[0:05] It's interesting the expression I don't
[0:07] like you, but I love you.
[0:10] Starts to resonate within me.
[0:12] >> [music]
[0:15] >> I mean, I don't think some of these
[0:16] people are people I would choose to hang
[0:19] out with.
[0:21] But they are what's on the plate.
[0:25] And because they're on the plate, they
[0:27] are what has been given to me as a gift
[0:30] by God in order to allow me to come to
[0:32] God. That's the way I understand the
[0:34] world. I understand that every
[0:36] experience that's presented to me is an
[0:38] opportunity [music] through which I can
[0:39] awaken. It's up to me whether I use it
[0:41] or not. That's my karma, but it's it's
[0:45] present there.
[0:52] >> Welcome to Here and Now with Ram Dass.
[0:55] This is episode 315.
[0:59] This was recorded at the Omega Institute
[1:01] in Rhinebeck, New York in June of 1986.
[1:06] And it asks this question in some way,
[1:09] maybe.
[1:10] What if everyone you encounter, every
[1:13] single person, everyone is actually the
[1:16] beloved in disguise?
[1:19] And what if our only job is to recognize
[1:23] that and see what stands in our own way.
[1:26] This is a radical idea, but this idea
[1:29] that every act between human beings, and
[1:32] I would also say between all beings, all
[1:35] of nature, has the capacity to help, to
[1:38] liberate, and to awaken.
[1:41] And when we see that, when we drop into
[1:44] that,
[1:45] nothing brings us more joy than to serve
[1:48] that life.
[1:50] So, if these teachings that come through
[1:52] today, if they stir something in you, we
[1:55] are offering something to help you
[1:57] deepen.
[1:58] Starting November 2nd through 6th, it's
[2:01] five mornings via Zoom, 45 minutes. It
[2:04] includes

[2:12] reading, reflection, no experience
[2:14] needed. Please come be a part. Go to

[2:21] Info is in the show notes.
[2:23] With that,
[2:25] let's dive in. Here is Ram Dass here and
[2:27] now.
[2:33] >> This is Ram Dass.
[2:35] >> [music]
[2:36] >> And the show is called Here and Now with
[2:39] Ram Dass.
[2:42] >> [music]
[2:45] >> Now, um
[2:47] in terms of the yoga of service,
[2:51] when you're with another human being
[2:56] in some relationship,
[3:01] where you're standing as to who you
[3:03] think you are and who you think they are
[3:05] has a great deal to do with almost every
[3:08] aspect of the relationship.
[3:11] It has to do with whether or not you two
[3:14] are going to get caught in some
[3:17] some uh drama that is going to be
[3:20] divisive,
[3:22] that is going to leave you both
[3:23] suffering.
[3:27] Or on the other hand, if you're looking
[3:29] at it from certain place, you can do any
[3:32] act with another human being in such a
[3:34] way that it leaves you with more energy,
[3:36] freer, lighter.
[3:39] And the way you do it creates an
[3:40] environment in which another person can
[3:42] end up freer and lighter through the
[3:44] act, the interaction between. And it can
[3:46] be as simple an interaction as changing
[3:48] a bedpan or saying hello to somebody in
[3:51] the office or
[3:54] It's so easy to keep helping and serving
[3:56] as something you do either you get a
[3:58] credential so you can serve
[4:01] or your parents you serve or these
[4:03] obvious things of serving and helping
[4:06] like cooking food or cleaning up but
[4:09] in actuality
[4:11] every single act between human beings is
[4:13] an act that has the capacity to help or
[4:16] serve or liberate.
[4:18] And finally that that level
[4:21] you see that all is service.
[4:25] Just all that.
[4:26] Then the word service
[4:28] like the word love loses its meaning
[4:30] because it's not something that you have
[4:33] a choice I will serve or not because at
[4:35] that point you have become service.
[4:38] Now I'm talking very far out talk
[4:41] and I want to make clear
[4:44] where the game goes because I think if
[4:46] we have the highest appreciation of what
[4:49] it is about
[4:50] we can sort of
[4:53] guide our course a little bit in that
[4:54] direction
[4:55] because it's so easy to get lost in the
[4:58] in the drama of everyday life.
[5:04] When um
[5:07] a girl who was with my guru Maharaj he
[5:10] was having trouble with uh
[5:12] a rather fickle boyfriend
[5:16] Maharaj he said to her
[5:18] "Don't you realize your only friend is
[5:20] God?"
[5:24] Now
[5:25] I realize that a lot of you when I say
[5:27] the word God
[5:29] wince
[5:31] or tighten. Not all of you. In fact, not
[5:33] even half of you but there are some of
[5:35] you for whom the word God is a real
[5:38] no-no.
[5:39] It comes out of your childhood and a lot
[5:41] of unpleasant experiences you've had
[5:43] with that concept. It also comes out of
[5:45] your fear that you're going to get
[5:46] caught in dualism.
[5:48] In worshipping something external to
[5:50] yourself.
[5:52] And I think when I say the word God, if
[5:54] I make it clear, then I don't have to
[5:56] wince when I say it.
[5:57] Out of empathy for you.
[6:00] Ramana Maharshi said, "God, guru, and
[6:04] self are one in the same thing."
[6:08] That the guru is a doorway you look
[6:10] through,
[6:12] and God is something that when you are
[6:14] in a human form in duality, where you're
[6:17] relating to children and parents, and
[6:19] friends, and politicians, and lawyers,
[6:22] and doctors, and cetera,
[6:25] there is a relational quality in the
[6:28] natural style of human beings
[6:31] with their minds and their senses. And
[6:34] it's very natural to relate to
[6:36] something.
[6:37] It's very hard for me to say, "Open your
[6:40] heart to the void."
[6:42] It just doesn't turn you on.
[6:45] The void isn't quite It doesn't have an
[6:47] emotional pull. And since the quickest
[6:50] way into the spirit is mobilizing both
[6:53] the mind and the heart,
[6:56] you try to work with things that open
[6:58] the heart as well as quiet the mind and
[7:00] focus the mind.
[7:02] And so that all these forms, all these
[7:05] forms of gurus, gods, idols, all of
[7:10] them, they're methods.
[7:12] They are methods. They are ultimately
[7:14] traps if you stop there.
[7:17] But the game of a method is to use it.
[7:19] All methods are traps.
[7:22] I mean, meditation is a trap. You don't
[7:23] want to end up a meditator, you want to
[7:25] end up free.
[7:28] I mean, you can end up a good meditator,
[7:29] and that's great for this life, but it's
[7:31] not going to get you free.
[7:34] And you can have been a great lover of
[7:36] Christ, but that isn't freedom. Finally,
[7:38] you've got to become Christ.
[7:41] Now, in most Western esoteric religions,
[7:44] that's a no-no.
[7:46] You don't think I am God or I am Christ.
[7:48] That's You don't think that. That's
[7:50] chutzpah.
[7:54] And the because they are primarily
[7:56] devotional, dualistic, esoteric
[7:59] religions that are based on the fact
[8:01] that the people they're serving aren't
[8:03] really going to awaken to their true
[8:05] self, and they are providing for human
[8:08] beings an emotional connection to
[8:10] something beyond themselves and beyond
[8:12] the world they know.
[8:14] And as such, it's extremely useful as
[8:16] long as you don't get frightened by it.
[8:18] So, that when I use the word God, I am
[8:21] not thinking of a grandfatherly figure
[8:23] with a stern visage
[8:25] as the Old Testament often portrays him.
[8:29] I am thinking I'm not anthropomorphizing
[8:32] God. I'm experiencing God as we've been
[8:35] talking these past few days about the
[8:36] law or the way
[8:38] or the harmony of things. I see God as
[8:41] all form.
[8:43] As the formless made manifest into all
[8:46] this form, I see that as God made
[8:47] manifest. I see God as the formless.
[8:50] It's a way that I can It's a short
[8:53] mnemonic a word for labeling that which
[8:56] is unspeakable. And the Hebrews,
[8:59] realizing that, spell it G-D. They It's
[9:02] like an unspeakable word. It's not
[9:05] unspeakable because it's so
[9:07] secret. It's unspeakable because no word
[9:10] can contain what it is.
[9:13] So, what I experience it is like saying
[9:16] I am talking about that vastness of
[9:19] myself that is below the surface, the
[9:21] iceberg we're talking about. The part
[9:23] that I don't know of myself, that
[9:25] deepest part of my being.
[9:28] That's my God self. And in Hinduism,
[9:30] they call it the Jivatman or that part
[9:33] of God that's within oneself.
[9:35] So, um if you understand that when use
[9:38] the word God, I don't anthropomorphize,
[9:40] although
[9:42] in devotional yoga, when you sing to Ram
[9:45] or you sing to Krishna,
[9:47] or you talk to Christ, you are
[9:49] anthropomorphizing that quality.
[9:52] And that's okay because it opens your
[9:54] heart and directs it towards somebody,
[9:56] and then you go through that somebody
[9:58] into that which is beyond. And it takes
[10:01] your emotional body with you, rather
[10:03] than leaving your emotional body behind.
[10:05] That's all it's about that I can
[10:07] understand.
[10:10] Now, um,
[10:12] when you
[10:14] uh,
[10:16] when you start to appreciate that
[10:19] God is everywhere, or the spirit is
[10:22] everywhere, then the question comes,
[10:24] "Why aren't I seeing it?"
[10:27] And then you realize it's the eyes of
[10:28] the beholder. It's which level you're
[10:30] choosing to look at.
[10:33] Or which level your desires are allowing
[10:36] you to look at.
[10:37] Cuz I said before, if you're too hungry,
[10:39] you just see what's edible.
[10:42] And it's only when you start to yearn to
[10:45] know your true self, or yearn to see
[10:47] beyond, or realize
[10:49] the ephemeral nature of all the stuff
[10:52] that you grab hold of in the world, that
[10:54] you start to turn your direction
[10:56] somewhere else. And that's why they
[10:57] often say that despair is a prerequisite
[11:01] for spiritual awakening. Meaning despair
[11:04] that everything you collecting is going
[11:06] to be enough.
[11:08] I thought the new car was going to do
[11:10] it.
[11:12] I thought when I married my beloved, it
[11:14] was going to solve the problem.
[11:17] I thought when we got the bills paid.
[11:21] I thought when I got when I grew up.
[11:25] I thought when I got old and got over my
[11:26] passions.
[11:29] I thought, etc.
[11:31] And it was one by one, each of those
[11:33] turns out to be in a way a hollow thing.
[11:38] It's beautiful, but it's not quite it.
[11:40] There's a
[11:41] great quote from Kabir. And this is
[11:43] pretty far out and I'm pushing it a lot
[11:45] today, but I think it's worth it.
[11:48] After all, let's not do the
[11:51] beginners course if we can go right into
[11:52] the advanced one.
[11:56] This is a quote from Kabir. It says,
[11:58] "Dancing is not for me anymore." I don't
[12:01] mean last night's dance. That's not what
[12:03] I'm referring
[12:04] It means the dance of life, of worldly
[12:06] stuff. Dancing is not for me anymore.
[12:09] The mind no longer plays the tune.
[12:13] What was empty is now full.
[12:17] The vessel of desires is broken.
[12:21] The gown of desire has become frayed.
[12:26] All illusions are gone.
[12:30] Parts enough have I played.
[12:34] I can act no more.
[12:37] Friends and companions have all forsaken
[12:39] me.
[12:40] God's name alone I now have.
[12:44] The restless ones are steady at last.
[12:49] All disputes are settled.
[12:53] By Ram's grace I have found my full
[12:55] reward.
[13:00] Imagine that moment when you are stop
[13:02] you stopped expecting that this next
[13:05] thing is going to do it.
[13:07] That the next time somebody says, "Oh,
[13:08] you're wonderful." or "Oh, you did that
[13:10] so well." or "I'm so pleased." or "Thank
[13:13] you so much. You helped me so much."
[13:15] And you milk it just for a little
[13:17] something.
[13:19] I watched my own ego. I watched as I
[13:22] would lecture and people would come and
[13:25] they would
[13:26] I mean, I sit usually higher and people
[13:29] look up
[13:31] and they listen to me and they pay money
[13:33] to come and listen to me. You imagine
[13:35] that?
[13:36] And then at the end, you know, and I'm
[13:38] trying to milk it a little bit of gee, I
[13:40] must be somebody. Imagine that.
[13:44] And I realized as you many of you know
[13:46] how empty that turned out to be for me
[13:48] cuz I tried it. I mean, I've been doing
[13:50] this for 25 years.
[13:52] And at first I would milk it and crowds
[13:55] getting bigger. I'm more somebody.
[13:58] You know, and people come up and say,
[13:59] "Oh, thank you. You've changed my life."
[14:01] And even some of you have come up and
[14:02] said that to me. It used to be that I
[14:05] would say, "Yes." And I would just get a
[14:07] little rush off it.
[14:09] Thank God that isn't happening anymore.
[14:12] Because I go back to my motel room and
[14:14] the rush would be gone.
[14:16] And I was just constantly going up and
[14:18] down on this thing and it wasn't like I
[14:21] turned it off cuz I couldn't stand the
[14:22] pain. It was just that it became empty.
[14:26] And when somebody says, "Thank you for
[14:28] helping me." I'm so pleased that we are
[14:30] journeying together. I'm so pleased to
[14:32] be meeting a fellow pilgrim on the path.
[14:35] It's such a gift to me to be sharing a
[14:37] journey with all of you.
[14:39] And that whole idea of I'm doing it or
[14:42] it's all it just doesn't There's no
[14:44] nothing you can you can That and a
[14:46] dollar gets you on the subway.
[14:49] You know, it just doesn't do it anymore.
[14:51] Doesn't do it anymore.
[14:53] And when that thing starts to fall away,
[14:56] what are you left with?
[14:59] At first you're left with despair
[15:01] because there's nothing that turns you
[15:03] on that much anymore because each one
[15:05] you're doing you sort of see through
[15:07] even as you're doing it.
[15:09] And some of you when I mention sex will
[15:11] get say, "Oh, well, never that one."
[15:14] But unfortunately, that one too.
[15:19] And finally, you are you are forced to
[15:22] dive for something deeper and once that
[15:25] happens everything in your life starts
[15:27] to change.
[15:30] And who you see is changing and who you
[15:33] are is changing. The whole panoply of
[15:38] of experiences, the meaning of
[15:40] everything is changing all the time.
[15:44] It's like the relation my father and I
[15:46] had. My guru said to me one day your
[15:48] father has a lot of money and I said
[15:49] yes, he's going to leave it to you. I
[15:51] said well he's going to leave me my
[15:52] share.
[15:54] My guru said you're not to accept your
[15:56] inheritance.
[16:00] And in one swell foop
[16:03] my relationship to my father changed.
[16:07] Because no matter how well, how kind I
[16:10] thought I was and how much I cared for
[16:12] my father, there was a little part of me
[16:14] that said well, I'll be I can be a yogi.
[16:16] What the hell, I'm going to inherit a
[16:17] lot later.
[16:19] You know, I can act like I don't have to
[16:21] worry about money now because I'll have
[16:22] it later.
[16:25] And there was a subtle way that was
[16:26] saying, you know, you're getting old.
[16:27] Don't you think, you know, it's time for
[16:29] you to move on?
[16:30] I didn't say it, but I mean there I
[16:32] couldn't help but feel a little bit of
[16:34] that. The minute he said that money
[16:35] isn't yours
[16:37] my whole relation to my father changed
[16:39] and we have been in love ever since.
[16:42] Because he sensed at a very deep level,
[16:45] never words, cuz I never told him that
[16:47] my guru had said that cuz it would hurt
[16:49] my father. Cuz he thinks he's leaving it
[16:51] to me.
[16:54] But I there
[16:56] there was something in me changed and I
[16:59] was not feeding the paranoia in him that
[17:02] goes with money.
[17:03] Can you understand that what I'm I'm
[17:05] saying?
[17:07] Is that too deep or
[17:09] can you hear me?
[17:12] I had wanted
[17:14] uh I had been growing up with the idea
[17:17] that my father would leave me money.
[17:20] And so there was a little part of my
[17:22] mind that had an expectation. And so
[17:24] when I was with my father, that
[17:26] expectation in a very subtle, really
[17:28] unconscious way, or semi-conscious way,
[17:32] colored the nature of our
[17:34] our play together, our work together.
[17:37] And that little bit just
[17:40] sent out a message, a very subtle
[17:42] message to him that reinforced the
[17:44] feeling he had uh everybody wants me
[17:46] only for my money.
[17:49] Okay?
[17:50] And so I was in a way reinforcing the
[17:54] paranoia in him that kept him separate
[17:57] and kept reinforcing his suffering.
[18:00] And the minute my guru said you're not
[18:02] to accept his inheritance, something
[18:04] clicked inside me. It was no longer my
[18:06] money.
[18:07] And there was something that changed,
[18:09] and I now wanted my father to spend all
[18:11] his money.
[18:14] And the there was a lightning, and he
[18:16] couldn't figure out who I was anymore.
[18:19] Because that vibration was different.
[18:24] Now, if you can understand that uh can
[18:25] you now understand that example?
[18:28] Okay?
[18:29] If you can understand that example, you
[18:30] can understand what I'm talking about
[18:33] when I'm talking about helping other
[18:35] human beings.
[18:37] Because if you think you're helping,
[18:41] you send a message to another person
[18:43] about them being helped.
[18:48] While uh on the on alternative, if I am
[18:52] just with everybody because you are my
[18:54] beloved in form,
[18:58] I would be with you, you would get a
[18:59] very different message from me.
[19:02] And I look at Mother Teresa
[19:04] working with the leper or this beautiful
[19:07] baby she's holding here.
[19:10] Mother Teresa is saying, I am working
[19:12] with Christ in all his distressing
[19:15] disguises.
[19:17] Now those of you that are nurses,
[19:19] doctors, lawyers, social workers,
[19:24] is that who you think you're working
[19:25] with?
[19:26] Look at your caseload.
[19:29] Think of all the forms that the spirit
[19:31] comes to you in.
[19:33] How many times do you see the spirit and
[19:35] how many times do you get lost in the
[19:36] form?
[19:39] How many times does somebody that walks
[19:41] into your office get categorized in your
[19:43] mind and you deal with the category, not
[19:45] the person?
[19:48] Even if you don't deal with a category,
[19:50] how many of you are dealing with the
[19:52] body, especially if you're a doctor or
[19:54] nurse,
[19:56] and not the psychology?
[19:59] If you're a psychotherapist, how many of
[20:01] you are dealing with the personality,
[20:02] but not the spirit?
[20:05] You'll see that your professional
[20:08] identity is a role traps you into seeing
[20:12] another person in a finite way, which
[20:14] traps them into being that person.
[20:19] As I've said many times, when I started
[20:20] to do therapy,
[20:22] I was so needful to be a therapist
[20:25] because I was sort of a phony therapist.
[20:28] I didn't have a clinical degree. I had a
[20:31] research degree in motivation, child
[20:33] development, but I wanted to do
[20:34] clinical. So I apprenticed myself to the
[20:37] clinic at Harvard and Stanford.
[20:41] And I was sort of a phony therapist, but
[20:42] I really had always wanted to be a
[20:44] therapist. Cuz I wanted to be a doctor,
[20:46] actually, but I wasn't smart enough.
[20:49] So, uh
[20:51] when I was in the office, I was really a
[20:53] therapist. I mean, with my tie and
[20:54] jacket and clipboard.
[20:57] And the person that walked in damn well
[20:59] better be the patient.
[21:02] Right?
[21:07] And in a way, I was rewarding them for
[21:09] being the patient and punishing them for
[21:12] not being.
[21:16] It's very interesting.
[21:17] I mean, I remember feeling angry at some
[21:20] of my patients when they started to get
[21:22] better.
[21:23] Cuz they didn't need me as much, and I
[21:25] needed to be needed.
[21:27] Because my identification was with my
[21:29] own needs.
[21:30] Can some of you hear that?
[21:32] Yeah.
[21:34] Now, as I've said before, who you see in
[21:37] your relation of serving is a function
[21:39] of who you are.
[21:42] That if you see yourself in a
[21:44] psychological identity as a needful
[21:47] human being,
[21:49] you will see other people as needful
[21:51] human beings, and you'll say, "Well, let
[21:52] us work out so that your needs and my
[21:54] needs are fulfilled." That's a straight
[21:56] psychological
[21:58] stance these days.
[22:03] If on the other hand, you and I I am
[22:05] recognizing myself as a soul who has
[22:07] taken incarnation in a personality and
[22:09] body that has needs,
[22:12] I walk into the room, and I meet you,
[22:16] and I am ready to meet you as a fellow
[22:18] soul in which what's our business
[22:21] together? Oh, today I'm the therapist
[22:23] and you are the patient. Okay.
[22:26] That just happens to be the way we're
[22:29] playing on the board today.
[22:32] You're going to have the top hat, and
[22:33] I'm going to have the iron
[22:35] in the game of Monopoly.
[22:38] And the possibility is that at another
[22:41] time, our roles will change. Or even if
[22:44] our roles don't change, we don't need to
[22:46] get caught in our roles.
[22:49] Most people think they need to be their
[22:51] role in order to be effective, and my
[22:53] suggestion to you is you will be much
[22:56] more effective when you are in your
[22:58] role, but not of your role. When you can
[23:00] play your role as a delightful dance, as
[23:03] a game, as a play. Not trivial game, but
[23:06] as a game, as a strategy, as rules, as
[23:08] roles, without getting lost in it.
[23:11] And what burns you out as a helper is
[23:13] that you get lost in your role.
[23:17] You get lost in thinking you are doing
[23:18] something.
[23:20] That you're moving from Park Place to
[23:22] Baltic.
[23:24] Around go.
[23:29] Now, to look and see the beloved in
[23:31] everybody, aha, a whole other ballgame.
[23:35] The minute you realize that what you're
[23:37] seeing
[23:39] what you want for yourself
[23:42] is to come back into the place where you
[23:45] are
[23:46] either the one or in intimate
[23:49] relationship to the one because you
[23:51] realize that there is where the bliss
[23:53] is, there's where the satisfaction is,
[23:55] where the deep happiness is, there's
[23:56] where the end of suffering is, then you
[23:59] start to look at your life and say, "How
[24:01] can I use my life in order to get back
[24:05] home?"
[24:08] And that is the meaning of an
[24:09] incarnation is to awaken out of the
[24:12] illusion of separateness.
[24:15] And the way of the heart in doing that
[24:18] is to see that one.
[24:21] God is your only friend. See that one as
[24:23] the beloved. And see the beloved in all
[24:26] the forms you look at.
[24:29] There's a beautiful poem that I've read
[24:31] for years that Bhagwan Dass introduced
[24:33] me to by somebody by the name of
[24:35] Carsley.
[24:37] It's from a Norman Crucifix of 1632.
[24:40] It's called I am the great sun and many
[24:42] of you have
[24:43] heard this on tapes.
[24:44] And it's talking about the forms God
[24:46] comes in and or the forms the spirit
[24:49] comes in and if you don't see it
[24:51] well, that's your problem is what the
[24:53] poem says.
[24:55] I am the great sun
[24:58] that you do not see me.
[25:02] I am your husband
[25:05] but you turn away.
[25:08] I am the captive but you do not free me.
[25:14] I am the captain
[25:17] you will not obey.
[25:21] I am the truth but you will not believe
[25:24] me.
[25:26] I am your wife
[25:28] your child
[25:31] but you will leave me.
[25:34] I [snorts] am that God to whom you will
[25:36] not pray.
[25:39] I am your counsel but you do not hear
[25:42] me.
[25:45] I am the lover whom you will betray.
[25:50] I am the victor but you do not cheer me.
[25:57] I am the holy dove
[26:01] whom you will slay.
[26:04] I am your life but if you will not name
[26:08] me
[26:10] seal up your soul with tears
[26:14] and never blame me.
[26:22] And you recognize this I suspect from
[26:24] Matthew.
[26:26] For I was hungry and you gave me food.
[26:31] I was thirsty and you gave me drink.
[26:35] I was a stranger
[26:37] and you welcomed me.
[26:40] I was naked
[26:42] and you clothed me.
[26:45] I was sick
[26:47] and you visited me.
[26:50] I was in prison
[26:53] and you came to me.
[26:56] Truly, I say to you,
[26:59] as you did it to one of the least of
[27:01] these my brethren,
[27:04] you did it to me.
[27:09] And this is one more thing I want to
[27:11] read about this level of the game. This
[27:14] is from a book called The Heart of a
[27:16] Gopi,
[27:17] which is a
[27:19] very devotional book,
[27:22] um in which
[27:24] um the young wife in this Hindu family,
[27:29] she uh
[27:30] she's a Gopi. She goes to the well and
[27:32] she starts to meet Krishna, this kind of
[27:35] playful form of God,
[27:37] and she falls madly in love with him.
[27:40] And she's always listening for the sound
[27:41] of his flute.
[27:44] Her husband's name is Nath.
[27:48] And she's explaining to him her
[27:50] predicament.
[27:52] And she says, "And now, Nath, mine ears
[27:55] are perpetually haunted by his voice.
[28:00] And all Braja, all the town, Vrindavan,
[28:03] has become but a mirror of his matchless
[28:06] beauty.
[28:07] Beauty so perfect that it may not even
[28:10] be dreamed of by mere mortals.
[28:14] And my heart,
[28:16] ah,
[28:18] there is no longer a heart in Sharmila's
[28:20] breast."
[28:24] There was a long, long silence.
[28:28] Then,
[28:30] "And what about me, Sharmila?"
[28:34] asked Nath very low.
[28:38] Her husband's saying, "If you love God
[28:40] so much, what happened to me?"
[28:44] She says, "Never, never, no, never have
[28:48] I loved thee as I do now.
[28:52] What?
[28:56] Ah, Nots, Nots.
[28:59] How difficult to understand.
[29:03] Well, I cannot understand, it is true,
[29:05] and I am afraid, Sharmila. I am so
[29:07] afraid.
[29:09] And shuddering, he hid his face within
[29:11] his two hands.
[29:13] Nots, said I solemnly, look deep into my
[29:16] eyes and listen well to each word I say.
[29:20] And if I speak but the shadow of a
[29:22] falsehood, may Krishna never appear to
[29:25] me again.
[29:27] And may Sharmila be rendered accursed
[29:29] forever and ever through all eternity.
[29:34] I say to thee this,
[29:37] did Sharmila not love thee with a love
[29:40] as pure as that of Sita for Ram,
[29:44] as fathomless as the ocean,
[29:47] as vast as eternity,
[29:49] never, never could she love Krishna.
[29:54] And if she did not love Krishna,
[29:57] never, no, never could she love thee
[29:59] with the love thou deservest.
[30:02] Deservest.
[30:04] It's not thy body that I love.
[30:07] It is thy soul
[30:09] and all the goodness
[30:11] and sweetness
[30:13] and strength thereof.
[30:15] I love thee for thy strong manhood, for
[30:18] thy virtue, for thy intellect, thy
[30:20] skill, thy tenderness, thy simplicity,
[30:23] truth, and steadfastness.
[30:25] And all this, yea, every single one of
[30:28] these qualities is Krishna.
[30:31] All is Krishna.
[30:36] I cannot imagine a soul
[30:41] that does not, at some level yearn
[30:48] to be the one, to return to the one.
[30:53] When I meet another person,
[30:56] am I meeting that soul that is yearning
[30:59] to come to the one,
[31:01] or am I meeting who that soul incarnated
[31:04] in as and thinks they are?
[31:09] Recently, I went to Nepal for the Save
[31:11] the Children Foundation.
[31:14] And I was going in the role of being
[31:16] chairman of the board.
[31:19] And I was meeting officials of the
[31:21] government.
[31:23] And I put on my blue blazer and my
[31:24] necktie.
[31:27] And I went to luncheon with General Rana
[31:30] and
[31:31] ministers and all these people.
[31:35] And I had some trepidation as I flew
[31:37] over there,
[31:39] thinking, "Well, it's pretty easy to
[31:41] stay in the spirit and see God
[31:43] everywhere when you're hanging around
[31:46] other people who are seeing it, too."
[31:49] You understand? It's called a satsang in
[31:52] Hinduism, or the sangha in Buddhism, or
[31:54] the fellowship in Christianity. There's
[31:56] words for that kind of
[31:58] people you like to hang out. That's what
[32:00] we're doing here. We're replenishing
[32:01] ourselves because we're safe mirrors for
[32:03] each other, because we are
[32:04] self-selecting who we are here.
[32:09] But I thought, "What's it going to be
[32:10] like when I
[32:13] get down
[32:15] and have to deal in hard realities of
[32:18] dollars and cents and hospital plans and
[32:21] structures and government official?"
[32:26] And I sat down to lunch
[32:28] with Elliot and
[32:31] And I looked at these people,
[32:34] and I haven't realized how deep my
[32:37] spiritual
[32:39] commitment had become.
[32:43] Because in the past, their power
[32:46] would have awakened in me my third
[32:49] chakra power response.
[32:52] I would have locked into
[32:56] it's me against them,
[32:58] which is the world that many of them
[33:00] live in.
[33:04] But as I sat down, I saw that little
[33:07] place in me flicker
[33:10] and then not grab hold.
[33:14] And I looked at them and they were
[33:16] fellow beings just like me on a journey
[33:18] trying to find their way through the
[33:21] morass of stuff the mind creates.
[33:25] And some of them were busy thinking they
[33:27] were General Rana,
[33:29] and some of them busy thinking they were
[33:30] Mrs. Gupta and so on.
[33:35] And I just looked at them and I felt
[33:37] such love for them.
[33:42] I thought, how can I I mean, I don't
[33:44] anymore, but I used to think, how can I
[33:46] love this person? I don't even know
[33:47] them.
[33:51] It's interesting the expression, I don't
[33:53] like you but I love you,
[33:56] starts to resonate within me.
[34:01] I mean, I don't think some of these
[34:02] people are people I would choose to hang
[34:05] out with.
[34:07] But they are what's on the plate.
[34:11] And because they're on the plate, they
[34:13] are what has been given to me as a gift
[34:16] by God in order to allow me to come to
[34:18] God. That's the way I understand the
[34:20] world.
[34:21] I understand that every experience
[34:23] that's presented to me is an opportunity
[34:25] through which I can awaken. It's up to
[34:27] me whether I use it or not.
[34:29] That's my karma, but it's it's present
[34:31] there.
[34:34] And I look at these people and I
[34:36] suddenly feel this incredible sense of
[34:38] love.
[34:42] And what's a general to do when somebody
[34:45] looks at him and loves him that much?
[34:48] And what is incredibly beautiful about
[34:50] these Nepali people is
[34:53] to without exception
[34:56] they responded with love.
[35:00] And that's just what Jai was telling us
[35:01] yesterday
[35:04] about the people in
[35:07] Española.
[35:11] That when
[35:12] we feel safe enough to keep our heart
[35:16] open in the presence of a power field
[35:21] we create an environment where other
[35:23] people can come out and play in the
[35:25] heart space as well.
[35:27] Can you hear that?
[35:33] But you see, if I'm identified with my
[35:35] needs
[35:37] with my psychology
[35:40] I constantly must be looking at
[35:42] everybody to say
[35:44] can you satisfy my need or if there's
[35:46] only one piece of tofu who gets it?
[35:51] See? There's a part of me that is
[35:54] constantly having to treat you like an
[35:56] object because I identify with my
[35:58] desires. When you identify with your
[36:00] desires, other people become objects.
[36:06] Now, I came into those meetings with an
[36:08] agenda.
[36:11] I came in to convince those people to do
[36:13] certain things that I think would be for
[36:15] the well-being of the blind in Nepal.
[36:20] The question was whether I identified
[36:23] with my agenda so much
[36:25] with my mind and that agenda that I
[36:28] treated them as objects to be
[36:29] manipulated to bring about the result of
[36:32] my agenda or whether I opened my heart
[36:36] and met them as heart beings and then in
[36:39] the space of shared of two souls meeting
[36:42] together then from there we looked at
[36:45] what business we had.
[36:49] I remember some years ago I was um
[36:52] uh when The Only Dance There Is was uh
[36:55] the Journal of Transpersonal had
[36:57] published it in the magazine and then it
[36:58] was going to be a book.
[37:00] And um
[37:02] I was called into the publisher's office
[37:04] um
[37:05] a man named Bill Whitehead who was with
[37:07] um
[37:08] um
[37:09] Dutton.
[37:11] Dutton?
[37:12] Um yeah. No, it wasn't Bill Whitehead.
[37:15] It was somebody else at Doubleday. No,
[37:16] it was Bill Whitehead. He was at
[37:17] Doubleday. That's what's confusing.
[37:19] Okay. And this guy I'd never met him
[37:21] before.
[37:23] And he was going to negotiate a contract
[37:25] with me.
[37:26] Now, publishers when they negotiate
[37:28] contracts, I don't know what you whether
[37:30] you know publishers, but they
[37:32] they are really weird. I mean they
[37:36] they smile a lot, but you got to watch
[37:38] everything, you know, and
[37:40] I come in this kind of you know
[37:43] nebbish spiritual seeker.
[37:46] You know, I don't know much about the
[37:48] business world. And I can see him
[37:50] looking at me and pegging me as just
[37:52] that.
[37:54] And I'm in a very nice space and I look
[37:57] at this guy and I love him immediately.
[37:58] He's a nice guy. But I see his mind. I'm
[38:01] very quiet. I've been meditating a lot
[38:03] and I saw his mind and I saw his mind
[38:05] saying, "Well, this is going to be a
[38:06] soft touch, you know. We'll get a good
[38:08] contract out of this guy."
[38:10] And I said to him, "Bill I said, you
[38:13] know, you and I immediately feel an
[38:15] instant rapport and it's going to be a
[38:16] very beautiful friendship we're going to
[38:17] have.
[38:19] And I said, "I've got to be very careful
[38:22] not to create karma for myself by
[38:24] letting you exploit me.
[38:29] So that in these negotiations, I'm going
[38:31] to screw you to the wall, but don't take
[38:33] it personally.
[38:34] >> [laughter]
[38:41] >> Because just because your heart isn't is
[38:43] open, because your heart is open,
[38:46] doesn't mean you become less than
[38:47] impeccable in the way you play your
[38:49] game.
[38:51] People feel somehow if I'm a therapist
[38:54] and I open my heart, it's going to cost
[38:56] me too much. Well, I'll tell you it's
[38:58] costing you a hell of a lot more to stay
[38:59] in your role and keep your heart closed.
[39:03] Because you say, "Well, I got to work
[39:05] today and then I do my stuff. Then I go
[39:08] home and there's where my heart is."
[39:11] Well, what the hell's that all about?
[39:13] Who were all those people you saw all
[39:15] day? Who was the person at the next
[39:17] desk? Who's the policeman? Who's the
[39:18] grocer? Aren't they your family?
[39:21] How did you decide that? Was it a
[39:22] biological thing that your parents did?
[39:27] I mean, doesn't it get interesting when
[39:28] you stop making those discriminations?
[39:30] Then you have special work to do with
[39:32] certain people.
[39:33] In the game sense, some people you raise
[39:35] children with, some people you pay money
[39:38] to.
[39:40] But is the only relationship you and I
[39:42] have is paying money? Is that it?
[39:45] Or are we just the beloved meeting each
[39:47] other through the vehicle of paying
[39:49] money?
[39:50] Do you get caught in your vehicle all
[39:52] the time or do you keep remembering the
[39:54] root the root game, the nature of the
[39:57] real game between human beings?
[39:59] If you can remember and keep that heart
[40:02] connection going with other people,
[40:04] each time you make a heart connection
[40:07] with another human being, it it's like a
[40:09] charge of energy that goes in and you
[40:11] end up higher than you started before
[40:13] you You know what it's like when you
[40:15] meet someone. You go around here and you
[40:17] look at somebody and you suddenly
[40:18] recognize a kindred spirit
[40:21] and you go, "Ooh."
[40:23] It's just like a little charge of juice.
[40:26] Well, why shouldn't that be with
[40:28] everybody all day long? Ah, some of them
[40:32] do think they are their roles.
[40:36] Now, the question is, do you need them
[40:38] to know who they are for you to get
[40:40] juice off your love?
[40:45] Do you need them to know who they are
[40:48] for you to get juice off the
[40:50] relationship, your love?
[40:54] If I look at somebody and I see Krishna
[40:57] in drag or I see
[40:59] if I see the spirit or I see my guru
[41:02] coming at me saying, "I'm going to get
[41:03] you this time." You're going to take me
[41:05] seriously.
[41:06] See, that's the game I play. I mean, I'm
[41:08] really mashugana. I'm really out there.
[41:10] Because I just deal with my guru. So,
[41:13] they say your only friend is God. Well,
[41:14] my only friend is my guru.
[41:17] And so, everybody here is my guru
[41:19] playing games with me.
[41:21] Saying, "I bet you can't find me in
[41:22] here."
[41:24] Hey.
[41:26] Because each each time it comes in with
[41:28] an incredible disguise saying,
[41:31] "I'm I've got a real problem. Could you
[41:32] help me?" Or
[41:34] "Or I really love you. Let's go to bed."
[41:36] Or whatever.
[41:38] Hey.
[41:39] And it's my guru and I say, "I see you
[41:41] in there. I see you. Oh, you thought
[41:43] you'd get me that time, didn't you?
[41:44] Yeah.
[41:45] You rascal."
[41:48] I call them many names, by the way.
[41:49] That's the most gentle of them.
[41:54] Now, it's interesting cuz a lot of you
[41:56] deal
[41:57] a lot of you deal with people in your
[42:00] offices, colleagues,
[42:03] people in hierarchical positions who
[42:05] believe me uh are very much identify
[42:08] with their role.
[42:11] And they aren't about to come up for
[42:12] air.
[42:14] You may have a supervisor that's
[42:16] immediately post Neanderthal.
[42:21] You know, a nice person. I mean, a
[42:23] person that's well-meaning and caring,
[42:25] but not an awake being. And you're
[42:27] trying to awaken, and you would like to
[42:29] hang out with other people who are
[42:30] saying, "Hey, you're going to sleep.
[42:31] Come on, wake up."
[42:33] Cuz that's the fun of satsang, but you
[42:35] don't always have that.
[42:38] Now, what happens is when somebody else
[42:40] takes their role seriously, they are
[42:43] saying to you, "This is reality."
[42:48] "This is what's real." And if there's a
[42:51] part of you that
[42:53] is flickery, you're going to buy it.
[42:58] The minute they If they come on that
[43:00] strong,
[43:03] like if there's a part of you that is
[43:05] insecure and needs power,
[43:09] and somebody comes along exerting power,
[43:11] you're going to go right into your third
[43:14] chakra and deal with them in power.
[43:17] And if you are working on yourself,
[43:19] you're going to notice later that you
[43:21] did that, and you're going to say, "How
[43:22] poignant."
[43:24] There I went again.
[43:27] And after a while, you see yourself
[43:29] going under to different kinds of people
[43:32] who present models of who they think
[43:34] they are, and who they think you are.
[43:37] Because everybody is telling you who you
[43:39] are all the time, by the way they meet
[43:41] you, every time they meet you.
[43:46] Like I go to the Stop & Shop in Boston.
[43:49] And I come to the checkout counter.
[43:51] And the checkout person says, "Hello."
[43:54] And then they go to kind of And then the
[43:56] hello isn't to a real human being.
[44:00] It's to uh
[44:01] uh
[44:02] It's to a hand holding money.
[44:05] And it's to a uh set of bundles in the
[44:08] making.
[44:10] And I just write there, and they'll look
[44:13] up at me and flicker at me, and I'm just
[44:15] looking at them. I'm right there. Say
[44:17] hello.
[44:18] Now, I say hello because I'm looking at
[44:21] Maharaji who's coming to me
[44:24] as a checkout person.
[44:28] Now, the person may go right back to
[44:31] their numbers and then say $22, and I
[44:33] hand them the money and get the change,
[44:35] and they never noticed that.
[44:38] What happened to me?
[44:40] If my relation to Maharaji needed them
[44:43] to affirm it,
[44:45] I'm going to be crushed.
[44:48] But my relation's with Maharaji.
[44:52] And Maharaji's coming in a form that I
[44:54] must appreciate the form. Not must, but
[44:56] I do appreciate the form.
[44:59] Because God comes in an infinite variety
[45:01] of forms. How could you not appreciate
[45:03] them all?
[45:06] The minute you don't identify with your
[45:08] form, you don't have to judge other
[45:10] forms, as I said the other day.
[45:13] You can just appreciate them.
[45:16] And sometimes the checkout girl or guy
[45:19] will look at me
[45:21] and realize that I am responding to them
[45:24] as if they are real.
[45:27] As if there's a real being in there.
[45:29] Which is not usually the case for them.
[45:32] Or not always the case for them.
[45:34] And what's fun is at least 50% of the
[45:38] time, they're right there.
[45:41] They come alive at that moment.
[45:44] And there's nothing for us to do other
[45:45] than exchange the money and say
[45:49] the rather overused have a good day.
[45:52] You, too.
[45:53] But somehow when you say it, you're
[45:55] saying it.
[45:57] You're saying it. Have a good day. You
[45:59] know, I mean, it really you really want
[46:00] them to have a good day.
[46:04] So, when you can hear this, you see that
[46:07] who you serve, who you think you're
[46:09] serving, determines what you get back
[46:14] from the service you do.
[46:16] If you're satisfied with the money,
[46:18] that's what you'll get, the money.
[46:21] And the money will come and go.
[46:25] If you are satisfied with the accolades,
[46:28] with the thank you very much, you've
[46:29] helped me a lot, that's what you'll get,
[46:31] and believe me, it'll be empty later on.
[46:34] When you open your coffers, it will have
[46:36] all turned into slush, as
[46:39] the poem say.
[46:43] But if the reward is just staying in
[46:46] love,
[46:47] staying in the place of love,
[46:50] and you keep cultivating it in yourself,
[46:52] it's like bringing yourself always up to
[46:53] your fourth chakra.
[46:55] Just bringing yourself into love all the
[46:57] time.
[46:58] And you practice with everybody you
[47:00] meet, and the ones that catch you are
[47:02] the ones you love, because that's
[47:03] Maharajji really getting you.
[47:06] And sometimes you don't even realize
[47:07] they caught you, they caught you so bad
[47:09] till later on when you're meditating.
[47:11] And it starts to come up, and you say,
[47:12] "Oh, wow, did that person get me?"
[47:16] Somebody comes along and they say,
[47:19] they awaken lust,
[47:21] and you go from I love you to I want
[47:23] you.
[47:24] Right?
[47:27] Somebody comes to you who are looking I
[47:29] love, and somebody says, "Well, I just
[47:31] happen to have a million dollars I'm
[47:32] trying to give away." And suddenly you
[47:33] go from love to desire, I want the
[47:36] money.
[47:37] And your smile turns from the smile of
[47:39] joy to the smile of manipulation.
[47:43] Yuck. Ooh, God.
[47:47] I mean, I do it all the time, so believe
[47:49] me, I I know of what I'm speaking.
[47:57] Now, it's interesting,
[47:59] when you are in love with somebody
[48:03] have you ever noticed how a lot of the
[48:05] qualities that you thought were really
[48:08] you like I I hear people say
[48:12] oh God getting up in the morning is such
[48:14] a drag I hate it God and I just don't
[48:17] want to talk to anybody and I just want
[48:19] my cup of coffee and uh
[48:23] you know that feeling okay
[48:26] and then that person falls in love
[48:30] suddenly there they are bringing
[48:32] breakfast in bed with a flower to
[48:35] somebody in the morning I mean who could
[48:37] that be it's not me
[48:40] it's not gruff old me
[48:43] it's very bizarre how when the heart
[48:45] opens you would like your beloved to be
[48:48] happy just like you feel towards your
[48:50] children you want your children to be
[48:53] happy and you don't even give a damn
[48:54] about your happiness because their
[48:57] happiness brings you more joy than your
[49:00] own happiness done
[49:04] now can you imagine what it's like to
[49:06] love everybody that way
[49:12] now listen again to the quote that I was
[49:14] using this week
[49:16] Gandhi God Gandhi said God demands
[49:19] nothing less than complete
[49:20] self-surrender as the price for the only
[49:23] real freedom that is worth having
[49:25] surrender out of your identification
[49:27] with your role
[49:29] and when a person thus loses
[49:32] I'll use him this time loses himself
[49:36] he immediately finds himself in the
[49:39] service of all that lives
[49:42] it becomes his delight
[49:44] and recreation
[49:46] he is a new person never weary of
[49:49] spending himself in the service of God's
[49:52] creation.
[49:56] If you've seen the beloved,
[49:59] there's nothing that brings you more joy
[50:01] than serving the beloved.
[50:04] Is the beloved
[50:08] a mother and a child in Africa? Is it a
[50:10] blind man in Nepal?
[50:15] Is it a homeless person in New York
[50:16] City?
[50:19] Are they them or is that the family? Is
[50:21] the family is it the lover?
[50:24] Is it the beloved? Is it Christ in the
[50:26] distressing disguises? Is it Maharaji in
[50:28] drag? Which one is it?
[50:31] You pick it.
[50:33] Is it your higher self coming to ask
[50:37] you, "Can you love me here, too?"
[50:41] Every experience, every time you turn
[50:44] your head and look and see something.
[50:48] I had this interesting experience. I was
[50:51] with a friend of mine
[50:52] um in Goa in India.
[50:55] And we were there to smoke dope and play
[50:58] on the beach and all that sort of stuff.
[51:02] It was my Goa experience.
[51:05] Some of you know what that means.
[51:08] And late one afternoon, we were walking
[51:10] to get the last bus to go into town to
[51:13] have a Chinese dinner.
[51:16] In our luxurious It was sunny and warm
[51:19] and there were parrots in the trees and
[51:21] beautiful flowers.
[51:25] And we got near the bus stop and my head
[51:29] turned. I was just looking around and I
[51:31] happened to look down
[51:33] and there was a tiny kitten about this
[51:36] big
[51:37] with its legs flayed and its hair
[51:40] standing up on end
[51:42] with a look of absolute panic.
[51:46] Now,
[51:48] the person I was with is a very
[51:50] sentimental,
[51:52] very,
[51:53] uh, romanticizing person.
[51:58] Now, I could look at that cat and I
[52:00] could say, "Well, it's a cat and it's in
[52:02] trouble and it's an Indian cat and cats
[52:04] have a hard time in India."
[52:07] And that's the way of life and walk on.
[52:12] I don't know. I can just tell you what I
[52:15] was experiencing. I looked at the cat. I
[52:18] felt that heart go out and then that
[52:20] equanimity understanding of, "Look, the
[52:23] universe is full of cats that are in
[52:25] trouble. The last bus, I can hear it
[52:27] coming down the road."
[52:30] It's if we go for this cat, there's no
[52:32] Chinese food.
[52:33] I mean, I heard all that in my mind, all
[52:35] right?
[52:40] And for some, I don't know. I mean, I
[52:43] would say, I'd like to say it's the
[52:44] higher compassion in myself. I don't
[52:47] know. I
[52:48] nudged my friend and I pointed.
[52:52] And that was it.
[52:54] Not only no bus, no Chinese food.
[52:59] But eye droppers
[53:01] and milk formulas.
[53:04] We were planning to leave for Benares.
[53:07] We couldn't leave. The cat was too sick.
[53:11] Nobody in the neighborhood wanted the
[53:13] cat. They wouldn't even take the cat if
[53:15] I gave them money to take the cat.
[53:20] The cat cried all night. We held the
[53:22] cat. We rocked the cat. The cat puked
[53:25] and shat everywhere.
[53:31] Two weeks later, the cat died.
[53:34] We buried the cat and went on with our
[53:36] life.
[53:42] >> [gasps]
[53:42] >> What do you do with those cats?
[53:45] >> [laughter]
[53:48] >> Uh
[53:51] But it's interesting when my friend and
[53:53] I reflect about our trip, one of the
[53:55] high points was our experience with a
[53:58] cat.
[54:00] Because it pulled us both out of our
[54:02] preoccupations with ourselves.
[54:06] Took us to another level.
[54:09] I can just tell you that in these past
[54:11] years, ever since when I said to
[54:13] Maharajji,
[54:14] "How do I know God?" and he said, "Feed
[54:16] people." and I said, "How do I get
[54:18] enlightened?" and he said, "Serve
[54:19] people."
[54:20] I've tried not to hear that for years.
[54:24] But as I hear it more deeply,
[54:27] and as I really start to understand
[54:29] karma yoga, the yoga of coming to God
[54:31] through service,
[54:34] and I keep surrendering as Gandhi's
[54:36] talking about, just keep surrendering
[54:37] into it. So, it's not me doing service,
[54:40] which is that lesser role identity,
[54:43] even the mythic one, it's the other one
[54:45] of I am a being going to God, and what
[54:48] is my vehicle? My vehicle happens to be
[54:50] doing service.
[54:53] And I serve God to come to God. That's
[54:55] the way into God. There are different
[54:58] ways to come to God, and that just
[54:59] happens to be one of the ways, and it's
[55:01] the way I'm teaching this week, cuz
[55:02] that's my way. That's the way I do it.
[55:06] And the lesser one is
[55:08] oh, I'm serving. Like I pick up some
[55:10] dishes on the table in the dining hall
[55:13] that aren't my dishes.
[55:17] Now, sometimes there's a little thought
[55:19] in me of
[55:21] you know, maybe someone will see me
[55:23] picking up these dishes, you know, and
[55:25] the staff will see me, and that'll
[55:27] really show them what really
[55:30] that level of behavior is really about,
[55:32] and then
[55:36] that's one level.
[55:40] Sometimes it's well, I'm going this way.
[55:41] I'll take these dishes.
[55:44] It's another level.
[55:47] At that point you have just become
[55:49] service. You are just looking for ways
[55:51] to help your beloved.
[55:55] If you've got a pain, it's our pain.
[55:57] Let's do something about it.
[56:00] Thing you finally have to examine, which
[56:02] we will be examining more this weekend,
[56:05] is if you act that way,
[56:09] do you lose something or do you just
[56:12] gain?
[56:14] Because most people are afraid that if
[56:16] they open their hearts in life,
[56:19] it's going to cost them too much.
[56:22] And I really want to get you reflecting
[56:24] about the fact that if you don't open
[56:26] your hearts, it's costing you more.
