Medicine Buddha Practice: Reaching for Healing in Community

A Medicine Buddha session led by a community facilitator rather than its usual teacher turns out to be a close study in what a healing practice is actually for. Recorded on October 19, 2026, while Lama Rod Owens was away, the hour-long gathering was facilitated by René Rivera, who opened with an ancestor altar set up for Día de los Muertos, told a story about reaching for Medicine Buddha in the middle of a painful gallbladder episode, and then guided the room through calling on the directions, a silent offering of prayer requests, and a closing verse. The thread running through all of it is simple and hard to dismiss: the practice is valuable not because it promises relief, but because when the moment of pain arrives, the support is already there to be reached for.

What does a community-led Medicine Buddha practice look like?

The weekly sitting, as the session's own framing describes it, is meant to nourish healing, deepen spiritual friendship, and work toward abolishing the social forces that perpetuate harm, for oneself and for others. That last clause matters. The practice is not framed as a private wellness ritual with a devotional veneer; it is framed as a collective effort that includes the conditions people live in. When Lama Rod Owens is away, other practitioners step into the facilitator's chair, and this week that was Rivera.

Rivera began the way many community sessions begin, with an acknowledgment of the unceded land he was sitting on in Oakland and a brief, unhurried check-in. He also named the recording he had been listening to just before the session, a performance of "Remember Me" from Dido and Aeneas, and described it as feeling like "listening to an ancestor tell me how they want to be remembered." That phrase set the tone for the whole evening. The opening was less a warm-up than an invitation to treat the people who came before as present participants.

Why does an ancestor altar belong in a Medicine Buddha practice?

Rivera had set up an ancestor altar that morning for Día de los Muertos and brought it into the room on camera. He described a mandala-like arrangement of the names of his ancestors, the ones he had found so far, with "offerings of food and flowers, salt and water, many more things," and candles lit. He was explicit that the search is ongoing: "I'm always looking for more."

His framing of the season is worth sitting with. "It's a time to speak to and listen to our ancestors and to make offerings, remember them. Remember them as they want to be remembered perhaps." Rivera was also candid that his own ancestor practice has not yet reached the place where the connection feels fully tangible. "I keep reaching," he said, and then described a seasonal shift: "at this time of year is a time when I can feel those ancestors at my back." For a practice built on reaching, the admission is the point. Connection is treated as something cultivated through repetition, not something guaranteed by a calendar.

What happened when the body needed Medicine Buddha?

The center of the session was Rivera's account of a recent physical crisis. Years earlier he had struggled with his gallbladder, with many stones needing to come out, and he had worked to heal it rather than remove it, which he said he succeeded in doing. This time, he described the episode as the gallbladder "throwing stones," a process he called very intense and painful but time-limited. He had a full set of tools: moxa, herbs, and movement, which he described as getting the body to move a stone through a very small duct.

What changed the story was not a tool but a reflex. Rivera said that in the middle of the pain, without deliberate thought, he reached for Medicine Buddha. "It wasn't even like a thought," he said. "It was really just this arising in my whole being of this reaching for this resource of medicine Buddha and feeling like I'm just being met." He began chanting the practice's chant and reported a sense of flow, as if the chant were meeting the process happening in his body.

Two details deserve emphasis. The first is that this was new. He had spent what he called countless hours chanting Medicine Buddha, but he had not reached for it in a moment of acute need before. The distinction he drew was between an intellectual knowing and a tested one. "If you'd asked me I'd be like of course medicine Buddha is there," he said. "But to really feel it I really felt it in a new way."

The second detail is the comparison he made. Rivera set the experience beside reaching for a friend in grief and getting no response: a text unanswered, a person simply unavailable. The resource in the practice, by contrast, answered. "I think now having reached and been met I know that medicine Buddha is always there," he said, "that this resource of medicine Buddha is one I can really count on." It is a modest claim, grounded in one difficult night, and it is precisely why it lands.

How does calling on the directions work?

Around the middle of the session Rivera moved the room into calling on the directions. Participants turned toward each direction in turn and called on ancestors and other beings associated with it, moving from the north through the other points, up to the sky, and then back into the present moment, "right here in this body in this present." The sequence gives the practice a spatial shape: the room is not just a place where people sit, but the center of a field of support that extends in every direction. Rivera's own account of feeling the land and the ancestors as supports runs through this part, tying the ritual back to the place where the group actually sat.

Why are prayer requests spoken aloud and then held in silence?

The next stretch is the most participatory. Rivera invited anyone who had not yet offered a prayer request to do so, and the room moved into a series of spoken requests, each followed by a shared response. The requests were varied and specific: prayers for beings living with chronic illness, for people who had died, for the community to feel connected, for those who are struggling in ways they have not named aloud. Some prayers were offered for particular people to be "fully resourced and safe," and the session made explicit space for what Rivera called unspoken prayers.

After the requests, the group sat together in silence for about a minute to offer gratitude and practice letting go. Silence is where the practice shifts from naming needs to releasing them, and it gives the spoken requests room to settle rather than simply accumulate.

The session closed with a recitation of a prayer attributed in the transcript to Shantideva, repeated three times, dedicated to all beings and to the world "until everyone is healed." Rivera then offered gratitude to the group and asked whether the space was supporting people, a closing check that kept the evening tied to the experience of the people in it.

What is the lasting lesson of this session?

The most useful thing about this recording is that it shows a practice operating at two timescales at once. On one level, it is a weekly gathering with a clear structure: altar, story, directions, requests, silence, dedication. On another, it is a relationship that a person can test under pressure. Rivera's gallbladder story is not presented as proof that the practice cures anything. It is presented as evidence that, after years of chanting, the support was available when he needed it, and that reaching for it felt like being met. For readers who have practiced in a group and wondered whether it would hold up in a hard moment, that is the question the session leaves open and, in its own way, answers.

Where to go from here

If this session resonated, the practice itself is open to join. Weekly Medicine Buddha practice is available through the registration page at lamarod.com/deity. For more information and upcoming happenings with Lama Rod Owens, see bit.ly/MB-links. Those who want to support the teacher's work can do so at lamarod.com/donate. Whether you come to a sitting for the first time or have chanted for years, the session's central offer is the same one Rivera described: the resource is there, and reaching for it is the practice.

[0:01] Thank you so much, Eric. Thank you for

[0:04] being here supporting SA and always

[0:07] bringing in so much joy to our space, at

[0:11] least to me. Um, and it's so good to be

[0:15] here with all of you. My name is Renee

[0:17] Rivera. I use hehim pronouns.

[0:21] I'm on the unseated lands of the

[0:24] Confederated Tribes of Lon, the Aloney

[0:27] people in Oakland, California.

[0:30] >> [snorts]

[0:31] >> Um,

[0:33] tonight you may have heard the um our

[0:37] Valkyries here in the Bay are playing

[0:41] game two against the Atlanta Dream and

[0:44] so we are going to end

[0:47] by 5:00 Pacific time so that at least I

[0:51] can go watch the game. Um, the Valkyries

[0:55] are also bringing me a lot of joy and

[0:57] inspiration right now. I don't know. I

[1:00] saw at least one emoji from someone

[1:01] else. Maybe maybe this isn't the crowd

[1:03] for that. Um but um I'm very excited. So

[1:09] yes, thank you Lou.

[1:13] Go Valks. Um, and I just wanted to also,

[1:19] um, just name Jesse Norman, who we were

[1:22] just listening to

[1:25] as the singing, um, Remember Me from the

[1:31] opera Daido and Aneas.

[1:34] Um, as the queen of Queen Daido of

[1:38] Carthage

[1:40] and it's like her death song. And I was

[1:43] just really feeling

[1:46] that well the song but also just that

[1:49] particular recording is like feels like

[1:54] um listening to an ancestor and maybe

[1:57] listening to an ancestor tell me how

[2:00] they want to be remembered.

[2:04] Um

[2:06] yeah. Uh, so I was just actually this

[2:08] morning setting up my

[2:10] um my ancestor altar for Dia de los

[2:14] Mutos and um just wanted to particularly

[2:21] call in our ancestors at this time

[2:26] at this um as we are coming towards

[2:30] Dia de los Muertos Day of the Dead um

[2:34] Sen and many different cultures. It's a

[2:37] time to speak to and listen to our

[2:41] ancestors

[2:43] and to

[2:45] make offerings,

[2:47] remember them.

[2:50] Remember them as they want to be

[2:51] remembered perhaps. So, I'm looking at

[2:55] my altar right now. So, I just wanted to

[2:58] bring that into the space. So, I'm going

[3:00] to show you. Just gonna um turn the

[3:04] camera off for a minute and then show

[3:06] you the altar.

[3:14] Oops.

[3:18] See?

[3:19] Okay.

[3:22] Um, I have my

[3:25] um,

[3:27] it's hard to see in this photo, but I

[3:29] have like kind of this mandelola of my

[3:31] ancestors of all the names of my

[3:33] ancestors that I have found so far. And

[3:36] I'm always looking for more. I like to

[3:39] lay that out

[3:42] with offerings of food and flowers, salt

[3:45] and water,

[3:47] many more things. Got the candles lit

[3:50] right now. So just really inviting

[3:53] the support of the ancestors in our

[3:57] practice tonight.

[4:11] Um

[4:13] I like to share what's happening in my

[4:15] own medicine Buddha practice

[4:18] when I'm here. It's usually like

[4:22] when there's something interesting to

[4:23] share when I like to come and lead this

[4:26] lead this practice.

[4:29] Um

[4:31] yeah, so I just wanted to share a little

[4:32] story from my own practice. Um I had

[4:37] um just was going through a little bit

[4:39] of a um something with my own health

[4:43] many years ago, like 12 years ago. I

[4:45] went through a period of time

[4:48] where I had um

[4:51] Just having a lot of difficulty with my

[4:52] gallbladder.

[4:54] Many stones needing to come out of my

[4:57] body.

[4:58] Um Oh, speak up. Thank you, Clementine.

[5:02] I'm going to let me um I should have

[5:04] checked in on the sound.

[5:17] My output volume is at the maximum.

[5:23] Wait.

[5:26] Oh, input volume. All right, I'm turning

[5:28] it up. How is that sound better?

[5:33] >> That does sound louder, Renee. And

[5:35] there's also um we might just be hearing

[5:37] your laptop fan in the background.

[5:40] >> You know what?

[5:41] >> I had turned on original sound for

[5:44] something else and it's still on. So, I

[5:46] just turned that out. That should take

[5:48] care of the background. Um, because

[5:52] downtown Oakland has always got

[5:54] something going on. So, thank you for

[5:56] pointing that out.

[5:59] Great.

[6:02] So, anyway, um, just to share this

[6:06] story. Yeah. So like some years ago I

[6:08] had a lot of challenge with my

[6:11] gallbladder and um really wanted to like

[6:14] heal it not take it out and was

[6:16] successful in that which is amazing. And

[6:18] just you know the other day and I think

[6:21] this is just like another kind of

[6:23] healing cycle.

[6:25] I had like a um think of it as my

[6:28] gallbladder throwing stones. So it's

[6:31] like a very intense if anyone's been

[6:33] through it a very intense and painful

[6:35] but timelmited process

[6:38] and um and I had so many tools because I

[6:41] had gone through this whole like 2-year

[6:43] period of working with it some years ago

[6:47] but that was before I had the medicine

[6:49] practice. So it was just very

[6:50] interesting. I was having, you know, one

[6:52] night going through this intense and

[6:56] painful physical process and I like I

[6:58] got all my tools. I have like my moxa

[7:01] that I do and I have some herbs that I

[7:03] do and I could do things in the moment

[7:05] that really help manage and move. It's

[7:10] like there's movement getting the body

[7:13] to just move this stone through

[7:18] um a very tiny duct where it needs to

[7:21] go. So supporting my body to do that

[7:24] which I have a lot of tools around. And

[7:25] then there was just like this moment as

[7:27] I was just practicing, breathing,

[7:29] moving,

[7:31] um, being with this process that like it

[7:34] almost felt like

[7:39] without it being a cognitive process, I

[7:41] just reached for medicine Buddha. There

[7:44] was just like this natural reach in me

[7:48] was like, I need the support of medicine

[7:51] Buddha. And it was really something that

[7:53] came right up out of my body. It wasn't

[7:55] even like a thought

[7:58] um like a thought, oh, you know, this

[8:01] would be a time to call on medicine

[8:03] Buddha. It was really just this arising

[8:05] in my

[8:07] whole being of this reaching for this

[8:11] resource of medicine Buddha

[8:15] and feeling like I'm just being met.

[8:20] Like all I had to do was think of

[8:22] medicine Buddha and medicine Buddha was

[8:25] there with me in this like a companion

[8:29] in this

[8:31] um just difficult process that I was in.

[8:36] And um yeah, and so I was like chanting

[8:40] just bringing in

[8:43] the um the chant that we work with here.

[8:48] And I could just feel such a flow of

[8:51] support in my being in bringing this

[8:56] practice that is like, oh, I'm like this

[8:58] is part of my resources to now that I

[9:00] didn't have 12 years ago. I have this

[9:03] practice and

[9:05] and um you know feeling the way that

[9:08] medicine Buddha just showed up as a

[9:10] companion in that moment of difficulty.

[9:13] The way that the chanting felt like it

[9:16] was actually really meeting the process

[9:18] that my body was in like my body was

[9:20] just needing to go through this process

[9:24] and that the chanting was a supporting

[9:27] helping this movement

[9:30] within my own body.

[9:32] and just a very powerful experience. It

[9:36] was like I've, you know, who knows how

[9:39] many hours I've spent chanting

[9:43] um medicine Buddha and to reach for it

[9:47] in a moment of need was something that I

[9:50] hadn't actually done before. And just to

[9:53] feel how it was just right there for me.

[9:56] was um it's something hard to put words

[9:59] to but I just wanted to share like this

[10:05] experience and most of all I would say

[10:07] it's like this experience of reaching

[10:09] and this experience of being met and how

[10:11] often does that happen I mean I wish it

[10:15] happened more often

[10:17] but sometimes there can be a moment you

[10:19] know in a moment of grief I will reach

[10:21] for a friend and they're there you know

[10:24] and then sometimes there's a moment

[10:26] of grief or difficulty and I reach for a

[10:28] friend and you know I can't get a hold

[10:29] of them

[10:31] you know I text them but they don't text

[10:33] back or whatever it is you know they're

[10:35] they're away they're and then just to

[10:39] know like oh I can reach for medicine

[10:40] Buddha and in that moment medicine was

[10:44] Buddha was there but I think now having

[10:49] reached and been met I know that

[10:51] medicine Buddha is always there

[10:55] that this

[10:57] resource of medicine Buddha is one I can

[11:00] really count on.

[11:03] And so that was a very that was like wow

[11:07] like I knew it

[11:11] you know if you'd asked me I'd be like

[11:13] of course medicine Buddha is there but

[11:15] to really feel it I really felt it in a

[11:18] new way. So that was really like the

[11:20] experience I wanted to share.

[11:23] with all of you. The good news, share

[11:26] the good news.

[11:28] Medicine Buddha is there.

[11:34] Just have to reach reach

[11:38] call on medicine,

[11:40] which is what we will do tonight.

[11:44] Umh

[11:49] [sighs]

[11:50] yeah,

[11:54] as we move towards practice,

[11:58] um I've been, you know, as I've been

[12:01] feeling

[12:03] in this time of year, the support of

[12:06] ancestors,

[12:08] feeling the support of the land. I feel

[12:11] that right now. It's another place where

[12:14] it's like, oh, I can reach

[12:17] for the earth and it's always there.

[12:20] Um, I can reach for ancestors. I will

[12:23] say my ancestor practice isn't at the

[12:25] place where I just feel it like that,

[12:27] but I keep reaching. And at this time of

[12:31] year is a time when I can feel those

[12:33] ancestors at my back.

[12:36] um partly because I'm having them in

[12:38] front of me and I'm interacting,

[12:41] remembering and offering.

[12:44] So um in this

[12:49] I'm going to kind of invite you all into

[12:53] this process of bringing in

[12:56] the resources and the benefactors to

[12:59] hold our pack practice. And I want to do

[13:01] it in like a slightly different way than

[13:03] we usually do it, which is to call the

[13:06] directions.

[13:07] Um,

[13:09] and

[13:11] um, so this is a way that I practice

[13:13] with with the homecomings, seven

[13:16] homecomings. It's not like an exact

[13:18] can't exactly I don't exactly map them

[13:21] one to one, but I'm going to go ahead

[13:23] and call them the way that I do. And you

[13:26] may find connections

[13:28] with the seven homecomings in this

[13:32] practice which again is goes across so

[13:35] many different cultures

[13:37] to call on the directions. Um and so I

[13:41] do it I'll probably going to do it a

[13:43] different way than you do it. Um and

[13:45] there's just many many many ways to do

[13:48] this. So I'm going to go ahead and call

[13:51] them. I'm going to stand up and turn to

[13:53] the directions. And if that feels right

[13:55] to you, I invite you to do it. It's also

[13:57] fine to just

[13:59] stay in one spot wherever you're at.

[14:02] Stay comfortable. Um

[14:05] because the directions are are there. It

[14:08] just from in my body, my practice is to

[14:10] turn to turn to each direction. So I'm

[14:13] going to um

[14:15] just shift so I can stand up.

[14:37] So, if you are turning with me, I invite

[14:39] you to turn oop, here we go to the

[14:44] north.

[14:46] Um, I'm going to begin in the north.

[14:51] And if you want to join me, I invite you

[14:54] to bring your attention

[14:57] to the direction of the north.

[15:02] And

[15:04] I invite in

[15:09] the support that is available

[15:14] from the north

[15:16] also from our ancestors.

[15:22] and the direction and the element of

[15:24] air.

[15:28] We're just calling on all of these

[15:30] resources,

[15:34] the north,

[15:36] calling upon,

[15:39] the ancestors who

[15:43] wish the very best for us.

[15:46] Those

[15:48] ancestors who are already here watching

[15:52] over us, protecting us, guiding us.

[15:57] The ancestors who

[16:01] have created the conditions for our

[16:04] freedom, our well-being, and who

[16:06] continue

[16:08] to watch over.

[16:14] Thank you to the north and the ancestors

[16:18] for holding

[16:20] holding us.

[16:23] I'm going to turn to

[16:27] the east.

[16:32] Turn to where the sun rises.

[16:37] the warrior spirit and the element of

[16:40] fire

[16:43] is calling on

[16:45] all of these to support us and hold us

[16:48] in our practice.

[16:53] To bring the fire when it is needed

[16:58] and to offer gratitude

[17:01] to the east, to the fire and the war

[17:04] warrior spirit.

[17:08] And a turn to now to the south.

[17:15] Inviting

[17:17] the self,

[17:19] the child,

[17:22] our own inner child,

[17:26] an element of earth.

[17:32] Just feeling

[17:34] the support

[17:36] of our own child nature

[17:43] and offering gratitude to the south

[17:48] to earth and the child

[17:52] and then turning now to the west

[18:00] inviting

[18:03] The spirit of the nurturer, the

[18:06] caretaker,

[18:08] and the element of water.

[18:12] This feeling the support

[18:15] of the nurturer, maybe our own inner

[18:19] parent, caretaker,

[18:22] endless

[18:24] element of water, the vast ocean.

[18:29] feeling all the support we receive from

[18:33] these benefactors

[18:35] and

[18:37] also offering our gratitude

[18:44] and then bringing

[18:48] uh our awareness to the land under us.

[18:51] We may touch the earth.

[18:55] Feeling the support of this land right

[18:58] here. Maybe the stewards calling on the

[19:01] stewards of the land.

[19:03] Offering our gratitude

[19:07] to the Aloney people, to the tribes

[19:10] where you are

[19:12] for stewarding this land, taking care of

[19:16] it, and feeling the support of the land

[19:19] under us.

[19:21] and offering their gratitude

[19:26] and turning upwards to the sky.

[19:31] Feeling the support of this vast sky

[19:34] above us

[19:37] and space, endless space,

[19:42] feeling all that is held there and

[19:44] offering gratitude

[19:47] for all that we receive.

[19:50] from the sky. And then finally coming to

[19:54] center, finding ourselves here at the

[19:57] center,

[20:03] calling on ourselves

[20:09] and feeling ourselves [snorts] held at

[20:12] the center of these directions.

[20:15] that we are always here

[20:18] with these elements and directions and

[20:21] benefactors

[20:23] all around us

[20:26] in each direction above and below and

[20:29] right here at center.

[20:35] And with that support of these

[20:38] directions,

[20:40] I invite us to find a comfortable

[20:42] position for our practice.

[21:06] So,

[21:09] hey, I invite you just to

[21:12] invite all of us just to take a few

[21:14] breaths together,

[21:19] feeling all of this support all around

[21:22] us.

[21:29] Just bringing some intention

[21:32] to meeting ourselves. This body in this

[21:36] present moment.

[21:40] This is the place where we practice

[21:43] right here in this body in this present

[21:45] moment.

[21:52] I'm going to bring in our invoking

[21:55] mantra

[21:57] which has also been shared in the chat.

[22:03] So our invoking mantra om

[22:08] kinoa

[22:11] this is where we call upon medicine

[22:14] Buddha. Medicine Buddha, I pray that you

[22:17] know and look upon me now.

[22:20] Or we may have other words or other

[22:22] feelings that we bring to this medicine

[22:26] Buddha. See me, feel me, hear me,

[22:31] hold me,

[22:35] care for me, help me,

[22:41] love me. We can ask anything here. We're

[22:47] just calling with our heart on medicine

[22:51] Buddha

[22:52] with whatever is present right here in

[22:54] this heart.

[22:57] So, I'm going to all

[23:00] um chant boom, then the invoking mantra

[23:04] three times, and then as always, you're

[23:08] invited to chant in your own space or

[23:12] just to listen

[23:14] or to hum.

[23:16] So many ways of um doing this chanting

[23:20] practice

[23:22] and all are invited.

[23:34] Oh,

[23:48] and last

[23:52] He

[23:55] know

[23:58] so

[24:11] no

[24:13] so

[24:22] home.

[24:29] No.

[24:32] Oh

[24:34] wow.

[24:41] Oh.

[25:04] I'm going to turn next to um the

[25:07] medicine Buddha Buddha mantra

[25:10] teata bacon bacon maha bacon raza gatea

[25:18] like this I pray for the end of pain and

[25:22] suffering and the root of pain and

[25:24] suffering and I release the energy of

[25:26] this prayer out to all the world so that

[25:30] we may be liberated.

[25:34] So, we'll um

[25:39] we'll chant this one together and then

[25:42] we'll take a pause for prayer requests.

[25:44] So, if you haven't done a prayer request

[25:46] yet, the link is in the chat.

[25:50] Um so just inviting that as well

[25:56] and beginning the mantra

[26:05] bacon.

[26:15] [snorts]

[26:20] Bacon

[26:39] [snorts]

[41:41] Bacon.

[41:45] Wow.

[41:51] Bacon

[41:59] got taste. Oh, wow.

[42:20] And I'm just going to leave some space,

[42:24] some silence for us each to bring

[42:29] our medicine Buddha practice to

[42:31] completion

[42:33] in our own way,

[42:37] in any way that we have called in

[42:39] medicine Buddha. Well,

[42:44] all of the dharma protectors,

[42:47] bodit sattas, Buddhas,

[42:51] our ancestors and benefactors,

[42:54] let us take a little time,

[42:57] minute or so together in silence to

[43:00] thank them, release them, allow them and

[43:05] ourselves to dissolve and bring our

[43:08] practice to a close.

[43:56] As we continue to close this practice

[43:58] together,

[44:00] I

[44:02] call on and release the north, the

[44:07] ancestors

[44:09] and the element of air

[44:12] and offer gratitude. I call in and

[44:15] release

[44:17] the east element of fire warrior spirit.

[44:24] Offer gratitude.

[44:28] Call on the south, the child, the earth.

[44:33] Thank you. Release you.

[44:37] Call on the west,

[44:40] the caretaker, nurturer, the

[44:42] [clears throat] water.

[44:45] Thank you. I release you. [gasps]

[44:48] Touching the land.

[44:51] I thank you and I release you.

[44:55] Touching the sky. I thank you. I release

[44:58] you.

[45:01] And finally touching ourselves here at

[45:04] center. Offering ourselves gratitude

[45:11] and letting go

[45:21] and inviting in

[45:24] maybe a little movement or a stretch

[45:28] as we complete our practice. [gasps]

[45:31] Just

[45:32] bringing feeling into how does the body

[45:36] want to close?

[45:39] Bringing in whatever movement or sound

[45:45] the body feels called to. Maybe a little

[45:49] shake,

[45:50] little shimmy, a little wiggle.

[45:56] Um I'm gonna

[46:00] um

[46:02] recite Shanti Dava's prayer three times

[46:07] for our closing.

[46:10] May I be a protector to those without

[46:12] protection, a leader to those who

[46:14] journey, and a boat, a bridge of passage

[46:17] for those desiring the further shore.

[46:20] May the pain of every living creature be

[46:22] completely cleared away. May I be the

[46:24] doctor and the medicine and may I be a

[46:26] nurse to all sick beings

[46:31] until everyone is healed. Just like

[46:34] space and the great elements such as

[46:36] earth, may I always support the life of

[46:39] all the boundless creatures and until

[46:41] they pass away beyond pain, may also be

[46:44] the source of life for all the realms of

[46:46] very beings that reach until the ends of

[46:48] space.

[46:54] May I be a protector to those without

[46:56] protection, a leader to those who

[46:57] journey, and a boat, a bridge, a passage

[47:00] for all those desiring the further

[47:02] shore. May the pain of every living

[47:04] creature be completely cleared away. May

[47:07] I be the doctor and the medicine, and

[47:09] may I be the nurse for all sick beings

[47:10] in the world until everyone is healed.

[47:14] Just like space and the great elements

[47:16] such as Earth,

[47:18] may I support the life of all the

[47:20] boundless creatures.

[47:23] And until they pass beyond pain, may I

[47:25] also be a source of life for all the

[47:26] realms of great beings that reach until

[47:29] the ends of space.

[47:31] One last time,

[47:33] may I be a protector to those without

[47:35] protection, a leader for those who

[47:37] journey, and a boat, a bridge, a passage

[47:39] for all those desiring the further

[47:40] shore. May the pain of every living

[47:43] creature be completely cleared away. May

[47:45] I be the doctor and the medicine and may

[47:48] I be a nurse for all sick beings until

[47:50] everyone is healed. Just like space and

[47:53] the great elements such as earth, may I

[47:55] always support the life of all the

[47:57] boundless creatures and until they pass

[47:59] beyond pain

[48:01] may also be the source of life for all

[48:04] the realms of varied beings that reach

[48:07] into the ends of space.

[48:15] feeling so much gratitude for all of

[48:17] your practice.

[48:19] It just um it always feels so powerful

[48:24] actually to hold this seat as a as a

[48:30] support to all of our practice. And I

[48:32] I'm just really grateful to everyone who

[48:34] showed up today and especially grateful

[48:36] to Eric and also especially grateful to

[48:39] Lamar Rod

[48:42] for keeping this space going for so

[48:44] long. And I just want to say I know Eric

[48:47] will say this too, but

[48:49] um

[48:51] if this is a space that's supporting

[48:52] your practice, please also support Lamar

[48:55] Rod.

In the session, Medicine Buddha practice is described as a weekly gathering meant to nourish healing, deepen spiritual friendship, and work to abolish social forces that perpetuate harm for oneself and others. It combines chanting, calling on support, offering prayer requests, and dedicating the practice to all beings.
Yes, the weekly Medicine Buddha practice is offered through a registration page at lamarod.com/deity#medicinebuddha. Facilitators other than Lama Rod Owens lead some sessions when he is away, as René Rivera did on October 19, 2026.
Rivera set up an ancestor altar for Día de los Muertos and used it to open the session, calling in the names of his ancestors with offerings of food, flowers, salt, water, and candles. He described the season as a time to speak to and listen to ancestors and to remember them as they want to be remembered.
Rivera described reaching for Medicine Buddha during a painful gallbladder episode without deliberate thought, then chanting and feeling met by the practice. He said the experience showed him that the resource was reliably available, which felt different from knowing it intellectually.
Participants turn toward each direction in turn and call on ancestors and other beings associated with it, moving through the directions up to the sky and then back into the present body. The sequence places the room at the center of a field of support.
Participants offer spoken prayer requests, which may be for people with chronic illness, for those who have died, for community connection, or for unspoken needs. The group then sits in silence for about a minute to offer gratitude and practice letting go.
The session closes with a prayer attributed in the transcript to Shantideva, recited three times and dedicated to all beings until everyone is healed. The facilitator then offered gratitude and asked whether the space was supporting participants.
