Does Suffering Mean Spiritual Seeking Hasn't Ended?

Rupert Spira

Suffering, in Rupert Spira's account, is not evidence that spiritual seeking has failed. It is evidence that seeking is already underway. In a 90-second YouTube video published in October 2026, the non-dual teacher argues that anyone who is suffering is, by definition, looking for something they feel is missing, and that the honest move is to admit it and then ask a better question: not whether to act, but where to look.

If suffering is already seeking, where should we look?

Spira's central move is to refuse a comfortable pretense. Plenty of unhappy people tell themselves they have stopped wanting anything, that they have made peace with their lot. He calls that a contradiction. "It would be much more honest if we are suffering to say yes, I'm suffering," he says in the video. "That means I'm searching for something. I'm resisting what is present and I'm seeking what is not present." (0:00)

The implication is practical. If we are already seeking, the real question is direction. Spira contrasts two strategies. The first tries to relieve distress through acquisition, what he lists as "objects, incense, and so on." (0:43) The second, which he recommends, is to relieve suffering "by investigating the one on whose behalf it arises." (0:47) This is the classic move of self-inquiry: instead of trying to fix the content of the distress, you look at who is experiencing it.

He describes where that investigation leads. Trace it back "to your true being," and, he says, "there is no sorrow in your being." (0:53) From there the sense of a separate self loosens, and what remains is "I am at peace." (1:04) Abiding in that peace is what he calls being "on the pathless path." (1:09) The phrase recurs across non-dual teaching to describe a way that is not a ladder of steps, because the thing sought is already what you are.

The clip closes with a caution that is easy to miss. Once there is peace, you do not need to insist that "there's nobody here and there's nothing to do." (1:15) The point is not to turn the absence of self into a new doctrine. You simply rest "in the peace of your being." That restraint is what keeps the teaching from becoming one more story of seeking, this time with a finish line.

Where to go from here

This clip is a compressed statement of a teaching Spira develops at greater length in his longer videos on his YouTube channel, Rupert Spira. For fuller context on self-inquiry and non-duality, start there, and treat this short excerpt as an invitation to investigate your own suffering rather than as a conclusion to accept on trust.

[0:00] It would be much more honest if if we

[0:02] are suffering to say yes, I'm suffering.

[0:06] That means I'm searching for something.

[0:07] I'm resisting what is present and I'm

[0:09] seeking what is not present. Suffering

[0:11] is by definition a state of seeking.

[0:15] So to pretend that one is not seeking

[0:17] whilst one is suffering is just a

[0:18] contradiction of terms. So it would be

[0:21] much more honest to say yes, I I'm

[0:23] suffering. I don't like what is present.

[0:25] I'm seeking.

[0:27] Then there is something to do. So the

[0:29] question then is not whether or not we

[0:31] should do something. We are already

[0:33] doing something. We are already seeking

[0:35] if we're suffering. The question is what

[0:38] should we seek and more importantly

[0:40] where should we seek? Instead

[0:42] [clears throat] of relieving the

[0:43] suffering through the acquisition of

[0:45] objects, essence, incense, and so on, we

[0:47] should relieve the suffering by

[0:49] investigating the one on whose behalf it

[0:51] arises.

[0:53] And then having done that, you trace

[0:55] your way back to your true to your

[0:57] being. You see there is no sorrow in

[0:59] your being. Then you can say there is no

[1:04] separate self here. I am at peace.

[1:09] Then you can abide in the peace of your

[1:12] true nature. Then you're on the pathless

[1:14] path.

[1:15] But then

[1:17] you don't need then to say there's

[1:18] nobody here and there's nothing to do.

[1:20] You're just

[1:21] you're just in in the peace of your

[1:23] being.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Rupert Spira suggests that suffering is itself a form of seeking, because it involves resisting what is present and looking for what is not. Rather than pretending to have stopped seeking, he recommends admitting the seeking and asking where to direct it.
He says to relieve suffering by investigating the one on whose behalf it arises, instead of trying to relieve it through acquiring objects. Tracing that inquiry back to your true being, he says, reveals there is no sorrow in it.
In this short clip, Spira describes the pathless path as abiding in the peace of your true nature after inquiry has led you back to your being. He adds that you then don't need to insist there is nobody here or that there is nothing to do.
