Miles Clark is the creator of Noise Foundation, a project making textured noise and ambient soundscapes for restless minds. It began as a personal search for sounds to quiet his own head. He describes lying awake around 3am in 2018, finding that the ambient music everyone recommended was too musical and too distracting. So he made something different: pink, brown and white noise processed through vintage gear and layered with subtle textures, hypnotic enough to occupy a busy mind without getting in the way of sleep or focus.
He says he has been chasing the right sound to switch off his brain since childhood, when he fell asleep with a Fisher Price radio under his pillow, half-listening to Radio Luxembourg through the static. His process, as he describes it, is play rather than formula. He builds tracks by hand with a Juno 6, granular synthesis, guitar pedals, found sounds and tape machines, and says he uses no AI generation and no stock loops. What he chases is texture: warmth, grit, crackle and drift, sounds that feel lived-in rather than clinical.
His path to this work was not a straight one. Miles studied forensic science at university, then took a PGCE in music. He co-founded I'm Not From London, a record label and music publisher in Nottingham, and ran it for six years. After leaving the label he became a stay-at-home dad, and the family later chose to home educate. The ambient soundscapes became his creative outlet, which he describes as function rather than art. Noise Foundation is now one half of Cassette Creations, a small family company he shares with his wife, Louise.
Since 2018 the catalogue has grown to more than twenty albums and over a thousand tracks. He also writes notes from the studio about how people actually listen to different noise colours.
Worth Knowing
Miles Clark is the creator of Noise Foundation, a project making hand-built pink, brown and white noise and ambient soundscapes for sleep, focus and restless minds. The project began in 2018, when he was lying awake around 3am and found that the ambient music people recommended was too musical and too distracting. His answer was to process noise through vintage gear and layer subtle textures until the result could hold a busy mind without pulling attention away. Before this work he studied forensic science at university, took a PGCE in music, and co-founded the record label and music publisher I'm Not From London in Nottingham, which he ran for six years. The catalogue now runs to more than twenty albums and over a thousand tracks, and he also writes studio notes on how people actually listen to different noise colours. People tend to care because the work is practical in a way most ambient records are not, and Miles describes it as function rather than art. His profile lists him as a Meditation Teacher, but the documented body of work is sound, so that is where his reputation rests.
