A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) who brought Gaudiya Vaishnavism from India to the West in 1965.

What is A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada?

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896–1977), born Abhay Charan De, was a Gaudiya Vaishnava spiritual teacher who founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in New York City in 1966. At age 69, he traveled from India to the United States with the mission to spread Krishna consciousness throughout the Western world. He is best known for his translations and commentaries on core Vaishnava texts—particularly the Bhagavad Gita and the multi-volume Srimad-Bhagavatam—and for establishing a global movement centered on bhakti-yoga, devotional service to Krishna.

Prabhupada’s significance lies not merely in his scholarly output—he authored over 70 books—but in his capacity to translate an ancient Bengali devotional tradition into a form accessible to Western audiences during the countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s. His teachings emphasize the practice of chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, vegetarianism, abstention from intoxication and gambling, and the centrality of guru-disciple relationships within the Gaudiya lineage.

Origins & Lineage

Prabhupada was initiated in 1933 by Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, founder of the Gaudiya Math, a mission dedicated to spreading the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534), the 16th-century Bengali saint who popularized congregational chanting of God’s names. Chaitanya’s lineage traces through the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya sampradaya, one of four authorized Vaishnava traditions in India.

Bhaktisiddhanta instructed Prabhupada to bring Krishna consciousness to the English-speaking world. After decades working as a pharmacist and raising a family in Calcutta, Prabhupada took sannyasa (renounced order) in 1959 at age 63 and began translating Srimad-Bhagavatam into English. In 1965, he boarded a cargo ship to New York with forty rupees and a trunk of his books. Within a year, he had incorporated ISKCON and attracted a small following on the Lower East Side.

By 1977, ISKCON had established over 100 temples worldwide, initiated thousands of disciples, and begun large-scale book distribution. Prabhupada died in Vrindavan, India, on November 14, 1977, having circled the globe 14 times and initiated approximately 5,000 disciples.

How It’s Practiced

Prabhupada’s teachings are practiced primarily through sadhana-bhakti, regulated devotional service. Core practices include:

  • Japa meditation: Chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra (“Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare”) on a strand of 108 beads, typically for 16 rounds daily.
  • Kirtan: Congregational singing of the maha-mantra, often accompanied by harmonium, mridanga drums, and kartals (hand cymbals).
  • Deity worship: Ritualized service to murtis (sacred images) of Radha-Krishna or other forms of Vishnu, involving elaborate daily schedules of bathing, dressing, and food offerings.
  • Scriptural study: Daily reading of Prabhupada’s translations, particularly Bhagavad Gita As It Is and Srimad-Bhagavatam.
  • Prasadam: Vegetarian meals offered first to Krishna, then distributed as sanctified food.

Prabhupada emphasized the householder path was equally valid to monastic renunciation, encouraging disciples to marry, raise Krishna-conscious children, and maintain livelihoods while practicing devotion.

A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada Today

Contemporary seekers encounter Prabhupada’s legacy through ISKCON temples in over 60 countries, many of which host weekly Sunday Feast programs combining kirtan, discourse, and vegetarian meals. His books remain in print through the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, translated into more than 80 languages, and distributed in airports, bookstores, and online.

His recorded lectures and bhajans circulate widely on YouTube and streaming platforms. Major ISKCON centers—such as those in Vrindavan (India), Mayapur (West Bengal), and New Vrindavan (West Virginia)—offer residential courses, retreats, and pilgrimage experiences. University courses on new religious movements and Hindu diaspora studies frequently examine his role in globalizing bhakti traditions.

Scholars including J. Stillson Judah, E. Burke Rochford Jr., and Kenneth R. Valpey have analyzed ISKCON’s institutional evolution, challenges with succession after Prabhupada’s death, and tensions between traditionalism and adaptation.

Common Misconceptions

Prabhupada is often conflated with the broader “Hare Krishna movement,” but he represents one specific lineage within Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Not all Krishna devotion follows his interpretive framework or organizational model.

His works are commentarial translations, not direct renderings. His Bhagavad Gita As It Is presents the text through a Gaudiya lens emphasizing Krishna’s supremacy, differing from Advaita Vedanta or other Hindu interpretations.

Prabhupada was not a guru in the sense of offering personalized mystical transmission to each student; his model emphasized book distribution and standardized practice over individualized spiritual direction. ISKCON’s post-1977 guru succession has been controversial, with schisms and reforms regarding institutional authority.

His writings reflect mid-20th-century Indian conservative social views, including statements on gender roles and science that contemporary ISKCON communities engage with variably.

How to Begin

Read Bhagavad Gita As It Is (1968, revised 1983), Prabhupada’s most widely circulated work, available free online and in print. Attend a Sunday Feast program at a local ISKCON temple to experience kirtan and discourse firsthand. Many centers offer introductory courses on bhakti-yoga philosophy.

Begin chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra on beads (available at ISKCON centers or online) for one round (approximately 7 minutes) daily. Listen to Prabhupada’s recorded lectures via the Vanipedia or PrabhupadaVani archives to hear his teaching style and emphases directly.

For academic context, consult E. Burke Rochford Jr.'s Hare Krishna Transformed (2007) or Joshua M. Greene’s biography Swami in a Strange Land (2016).
