing accomplices in our own deception. We know what we're doing. The senses have been built into the body precisely to catch us—and yet we outsmart them, or try to. We bypass the inspection stations through marketing, habit, conditioning, and the simple momentum of appetite overriding judgment.

The Consequence: The Big Officer

The teaching's final turn is the most consequential. "You can cheat all these people but not ultimately the big officer here."

The "big officer" is the digestive system itself, the immune system, the metabolic intelligence that processes what enters the body. It sees what the senses missed or were overridden. And when it realizes it has been deceived—when contaminated, over-processed, or fundamentally unsuitable food enters the bloodstream—it acts.

"When he realized that you have cheated everybody and came in, 'I don't need you, excuse me, he won't hesitate to throw you out of the country.' Right?" The metaphor shifts to one of expulsion. Inflammation, allergic reaction, digestive distress, chronic illness—these are the body's way of ejecting what should never have arrived in the first place.

The teacher frames this not as punishment but as protection. "See the way how is trying to protect us."

Diet and the Body's Design

The larger philosophy woven through this teaching is simple but radical: the body is not the enemy. It is a brilliantly designed organism that knows exactly what it needs and has built multiple safeguards to reject what it doesn't. Physical health, in this view, is not something to impose on the body through will or restriction. It is what remains when we stop cheating the system we already possess.

The teacher speaks of a clean, vegetarian diet as the foundation of physical well-being. But the teaching is less about prescription than about alignment—aligning our eating habits with the body's own wisdom. The senses are not obstacles to overcome. They are allies trying to protect us. The question is whether we will listen.

This was recorded in 1987, three decades before the widespread awareness of processed food, additives, and the industrial manipulation of the food supply that is now commonplace conversation. Yet the teaching holds precisely because it is not based on current nutritional science—though it aligns with it—but on an older understanding of the body as an intelligent, self-protecting organism whose warnings we ignore at our peril.

Where to go from here

Consider your own relationship to the sensory gatekeepers. When was the last time you let the nose or the eye reject food—and actually honored that instinct instead of overriding it? What happens if you return to the body's own intelligence, the three officers it has stationed at the border, as your primary guide to what enters? A clean diet, in this framing, is not something to achieve through discipline. It is what naturally emerges when you stop cheating your own best defenses.

According to the teaching, the eye inspects first (from distance), the nose inspects second (smell), and the mouth/taste inspects third before you swallow. These are described as three immigration officers guarding what enters your body.
The teaching suggests that most physical ailments arise because we override the body's built-in sensory safeguards—the three inspection points. We manipulate food's appearance and taste, cheating the officers, and allow unsuitable substances into our system.
The teaching calls the digestive system the 'big officer.' When it realizes unsuitable food has entered—having fooled the sensory gates—it actively rejects it through inflammation, allergic reactions, digestive distress, and other expulsion mechanisms as a form of protection.
The phrase emphasizes that the food we consume becomes the substance of our body and directly affects our physical health. Therefore, eating clean, wholesome food aligned with what our senses naturally approve of is foundational to well-being.
These manipulations override the eye and nose's ability to detect the true quality of food. By disguising food's real appearance and scent, we trick ourselves into consuming things our senses would otherwise reject—bypassing the body's natural protection.
Yes. The teaching advocates for a clean, vegetarian diet and warns against food that has been artificially manipulated or colored. It emphasizes trusting the body's sensory intelligence to guide what we eat, which naturally excludes heavily processed substances.
