I Am the Born, I Am the Unborn: Maya and the Divine Mother

On a Sunday morning at the Ramakrishna Monastery in Trabuco Canyon, California, a swami reaches for one of the oldest images in the Vedantic toolkit: a rope lying in a dark room that a frightened traveler swears is a snake. Swami Sarvadevananda, speaking on November 1, 2026, built his lecture around a line he attributed to the Devi Upanishad, in which the Goddess, the divine Mother, declares her own nature: "I am the born, I am the unborn." The talk, published as a 55-minute video, presses a question that is at once metaphysical and deeply personal. If everything we can see is birth, growth, maturity and death, what is the unchanging thing behind it, and how does the unchanging ever seem to change? His answer moves through Brahman, the rope and the snake, the three gunas as tinted lenses, and a reframing of maya as the living power of the Mother rather than a flat illusion.

What Is the Unchanging Behind a Changing World?

The lecture opens with an inventory of change. Trees come up, people are born, plants push through soil, and then everything finishes. The swami asks the room to take that inventory seriously. If life were nothing but a mass of change ending in a void, why would anyone weep, laugh, dance, or bother with school? The question assumes that human beings are looking for something that does not move, and the swami's claim is that the search itself points to a truth.

That truth, in Vedanta, is Brahman. Swami Sarvadevananda describes it in a short string of negations: "Birthless, deathless, endless, beginningless, changeless, timeless." Then he gives the positive side in the classic formula of sat, chit, ananda, which he renders as isness, consciousness, and bliss, "absolute joy." The point is not that Brahman is a remote object somewhere beyond the sky. It is the reality that is present in every moment, the ground that is never absent.

He ties this directly to the individual. Behind the "changing all body mind complex," he says, there is the atman, the unchanging self. That is the source of the hope he describes, the sense that "I don't die with the death of the body." Everything that rises and falls, the waves, ripples and bubbles of experience, rests on a foundation that does not rise and fall. Around the 3:22 mark he states it plainly: there is light behind, there is joy behind, and that joy permeates everywhere.

How Can the Unchanging Appear to Change?

Here the lecture turns to the hard question, which the swami openly admits is still unresolved for most listeners. If Brahman is one, without a second, why does a second seem to arrive? And who made that possible? Vedanta's answer is maya, and the swami's first move is to clear away a misunderstanding about what maya does.

His central image is the rope in the darkness. You see something coiled on the ground and your heart jumps. You feel the fear, you react, you run. The experience is entirely real in its effects. But when you bring a flashlight, you discover that there was never a snake at all, only a rope. The swami puts it this way, around the 5:52 mark: "It is a rope only. Oh when you get frightened it was rope. When you came out to see that it is no snake that's also rope. It was before rope after rope."

The lesson he draws is precise. The fear and the physical reaction are not fake. What is wrong is the interpretation, the reading that turns a rope into a snake. Maya, in this picture, is not a lie told by a demon. It is a misreading that operates through our sensory experience. The reality underneath has not changed at all. It has only been mistaken.

Why Does the World Feel So Real? The 3D Glasses and the Ride

To explain how a misreading can feel so total, the swami turns to a modern example he calls his favorite. Put on 3D glasses at a movie, he says, and the screen becomes a world. A snake seems to strike at you, and you pull back in your seat even though you know you are in a theater. Take the glasses off and the room is simply a room, with a screen showing light and shadow. The experience was real while you wore the lenses. The projection was never what it seemed.

He extends the image to a ride at Universal Studios, where a chair rocks, a screen fills with stars, and within minutes you feel as though you are rocketing through space. "The conception is so real," he says. "It is more than real of our daily life." If human technology can produce such convincing experiences, he argues, then the power that projects an entire cosmos must be vastly greater. The magic we are under, in his telling, is not a trick of a clever machine. It is a cosmic magic whose scale we can hardly register from inside it.

What Are the Three Gunas, and Why Do They Look Like Lenses?

The lenses in the swami's analogy are the three gunas of classical Indian thought: sattva, rajas and tamas. He describes them as the glass through which the manifold universe is seen, and his description is vivid and specific. Sattva is the transparent quality, which gives a clearer view of reality. Rajas is a covering with a red tint, which makes everything look red. Tamas is deep darkness, in which nothing behind can be seen at all.

"Sata quality is transparent quality. It gives you the view of the reality more closely. Rajas is a covering with a red color something showing you everything red. Damas is deep darkness. You cannot see anything what is behind." (Swami Sarvadevananda, Ramakrishna Monastery lecture, Trabuco Canyon, November 1, 2026; around the 9:17 mark)

He then makes the claim that gives the metaphor its weight: these three in permutation and combination have created the whole universe. The gunas are not presented as objects inside the world. They are the way the world is colored for the one who perceives it. Wear them and you see horror, joy, a tiger, a storm. Remove them and the same reality is seen without the tint. This is why the swami keeps returning to the phrase "experience is real but reality is" something else: the experience has force, but the reality it points to does not depend on which lens is in place.

Maya or Mahamaya: Is the World an Illusion or the Mother's Power?

This is the part of the lecture where the swami makes his most distinctive move. The non-dual tradition of Vedanta calls the power of appearance maya. But devotees of the Mother, he says, call it mahamaya, the great maya, and he insists that the difference matters. "No no no it is not maya. It is mahamaya. It is the great mother. It is the great mother divine mother. It is a power."

The image he uses is the ocean. The ocean is calm and serene, and then it swells. That swelling is a power that was already embedded in the ocean, and it turns potential into motion. In the same way, he says, the power inside Brahman becomes kinetic, and the whole manifestation of the cosmos begins. Maya, in this reading, is not a counterfeit reality set against the real one. It is the creative capacity of the real itself, the force that makes "one into the many," which the swami describes as the Mother's own wish.

Around the 10:10 mark he describes the worship side of this understanding. When people practice Mother worship, they speak of maya, but he wants listeners to hear that the word names the cosmic power that creates stars, galaxies, the physical universe, the mental universe, and even what we imagine as heaven. That power, he says, is the Mother.

Are Brahman and Shakti Two Things?

To explain why the unmanifest and the manifest are not separate, the swami offers an analogy from music, which will matter to anyone who has sat with a singer. Imagine a person of great musical talent sitting quietly in a room. You do not yet know that talent exists. Only when the person begins to sing does the talent come out, and it is not something stored in a pocket and taken out now and then. It is springing from the heart and becoming audible. "It is not two things," he says.

In his terms, Brahman is the transcendental reality, the unmanifest, and Shakti is the power that manifests it. Hinduism's images of Shiva and Shakti are, for the swami, a physical representation of this philosophy: the still ground and the dynamic power that is never truly apart from it. The Mother is not a second god standing beside the first. She is the way the one reality shows itself as the many.

The swami also contrasts this with traditions that set up a parallel contesting force against God. He notes that in dualistic religions one usually creates another force to oppose the divine. The Vedantic view he presents has no rival. The transcript of this portion is cut short, but the thrust is clear: maya is the Mother's power working inside a single reality, not an opponent.

What Does It Mean to Live Inside This Understanding?

The lecture does not end in abstraction. The swami returns again and again to the practical consequence. If there is light behind the dark and joy behind the sorrow, then the fearful snake and the frightening tiger can be seen for what they are without denying the fear. He points to the Bhagavad Gita's teaching to take refuge in the divine, and he describes the small ego as the one that fights and struggles, mistaking its wealth, body, and mind for the whole of who it is. The invitation is to find the bigger self, the consciousness that does not change even as everything passes through it.

That is the spine of the talk and the reason it holds up beyond a single Sunday. It gives a way to hold experience without being crushed by it: feel the fear, feel the joy, and keep asking what lens is in place and what is underneath.

Where to go from here

The full lecture, "I am the Born, I am the Unborn," is available on the Ramakrishna Monastery's YouTube channel, and it rewards listening from start to finish, especially the rope-and-snake passage and the sections on maya and Shakti. For the monastery's upcoming talks and activities, visit the Ramakrishna Monastery website at ramakrishnamonastery.org. The Vedanta Society of Southern California, of which the Ramakrishna Monastery is a branch, maintains information about the Trabuco Canyon monastery at vedanta.org/trabuco-canyon-monastery.

If you want to continue on your own, begin with the question the swami started with: when you notice something changing in your life, what is it that notices the change? Stay with that question, and the lecture's central image of the flashlight may begin to make sense from the inside.

[0:26] for

[0:51] Lord lead us from the real lead us from

[0:55] darkness. to light.

[0:58] Lead us from death to immortality

[1:01] and ever more shine in our hearts

[1:04] with your respendant face. Oh peace,

[1:07] peace, peace be unto us all.

[1:11] So today our topic just you heard that I

[1:15] am the born, I am the unborn.

[1:21] So it is a quote from

[1:23] Dvi upanishad

[1:28] and in that dvi upanishad means god as

[1:31] mother the divine

[1:34] and she declares her own real nature.

[1:39] This question comes we look at the world

[1:44] we see the changeful world all the time

[1:48] birth growth

[1:51] maturity death finish

[1:54] again new people are coming out new

[1:57] things are coming out trees are coming

[1:59] plants are coming every time what about

[2:02] this all these changes happening then

[2:04] what we are and where we are and what is

[2:07] our goal and where shall I achieve What

[2:09] should we reach? This is a fundamental

[2:12] question.

[2:14] If you are a mass of just changes only,

[2:17] then who we are?

[2:20] Why are you here? What are you doing

[2:22] here? Why crying? Why weeping? Why

[2:25] smiling? Why dancing? Why going to

[2:27] school, college, education, getting all

[2:30] these things? If it is all a mass of

[2:32] change only and it ends in void, when

[2:36] you die, you do not know where do you

[2:37] go? A person who is living today smiling

[2:40] talking boom where did he go?

[2:44] Is there all changes

[2:47] or there is something behind which is

[2:49] unchanging which you're searching for?

[2:53] And the truth is that unchanging then

[2:57] the question comes if there is

[2:58] unchanging logical question comes how

[3:01] the unchanging becomes changing

[3:04] is a big question. If you said is the

[3:07] truth is the one absolute truth

[3:11] unchanging

[3:12] time space coation cannot do any harm

[3:14] there or change anything impose anything

[3:17] in that if that is the absolute

[3:20] unchanging reality then why this

[3:22] universe of diversity

[3:24] come

[3:27] dissolve

[3:29] this is a big question so here

[3:33] vantic answer you all No vanta says

[3:37] unchanging truth is what?

[3:39] >> Brahman. Very simple. What is Brahman?

[3:43] Birthless, deathless, endless,

[3:45] beginningless, changeless,

[3:48] timeless. That reality which is there

[3:50] all the time. And what it is? It is of

[3:53] the nature of reality isness, s

[3:57] of the nature of chit, consciousness and

[4:01] bliss, joy, absolute joy. So then it

[4:06] makes a sense that there is something

[4:09] unchanging

[4:11] that is birthless that is deathless

[4:13] but this changes happening that's a

[4:16] different question but there is

[4:18] something Brahman says there is a

[4:20] Brahman or your atman that is the

[4:24] unchanging self behind your changing

[4:28] all body mind complex things changing

[4:31] all the time there is a hope that I am

[4:34] something unchanging.

[4:38] I don't die with the death of the body.

[4:41] I don't go to darkness and ignorance.

[4:44] There is light behind. There is joy

[4:46] behind. There's unfathomable joy and

[4:50] infinite joy permeating everywhere. That

[4:52] is the foundation. And on that upon that

[4:56] comes all these waves and ripples and

[4:58] bubbles. But how it happens? How this

[5:01] unchanging will be changing? That's a

[5:03] fundamental question still remains. If

[5:06] you say Brahman is one and without a

[5:08] second then why second come

[5:12] and who made this possible

[5:16] says it's Maya it is nothing has

[5:18] happened

[5:20] you are only mis misinterpreting

[5:24] you misguided

[5:26] you see there in the snake in the

[5:28] darkness and you cry and weep and run

[5:32] and have all the physical reactions go

[5:34] to doctor and do everything but bring a

[5:37] flashlight to see that oh there is no

[5:40] snake at all. It is a rope only. Oh when

[5:43] you get frightened it was rope. When you

[5:46] came out to see that it is no snake

[5:49] that's also rope. It was before rope

[5:52] after rope. Now rope all the time rope.

[5:56] All the time we are such anandu

[6:00] but some misinterpretation has happened

[6:02] because of our sensory experience or

[6:04] whatever

[6:06] and I interpreted it the snake touched

[6:08] my feet and I snake touched my feet

[6:12] imaginary thing you go with the 3D glass

[6:16] I that's my favorite example to teach

[6:19] this ideology of bad

[6:22] you go to the movie and just see

[6:25] to watch a movie with the 3D 3D glass

[6:29] what do you see all these activities are

[6:32] so real and you are in the midst of that

[6:34] snake is biting and as if he's hitting

[6:36] your head and you jump out of his so

[6:39] experience is so real experience is real

[6:43] but reality is so

[6:48] those who get too much frightened they

[6:49] take out the

[6:51] glass and then say oh nothing it is

[6:54] happening in the

[6:57] Take out that glass 3D glass

[7:05] rails

[7:08] 3D three dimension to three dimension of

[7:12] this manifold universe is sata rajas and

[7:17] tamas three gonas

[7:20] three qualities made of that that is the

[7:23] glass made and so long I'm wearing it. I

[7:26] see this horrible world or joyful world,

[7:28] terrible world and this drama is going

[7:30] on. It is so real. Tiger is changing and

[7:33] you're in between that. All these

[7:36] emotions, your heart is palpit

[7:38] palpitation. Everything is happening but

[7:41] it's nothing.

[7:43] You go to Universal Studio and sit in a

[7:45] chair and there is a ride

[7:48] star ride. So you go and sit. You are

[7:51] sitting in the chair. They put a glass

[7:54] and now you see it is seat is little

[7:58] rocking and within few minutes you see

[8:00] you are shooting you in a plane a rocket

[8:03] and you shoot shoot and stars stars

[8:06] stars what is happening where is the

[8:08] stars

[8:10] there is something but where is the star

[8:14] and all the experiences are happening

[8:18] but what it is a misconception

[8:21] nothing is happening. What do you call

[8:24] this? The magic of the world. Present

[8:27] scientific world have created so much

[8:29] magic, so much reality. The conception

[8:33] is so real. It is more than real of our

[8:35] daily life.

[8:38] So if that is so human brain can create

[8:40] this whatever the brain who has created

[8:43] this entire universe, he has more

[8:46] magical power and that magic we are

[8:49] under the spell of that. What is that

[8:51] magic power you call bed maya?

[8:55] What is maya? Maya of the three D eye

[8:59] glass satwa

[9:03] rajas and tamas. Sata quality is

[9:06] transparent quality. It gives you the

[9:08] view of the reality more closely.

[9:11] Rajas is a covering with a red color

[9:14] something showing you everything red.

[9:17] Damas is deep darkness. You cannot see

[9:20] anything what is behind. And these three

[9:23] permutation and combination has created

[9:25] this whole universe. Bedantu says it is

[9:28] Maya.

[9:30] But bhas

[9:32] the worshippers of

[9:36] other aspect of spirituality.

[9:38] They called it is maya. No no no it is

[9:41] not maya. It is mahamaya.

[9:45] It is the great great mother.

[9:49] It is the great mother divine mother. It

[9:52] is a power. It's a power behind

[9:56] it. It was embedded in Brahman and power

[9:59] swells up. The ocean is calm and serene.

[10:04] It swells up. that power potential power

[10:08] become kinetic

[10:10] and all this manifestation of the whole

[10:13] cosmos starts over there. So it is said

[10:17] then what is that? It is maya but in the

[10:20] worship aspect when it comes to the

[10:24] practice of mother worship they call it

[10:27] maya. No no no no it is don't call it

[10:29] maya. It is the shaky, the power, the

[10:32] cosmic power which creates stars and

[10:35] galaxies which creates everything in the

[10:38] physical universe, mental universe,

[10:40] heaven, everything you think about it is

[10:42] done by that magical big cosmic power

[10:46] which is go out of all creation and then

[10:49] they call it call it mother. So the

[10:52] mother the divine mother it is shy

[10:56] that's why in Hinduism they worship

[10:59] Shiva shaky you see lord Shiva and there

[11:02] is a shy is a physical representation of

[11:05] this high philosophy

[11:07] that shy is embedded in the original

[11:13] reality which is called Brahman

[11:16] shy manifest sometimes sometimes does

[11:21] Not my common example suppose you are

[11:24] sitting over here there may be great

[11:26] musician when you are sitting here I do

[11:29] not know

[11:31] that music talent

[11:33] until it manifest no but when you sing

[11:37] the music talent comes out of you it is

[11:40] not it is not separable it is not two

[11:43] things okay here is the music talent and

[11:45] here the person you pocket it sometimes

[11:47] and take out sometime it is not like

[11:49] that it is springing from your own heart

[11:52] and manifesting and sometimes it is not.

[11:56] When it is not then it is called the

[11:58] transcendental reality we call shak

[12:02] Brahman.

[12:04] And when it manifest with this power it

[12:06] is called shi with that tremendous shy

[12:09] maha maya we worship that as divine

[12:12] mother. Maha maya great mother great

[12:16] Maya but Maham maya means a divine

[12:19] mother and it is her wish she make one

[12:24] into the many.

[12:26] So there is the superishad talks about

[12:29] that this is the maya is a power of

[12:32] Brahman

[12:35] not two one in dualistic religion

[12:39] normally we create another parallel

[12:41] force

[12:44] in say Christianity or in Islam or in

[12:47] somewhere there is a contesting force

[12:50] God is trying to do good but there is a

[12:52] Satan see hiding somewhere he is always

[12:56] competing with God and fighting to

[12:58] defeat the God, God's will, God's

[13:00] purpose. No, but it is not so not true.

[13:06] is the power which is embedded

[13:09] in the reality manifesting as universe

[13:14] and when it is manifesting it is

[13:16] manifestation of variet type

[13:19] good bad beautiful moon moon late night

[13:24] the sun rising the ocean vast ocean the

[13:28] flower blooming the birds are flying

[13:32] everything sweet sweet side also

[13:34] horrible side

[13:36] tremendously evil nature, people,

[13:40] situation, everything is happening. We

[13:43] normally put the blame to a Satan. He is

[13:47] the cause of all these evil things. But

[13:49] it is not three goonas the same reality

[13:52] with the eye glass you see different.

[13:55] Change your eyeglass then you see there

[13:58] is nothing but God. There's nothing but

[14:00] the divine. And that we call as divine

[14:03] mother. So when we see as you are

[14:07] sitting over here it is the divine

[14:09] mother in so many forms. It is that

[14:12] absolute satan Brahman there is nothing

[14:16] but that one is appearing in so many

[14:20] forms and names and forms. It is three

[14:22] satas and tamas getting manifested

[14:26] and it is that divine power we call

[14:29] mother which is sometimes silent

[14:33] sometimes manifesting the musician not

[14:36] singing and musician singing the

[14:39] violinist playing the violin and not

[14:42] playing the violin the remaining the

[14:44] truth is the same the power and

[14:47] manifested or unmanifest

[14:50] so this whole World according to this

[14:52] philosophy is a power and its

[14:55] manifestation.

[14:58] Not nothing but the one reality

[15:01] either manifesting or not manifesting.

[15:04] Nothing but the same ocean

[15:07] only by the waves and ripples, a tsunami

[15:11] or a beautiful ride. No people go for

[15:14] skiing. What you call

[15:17] ride? What is that ride? Huh?

[15:22] >> Huh?

[15:24] When the boat go

[15:31] >> hinger.

[15:33] >> Okay. Surfer. Surfer.

[15:35] >> The word is not coming. Surfing.

[15:39] So you when when you want to the real

[15:41] surfers like mild wavesh and it's very

[15:45] enjoyable. They can go and swing like

[15:47] that and got all the top and go down and

[15:49] go down. That's a joy in that. It is a

[15:52] play. But it is a play of on what the

[15:55] ocean one ocean only in the wave form.

[16:01] So and that wave may be s such a

[16:03] terrible wave tsunami. We are frightened

[16:06] out of that. But it's the same power

[16:09] manifested this way or that way. It is

[16:12] the power of the divine. And as we see

[16:15] it is nothing but divine only in the

[16:17] covering of the three goonas.

[16:22] So here comes a big philosophy of seeing

[16:25] God everywhere.

[16:27] Seeing mother everywhere

[16:30] is to see mother everywhere.

[16:33] Nothing else but mother. The mother

[16:36] mother is in the good. Mother is in the

[16:38] bad.

[16:41] Holy mother shari used to say I'm the

[16:44] mother of the bad I am the mother of the

[16:46] good because it is me I have become

[16:52] that is a thing makes our life more

[16:56] joyful and cheerful spiritual life

[16:59] just transforming our outlook from

[17:02] mundane to the spiritual looking at the

[17:04] same world not as we see now in

[17:08] ignorance but to See this as very

[17:12] manifestation of the divine in the form

[17:15] of name and form and qualities. It has

[17:18] not lost it

[17:20] basic nature. It is wave tsunami or a

[17:24] bubble or ripple

[17:27] is nothing but H2O

[17:32] safes are different. Sometimes horrible

[17:34] self, sometimes joyful, cheerful self,

[17:38] but it is the same water content H2O.

[17:41] Similarly, in this vast dimension of

[17:44] creation,

[17:46] it is only that same Brahman in another

[17:48] form we call mother. So when you are

[17:50] seeing the world, it is mother you are

[17:51] seeing. Understand this. When I am

[17:54] seeing you,

[17:56] I am not seeing Brahman. I see the

[18:01] fearful or cheerful or joyful

[18:05] manifestation of that reality in

[18:08] different waveform. So this is called

[18:12] you are seeing mother

[18:14] but you don't recognize it. Mother is

[18:16] the manifestation of that same Brahman

[18:19] just for fun and play.

[18:22] So that's why

[18:25] says Brahman is a Brahman is only one

[18:28] and absolute yet we experience this

[18:31] diverse universe

[18:34] which is born now unborn I do not know

[18:37] what will come up in next century

[18:41] what stars will be new generated and

[18:44] what galaxy of stars will go into the

[18:46] black hole you do not know I do not know

[18:49] so this is all happening

[18:51] in the mystic play. So what is what is

[18:54] born it is all mother. What is unborn

[18:58] that is also the divine mother

[19:00] and then we can make our life every day

[19:03] the divine divine our outlook. So then

[19:07] the philosophical this question as I

[19:09] just the relation between the changeless

[19:12] and the changing universe changeless and

[19:16] changing are not true

[19:18] as I just discussed so long it is this

[19:21] unchanging reality appearing swelling

[19:23] into the form of waves and ripples

[19:26] making this change changeful world

[19:28] therefore then it how it happens says

[19:32] maya

[19:33] maya means that is not there but You are

[19:36] misinterpreting your mind is misreading

[19:39] the fact our mind many times misread the

[19:42] thing. No, someone is coming you misread

[19:45] with some your mind tells you and oh

[19:48] sorry sorry I I I misunderstand you or

[19:51] you hear some word and you understand

[19:53] wrongly understand this misunderstanding

[19:55] is world is it not when you understand

[19:59] that is all joy

[20:01] two people two friends are differenting

[20:03] where understanding and misunderstanding

[20:06] if we discuss the thing why you are

[20:08] fighting with each other we'll find that

[20:10] there is no difference you mean one

[20:14] thing, I mean another thing. My mind

[20:16] interprets one way, your mind interprets

[20:18] another way.

[20:20] Truth remaining the same. So the bacti

[20:24] school or even says that you know this

[20:28] world is maya is Maya

[20:32] Maya. It is the nature the divine mother

[20:37] my I'm the master of the maya is the

[20:39] maha is the brahman

[20:42] and that brahman permeates everywhere

[20:45] and when it is manifested it is also the

[20:47] same brahman therefore maya is the

[20:50] proiti and that prokiti is the power

[20:54] which hidden is called absolute when

[20:57] people go to samadi

[21:00] transcend this world of duality merges

[21:02] into that

[21:03] where many collapses.

[21:07] What remains? Who will say? This person

[21:10] who was trying to understand his mind

[21:13] and intellect and ego all gone,

[21:16] dissolved. It merges into the cosmic

[21:19] one. That is the but when you come down

[21:22] again is this world of appearance or

[21:26] this is called the proiti and that is

[21:28] the power and this this world is the

[21:31] manifestation due to that power

[21:35] there is no world when there is no mind

[21:37] no every day when you go to deep sleep

[21:40] where goes your concept of world

[21:43] this world I'm now so serious no clouded

[21:47] sky the weather is like gloomy all these

[21:50] experiences now but when I go to deep

[21:53] sleep where goes this world beautiful

[21:57] world or horrible world or whatever you

[21:59] say there's no existence of it you go to

[22:02] another realm called dream and the dream

[22:05] also a point comes when you have dream

[22:09] another reality where goes this reality

[22:11] if this is real where does it go when

[22:15] you dream

[22:17] your mind is showing you a dream world.

[22:21] The same mind is showing the gross

[22:22] world. And when mind goes to sleep,

[22:26] where is the world in deep sleep time?

[22:30] If someone goes and

[22:32] praises you to the heaven or someone

[22:35] goes and curses you, do you have any

[22:37] effect of it? Because you don't know.

[22:40] There's no existence of this world.

[22:42] Neither this world, neither the dream

[22:44] world. So this is the point

[22:48] that that reality remains unchanged. It

[22:51] does not have. So this is proiti this

[22:53] jagat this world is a manifestation of

[22:55] that infinite energy and my is the

[22:58] Brahman or ishara the lord god who whose

[23:03] power manifest he said

[23:05] I am alone I'll be many

[23:10] that reality becomes many. It is not

[23:13] many appears like many and there is a

[23:16] joy in becoming many. No all the

[23:19] creation creation is many. You want to

[23:22] paint something you you create so many

[23:25] shades of color or in the same color

[23:28] deeper depth lighter depth and you

[23:31] create creation means like that. Look at

[23:33] all the paintings here. It is all the

[23:36] variation variance of the color

[23:39] otherwise it is no creation. So to that

[23:42] for that mi who does that I am the may

[23:45] the owner of this maya maya is belongs

[23:49] to me that means it is the power of the

[23:52] brahman

[23:54] and how to get out of it bacti school

[23:56] teaches us

[23:58] take surrender

[24:00] this is cosmic power what will you do

[24:02] say oh mother let thy will be done make

[24:06] me your child take my lord

[24:08] responsibility

[24:10] That's why Bhagavan Bhagat Gita says

[24:16] this Maya is it is divine

[24:22] made of the threeasi

[24:26] maya. It is my

[24:29] magical power

[24:31] to manifest myself in millions of ways.

[24:35] It is my wish I wanted and I have become

[24:38] so much. When it becomes the wave

[24:41] becomes comes in the calm surface of the

[24:43] ocean. Every wave comes up they're not

[24:47] different but is play of color play of

[24:51] the waves rose one after another love

[24:55] happiness misery fight contesting all

[24:59] these things happen in the expressed

[25:03] world but the reality remaining the same

[25:06] the same ocean. So mom

[25:09] now you are in trouble. We are in

[25:12] trouble. I do not know the play of the

[25:15] divine. It is mother's play going on. I

[25:17] do not know. And when it comes upon me,

[25:20] someone jumps upon me, I cry and weep. I

[25:24] suffer misery. Old age, young,

[25:28] relationship, financial crisis, good

[25:32] situation, bad situation, everything is

[25:35] tormenting us. What is the way out?

[25:39] Bhagat Gita says take refuge in me.

[25:43] Come to me. Say I am enough. I have no

[25:47] power. Please help me.

[25:49] Please help me that I let me understand

[25:51] that you are playing with me as a danger

[25:55] or as a sweetness. You come to me

[25:58] wearing different mask. Is it a

[26:00] beautiful idea? when he gets up someone

[26:03] is giving a hard time to me I think he's

[26:06] a bad guy I a good guy I'm being

[26:09] tortured by that fool he's taking

[26:12] advantage of me this is the normal

[26:14] standard we think always you know but

[26:17] now spiritualize it you say oh mother

[26:22] you are coming wearing this mask of

[26:25] devil

[26:26] and acting upon me and trying to give me

[26:29] torture but I understand it is you

[26:30] playing with me

[26:33] then the secret is exposed. Then what

[26:36] happens? Ma then opens the space. Yeah,

[26:39] you recognize me. Thank you.

[26:43] That that which is terrible,

[26:46] that which is very difficult to swallow

[26:49] becomes a subject of great joy in the

[26:53] form of that's why mother said you take

[26:55] refuge in me. Then Maya,

[27:01] you take refuge in the divine mother. I

[27:04] am everywhere in the stars and galaxies

[27:07] down to the clippers and plants and

[27:09] every being created.

[27:12] There you take refuge in my divine self.

[27:18] I will take out the veil of your Maya

[27:21] eyeglass. I will take out. Then you see

[27:23] that you are perfectly seated in your

[27:25] own movie seat and munching some

[27:29] popcorn.

[27:31] Nothing has happened. All these terrible

[27:34] experiences are just like a dream or

[27:37] some some magical thing has happened. We

[27:40] understand we are untouched by anything.

[27:43] We are the birthless deathless reality.

[27:45] I am in the lap of the divine mother.

[27:48] Nothing can touch me. So that experience

[27:50] comes. That's why his suggestion Bhagat

[27:53] Gita 7th chapter 14 verse says that if

[27:58] one takes refuge in me

[28:01] then he will be

[28:04] I will take out the veil of Maya. I

[28:07] wanted to play. Sometimes mom plays with

[28:10] the children no wearing different mask

[28:13] and playing and sometimes the child is

[28:15] smiling. Sometimes frightened. No we are

[28:17] like that. It is God the Lord is so many

[28:21] ways in our life. It comes as a terrible

[28:24] form and good form. But it's very

[28:27] difficult to accept the terrible form

[28:29] first. But it is all mother. There is

[28:32] nothing but mother.

[28:35] That's why

[28:38] says maya

[28:40] this may belongs to only God. The

[28:44] absolute

[28:46] maya belongs to Brahman.

[28:49] Maya's power. Mind is a power

[28:52] which is that that power

[28:55] one appearing as many and appearing in

[28:59] the world form of the world and this pan

[29:02] is going on but you know one devote

[29:05] asked Ramach Krishna it is fun for

[29:07] mother

[29:09] but it is difficult for us is not mom is

[29:12] playing the pun but we are crying and

[29:15] weeping our life situation when it comes

[29:18] in our life situation It is no fun for

[29:20] me.

[29:23] Then Ramakrishna said then who are you?

[29:29] Where do you come from? It is all ma

[29:32] mother. Then where you are bringing your

[29:34] ego? That is your ignorance. Cut that

[29:38] ego. And that is the philosophy of all

[29:40] religion. Cross cut ego. That's a

[29:44] spirituality.

[29:45] Your small ego, petty ego, cut it. Our

[29:49] small ego is the play of all harm in our

[29:53] life is the small ego fight. I fight

[29:55] with you when my ego your ego.

[30:00] My understanding your understanding. So

[30:02] I I I I what I not my big eye. I am a

[30:08] child of mother divine. We are you are

[30:11] also child of my mother divine. I am

[30:13] also child of mother divine. If you go

[30:15] to the mother the solution comes and we

[30:18] come back from mother to this little

[30:20] petty eye then starts fight. It is

[30:23] called the bida or vidaaya.

[30:27] Bida means knowledge which leads us

[30:30] towards knowledge that this is the

[30:33] knowledge that which power which is the

[30:37] detachment or power of revelation.

[30:42] This ma maya plays in two roles. One to

[30:48] to take us away from

[30:50] that consciousness that reality

[30:54] which is by ignorance by attachment. I

[30:58] ego my ego I am such and such. I am

[31:02] ruling the world. I can kill the world.

[31:04] I can destroy the world. I can I can

[31:06] rule. I I I I. The whole world is a

[31:10] fight of small eye

[31:12] but not of the big eye. If I give up my

[31:15] small eye and just drop into the big eye

[31:18] then you and me are same.

[31:21] So this is the study that maya this

[31:24] mahamaya since maya in vanta works in

[31:27] two areas. One it releases us from

[31:30] bondage

[31:32] one entangles us into bondage.

[31:35] When it entangles

[31:37] this our ignorance is identifying with

[31:40] the body and mind and this my wealth and

[31:42] prosperity and property and education

[31:44] and all these glorious things I am proud

[31:46] of it but what I cannot take anything

[31:49] when I die

[31:52] everything should have to be here even

[31:53] this body will be here

[31:59] that is aida because it's taking me from

[32:02] the wisdom away I am unborn born versus

[32:06] I am subject to death and decay.

[32:10] I am free. No, I am bound slave of the

[32:12] body and mind and health condition and

[32:15] aches and pains and emotions and

[32:18] nightmare. I'm having what is called

[32:22] tension anxiety attack. Why?

[32:27] I'm holding on to my small eye.

[32:30] There is a bigger eye. Jump into the

[32:32] bigger eye. That is called the

[32:34] mahammaya. And when you jump into the

[32:36] bigger eye, you get detached from the

[32:39] small eye. You know leech. How leech

[32:43] moves le moves holding the one face here

[32:48] and tries to find a solid

[32:51] next leap something solid and then

[32:54] finding the solid something he lives

[32:56] like that. So that is the leachch

[33:00] you have to attach and detach. attach to

[33:03] that and then detach. So our spiritual

[33:06] life is all detaching detaching

[33:10] detaching detaching from the individual

[33:14] ignorance of body mind identity and

[33:18] being absorbed in that. Look at our life

[33:21] from morning till night we live in our

[33:24] little eye.

[33:27] He looked at me frowning this way.

[33:31] Oh, he praised me. I a doll in the hand

[33:34] of others because I attach to myself.

[33:37] You praise me. Ah, I am so great. You

[33:40] say something about me. Oh, I am gone.

[33:43] So, everyone is making me a puppet in

[33:45] their hand. We are big powerful people

[33:49] but you in your personal life you look

[33:51] at that we are slave of everybody. Why?

[33:55] Every anyone can make me cry or any man

[33:59] can falsely pump pamper me and balloon

[34:02] foo and then boom I'm big and then

[34:05] another person can punch boom gun.

[34:09] So why

[34:11] we are not this

[34:13] but we have that divine entity behind

[34:15] me. It is equal divine mother as you are

[34:18] talking about or you can say this is a

[34:20] Brahman.

[34:22] Huh? But what is I am? This is the to

[34:27] identify with that we need to have

[34:29] attachment and detachment. Bida maya

[34:32] bida means knowledge wisdom that is also

[34:35] maya. But bida means it releases us from

[34:38] bondage. When I say no I am not this but

[34:41] I am that. I have a divine content in

[34:44] me.

[34:46] And my ignorant mind says I am the body

[34:49] mind and emotions and all these things.

[34:51] bundle of emotions, body, mind and

[34:53] things.

[34:55] Now he said no no no I am beyond that I

[34:57] have that eternal self behind our

[35:00] actions. So that is the two mahamaya or

[35:04] mother bananto we call maya have two

[35:07] power one to conceal

[35:10] want to reveal

[35:12] one is concealing power that's called

[35:15] ignorant

[35:17] action and what is bida is a knowledge

[35:20] which reveals reveals the truth to in me

[35:25] and in the whole world I look at that so

[35:29] that's why in the Maybe upon we read

[35:33] that the all the gods the story goes

[35:35] like that

[35:37] all the gods

[35:39] they were overwhelmed with the power of

[35:42] the divine mother and appeared and

[35:45] mother said that can you tell me who are

[35:49] you mother all the gods assembled and

[35:53] they prayed and asked divine mother they

[35:56] says surva

[35:58] all these gods

[36:04] approached before the Di

[36:07] and what they said

[36:10] Mahadevi. Oh mother divine who are you?

[36:13] Can you tell me who are you? Even the

[36:15] gods cannot understand because they are

[36:18] created.

[36:20] The created cannot know the cause of

[36:22] creation.

[36:24] You know a child cannot know his

[36:26] mother's birth but man knows the birth

[36:29] of the child. If God is the creator all

[36:32] the cosmic mother is the creator she

[36:34] knows everyone's birth but they cannot

[36:37] know unless it is revealed by the grace

[36:40] of the mother. So that question was

[36:43] praised and shi

[36:46] then the mother said responded to that

[36:48] question

[36:52] I am of the nature of Brahman. My nature

[36:54] is Brahman. I am Brahman. First question

[36:58] responded I am that birthless deathless

[37:00] changeless

[37:02] that infinite absolute. There is no two.

[37:05] There is no many. And then

[37:10] jagat this jagat this universe

[37:14] manifested ma from me sprung from me. It

[37:18] has come from my my exp existence I

[37:23] spring I have done it myself. Every

[37:26] world has come out from me which is of

[37:29] the nature of purusha and prakiti.

[37:31] Purusha proiti means not men and women.

[37:35] Anything which is ja matter

[37:39] and anything that is conscious

[37:43] you can say simply you can say the rocks

[37:46] and mountains

[37:48] like those there's no life in it there

[37:53] is life in another sense but I'm for

[37:55] discussion sake I'm saying it is called

[37:57] jara matter

[37:59] and prokiti

[38:02] which is moving

[38:04] so jara

[38:05] And

[38:07] all this entire universe

[38:10] it is it has come out from me. That

[38:13] means it including all good, all bad.

[38:16] Whatever you see, vision, experience, it

[38:19] is only my expression. I am in this

[38:22] manifested universe. Jagatum

[38:27] when this world becomes void

[38:32] when every

[38:34] sleep.

[38:37] No, it is so real. Now I see I feel I'm

[38:42] hungry I'm thirsty I'm angry I'm upset

[38:48] so all these has come out of me

[38:56] I am joy you find the spark of joy

[38:58] anywhere it is I am that and where you

[39:02] find not joy

[39:04] some depressed something depressed

[39:06] something sad something S it is also me

[39:09] there see

[39:12] to see God everywhere mind it

[39:15] and this idea

[39:18] this

[39:20] is called

[39:24] nondual with idea the power idea

[39:28] it is it does not make any distinction

[39:32] between good and bad it is only the same

[39:36] reality manifesting. This is the idea of

[39:38] banta. That's why ultimately one can try

[39:41] to absorb this idea and then see god's

[39:45] hand in so-called which is not good.

[39:50] We see the immediate thing immediate

[39:52] good and bad has no meaning

[39:55] things have happened. How many good

[39:57] things happen in our all life? How many

[39:59] bad things have happened in but that

[40:01] life goes on.

[40:03] Something with me is there unchanging.

[40:06] It is standing there. Good and bad,

[40:08] happiness, misery, pleasure, pain,

[40:10] suffering, anxieties, worries,

[40:12] everything is coming like a real

[40:15] and here is a projection lamp. I the

[40:18] luminous lamp standing all the time and

[40:22] don't do anything only manifesting to

[40:25] the maya screen and the maya veil the

[40:28] real and the whole projection is coming

[40:31] out. So whatever you are seeing you are

[40:33] seeing nothing but the light transmitted

[40:35] through the veil of maya. So therefore

[40:44] I am joy and bliss. Wherever you find

[40:47] any joy and bliss any it is me and where

[40:51] there is also sadness and suffering it

[40:53] is also me.

[40:56] Do you believe it? very difficult to

[40:59] accept this philosophy. No, I am in

[41:03] light. I am in darkness. If I say, do

[41:06] you believe it?

[41:08] There is no darkness anywhere.

[41:11] Everywhere is light. But I said today

[41:13] was dark night.

[41:22] They all the animal world in the forest

[41:26] they go for their prey and during night

[41:28] they see much clearly but rather they

[41:31] daytime they become blind

[41:33] we become what you say light it is

[41:36] blindness for them so there is light

[41:40] scientifically if we say frequency is

[41:42] the question no dazzling light comes

[41:45] before me I will not see anything

[41:48] sometimes I go to speak somewhere they

[41:50] put such a dazzling light I don't see

[41:52] the audience at all it is total dark but

[41:56] it is dark no dazzling light is beyond

[42:00] the range of my eye to perceive that

[42:03] range we call darkness here darkness

[42:06] below but everywhere there is some wave

[42:10] light wave so similarly everywhere there

[42:14] is that divine

[42:16] it is manifested in which degree and who

[42:20] is perceiving that

[42:23] so I am just today this lecture is not

[42:27] for giving lecture or talk just apply

[42:30] that apply this formula in your

[42:32] day-to-day life who is coming with a

[42:35] smile in hand try to think oh it is the

[42:38] divine mother coming to me in the garb

[42:40] of sweetness it is a divine mother

[42:44] coming to me and giving hard time to me

[42:47] is mother because one has become

[42:51] No other force. No other Satan is doing

[42:53] anything. It is a play, the fun, the joy

[42:57] of the divine. And I am a part of that

[42:59] joy.

[43:01] Let us play our role in the best

[43:03] possible way by thinking, elevating our

[43:05] consciousness into that an

[43:16] I cannot get it. I'm a fool. I don't

[43:19] realize I'm ignorant. Yes, in ignorance

[43:23] that is God. In knowledge there is God.

[43:28] What is what is the light and darkness?

[43:32] As I gave the example, there is no

[43:34] darkness anywhere. Light everywhere.

[43:36] Night lamp. Now you bring a night lamp

[43:39] here and put it. You don't feel its

[43:42] presence at all. Okay? And during night

[43:45] all lights are gone. Put the night lamp.

[43:47] See the entire room is lighted is it

[43:49] not? And our eyes get accustomed to that

[43:53] light. So if we have the eye by

[43:56] spiritual practice every day to see the

[43:59] play of the divine, you call it mother,

[44:02] you call it Christ, you call it Buddha,

[44:04] you call it Rama, you call it Krishna,

[44:07] you call it Madura, you call it

[44:08] Masarati, Mahalakmi or whatever name you

[44:11] give, forget that. If that light can be

[44:16] perceived in both the cases then life

[44:20] becomes we conquer life then that's

[44:22] conquering the life is that to find joy

[44:26] in all the facets of experience and

[44:29] expressions that's why the persons who

[44:33] get into this there is no enemy for them

[44:37] they say that who enemy comes that story

[44:39] is there there swami

[44:43] and he was going somewhere and somebody

[44:47] beat him to for what reason I do not

[44:50] know when he was taken back to their

[44:53] monastery and someone is feeding him he

[44:56] was unconscious for such a long time and

[44:59] when someone is panning and feeding some

[45:02] warm milk and he got back to his

[45:04] consciousness the first question someone

[45:07] asked who has done this to you what did

[45:11] you do you don't do anything who have

[45:12] beaten you to this condition.

[45:15] Some fanatics did something but he said

[45:18] no

[45:20] he who is feeding me milk

[45:23] did the same person who beat me

[45:27] could you say so understand the point

[45:31] who have beaten me too

[45:34] this unconscious state I was so long

[45:36] unconscious about my yeah physically I

[45:39] was wounded

[45:41] he who did that same Mother

[45:45] is now feeding me milk.

[45:48] See you jump into the nondual experience

[45:52] from the duality to in or normal

[45:54] solution will be what? Oh that person

[45:56] has done catch him give it to police

[45:59] find out where he's gone what there is a

[46:01] normal way and that does not solve the

[46:03] problem.

[46:05] My suffering does not go away but it

[46:07] suits the heart as you know. Oh mother,

[46:10] you came in this form and now you are

[46:12] feeding me the same milk. Children

[46:15] sometimes not in America but in other

[46:17] countries India when if some children

[46:20] does something wrong mom gives a a few

[46:23] slaps

[46:25] here don't do that

[46:28] then what happened but again mother

[46:31] giving a few slaps and then then the

[46:33] baby is crying takes the baby in his arm

[46:37] and lovingly caringly and doing it is

[46:40] the same mother same mother who has

[46:42] beaten and who is now caring and

[46:44] fostering the all the needs of the

[46:47] child. So see this is the way to look at

[46:50] the life in every anand or in oran

[46:55] or every question of your knowledge or

[46:58] ignorance brahma

[47:04] I have become the five elemental thing.

[47:06] What are the five elemental thing?

[47:08] Water, air, fire, space and earth. The

[47:12] all the material thing which is this

[47:14] earth is constituted. We are breathing

[47:17] air. We are drinking water. No this is

[47:20] the fundamental elements. Five elements.

[47:22] It is me.

[47:24] Here divine mother is saying it is me.

[47:26] When you look at the water don't look at

[47:28] water. Now onward is the divine mother

[47:31] to give us sustenance. She is in the

[47:33] form of water. Huh? So in the fire

[47:37] without fire we cannot survive cooking

[47:40] and internal in our body the all the

[47:43] digestive energy is going on there is

[47:46] some heat energy.

[47:47] All these things try to see mother

[47:49] everywhere mother's presence everywhere

[47:52] in first to see in good and mature later

[47:57] on seeing the same divine mother in what

[48:01] is not good apparently

[48:04] not beneficial for me but there is a

[48:07] lesson behind mother's lesson

[48:15] that's a word I I am

[48:19] I am the entire universe. Mother divine

[48:22] mother is responding who are you? She is

[48:26] saying

[48:29] I am the entire universe. You see

[48:34] a

[48:36] bed this

[48:38] you know four beddas all the vedas that

[48:41] is me and which is not in the vedas

[48:44] there are people who don't believe in

[48:45] bedas that is also that is also me then

[48:49] I say

[48:52] I am knowledge and I am also ignorance

[48:56] no I am also ignorance Ignorance is

[49:02] If you accept ignorance is something

[49:04] other than mother then you accept

[49:06] duality again

[49:09] the vantic background were of woriing

[49:11] mother

[49:14] and he says

[49:18] that is born

[49:21] means no sorry not born which is never

[49:24] born that absolute reality and what you

[49:29] unborn and which is not born yet to be

[49:33] born that is also me to seeing mother in

[49:36] this way that is the power to reveal the

[49:40] truth behind us and these examples are

[49:43] there when the life if you read the life

[49:46] of Ramach Krishna if you like the read

[49:49] the life of Swami Banandanda you'll find

[49:52] these examples Ramachrishna is to see

[49:54] mother everywhere

[49:57] one Auh one day a boy

[50:00] got a grasshopper

[50:03] and a childlike play. He got a stick and

[50:07] was putting through his body. See the

[50:10] condition of the grasshopper

[50:12] and Ramagina seeing that smiled and

[50:14] clapped his hand. He said, "Oh Rama," he

[50:18] called it Rama. You can say, "Oh mother,

[50:20] oh Rama, you are creating your own

[50:23] pain." See you are in the grasshopper.

[50:28] You are in the child.

[50:30] Both you are playing with yourself. See

[50:33] is a divine level of consciousness

[50:37] at the same time.

[50:39] One person in the middle of the Ganga.

[50:43] One boatman was angry with another

[50:46] boatman went into fight and slapped very

[50:49] heavily. And Ramak Krishna was standing

[50:51] on the

[50:53] Dakshin ground facing the Ganga and he

[50:56] cried out and some of his nephew came

[50:59] back what has happened. He said see in

[51:02] his back mark of the five fingers are so

[51:06] stiff and he's in pain.

[51:09] The pain of that who has beating the

[51:14] other boardman. One boardman beating the

[51:18] other boardman. That pain is my pain.

[51:23] Difference is collapse

[51:25] one.

[51:27] If you strike anywhere, it is said you

[51:32] strike anything in the air, its impact

[51:34] will go everywhere. You drop something

[51:37] in the ground, you may not perceive it

[51:40] is not perceivable, but scientifically

[51:42] feeble and feeble and feeble. You say no

[51:45] earthquake happened and it after it is

[51:47] going on at a distance some hundreds of

[51:50] miles away. No. So impact is deeper or

[51:54] smil milder but same impact goes

[51:57] everywhere. So this is the idea that it

[52:01] can be mother can be experienced in our

[52:04] life not only

[52:07] taking first intellectually to

[52:09] understand that there is one and

[52:11] absolute one but this manifold has come

[52:14] out of the divine will we call God's

[52:18] will

[52:20] God let there be light and there is

[52:24] light no

[52:26] if you feel like

[52:28] They it does not take his him to create

[52:30] inch by inch one thing as we do a

[52:33] carpenters have to create this table or

[52:35] the desk. No, you have to build a b one

[52:39] type of one wood, one piece of wood and

[52:41] then make it smooth and then with a nail

[52:44] and this and that. God didn't create the

[52:47] world like that. It comes out of the

[52:50] wish and instantly entire world comes

[52:52] and as you know our everyday experience

[52:55] where our world experience goes every

[52:57] day sucked into that sleep. No,

[53:01] this whole universe of today which is so

[53:04] serious now just suppose you fall asleep

[53:08] in instantly the whole world goes away

[53:11] sucked into something and then projects

[53:13] in the morning again it didn't come from

[53:15] me it came in you from your heart you my

[53:18] heart me so it is the the projection and

[53:21] evolution involution going on it is

[53:24] God's play is only one reality

[53:26] manifesting and our purpose of life is

[53:28] to see the divine and call it mother, it

[53:32] is very sweet term. Brahman is too dry.

[53:36] But if you say mother, we know motherly

[53:39] love and affection. No. So it suits our

[53:42] heart to see the mother everywhere. And

[53:44] is a purest relationship between the

[53:47] whole world. Purest relationship is

[53:49] mother and the child. And so child means

[53:52] baby. Baby and mother. Universal. Look

[53:55] at the birds. You look at the animals.

[53:57] Look at the human it is irrespective of

[54:00] anywhere it's baby and mother

[54:02] relationship the purest relationship

[54:04] love unconditional love and feeling

[54:07] without mother we cannot survive so to

[54:09] go back to that consciousness of purity

[54:12] we can worship mother because this month

[54:16] last month was da mother da's puja

[54:20] here we'll have in Hollywood mother

[54:22] kali's puja on the night of 8th 8th of

[54:25] this month November It starts at 10:00

[54:30] and goes up to 2:00 or 3:00. Uh that is

[54:33] the night puja. Kalimund is here also

[54:36] they do the puja. So that is the that is

[54:39] the worship of the mother not in the

[54:41] image yes that we do but to take it in

[54:45] our life to see the puja every day

[54:48] everywhere. Thank you all.

[54:52] Om shanty shanty shanty

[54:58] harrishna.

[55:06] Thank you all.

In this lecture, Swami Sarvadevananda attributes the line to the Devi Upanishad, where the Goddess as divine Mother declares her own nature. It points to a reality that never changes, Brahman, while also appearing as the changing world. The line holds both truths together rather than choosing one.
It is an image for how the unchanging reality can be misread as something it is not. A coiled rope in the dark looks like a snake, and fear and reaction are real, but a light reveals it was only a rope. In the swami's account, maya works like this misinterpretation, operating through sensory experience.
In this talk, the swami describes the three gunas as lenses through which the universe is seen. Sattva is transparent and gives a clearer view of reality, rajas tints everything red, and tamas is deep darkness that hides what lies behind. He says their combinations produce the whole manifest universe.
The swami says the non-dual tradition calls it maya, but worshippers of the Mother call it mahamaya, the great Mother. He describes it as a power inside Brahman that swells into motion like an ocean, turning potential into the manifest cosmos. So maya is presented as the creative power of the real, not a separate false reality.
Brahman is the transcendental, unmanifest reality, and Shakti is the power through which it manifests. The swami compares this to a musician whose talent is not visible until it is expressed in song, and says the two are not separate things. Shiva and Shakti imagery in Hinduism, he says, represents this relationship.
The lecture, titled 'I am the Born, I am the Unborn,' was given by Swami Sarvadevananda on November 1, 2026, at the Ramakrishna Monastery in Trabuco Canyon, California, and is posted on the monastery's YouTube channel. The monastery's website, ramakrishnamonastery.org, lists future talks and activities. The Vedanta Society of Southern California's Trabuco Canyon page is at vedanta.org.
