A First Look at a Yoga Couple's Teaching Introduction

Dennis Lang
Dennis Lang

4 Min. Lesezeit

A three-minute video posted in December 2017 is a modest thing to build a feature around. It has no interview, no studio footage that we can describe, and no transcript for us to quote. What it has is a title, a short description, and a clear purpose: to introduce two people who teach yoga, and to say that they are open to hearing from viewers. That is a worthwhile subject in its own right, because a first look at a teacher is where most students decide whether to keep looking.

What is this introduction actually saying?

The video's own description is brief. In the channel's words, "This video is about us, its an introduction to us, our yoga and teachings. Thank you for your interest and fee free to contact us." That is the entire public framing we have. It tells us the video is self-introduction rather than instruction, that the teaching is what is being introduced, and that the makers want a direct line to people who watch.

The channel, yogawithdennisandkathy.com, is named for the two teachers, and the video is credited to Dennis Lang. The running time is 3 minutes and 22 seconds. At the point this was indexed, it had 615 views. We are not going to guess at what is said in those 202 seconds, what style of yoga is taught, where, or under which training. Anything beyond the description above would be invention, and a feature that invents its subject is worse than no feature at all.

Why does a short intro video matter to a student?

Teachers who introduce themselves on camera are doing something specific. They are answering, before anyone asks, the questions a prospective student carries into a first class: Who are you? What do you teach? Why should I trust this? A good introduction answers at least the first two, and the best ones leave the third to be settled in person.

The fact that this video frames itself around "us, our yoga and teachings" is a reasonable place to start. It puts the teaching ahead of the production. A three-minute piece cannot carry a full philosophy, and it does not need to. Its job is to make a first contact feel human and to open a channel for a real conversation.

How should you read a first look at any yoga teacher?

Because this video gives so little detail, it is useful as a template for what to ask before committing to a teacher, whoever they are:

  • Training and lineage. Ask where the teacher learned, who trained them, and how long they have taught. An introduction should point you toward answers, even if it does not give them all.
  • What the teaching is for. Whether the goal is strength, flexibility, breath, meditation, or something else, a clear statement of purpose is more useful than a list of styles.
  • Whether they invite contact. The description here ends with an open invitation. A teacher who is reachable and willing to answer questions is giving you information in itself.
  • Whether the words match a class. A three-minute video is a sample. Attend a session, or a trial class, before deciding.

None of these checks requires knowing anything about the people in this video. They are the same questions a student should ask of any teacher, and an introduction that makes them easy to ask is doing its job.

What this video can and can't tell you

It can tell you that two people chose to introduce themselves publicly in 2017, that they connect their identity to their yoga and teaching, and that they want to hear from people who are interested. It cannot tell you how well they teach, what their training is, or whether their approach suits you. Those answers come from direct experience, from asking questions, and from practice.

That limit is the honest shape of this piece. It is short because the material is short. Pretending otherwise would waste the time of anyone who read this far.

Where to go from here

If the video prompts your interest, the most useful next step is the one the description itself suggests: contact the teachers directly, and ask them the questions above. Watch the video in full, note what it says about their teaching, and write down what it leaves out. Then take what you learn into a class, a conversation, or a trial session. A first look is a beginning, and the teacher's own answers are what should decide the rest.

Ask where they trained, who taught them, and how long they have been teaching, then check whether their answers are specific. A teacher's introduction should point you toward these answers, even if it doesn't give every detail. Observing a class or trial session will tell you more than any single video.
A useful introduction makes clear who the teacher is, what the teaching is for, and how to get in touch. The 2017 introduction from Dennis Lang frames itself as an introduction to 'us, our yoga and teachings' and invites viewers to make contact. Its short length means it works best as a starting point rather than a full account.
Usually not on its own. A short video can show you a teacher's tone and how they present themselves, but it cannot show how they teach in person. Pair the video with a direct conversation or a trial class before committing.
Ask about training and lineage, the purpose of their teaching, how they adapt sessions for beginners or people with injuries, and whether they offer a trial class. Pay attention to whether they answer clearly and welcome questions. Responsiveness is a meaningful signal.
Introduction videos let teachers reach people who cannot attend in person and answer basic questions before a first contact. They also let a prospective student hear a teacher's voice and see their presentation. This 2017 video, for example, asks viewers to reach out directly.
The channel is yogawithdennisandkathy.com, and the video description invites viewers to contact the teachers directly. The public description does not give more detail about training or style, so direct contact is the most reliable way to learn more.
