Where to Start with Melle: A Beginner's Guide

Start Here: Before I Lose It (2026)

If you're new to Melle, begin with Before I Lose It. This 13-track album is his most fully realized work—a complete thought rather than a sketch. It shows you everything he does well: self-produced intimacy, instruments chosen for character rather than convenience, and arrangements that breathe. The production never announces itself, which is precisely the point. You're hearing someone who knows exactly how much space a song needs and isn't afraid to leave it there.

Listen straight through once without multitasking. Melle's work rewards attention to texture—the way acoustic elements fold into electronic ones, how a melody can land harder when it's not fighting for oxygen. This isn't background music, but it also doesn't demand you fall to your knees. It asks for presence, not worship.

Where to Go Next

After Before I Lose It, move to the Reworks EP. This vinyl-only release reimagines seven songs from his earlier albums with stripped-down, collaborative arrangements. It's fascinating to hear how his songs transform when other musicians enter the room—seven different collaborators, seven different angles on material you might already know. The EP reveals what's structurally solid in his songwriting versus what lives in the production choices. It also shows his willingness to let go, which is rare for someone who typically controls every element.

Then circle back to his earlier albums. You'll hear the progression—how he arrived at Before I Lose It's clarity through trial and refinement. The DNA is consistent, but you'll catch him learning in real time what to add and, more importantly, what to subtract.

What to Expect on First Listen

Melle's music doesn't hit you with obvious hooks or dramatic builds. Expect restraint. Melodic restraint, production restraint, emotional restraint that somehow conveys more feeling than confessional excess. The vocals sit in the mix rather than on top of it. Instruments enter and exit without fanfare. If you're coming from maximalist indie pop or highly processed bedroom pop, the first listen might feel understated to the point of absence. Give it time. The details emerge on repeat listens—a synth pad choice, a drum tone, the specific way silence functions between phrases.

Common Misunderstandings

Beginners often mistake Melle's approach for minimalism or lo-fi aesthetic. It's neither. Every sound is deliberate, every production decision intentional. This isn't "bedroom pop" in the sense of limited resources forcing a sound—it's studio-quality work that chooses intimacy over bombast. The lo-fi tag misses how carefully constructed these arrangements actually are.

Another trap: assuming the Dutch indie scene connection means gentle coffee-shop vibes. While there's melodic restraint in common with artists like Benny Sings, Melle's instrument choices and textural layering create something more complex than pleasant background listening. Don't passive-listen your way through the first few tracks and declare it "nice but samey." You're missing the architecture.

When This Hits Hardest

Melle's work tends to land during transitions—when you're between versions of yourself rather than in crisis or celebration. It's music for 3am clarity, not 3am chaos. It resonates when you're learning to sit with uncertainty rather than fix it, when you're old enough to value craft over novelty, when you've tired of music that performs its emotions and want something that trusts you to meet it halfway.

It also hits differently in physical spaces where you control the sound. Headphones on a commute, yes, but even better: home speakers, low volume, evening. Let it fill a room without dominating it.

One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1-2: Before I Lose It, full album, twice. Once while doing nothing else, once during a mundane task.

Day 3-4: Pick three tracks that stood out. Listen on repeat. Notice what instruments are actually playing, where the production makes space.

Day 5: Reworks EP in one sitting. Note what changes with collaboration.

Day 6: Return to Before I Lose It. You'll hear it differently now.

Day 7: Explore the earlier albums. Find where your entry point came from.
