Lama Rod Owens is a Buddhist minister, author, activist, yoga instructor and authorized lama in the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism. He describes himself as a Black Buddhist Southern Queen. He holds a Master of Divinity in Buddhist Studies from Harvard Divinity School, where his focus was the intersection of social change, identity and spiritual practice.
His teachings center on freedom, self-expression and radical self-care. He is the author of The New Saints: From Broken Hearts to Spiritual Warriors and Love and Rage: The Path of Liberation through Anger. He is also co-author of Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love and Liberation. He teaches how to transform challenging emotions such as grief and anger into liberation, and he meets people where they are, speaking in words they can relate to. Honoring his southern roots, he calls his healing approach "laying hands," which he describes as guidance in making the daily choices that free us from patterns of self-sabotage. As he has said of his place in Tantric Buddhism: "It can be confusing for people to see Tantric Buddhist teachings coming from someone who's Black and queer, southern, and fat, but I love it. It's who I am."
In 2018 he co-founded Bhumisparsha, a spiritual community that aims to make tantra accessible and inclusive for North American practitioners while serving as a catalyst for social change. He also co-founded Dharma Queens, a series of Instagram Live conversations with sister sadada. He leads retreats, daylongs and workshops, including residential community retreats in the UK and a long-running weekly Medicine Buddha practice. He has also taught for organizations, businesses and universities, including Calm, NYU, Yale, Harvard, Google, Columbia University, the University of Vermont and Boston College. His work has been featured by CNN, Good Morning America, BBC, The Washington Post, PBS, NPR and Ebony.
Worth Knowing
Lama Rod Owens is an authorized lama in the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism—a tradition emphasizing the direct transmission of teachings from teacher to student—who bridges Buddhist practice with Black radical politics and queer identity. He holds a Master of Divinity in Buddhist Studies from Harvard Divinity School, where he studied the intersection of social change and spiritual practice. His work refuses the false split between inner liberation and outer activism: he teaches that freedom is both personal (how we relate to our own grief and anger) and collective (how we dismantle systems that cause suffering). Students come to him because he speaks in language that lands—his southern cadence, his explicitly queer presence, his refusal to perform a sanitized version of Buddhism for white audiences—and because his teachings actually work. He's been featured by CNN, NPR, PBS, and The Washington Post, and he teaches at universities and tech companies (Google, Yale, Harvard, Columbia) alongside leading residential retreats and community centers. His combination of scholarly rigor, activist commitment, and accessible warmth has made him one of the most recognizable Black Buddhist teachers in North America.
