Five Elements & Constitutional Balance:Ayurveda's Path to Health

Ayurveda, an ancient wisdom tradition, teaches that health and happiness depend on understanding your constitutional type—determined by the five elements (space, air, fire, water, earth)—and maintaining balance among the three fundamental body-mind types: Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (water and earth). Rather than treating symptoms, Ayurveda identifies the root imbalance through pulse diagnosis and recommends personalized diet, lifestyle, and medicine based on your unique constitution, so that what heals one person may not suit another.

Why Is Modern Lifestyle Distorted From Ancient Ayurvedic Wisdom?

According to Lokesh Raturi, contemporary living has drifted significantly from the foundational principles of Ayurveda, the traditional system of wellness that translates literally as "the way of healthy living." The speaker emphasizes that in today's world, many people operate from habits and addictions rather than knowledge. We often know intellectually that certain foods or behaviors are not good for our health, yet we continue them anyway—much like driving without understanding traffic patterns. The key missing piece is awareness: understanding what makes us happy and what makes us unhappy, paired with the knowledge of how to bring our body and mind back into balance. This awareness is what Ayurveda, as a science, explicitly teaches: what is good and what is not good for each individual.

How Are Body and Mind Connected in Ayurvedic Understanding?

Raturi explains a fundamental principle that modern medicine is only beginning to recognize: the body and mind are inseparably linked. When the mind experiences disturbance or "botheration," it manifests in the body. Conversely, physical ailments create mental disturbance. This bidirectional relationship means that genuine health requires care of both dimensions simultaneously. Ayurveda does not treat these as separate systems but as an integrated whole. Consequently, addressing only the symptom in one realm while ignoring the other leads to incomplete healing. The science teaches practitioners to tend to both the mental and physical aspects of imbalance.

What Are the Five Elements That Form the Body?

Ayurveda posits that all human bodies are composed of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements appear in different proportions in each individual. Every person is born with a unique combination—a particular ratio that determines their constitutional type, called "prakriti." Because these proportions differ from person to person, external appearances and internal functioning vary widely. Understanding which elements predominate in your constitution is as fundamental to personal health as knowing your blood type, Raturi argues, yet far fewer people are aware of their Ayurvedic constitution than their blood group.

What Are the Three Main Constitutional Types?

Ayurveda identifies three primary constitutions, each named after the elements that dominate it:

  • Vata (Space and Air): Vata-predominant individuals tend to be thin, highly talkative, and restless. They struggle to sit still in one place for extended periods and are perpetually busy—whether with work or without it. Despite often trying various supplements and interventions, Vata types frequently maintain low body weight throughout their lives. They are prone to anxiety and constant mental activity.
  • Pitta (Fire): Pitta constitutions are characterized by constant activity, moderate physical build, sharp features, and an attractive appearance. These individuals often possess leadership qualities, perfectionism, dynamism, and keen intelligence. However, they also tend toward short temper and a competitive drive to be "the boss." Pitta types are ambitious and self-assured, believing strongly in their own intelligence—a belief that is often validated by their actual capabilities.
  • Kapha (Water and Earth): Kapha types are cool, calm, and often perceived as lazy. They tend toward heavier body weight and are the slowest to complete tasks. Yet despite these apparent liabilities, Ayurveda considers Kapha the most balanced constitution. Kapha individuals are the happiest, most content, and most peaceful people—the least bothered by life's disturbances. They are notably the "most smiley person on the planet," according to Raturi.

What About Mixed and Balanced Constitutional Types?

Not all individuals fit neatly into one category. Raturi explains that combinations exist: some people are Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha, exhibiting the mixed characteristics of their two dominant elements. Additionally, a seventh constitution exists called "Sama," in which all five elements are present in equal proportion. In total, Ayurveda recognizes seven distinct constitutional types. Most people fall into one of the primary three or one of the combinations, and identifying which one you are is crucial for making health decisions.

Why Does One Food Heal One Person But Harm Another?

This question gets to the heart of personalized medicine in Ayurveda. A food that is excellent for one constitutional type may be entirely inappropriate for another. Raturi uses family dynamics as an example: in a household with members of different constitutions, conflict often arises because one person is delighted by a particular meal while another finds it unsuitable or unappealing. Their liking—their natural preferences—differs slightly according to constitution. This is not mere opinion; it reflects genuine physiological differences. Before consuming anything, an Ayurvedic approach asks: "Is this food friendly to my constitution?" This awareness prevents the "fight" that often breaks out in families about what to eat.

How Does Pulse Diagnosis Work in Ayurveda?

One of Ayurveda's most distinctive diagnostic tools is pulse diagnosis. Rather than waiting for the patient to describe their problems—the typical modern medical approach—an Ayurvedic practitioner reads the pulse and identifies what imbalances are present in the system. This is described as "the beauty of Ayurveda": the practitioner tells you what is wrong, rather than the patient telling the practitioner. The pulse reveals the specific imbalances in Vata, Pitta, and Kapha that are driving dysfunction. This diagnostic method shifts the focus from treating surface symptoms to identifying root causes.

What Is the Difference Between Treating Symptoms and Eliminating Root Cause?

Raturi delineates two fundamental approaches to healing. One approach treats the symptoms—the visible manifestations of disease. The other approach, Ayurvedic in nature, seeks to eliminate the root imbalance that generates those symptoms. When you address both levels simultaneously, true cure occurs. The speaker advises listeners to continue taking medicines prescribed by their doctors (modern medicine's symptom-relief approach) while simultaneously applying the best of Ayurveda to rebalance Vata and Kapha in the system. This integrative approach—modern medical treatment plus Ayurvedic constitutional balancing—results in a truly balanced body.

Why Is Knowing Your Constitution the Key to Health?

The overarching principle Raturi emphasizes is this: if you know your constitution and what imbalance your system is currently carrying, you possess the key to health. This knowledge allows you to make dietary, lifestyle, and medicinal choices that are specifically aligned with restoring balance to your unique physiology. Rather than following a generic health prescription—which may work for someone else but not for you—you operate from personalized wisdom. Health, in this model, is not the absence of disease but the presence of constitutional balance, tailored to your particular proportion of the five elements.

Where to go from here

To apply these teachings, first determine your Ayurvedic constitution (prakriti). Many online assessments exist, though consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner provides the most accurate diagnosis. Once you know your type, research which foods, spices, seasons, and daily routines support your constitution. If you are experiencing health challenges, seek out an Ayurvedic practitioner trained in pulse diagnosis to identify the specific imbalances in your Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Then implement both conventional medical treatment for symptom relief and Ayurvedic protocols for root-cause restoration. This dual approach honors both modern and ancient systems while working toward genuine, lasting health.

[0:21] so today we'll talk

[0:25] about happy lifestyle

[0:31] you know today our lifestyle is little

[0:34] bit

[0:36] distorted from the ancient

[0:40] wisdom that's called ayurveda the way of

[0:44] healthy

[0:46] living healthy and happy both are

[0:50] related to the body and

[0:54] mind so if you notice many times we have

[0:57] so much botheration in the mind and it

[1:00] reflect in the body also and sometimes

[1:02] problems in the body deflect in the mind

[1:05] so both are connected so we need to take

[1:07] care of both that's what the

[1:19] says the science which teaches us what

[1:23] is good and what is not good what makes

[1:26] us happy and What Makes Us unhappy if

[1:29] you know these factor is very

[1:31] easy like you know the traffic you can

[1:34] drive easily

[1:37] right but many times our liking is our

[1:42] addiction we know is not good for health

[1:44] but still we take

[1:46] that how to bring that

[1:49] balance that's very important to know

[1:52] about the body and

[1:54] mind so let's take body

[1:57] first according to AA body is made of

[2:01] five basic elements space air fire water

[2:06] and

[2:07] Earth and every individual is born with

[2:10] a little bit different

[2:12] proportions that's why every individual

[2:14] look little different it's called

[2:16] prri so those who are born more with the

[2:19] space and your element they are named as

[2:22] wat prri wat

[2:25] Constitution wat person will be very

[2:27] thin more talkative always Restless they

[2:30] can't see sit at one place for a long

[2:31] time always keep moving busy with work

[2:33] busy without work and low body

[2:36] weight whole life they took so many

[2:38] supplements to gain some we but they

[2:40] never succeed second Constitution those

[2:43] are born more with Fire

[2:46] Element they're named as PA prti paa

[2:50] Constitution paa person is always active

[2:53] moderate built sharp feature goodlooking

[2:56] leadership quality perfectionist dynamic

[3:01] intelligent they think they are

[3:03] intelligent of course they are and short

[3:06] temperament

[3:08] also you know PA like to be boss they

[3:11] doesn't like boss in their head huh and

[3:13] third is kafa those who are born more

[3:16] with water and Earth

[3:18] element so kafa person is cool calm lazy

[3:23] happy fatty and

[3:27] overweight they never complete the task

[3:29] in proper time always

[3:32] lazy but they are the most happy and

[3:35] smiley person on the planet so AA say

[3:37] kafa is the best

[3:38] Constitution the least bothered person

[3:41] on the

[3:42] planet and three Constitution are mixed

[3:46] wat PA kafa and kafa they have the mixed

[3:50] characteristics of these

[3:52] two and one is called Sam all five in

[3:55] equal proportion so total seven

[3:57] Constitution are there and you are one

[3:58] of that you know everybody know their

[4:00] blood group right that much important is

[4:02] know what Constitution we are also you

[4:05] know before you put anything in your

[4:06] mouth you really need to know is it

[4:08] friendly to your Constitution or

[4:10] not because one food is good for one

[4:13] person but is not good for another one

[4:15] and especially when the family the

[4:16] different Constitution there is always

[4:18] fighting one person will be happy oh wow

[4:20] this is the food and other say oh same

[4:22] thing again the liking also is different

[4:25] slightly according to the each

[4:27] constition so if we learn how to balance

[4:30] our and kafa it can heal anything in the

[4:33] system and that is the key of Health to

[4:37] know what constition you are and what

[4:40] imbalance your system is carrying and

[4:43] that is a beauty called pulse diagnosis

[4:45] through the pulse we can found what

[4:47] imbalance is there you know normally we

[4:50] go to the doctor and we tell our

[4:51] problems but in ayura we check the pulse

[4:54] and we tell what imbalance you are

[4:55] having that is the beauty of AA to

[4:57] eliminate the root one approach to treat

[5:01] the symptoms and other approach to

[5:04] eliminate the root so when you go on the

[5:06] both

[5:07] level you get

[5:09] cured so take whatever medicine your

[5:12] doctor prescribed but the same times use

[5:15] the best of Aura to balance your V and

[5:19] kafa then your body is balanced

Ayurveda teaches that all bodies are composed of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. Every person is born with a unique proportion of these elements, which determines their constitutional type (prakriti). This is why people look and function differently—their elemental proportions vary, just as blood types vary among individuals.
Vata (space and air) types are thin, talkative, restless, and struggle with weight gain. Pitta (fire) types are active, intelligent, sharp-featured, and ambitious but prone to short temper. Kapha (water and earth) types are calm, happy, steady, and prone to weight gain, but Ayurveda considers them the most balanced and peaceful.
Different constitutional types have different physiological needs. A food that balances one constitution's Vata, Pitta, or Kapha may aggravate another's. Before eating, you should ask whether the food is friendly to your specific constitution, not follow generic nutritional advice that may suit someone else.
In conventional medicine, the patient describes their symptoms and the doctor responds. In Ayurveda, the practitioner reads the pulse and tells the patient what imbalances are present in their system—identifying root causes rather than waiting for symptoms to be reported.
Yes. Take the medicine your doctor prescribes for symptom relief, but simultaneously use Ayurvedic practices to balance your Vata and Kapha. Addressing both the symptoms and the root imbalance results in true healing and a balanced body.
Ayurveda considers knowing your constitution (prakriti) just as important—if not more so—than knowing your blood type. Your constitution determines which foods, lifestyles, and medicines support your health, making it essential knowledge for personalized wellness.
Ayurveda means 'the way of healthy living.' Modern life has drifted from its principles because people operate from addiction and habit rather than knowledge, continuing unhealthy practices despite knowing they are harmful. Understanding what makes you happy and unhappy, paired with constitutional awareness, is the missing piece.
