96 Miles of Revolutionary Love: Immigration and Resistance

On the final stretch of a 96-mile walk from Adelanto Detention Center to the federal building in Los Angeles, the energy crackles. Drums echo. Car horns sound in solidarity. Pilgrims move through extreme heat, their bodies a statement—one last day of witness, six more miles to cover. This is not a march organized from above; it is a collective walking toward a demand: that families remain whole, that detention ends, that love be the architecture of resistance.

The pilgrimage's spiritual core lies not in abstraction but in method. Where others might organize a rally, these activists chose a 96-mile walk—a distance that cannot be rushed, cannot be performed casually, cannot be separated from the bodies and breath of those who undertake it. The detention center sits on the land; the federal building receives power from the same government. The pilgrimage threads the needle between them, making visible what is ordinarily hidden: the geography of detention, the human cost measured in footsteps.

Flowers as a Language of Power

The image that anchors this work emerged a summer earlier, when activists from Los Angeles placed flowers at the feet of ICE agents. It is a deceptively simple gesture—flowers, fragile and perishable, offered to armed agents of the state. Yet within that offering lives a complete philosophy of resistance. Flowers do not beg; they witness. They do not entreat a murderer to reconsider; they assert, through their presence, an alternative way of being in the world. Revolutionary love, as articulated by this movement, names something distinct from pacifism or appeasement. It is a refusal to become hardened in response to hardening. It is a commitment to see the humanity in opponents—not to capitulate, but to remain rooted in one's own humanity while standing against systems designed to erase it.

That summer action did not end when participants went home. The witnessing continued through the following year as ICE expanded its dragnet, moving from Portland to Chicago to Minneapolis. Each city's detention centers filled with relatives, loved ones whose names the pilgrims knew. Each expansion met ongoing resistance—not a seasonal campaign but a sustained insistence. The pilgrimage to LA represents the crystallization of that year-long commitment: a physical, undeniable statement that families matter more than government enforcement.

Where Courage Lives in Collective Movement

There is a particular courage required to walk 96 miles in extreme heat. The body cannot fake commitment over that distance. Blisters form. Thirst becomes literal. The march does not allow for the abstraction that rallies sometimes permit—the sense of having "done something" and then moving on. Every mile requires recommitment. Every mile tests whether the initial motivation holds true in the face of physical discomfort.

That courage multiplies when multiplied. Emma, walking alongside, carries it. The pilgrims who began at Adelanto carry it forward to those who join on the final day. The drummers and horn-honkers in the street add theirs. This is not inspiration flowing in one direction—from a leader to followers—but a circulation of energy, a mutual recognition that shows up as sound, presence, solidarity. Together, courage becomes not an individual trait but a collective condition.

The Infrastructure of Care: Bond Funds and Radical Interdependence

The pilgrimage does not end with arrival at the federal building. Nor does resistance end with bearing witness. The organizations behind this movement—Clue Justice, Nefes, LA Voice, and others—have established a bond fund, a material structure designed to turn solidarity into liberation. Money pooled allows people detained at Adelanto, and across the country's expanding detention network, to rejoin their families. The bond fund names a truth: that immigration enforcement is a debt system, a way of transforming human migration into monetary obligation. The counter-strategy is equally structural—raising money to pay what the system demands, not because the debt is just, but because families cannot wait for justice to be slow.

This is a radical inversion of how such movements are often framed. There is no plea that "if only the government would listen." There is no faith in appeals to better angels. Instead, there is a clear-eyed recognition of how the system operates and a strategic choice to fund escape routes within it. This is care as resistance. This is the commitment that "we carry each other through the impossible."

Witnessing and Insistence: The Year-Long Choice

Resistance sustained across a year—from summer action in LA through the pilgrimage months later—reveals a choice about how to live. It is easy to resist when momentum is high, when the streets are full, when media attention is present. The harder work is maintaining witness and insistence when ICE has moved to another city, when local news cycles have shifted, when the initial moral clarity of the moment has given way to the grinding work of spring, summer, and fall. Yet this is when the work matters most, because it is when resistance is most likely to fade.

The pilgrimage's timing—joining on the final day—carries a message: we are here for the finish line. We see you. We have not forgotten. This is not symbolic gesturing but a substantive physical presence at a moment when legal infrastructure, policy pressure, and the literal movement of bodies toward the seat of power converge.

Where to go from here

For those moved by this work, the call is explicit: support the bond fund at lasacredresistance.org/adelanto-to-dtla-pilgrimage. But the larger invitation extends beyond donation. It asks: What does it mean to resist not seasonally but across the year? What does it mean to show up on the final day, not the first? What does it mean to carry flowers—or whatever your tradition holds as sacred—into spaces designed by fear? And finally: How do we learn to see each other not as strangers or enemies but as beloveds whose liberation is bound to our own?

[0:00] Hey beloveds, we are on the Ottoanto

[0:03] pilgrimage here with my teammate Emma

[0:07] and we are joining these pilgrims who've

[0:09] been marching, walking in extreme heat,

[0:13] 96 miles from Ottoant Detention Center

[0:17] to the federal building in LA and we're

[0:19] joining them on this final day to walk

[0:21] the last six miles with them. You can

[0:23] feel the energy in the street, people

[0:26] coming out to drum and cheer us on and

[0:29] honk. And it's been extraordinary to

[0:32] feel how much our resistance last summer

[0:36] in LA where we showed up with flowers,

[0:38] placed flowers at the feet of ICE

[0:40] agents, um stood strong in the face of

[0:43] men with machine guns to stand up for

[0:45] our immigrant neighbors to stop families

[0:47] being ripped apart. how we came with so

[0:50] much love, with revolutionary love, and

[0:52] how that has never ended. That we

[0:55] continued all this year as ICE began to

[0:58] move on to other cities, from Portland

[0:59] to Chicago to to Minneapolis, as our

[1:03] detention centers began to be filled

[1:05] with uh our loved ones. We have not

[1:08] stopped resisting um our witness and our

[1:13] insistence on reuniting separated

[1:16] families. um will not tire. We will only

[1:20] get bolder and louder and stronger

[1:23] together. And so if you're watching this

[1:26] and you would like to support what's

[1:28] happening here in LA, I mean, people are

[1:30] marching in everywhere from [laughter]

[1:32] Texas um to Louisiana to here in LA. If

[1:36] you would like to support what's

[1:37] happening here in LA today, donate to

[1:39] the bond fund. This is a fund of money

[1:42] that Clue Justice, Nefes, LA Voice,

[1:45] others um are raising money to get folks

[1:49] out of detention and back with their

[1:51] families to support them as much as we

[1:53] can.

[1:58] We carry each other through the

[1:59] impossible.

The Adelanto pilgrimage was a 96-mile walk from Adelanto Detention Center to the federal building in Los Angeles. Pilgrims walked in extreme heat to bear witness against immigration detention and family separation, coordinated by organizations including Clue Justice, Nefes, and LA Voice. The walk represents sustained resistance from summer actions through the following year.
Revolutionary love, as demonstrated through placing flowers at the feet of ICE agents, means refusing to harden or become bitter while standing firmly against unjust systems. It is a commitment to maintain one's own humanity while resisting, not through capitulation but through persistent, embodied witness and presence.
The bond fund, raised by organizations like Clue Justice, Nefes, and LA Voice, collects money to pay bonds and help people detained at Adelanto and other detention centers rejoin their families. It functions as a direct strategy to liberate people from detention rather than waiting for policy change.
During the previous summer in Los Angeles, activists placed flowers at the feet of ICE agents as an act of witness while standing against family separation. This action continued through the year as ICE expanded detention operations to other cities including Portland, Chicago, and Minneapolis.
Pilgrims walked 96 miles total from Adelanto Detention Center, and additional activists joined on the final day to walk the last six miles together to the federal building. The final stretch drew community drummers, supporters honking car horns, and visible collective energy in the streets.
Resistance has been sustained year-round as ICE expanded detention operations across multiple cities. The pilgrimage to LA represents the crystallization of that ongoing commitment—not a seasonal campaign but a maintained insistence on family reunification and an end to detention.
