Yin Yoga Stillness Through the Leaf and the Wind Story

A yin yoga session that threads a short parable through its long, quiet holds, a Sanskrit wind chant, and a closing gong bath: that is the shape of this 64-minute video from the teaching couple behind yogawithdennisandkathy.com. Kathy leads the practice from a seat on the mat, reading a story called "The Leaf and the Wind" between cues. Dennis sits off to the side with a Native American flute and acoustic guitars, playing melodic, unhurried figures that rise and fall with the narrative. The result is less a class than a slowly unfolding piece of music in which the body is the instrument being tuned.

What does a yin practice look like when a story is part of the score?

Open with the sound. Before any shape is named, Kathy welcomes viewers and frames the session as a story about belief in the wind, with a mantra to follow. Dennis's flute enters first, "a very melodic soft gentle invocation to the practice," as he describes it early on, and the guitars keep going underneath for the full hour. Nothing in the music is meant to push. It is there to hold the room the way a good accompanist holds a singer.

Then the instructions begin, and they are specific. Kathy asks students to "wiggle around a bit on your sit bones" and then "drop into the breath," and she names the intention plainly: "detach yourself from anything else that's going on your day right now." She also explains the rhythm of the session. Each shape is held for five minutes, with a timer she watches so students don't have to, and a cue at the halfway point and again with thirty seconds left.

The first shape is a seated twist. Left leg extended, right foot crossed over it, the left elbow reaching around the outside of the right knee, gaze turned to the side rather than over the shoulder. Kathy offers a choice in the same breath: stay where you are, or swing the foot around for a deeper variant. Both options are presented as equally legitimate. That two-track language recurs throughout the video, and it is one of the most useful things a yin teacher can model.

Why does the leaf story sit inside the holds?

The story is the spine of the practice, and its timing is deliberate. Kathy begins reading while students are settled in the first twist. The leaf is "a new leaf at the top of a very old tree," and it "adored all the elements the wind the Sun and the rain," but it was "in love with the wind," because the breeze gave it motion and let it see the world from every side. The tale is simple, almost a children's tale, and that is the point. Its images of stretching, rocking, dancing and whispering give the mind something to follow so the body can stop reaching for an exit.

The story also grows darker in a way that matters for a practice about transition. Partway through the twists, the old wind speaks, and the leaf is reminded that "soon enough you will be withered in brown," its dust "blown away by the same breeze that stirs at heart today." Kathy's delivery stays calm. She does not dramatize the warning. The message lands because the body is quiet while it arrives.

"Enjoy your youth and beauty while you can for soon enough you will be withered in brown." (the wind's words, as Kathy reads them in the video)

Later the story turns toward gentleness. The leaf, close to the end of its season, is lifted and spun "higher and higher," and the wind carries its dust onward with "a drop of hope and a touch of love." The description of the video frames the whole practice as a story "about life, transitions and everlasting life." That phrase is easy to skim past in a product blurb, but the arc of the tale makes it concrete: the leaf does not survive as a leaf, and the video does not pretend otherwise.

How do the holds teach you to stay still?

Kathy makes a point that is easy to miss in yin classes: the transitions matter. Between shapes, students lie on their backs in what she calls the transition shape, and she says directly that "the transition shapes are just as important as the end shapes," asking students to remain still in them too. A lot of people rush this part, reaching for the next pose. Kathy asks them to stay, to take "three more breaths right here," and to let the energy move.

The video also gives a clear way to think about effort in a long hold. In the second half, Kathy tells students that the amount of energy "just enough energy to hold the shape no more no less." That idea, that a hold should not be gripped or forced, is the core of yin, and she returns to it in cue after cue: check the right shoulder and relax it down, let the left hand go, check for clenching anywhere in the body.

Edges are handled with the same care. Kathy asks students to move into "that first edge," the first place of sensation, and to stop there rather than pushing through. She is equally direct about pain. If there is "sharp shooting pain," she says, come out of the shape and honor the body. In a practice built on long holds, that permission is not a footnote. It is the method.

The variations keep the holds personal. In a shape she calls fire log, or square, one shin is stacked over the other with the knee resting on the opposite ankle. Her alternative, shoelace, stacks the knees directly. Students choose, then move "any amount," which she describes as "just a couple inches" or deeper, depending on the hip. Props appear as needed: a block under the forehead, a bolster to support the neck. The practice is not a test of how far a body can go. It is a set of instructions for how to listen.

What is the Vayu chant, and why is it sung in this practice?

The mantra is the video's second anchor. The description calls it "a healing mantra of the winds, the Vayus," and invites viewers to chant along. Kathy introduces it while students are lying down, explaining that the chant pairs a Sanskrit word for wind with the word "namaha." Her gloss is that namaha "means it's not about me or it's not me." In her telling, the chant asks the wind for guidance and for intelligence, and the humility of "not me" sits well beside the leaf's own surrender to the breeze.

Kathy's instruction on chanting is worth noting for anyone who has felt self-conscious with mantra. "It doesn't matter what you sound like," she says, "if you're a singer if you're in key or hit the notes or pronounce the words right." She asks only that students do their best. This is a practical stance. A chant in yoga is meant to do something to the breath and the nervous system, not to be performed. The Dennis-and-Kathy approach makes that feel possible in a living room.

What does the closing gong bath add?

The session ends with the savasana Kathy had promised in her opening, a gong bath that builds to what she called "a crescendo if you will of the gongs." Dennis's guitars and flute give way to the wash of the gong, and students are invited to rest in whatever they have been carrying through the story. The video is a single arc: a quiet start, the leaf's journey, a chant that asks for guidance, and a sound bath that lets the body settle without a next instruction.

Where to go from here

If you want to try the structure yourself, start small. Choose a short story or a poem you love, read it slowly during two or three seated holds, and keep each hold to a length you can honor. Use the Kathy approach: offer yourself two options for every shape, one gentle and one deeper, and check for clenching. Treat the transitions as part of the practice rather than the space between practices. And if you want to chant, remember what she said about being in key: the point is the breath, not the pitch.

The Leaf and the Wind is a small story, and this video uses it the way good liturgy uses a parable, as a place for attention to rest. Watch the full practice on the channel, or simply let the wind in the story do its work the next time you sit still for five minutes.

[0:04] nameste everyone and thank you for

[0:07] joining us for an any other practice my

[0:10] name is Cathy and this is my awesome

[0:12] husband of 35 years Dennis and along

[0:15] with this practice we're going to be

[0:16] sharing a story about belief in the wind

[0:19] and to support the story we'll be doing

[0:22] a little chanting with a mantra which

[0:24] I'll tell you about later yeah so we are

[0:27] really psyched to be here today and

[0:28] really appreciate you joining us and

[0:30] what I've also brought along with us are

[0:33] several instruments I've have a Native

[0:36] American flute for a very melodic soft

[0:40] gentle invocation to the practice

[0:42] leading into guitars and the guitars are

[0:45] going to be melodic throughout the whole

[0:47] practice in a meditative way but in a

[0:50] supportive way of the story that Cathy

[0:52] will share but also melodically for the

[0:55] chant that we'll all do together by the

[0:57] way then we'll all weed into a crescendo

[1:00] if you will of the dongs or a Donna

[1:03] bathroom asana so we're excited to be

[1:06] here today so let's get started find a

[1:10] comfortable seated position whatever

[1:11] that might look like for you wiggle

[1:15] around a bit on your sit bones and then

[1:19] close your eyes and drop into the breath

[1:25] [Music]

[1:31] [Music]

[1:36] detach yourself from anything else

[1:40] that's going on your day right now

[1:43] [Music]

[1:45] attached or anything that's going on in

[1:48] your life right now

[1:49] just be present during the practice

[1:52] [Music]

[2:01] if you knew two in your back it's a

[2:04] style of practice that is very inward

[2:08] about being still

[2:11] [Music]

[2:22] we'll be holding each shape for five

[2:24] minutes but don't worry

[2:27] got a little timer here I'll be watching

[2:30] the clock and letting you know when

[2:32] we're halfway through each shape and

[2:34] then we've got 30 seconds left to go

[2:37] [Music]

[2:49] if at any time during the practice you

[2:53] encounter sharp shooting pain definitely

[2:57] come out of the shape honor yourself on

[3:00] your body

[3:02] [Music]

[3:13] opening let's move into our first shape

[3:17] so send your left leg straight out in

[3:20] front of you your right knee stays bent

[3:23] you're going to cross that right foot

[3:26] over the left side of that left leg so

[3:30] we're going to do a seated twist here

[3:31] you can stay right here this is a great

[3:33] place to be or if you'd like we could

[3:35] take that left foot and swing it around

[3:38] so the right knee is pointing up the

[3:41] right foot is firing on the floor your

[3:43] right hand goes behind you it's a little

[3:47] kickstand and then just let your left

[3:49] elbow reach around that right knee your

[3:53] gaze should be towards the side so not

[3:56] over that right shoulder but just

[3:59] turning towards the side and close your

[4:02] eyes here sit up nice and tall

[4:05] [Music]

[4:11] check in with that right shoulder and

[4:14] relax it down

[4:16] [Music]

[4:23] he's just enough energy to hold the

[4:27] shape no more no less

[4:35] relax the left hand just let it go

[4:39] [Music]

[4:48] just gentle slow breathing here as we

[4:52] hold the shape for five minutes so the

[5:06] story is about belief in them and leaf

[5:15] looked out across the broad beautiful

[5:17] sky down over the lush spring garden

[5:22] [Music]

[5:23] as it moved leaf saw all the corners of

[5:26] the garden with its flowers bushes trees

[5:31] and animals leaf stretched to catch

[5:36] every sight and sound you see it was a

[5:41] new leaf at the top of a very old tree

[5:45] [Music]

[5:49] leaf adored all the elements the wind

[5:53] the Sun and the rain but it was in love

[5:57] with the wind when gave it the freedom

[6:00] of motion and without the breeze they

[6:04] would never have seen the world below or

[6:07] from side to side when rocked leaf to

[6:12] sleep and shook it awake wind made leaf

[6:16] dance

[6:18] [Music]

[6:32] with the midway point of each shape we

[6:35] have the option to move slightly to make

[6:39] it more comfortable or to deepen the

[6:41] shape or slightly come out of the shape

[6:43] so in your twists now you decide if you

[6:47] want to twist a little more you can move

[6:49] that right hand around a little more to

[6:51] the right twist a little deeper when you

[6:54] might grab that left knee and a little

[6:58] different spot too and crease the twist

[7:01] or you might find that you need to back

[7:03] out either way once you've made any kind

[7:07] of adjustment come back to stillness

[7:10] close your eyes

[7:16] [Music]

[7:31] many days when toad leaf of the places

[7:34] that had been all across the river is in

[7:37] down to the sea have I been whispered

[7:41] the wind on one particular day leaf

[7:45] could even smell the scent of the water

[7:48] in the salty places of which wind spoke

[7:56] [Music]

[8:07] do it grey stay with the shape

[8:15] [Music]

[8:23] [Music]

[8:31] staying right here for 30 seconds

[8:34] [Music]

[9:00] [Music]

[9:02] carefully unwinding and straighten your

[9:07] legs out lie flat on our back here so

[9:11] slow the roll down

[9:15] stay here on your back

[9:21] it's called the transition shade so

[9:24] we'll be coming back to the shade after

[9:27] every handshape just resting here

[9:33] allowing the energy to move around

[9:38] [Music]

[9:46] [Music]

[9:49] the transition shapes are just as

[9:51] important as the end shoes just as

[9:58] important to remain still in these

[10:00] shapes as well

[10:12] [Music]

[10:14] say three more breaths right here lying

[10:16] on your back

[10:19] [Music]

[10:31] slowly bring yourself up to a seated

[10:33] position once again so it's gonna be

[10:37] Yogi's choice in this shape the first

[10:39] option is called fire log or square hose

[10:43] and then the right knee is resting on

[10:47] top of the left ankle and the right

[10:49] ankle that's resting on top of the left

[10:52] knee and you're making a little stack of

[10:54] your shins of fire logs right here

[10:56] now you may choose to put some kind of

[10:58] drop a block bolster or like it under

[11:02] that right knee if you need to so this

[11:04] is option one option two is shoelace

[11:07] where you're stacking the right knee

[11:09] directly on top of the left knee so you

[11:12] decide which one you want square or

[11:16] shoelace and once you've found that

[11:19] shape move forward any amount it might

[11:22] be just a couple inches or you might

[11:25] choose to go a little deeper in the

[11:27] shape I'm just moving into the shape to

[11:31] that first edge at first place

[11:34] sensation that you encounter which could

[11:36] be in your right hip

[11:38] [Music]

[11:49] once you get there relax into it

[11:56] [Music]

[12:05] [Music]

[12:07] you do have a block handy you could

[12:09] place it right underneath your forehead

[12:11] if you're low enough to do so

[12:13] or if you have a bolster you could also

[12:15] place that under your forehead just just

[12:19] support the neck a little bit

[12:24] [Music]

[12:39] whenever when blue past being a breeze

[12:43] or a Dale little grain they waved a

[12:47] joyful greeting to wind like the hand of

[12:51] a happy child to a loved one I will love

[12:56] you for all time leaf whispered to the

[12:59] moving air around it it could not be

[13:02] happier

[13:07] [Music]

[13:19] [Music]

[13:25] relax a little more on the shape check

[13:30] in make sure you're not holding in any

[13:33] places in your body not clenching

[13:36] anywhere check in with that job wiggle

[13:39] it around a bit

[13:44] [Music]

[14:00] so right the midway point see what you

[14:05] need in your body do you need any kind

[14:07] of little Wiggly

[14:10] and kind of adjusting to make it

[14:11] slightly more comfortable once you've

[14:15] done that come back to stillness

[14:19] committing to the stillness

[14:22] [Music]

[14:34] tre was listening to the conversation

[14:37] between the leaf and wind and he emitted

[14:40] a deep chuckle I am glad you are happy

[14:44] now

[14:45] she said enjoy your youth and beauty

[14:48] while you can for soon enough you will

[14:52] be withered in brown drives dust blown

[14:56] away by the same breeze that stirs at

[15:00] heart today your time will come to curse

[15:05] the wind in the way of things

[15:08] wend is old and you are young we should

[15:12] ask when about this sometime

[15:28] [Music]

[15:38] [Music]

[15:39] so the chant that goes along with this

[15:42] story is a simple one by a vague namaha

[15:51] and namaha by it was in the Sanskrit

[15:56] word for wind namaha means it's not

[16:01] about me or it's not me so this chant

[16:07] was asking the wind for guidance and

[16:10] intelligence 30 seconds more error

[16:19] [Music]

[16:23] that's even more

[16:30] [Music]

[16:37] [Music]

[16:46] now inhaling push your torso up unwind

[16:53] those legs come to lay on your back once

[16:56] again straighten out the legs lay all

[17:00] the way down settle in here

[17:06] [Music]

[17:12] now let's chant this chant together on

[17:15] by your bed

[17:20] [Music]

[17:45] [Music]

[18:00] so chanting is very integral to yoga

[18:06] doesn't matter what you sound like if

[18:09] you're a singer if you're in key or hit

[18:12] the notes or pronounce the words right

[18:16] just do your best you can do is

[18:22] violently are we going to say the words

[18:24] to yourself

[18:31] so a couple more breaths here

[18:36] [Music]

[18:46] now come up to a shape called dear so in

[18:51] this shape the right shin is parallel to

[18:56] the front of your mat the left foot is

[18:59] behind you and don't worry about which

[19:02] way this left the turns if it points

[19:05] straight back or to the left or

[19:07] internally whichever is most comfortable

[19:09] for you the inside of the right foot is

[19:14] distressing outside inside the left leg

[19:17] and you're going to walk yourself over

[19:19] your right knee over your right knee

[19:21] down down and down and maybe jumping

[19:25] your head to the floor now if you'd

[19:27] liked a little more you could walk

[19:29] yourself a little more to the right and

[19:31] down so just find the position that

[19:36] works for you and that left hip is

[19:38] definitely going to come off the mat so

[19:40] don't worry about that walk yourself

[19:42] down find a comfortable spot

[19:49] [Music]

[20:04] this is a great shape for surrender just

[20:13] let everything go

[20:14] [Music]

[20:24] [Music]

[20:30] trees said no more leaf tried not to

[20:34] think about what tree had said of course

[20:39] leaf had heard the stories of how leaves

[20:42] grow old and die but still they would

[20:46] never be hateful

[20:51] that everyday leaf made a decision it

[20:55] shouted to the world I will never hate

[20:59] wind I will not give in to fear sorrow

[21:03] or unhappiness

[21:05] [Music]

[21:17] [Music]

[21:25] still the next time when came to call

[21:29] Leif could not help but ask when I

[21:34] become old dry and brittle will you

[21:38] destroy me history says when was silent

[21:44] for a long time and then find the answer

[21:50] I will not destroy you my dear one

[21:54] all earthquake things were old and dry

[21:58] that is not my doing

[22:01] [Music]

[22:10] so we're the midway point here at the

[22:13] shape so if you're looking for a little

[22:16] more sensation you can move a little

[22:18] more to the right and towards the back

[22:20] of your mat and then drop down there

[22:26] or you might choose to stay exactly

[22:28] where you are it's perfectly fine

[22:35] we should never move deeper into a shape

[22:38] than our body wants us to

[22:42] there's a three-letter word for that

[22:44] when we move too deep before our body is

[22:47] ready that's called ego so if you find

[22:52] yourself sore after a you know to

[22:56] practice you might have gone too deep

[22:58] you might have let that knee go slip in

[23:04] the whole point again is to relax the

[23:07] muscles so we get into the connective

[23:09] tissue and stretch those make them

[23:12] juicier especially as we age

[23:23] [Music]

[23:40] [Music]

[23:53] can you let go a little more here be

[24:00] like a sloth in the shape

[24:13] [Music]

[24:15] thirty seconds more here

[24:17] [Music]

[24:45] let your inhale bring you up and out of

[24:48] the shape once again you're going to

[24:50] come to lie on your back so there we go

[24:54] legs out in front of you lie down

[24:58] [Music]

[25:01] resting here in the shape this

[25:06] transition pose just notice you feel any

[25:12] tingling sensations or energy moving

[25:16] through your body stay right here on

[25:23] your back

[25:31] [Music]

[25:40] leaf was shaking and wind could hear

[25:44] fear beginning to overtake wind wind

[25:48] Adam keep your promise not to give in to

[25:52] hate and sorrow when the time comes for

[25:56] you to fall I will be there to catch you

[26:00] it will be a beginning and not an end

[26:03] for you stand on your back for this next

[26:13] shape bring the soles of your feet

[26:15] together and let the knees fall open

[26:18] wide so your feet can be really close to

[26:22] your body which makes it more

[26:24] challenging or they might be a little

[26:25] further away you choose and then your

[26:29] hands can be anywhere on your belly on

[26:32] your legs overhead cactus on arms you

[26:37] choose what feels right for your body

[26:41] just let gravity have you here relaxing

[26:46] into the shape of any tension on the

[26:51] inner thighs

[26:54] [Music]

[27:25] time passed and leaf grew and changed at

[27:31] first it became very big and strong then

[27:37] as the air grew chili leaves began to

[27:42] take on their most magnificent colors

[27:45] first a yellow cast and then little

[27:48] patches of red and gold began to creep

[27:51] across it

[28:02] trees said to leave it is the beginning

[28:06] of the end for you and all of your kind

[28:10] soon it will be nothing but a speck and

[28:14] the dirt

[28:18] all the other leaves on the tree began

[28:20] to droop and some even tumbled from

[28:23] their homes early as the wave event and

[28:26] happy thoughts dragged them down to the

[28:29] earth

[28:33] [Music]

[28:48] [Music]

[29:06] staying in this shape is lying butterfly

[29:09] shape

[29:17] and the midway point here you may choose

[29:20] to adjust where your feet are you can

[29:23] move them a little closer in or maybe

[29:25] you slide them a little further away

[29:27] from you and just notice the difference

[29:31] and how that feels on your inner thighs

[29:33] or on your back and commit to the

[29:38] stillness again the remaining time in

[29:41] the shape

[29:44] [Music]

[29:56] [Music]

[30:03] [Music]

[30:05] the days passed which began to feel thin

[30:10] and tired the bright colors that covered

[30:16] Lee starting to brown in the little leaf

[30:22] knew it's time is growing short still it

[30:29] would not be sad because every day now

[30:33] when told leaf the wonderful adventures

[30:37] that were to come

[30:38] [Music]

[30:47] [Music]

[31:05] [Music]

[31:10] so are you staying in the present moment

[31:13] where's your mind wandered off somewhere

[31:18] bring it back to this moment this shape

[31:21] this breath staying present here for

[31:28] just 30 seconds more

[31:31] [Music]

[31:56] and now two straight those legs out

[32:00] slime flat on your back then we'll do

[32:08] this chance again

[32:09] let's sing it three times by you

[32:15] [Music]

[32:37] [Music]

[32:56] so chanting you know yoga practice

[33:00] brings this extra special quality to it

[33:06] this extra element makes it even more

[33:12] sacred

[33:19] [Music]

[33:29] so take one more breath and then come up

[33:35] to a seated position as we move through

[33:37] those same shapes on the other side so

[33:40] the first one will be the seated twist

[33:43] leave the right leg straight left knee

[33:46] bends up cross the left foot on the

[33:49] other side of the right leg opting to

[33:52] stay right here or sliding that right

[33:55] look around sitting up nice and tall

[33:58] rock turn right elbow around that left

[34:02] knee and then left hand it was behind

[34:05] you and again take the gaze

[34:08] put it straight in front of you but not

[34:10] looking over that left shoulder might be

[34:13] a little much for your neck sitting up

[34:16] tall relaxing the shoulders relaxing

[34:21] that right hand closing your eyes

[34:35] [Music]

[34:38] giving it to the twist here just seeing

[35:03] leaf cling to happiness while all those

[35:07] around it major he really angry one day

[35:14] it could stand it no longer so when when

[35:18] came to call tree shook for all it was

[35:22] worth and lead the snapped away from us

[35:25] branch and began to fall he watched and

[35:32] waited for leaf to scream and cry to

[35:36] realize what horror had just befallen it

[35:41] instead jury heard the sound of laughter

[35:45] [Music]

[35:47] you see one moment leaf was held fast to

[35:50] tree and the next it was falling

[35:53] flipping end-over-end

[35:59] laughter pure joy and said I am flying I

[36:03] am soaring like a little bird

[36:06] [Music]

[36:26] [Music]

[36:30] now from your twisted position at this

[36:34] midway point if you'd like to go a

[36:36] little deeper you could walk those

[36:38] fingers behind you those left fingers

[36:41] around a little more

[36:43] sit up tall straight rip that knee a

[36:49] little differently come back to

[36:54] stillness

[36:58] is relaxed as possible in this shape

[37:03] but still maintaining the pose

[37:09] [Music]

[37:18] [Music]

[37:24] [Music]

[37:27] at that moment when a leaf was falling

[37:31] and felt something lifted up it was when

[37:36] come to keep his promise when said to

[37:42] leaf I cannot take you far right now

[37:46] just to rest on the ground

[37:49] but no matter what happens do not be

[37:52] afraid I will return for you

[37:58] [Music]

[38:09] [Music]

[38:14] [Music]

[38:17] staying in your twist finding that

[38:22] stillness resisting any temptation or

[38:25] urged to come out of it stay right where

[38:28] you are in that twist

[38:33] [Music]

[38:46] thirty Seconds my hair

[38:53] [Music]

[39:01] [Music]

[39:17] gently unwinding now straightening up

[39:21] those legs on your mat coming down once

[39:26] again

[39:28] flying flat on your back resting here

[39:37] [Music]

[39:41] take a little inventory how you feel

[39:48] you feel more at peace than when you

[39:50] started the practice feel a little

[39:55] calmer

[39:56] [Music]

[40:08] embrace that peacefulness embrace that

[40:12] calmness that you've created for

[40:13] yourself

[40:14] [Music]

[40:25] - RS right here

[40:29] [Music]

[40:39] bring yourself up to a seated position

[40:42] as we move into either shoelace or fire

[40:49] log square so left knee is going to be

[40:53] on top this time left knee on top of

[40:55] right ankle if you're choosing this

[40:58] shape or you're choosing shoelace its

[41:02] left knee on top and right knee do you

[41:04] decide which poses best for you I

[41:07] suggest you do the one you did on the

[41:09] other side come into the shape and then

[41:13] lean forward maybe just a little bit or

[41:16] maybe quite a bit then if you have a

[41:19] prop again you could stick it under your

[41:21] forehead just to give your neck a little

[41:25] rest

[41:35] [Music]

[41:45] so check in with that left hip

[41:48] [Music]

[41:50] you can't release it a little more

[41:56] [Music]

[41:57] these openers can be challenging for

[42:00] sure just do your best and do it for

[42:04] yourself

[42:12] [Music]

[42:25] when carried leaf ever so gently to the

[42:28] ground and allowed it to rest their leaf

[42:35] could feed on the rumble of the roots

[42:37] from tree as it laughed and said you see

[42:42] now you are ready to become like all the

[42:45] others it's just as I said you should

[42:50] give up now but lead was not affected by

[42:57] trees words it did not answer but it

[43:04] laid quietly looking up at the world

[43:11] you know I look so different now after a

[43:19] while leave nodded off to sleep and a

[43:24] long time passed before it will go

[43:27] [Music]

[43:59] so now we have an opportunity at the

[44:02] midway point to the shade wiggle adjust

[44:05] do what you need to do to make it a

[44:08] little more comfortable maybe go a

[44:10] little deeper into the shade

[44:13] [Music]

[44:15] and if you've made any movement come

[44:18] back to stillness the stillness is one

[44:23] of the most important things again

[44:25] you're there sometimes it's really

[44:34] challenging for us to be still though

[44:37] bodies like to move

[44:39] [Music]

[44:43] yeah

[44:45] to the stars over and over and over

[44:48] again during this practice

[44:52] [Music]

[45:00] instead of feeling old stiff and papery

[45:04] leave felt suddenly free to move about

[45:08] we could hear when singing softly

[45:11] through the trees and felt it's up being

[45:14] lifted and spun higher and higher

[45:19] when said to leaf did I not promise all

[45:24] would be well you have become the dust

[45:28] of the earth so light and so fine that I

[45:32] can carry you with me anywhere

[45:35] [Music]

[46:04] thirty seconds more hair too soon

[46:07] marinade in this place in this shape

[46:13] [Music]

[46:20] [Music]

[46:29] [Music]

[46:37] you're way out of the shape and

[46:41] straighten those legs moving as slow as

[46:44] you need to sometimes coming out of the

[46:46] shapes can be challenging and come to

[46:50] lie flat on your back like we've been

[46:52] doing between all the shapes just lie

[46:54] flat on your back we do this chant one

[47:02] last time bye you may now sing along

[47:09] with us

[47:11] [Music]

[47:16] [Music]

[47:46] [Music]

[47:48] chanting to the wind to bring us wisdom

[47:56] [Music]

[48:03] take two more breaths here lying on your

[48:06] back and then come up before deer goes

[48:18] once again this time the right foot is

[48:21] to the side and the left shin is

[48:24] parallel to the front of your mat and

[48:28] you choose to go over that left knee

[48:30] lock it down lock it down

[48:33] or you might choose to move a little to

[48:36] the left to the back of your mat and

[48:39] down just moving over that left leg some

[48:46] fashion and supporting the head if you

[48:50] can't either on the matter with your

[48:53] hands or maybe with a block or a bolster

[48:55] and the right hips gonna come off the

[48:58] mat a little bit that's all

[48:59] [Music]

[49:06] sink into this pose deeply

[49:12] [Music]

[49:18] we kind of limp if you will and so the

[49:39] wind carried the dust of leaf and

[49:43] scattered it over fields on to the backs

[49:47] of birds that flew to the mountains and

[49:51] into the streams that led to the oceans

[49:57] finally when seeded the clouds with the

[50:01] last few tiny greens that were once leaf

[50:05] food and leave came back to earth with

[50:09] rains and snows

[50:13] [Music]

[50:16] everywhere I found the remains that leaf

[50:20] brought a grain of pure joy

[50:22] a drop of hope in a touch of love for

[50:26] wind and for life so if you ever wonder

[50:32] which leaves listen to wind or which

[50:36] leaves listen to tree look up on a

[50:39] stormy day and see which one's wave a

[50:42] joyous greeting and which one's fall

[50:45] down and sorrow

[50:51] [Music]

[51:05] [Music]

[51:18] so the midway point once again you have

[51:21] a choice you could stay right where you

[51:24] are or you could move a little bit more

[51:27] to the back of your mouth

[51:29] [Music]

[51:36] staying right there doing even more limp

[51:43] if you can in the shape

[51:49] [Music]

[51:53] so I love this little story about the

[51:55] leaf in the wind it's a reminder that we

[52:04] need more people in our life more

[52:06] friends family in our life that are like

[52:09] the wind that lift us up they give us

[52:12] hope

[52:13] and less people like tree

[52:17] we're always negative bringing this down

[52:25] maybe the next time you have a windy day

[52:29] remember the story about the leaf in the

[52:32] wind remember the message to never give

[52:38] up hope

[52:43] [Music]

[52:48] [Music]

[52:55] thirty seconds left here you take the

[53:05] breath a little deeper here

[53:21] [Music]

[53:27] you're way up and out of the shape move

[53:30] into shavasana so extending the legs out

[53:35] in front of you

[53:39] I'm on your back maybe separating the

[53:44] feet and arms away from your body dennis

[53:55] is going to give us a beautiful gone

[53:57] back shavasana just take this time for

[54:04] yourself to fall into deep meditative

[54:09] state of relaxation

[54:59] [Music]

[55:36] [Music]

[56:25] [Music]

[56:46] [Music]

[57:01] [Music]

[57:29] [Laughter]

[58:00] [Music]

[58:04] [Laughter]

[58:06] [Music]

[58:09] [Laughter]

[59:06] [Music]

[59:06] [Laughter]

[59:13] [Music]

[59:29] [Music]

[59:44] [Laughter]

[1:00:22] [Music]

[1:00:23] [Laughter]

[1:00:42] [Laughter]

[1:01:31] so given your breath

[1:01:40] a lot of hours to return from shavasana

[1:01:51] if she brings into motion of fingers the

[1:01:54] toes and they rule the head side aside

[1:02:10] then very slowly rolled to the right

[1:02:12] side pause

[1:02:21] just take a moment here to reflect upon

[1:02:23] the practice like a story reflect upon

[1:02:33] the mantra

[1:02:47] very gently make your way into a

[1:02:50] comfortable seated position as you

[1:02:56] arrive there close your eyes a lot of

[1:03:05] pent-up Tom's to meet at the heart

[1:03:08] center and Anjali mudra as you breathe

[1:03:16] here feel your pulse

[1:03:18] feel the wind within you feel breath we

[1:03:29] ask through this mantra that that we're

[1:03:31] going to be clean and cleared healing

[1:03:37] through this mantra we asked that the

[1:03:39] Earth's air be clean and clear owned by

[1:03:47] the namaha namaha thank you for joining

[1:03:56] us for this practice namaste

In this video, Kathy reads 'The Leaf and the Wind' during the holds, a simple tale about a new leaf at the top of an old tree that falls in love with the wind. The story's images of motion, aging and dust give the mind something to follow while the body stays still. The video's description frames it as a story about life, transitions and everlasting life.
Kathy says each shape is held for five minutes, with a cue at the halfway point and another when 30 seconds remain. The timer is handled by the teacher, so students can stay with the shape instead of watching the clock.
The chant pairs a Sanskrit word for wind with 'namaha,' which Kathy glosses as meaning 'it's not about me or it's not me.' The chant is used to ask the wind for guidance and intelligence, according to Kathy in the video.
No, according to Kathy. She says it does not matter what you sound like, whether you are a singer, in key, or pronounce the words right. She asks students to simply do their best.
Kathy is explicit: if you encounter sharp shooting pain, come out of the shape and honor your body. Yin practice asks you to stop at the first edge of sensation rather than pushing through.
Dennis plays a Native American flute for the opening invocation and acoustic guitars that run through the whole practice, then a gong bath during the final savasana. The music is meant to support the story and the chant without pushing the body.
