Ancient Struggle Between Good and EvilStill Shapes Our World Today

Something is missing from how we understand our own history. That absence—a gap in our collective story—leaves us vulnerable to forces we cannot recognize. According to systems thinker and New York Times bestselling author Gregg Braden, the chaos unfolding across our screens and communities is not random, nor is it new. It follows an ancient pattern described consistently across humanity's most revered spiritual traditions: a struggle between forces of light and dark that began long before we appeared on Earth and continues today as conflict, division, and the systematic erosion of human dignity.

What Is This Ancient Struggle, Really?

Braden frames the matter with precision: "This context, you and I are part of an ancient struggle." It's a confrontation that allegedly began in the spiritual realm and manifests on Earth as what most people call the struggle between good and evil. Unlike the cartoonish versions many grew up with—the devil on one shoulder, an angel on the other—this ancient conflict operates at every level of human civilization: geopolitical, psychological, social, technological, and cultural.

What makes this framing significant is not mysticism for its own sake, but utility. When viewed through this lens, disparate events—military conflicts, family breakdown, algorithmic manipulation, the weaponization of social discourse—suddenly appear as expressions of a single underlying dynamic. They are not isolated phenomena. They are chapters in one very old story.

The Goal: Denying Your Highest Power

The struggle between good and evil, Braden argues, has one central aim: to deny human beings access to their deepest power—what he calls divinity. This word carries baggage for many, often linked to religion or spiritual grandiosity. Braden offers instead a working definition drawn from contemporary usage: "Divinity is defined as the powers or the forces that transcend perceived human limits."

In other words, divinity isn't mystical or supernatural. It describes capacities—healing, empathy, cognitive ability, intuition, connection—that exist beyond the narrow bandwidth of limitations we've been taught to accept as inevitable. Most of us, Braden suggests, live within artificial ceilings. We've inherited cultural stories about what's possible for a human body, a human mind, a human heart. We accept these inherited limits as if they were laws of physics.

Divinity, then, is the capacity to transcend these false limits and access our actual human potential. And according to Braden's reading of ancient traditions, the entire machinery of the struggle between good and evil exists to keep us from realizing this.

How the Struggle Shapes All of Human History

Braden's systems-thinking background leads him to propose that this ancient conflict is not just a spiritual metaphor but the actual context holding human history together. It is, he says, "the glue that's holding everything together. It's defining all of human history."

Looking outward at the world "right now"—whether at Russia-Ukraine tensions, Middle East conflicts, or the social fractures tearing through families and communities—he sees expressions of this same ancient dynamic playing out in real time. The struggle takes many forms, but once recognized, the pattern becomes coherent.

Evil, in this framework, is not monolithic. Braden distinguishes several categories:

  • Kinetic evil: Direct, visible violence—boots on the ground, open conflict.
  • Psychological evil: Programs and media designed to generate fear, guilt, and suspicion, fragmenting social bonds and dividing families, communities, and societies.
  • Cultural evil: The weaponization of legitimate social topics—gender, culture, family—that could unite us if discussed with care, but instead are deployed as divisive tools.
  • Technological evil: The systematic replacement of human biology and autonomy with artificial systems.

Each operates according to the same principle: break the bonds of trust, community, and belonging that enable humans to recognize and access their divinity.

The Weaponization of Social Media and Algorithms

Braden focuses particularly on how algorithms on social media platforms drive divisive behavior. "These algorithms are driving us to be something that we were never never meant to be," he observes. The technology creates conditions for fear, ridicule, shame, and hate—states fundamentally at odds with our nature. "We are nature. In nature, we are all about cooperation and love and empathy and sympathy."

The algorithms, however, are engineered to push us toward the opposite: isolation, suspicion, conflict. The effect cascades from our screens into our dinner tables, our workplaces, our marriages. Psychological warfare becomes domestic reality.

The Normalization of Evil in Entertainment and Culture

Beyond algorithms, Braden points to the normalization of evil in mass entertainment as a tool of the larger struggle. What was once shocking or taboo is gradually reframed as acceptable, even celebrated, until the public consciousness adjusts its baseline for what is normal. In this way, expressions of what ancient traditions call evil become embedded in everyday culture, desensitizing populations and weakening their capacity to recognize manipulation.

Technology as a Tool to Replace Humanness

The most urgent expression of this struggle, in Braden's view, is technological. There is, he says, "a movement right now to replace our biology with technology." He catalogs the specifics: AI, computer chips implanted in the brain, chemicals introduced into the bloodstream, RFID chips beneath the skin, nano-sensors moving through the body and transmitting data to large databases operated by artificial intelligence. "This isn't, you know, a future sci-fi scenario. It's happening now because the technology's available."

The targeting is deliberate: young people are especially in the crosshairs. The aim is not hidden but is rarely discussed in mainstream discourse—the replacement of human agency, intuition, and embodied wisdom with technological systems. In doing so, the very capacity for divinity—the transcendence of perceived limits—is outsourced to machines. Humans become passengers in systems designed and controlled by others.

Where to Go From Here

Understanding this ancient context is not offered as cause for despair but for empowerment. As Braden emphasizes: "Once you begin to recognize them, then you are empowered to navigate in way and make good choices." Awareness of the pattern—the ancient struggle, its multiple expressions, its goal of denying us our divinity—creates a space for discernment. You can recognize the manipulation not as accident or isolated incident, but as part of a coherent strategy. That recognition is itself a form of freedom. The missing piece in our story is the story itself: the long, continuous conflict for human dignity, agency, and the capacity to transcend the artificial limits others have set for us.

[0:00] Something is missing

[0:02] in our story.

[0:04] So, I'm going to acknowledge, again,

[0:05] right now. A lot of people don't want to

[0:07] talk about what I'm about to share with

[0:09] you here.

[0:10] I think our lives are incomplete if we

[0:12] do not have this conversation.

[0:15] It's described in the clues from our

[0:17] most ancient and cherished spiritual

[0:20] traditions. They're very old, but

[0:22] they're not obsolete.

[0:24] Our ancestors began telling us

[0:28] about a process. In this world, modern

[0:31] science has discounted the process.

[0:34] But, it's very real, and that's what I

[0:35] want to talk to you about right now.

[0:38] This This context, you and I are part of

[0:42] an ancient struggle.

[0:44] All right? It's a struggle in the world

[0:46] that began long, long ago before we even

[0:49] appeared. It began in the spiritual

[0:52] realm, if we are to believe

[0:55] our most ancient and cherished spiritual

[0:57] traditions.

[0:58] It's a struggle that began in the

[1:00] spiritual realm long ago, but it

[1:03] continues as the chaos

[1:05] on Earth today. It's a struggle between

[1:09] what many people call light and dark,

[1:10] okay? The forces of light and dark.

[1:13] We interpret those forces

[1:16] as a struggle between good and evil.

[1:19] Now, I want to tell you, when we talk

[1:21] about good and evil, I I was born and

[1:23] raised in a very uh conservative

[1:26] community in the middle of this big,

[1:29] beautiful United States that we live in,

[1:30] some of us live in. Northern Missouri,

[1:33] if there's anyone from Missouri here.

[1:35] We used to talk about good and evil, and

[1:37] it was kind of a joke. You know, we'd

[1:39] talk about a little red devil that would

[1:40] be on on one shoulder with a a pitchfork

[1:43] and and a pointy tail, and an angel on

[1:45] the other side, and they were always,

[1:47] you know, talking back and forth, "Do

[1:49] this. Don't do this." That was the

[1:51] extent of the conversation

[1:53] of good and evil when I was a kid, when

[1:55] I was growing up.

[1:56] Well, the goal of this struggle between

[1:59] good and evil

[2:01] is the reason I wrote this book.

[2:03] The goal of the struggle, and I want you

[2:05] to to really get this. The goal of the

[2:07] struggle between good and evil is to

[2:09] deny us our highest form of power as

[2:13] humans.

[2:14] And we call that power

[2:17] divinity.

[2:18] Now, I'm going to acknowledge right now,

[2:20] I know divinity means different things

[2:22] to different people.

[2:23] And there's some baggage attached to the

[2:25] word.

[2:27] Uh there are some preconceived ideas,

[2:29] and I'm acknowledging that.

[2:31] Many people link divinity with religion,

[2:34] because there there are schools of

[2:35] divinity that that make those

[2:37] connections.

[2:38] But I'm going to show you a definition,

[2:39] and this may surprise you. It's a

[2:41] contemporary definition of divinity.

[2:43] Look at this. Divinity is defined as the

[2:46] powers or the forces

[2:49] that transcend perceived human limits,

[2:52] and that's it. Now, think about what

[2:54] this is saying. I want you to really

[2:55] think about this.

[2:57] Powers or forces that transcend, that

[3:00] means become more than perceived human

[3:04] limits. You and I are probably living

[3:08] limits that are not even real.

[3:10] You and I are living limits that we've

[3:12] been indoctrinated to accept when it

[3:15] comes to our healing and our bodies and

[3:17] our potential, our cognitive abilities,

[3:19] telepathy, ESP, empathy, all of those

[3:22] kinds of things.

[3:24] We're living limits that we have

[3:26] inherited from other people. Divinity is

[3:30] our ability to embrace those limits and

[3:32] enjoy them in our lives. That's

[3:35] divinity, all right?

[3:46] The struggle between good and evil

[3:49] is a struggle to deny us our divinity.

[3:52] Let me show you why. Let me show you why

[3:54] this is. And I talk about this in the

[3:56] book, but not to the detail that I'm I'm

[3:58] sharing with you today. That's why I'm

[4:00] doing it here today.

[4:01] Because all of this is the context

[4:04] for everything we're seeing happening in

[4:06] our lives. This struggle between good

[4:08] and evil.

[4:11] It has defined all of human history.

[4:14] All of human history has happened within

[4:17] the umbrella, within the context. I

[4:19] think many of you You know I'm a

[4:20] scientist. I'm a scientist. I was

[4:23] trained as a systems thinker.

[4:26] So, a systems thinker looks at the big

[4:29] big picture to see where everything fits

[4:32] and then goes into the details to see

[4:35] where those details fit in the big

[4:36] picture.

[4:37] When I look at the world out out my

[4:40] window right now and as I travel this

[4:42] world,

[4:43] what I see makes no sense because I was

[4:45] never given the context.

[4:47] I had to to study, do the research,

[4:50] travel, go to the ancient temples, to

[4:52] the ancient texts to understand what I'm

[4:54] saying to you right now. It is this

[4:57] ancient struggle that is the context.

[5:00] It's the glue that's holding everything

[5:02] together. It's defining all of human

[5:04] history. It's defining our world right

[5:05] now. Right now, everything you're

[5:08] seeing, whether you're talking about

[5:10] Russia and Ukraine or you're talking

[5:11] about what's happening in the Middle

[5:12] East or

[5:14] talking about the the social changes

[5:16] that are tearing our families apart,

[5:19] tearing our communities apart.

[5:21] They're all expressions of good and

[5:22] evil.

[5:23] Now, sometimes that evil is called

[5:25] kinetic. You're seeing it on your

[5:27] screen.

[5:28] Kinetic evil is where people are boots

[5:30] on the ground, where they're actually

[5:32] there's conflict. They're fighting one

[5:33] another.

[5:35] But there's a lot of evil that is not

[5:37] kinetic. There are many expressions of

[5:39] evil. Once you begin to recognize them,

[5:42] then you are empowered to navigate in in

[5:45] way and make good choices.

[5:48] Sometimes that evil is psychological.

[5:50] We're seeing this a lot in our lives

[5:53] today. When you are engaged in social

[5:57] programs or social media that creates

[5:59] fear or feelings of guilt

[6:02] or makes one another suspicious of other

[6:04] people in our family or our friends and

[6:06] neighbors,

[6:07] that's what divides our communities.

[6:09] That's what divides our society. That is

[6:11] an expression of evil.

[6:13] Breaking the social bonds that hold us

[6:16] together as community is an expression

[6:18] of evil.

[6:19] It's playing out in society in the

[6:21] conversations of culture and gender and

[6:23] family.

[6:24] Now, I want to be really clear, really

[6:26] clear about this. All of these are

[6:28] important. We need to talk about gender.

[6:30] We need to talk about culture. We need

[6:32] to talk about family, but look at what's

[6:34] happened.

[6:35] What's happening is powers that be, and

[6:37] we'll talk about those powers that be in

[6:39] a few minutes.

[6:41] They are using these issues that could

[6:45] be discussed in kindness

[6:48] to bring us together

[6:50] into a tightly commit knit community,

[6:53] but they're using these issues as

[6:55] weapons. They're weaponized to divide

[6:57] us.

[6:58] And you're seeing the same thing I'm

[7:00] seeing. Man, it's happening at the

[7:01] family dinner table. It's happening

[7:02] between co-workers and friends.

[7:05] Uh it is happening between husbands and

[7:07] wives, whether it's political, economic,

[7:09] whatever it is. You know what I'm

[7:10] talking about here. These are

[7:12] expressions of evil that divide us. It's

[7:15] playing out in the algorithms on social

[7:17] media. All the social media that's out

[7:20] there that limits our ability to

[7:22] communicate with one another and creates

[7:24] ridicule and shame and hate. It's not

[7:27] our natural state. It's not our natural

[7:29] state. We are nature. In nature, we are

[7:33] all about cooperation and love and

[7:36] empathy and sympathy.

[7:38] But these algorithms

[7:40] are driving us to be something that we

[7:43] were never never meant to be. It's

[7:44] playing out in entertainment

[7:47] as the normalization

[7:49] of evil. Now, for copyright purposes, I

[7:52] can't I can't

[7:54] put this on the screen.

[7:56] But if you want an example of this, go

[7:58] to YouTube, check out the Grammy

[8:00] presentations 2023.

[8:02] Look at the musical performance by Sam

[8:05] Smith.

[8:06] Uh and you'll see a perfect example of

[8:08] what I mean, the normalization, the

[8:11] acceptance

[8:12] of expressions of evil in our everyday

[8:16] lives. Sometimes the evil is

[8:19] technological.

[8:21] And that's what I'm going to focus on

[8:22] today. All those other things are

[8:24] important. The book is about our

[8:26] humanness, and the technology

[8:28] is being used to replace our humanness.

[8:32] And that's what I want to talk to you

[8:33] about. Sometimes the evil is technology.

[8:36] There is a movement right now

[8:39] to replace our biology with technology.

[8:43] And they're especially targeting young

[8:44] kids, AI, uh computer chips in the

[8:47] brain, chemicals in the blood, RFID

[8:49] chips under the skin, nano sensors

[8:52] moving throughout the body, transmitting

[8:53] information to to large databases run by

[8:56] AI.

[8:58] Uh all of this is happening right now.

[9:00] This isn't, you know, a future sci-fi

[9:03] scenario. It's happening now

[9:05] because the technology's available. It's

[9:07] how it's implemented. It's the purpose

[9:09] of the technology.

Divinity, according to Braden, is defined as the powers or forces that transcend perceived human limits—the capacity to access healing, intuition, empathy, and cognitive abilities beyond the artificial ceilings we've inherited from culture. It's not supernatural but describes our actual human potential.
Braden argues that this ancient spiritual conflict is the underlying context of all human history and still shapes events today. It manifests in military conflict, family breakdown, algorithm-driven division, and the technological replacement of human biology—all expressions of one dynamic aimed at denying humans access to their divinity.
Braden distinguishes kinetic evil (direct violence), psychological evil (fear and division via media), cultural evil (weaponization of social topics), and technological evil (replacement of human biology with artificial systems). Each serves the goal of fragmenting human connection and agency.
Algorithms are engineered to drive fear, shame, ridicule, and suspicion—states opposite to our natural inclination toward cooperation and empathy. This breaks social bonds at every level, from family dinners to community and society, fragmenting the collective trust necessary to recognize manipulation.
Not technology itself, but the deliberate use of technology to replace human biology, autonomy, and decision-making. He points to brain chips, nano-sensors, and AI-driven systems targeting young people as part of a larger effort to remove human agency and divinity from the equation.
According to Braden, recognition itself is empowering. Once you see the pattern—the ancient struggle and its multiple expressions—you're able to navigate choices consciously and resist manipulation. Awareness creates a space for discernment and freedom.
