[0:00] In 2023, I just Monday, I just wake
[0:03] [music] up until my husband might find
[0:05] out before. So, 2024,
[0:08] I got a signal by [music] contract for
[0:11] the bank when the egg was supposed. By
[0:14] the way, I only have two.
[0:16] >> [music]
[0:16] >> I'm only one was very perfect one. We
[0:20] don't need pressure for any one because
[0:21] we already [music] had that pressure.
[0:23] It's the same supposed to feel like it's
[0:25] all what I have in my life. They like a
[0:27] games they
[0:29] >> [music]
[0:29] >> won. So, it's a scary. It's awfully
[0:32] scary because sometimes you think that
[0:34] you are just a stubborn on something
[0:36] [music]
[0:37] instead of you being what you already
[0:39] have.
[0:40] >> Welcome back to Dismantling You. Today,
[0:43] I'm really excited to have Mary Man John
[0:45] because her story is one that is very
[0:48] close to my heart. Mary and I worked
[0:50] together during a pandemic with
[0:53] fertility yoga, and she's here to share
[0:55] with us what that journey was like and
[0:58] what she hopes other women can take away
[1:00] from her experience.
[1:02] Mary, you have an extraordinary
[1:05] fertility journey. You became pregnant
[1:08] at 45 using your own eggs. Take us back
[1:11] to the beginning. What was your
[1:13] fertility journey like and when did you
[1:15] first realize it might be a lot harder
[1:18] >> Uh well, first of all, thank you, Lisa,
[1:20] for having me here. Um of course, I
[1:23] guess we we do song stories inspire uh
[1:26] people and it's good to good to talk
[1:29] about some things.
[1:30] Uh flying fertility that some people
[1:32] doesn't talk about.
[1:34] Um
[1:35] It was a journey, like you say, yeah. Um
[1:38] my first uh child was born in 2015.
[1:42] Um
[1:43] It struggled me to get pregnant in the
[1:45] beginning. It took me like a 2 years.
[1:47] When I was ready to look for fertility
[1:49] thing, I got pregnant. So, I would like,
[1:52] "Okay, so." I was a fantastic
[1:55] pregnancy, no complications, anything at
[1:57] all. So, I have my baby. Then, uh 2
[2:01] years later, after being born in 2017,
[2:04] I start trying to conceive again, and I
[2:07] um
[2:08] well, it didn't happen right away, but
[2:10] since it takes some time with the first
[2:12] one, I decided to wait a little bit. I
[2:14] said, "Okay, it will it will come. It's
[2:16] just that it's not going to be fast."
[2:19] But then, in 2021,
[2:22] I realized that, "Okay, I'm already 40,
[2:25] and this is nothing is happening. Um the
[2:28] doctors see me, and they don't find
[2:30] anything."
[2:32] So,
[2:33] maybe what I have is what they call um
[2:37] fertility unknown
[2:38] or unknown. So, basically, I decided to
[2:42] um I start following someone in
[2:44] Instagram as a fertility journey.
[2:46] And I noticed what she uh
[2:50] was following, Dr. Soto. So, she went to
[2:53] him. So, I basically follow her for
[2:56] around 6 months, looking everything that
[2:58] she was doing, because at that time, she
[3:00] was trying to get pregnant.
[3:02] And it happened to her, and I said,
[3:04] "Hey, why not me?" Of course, at that
[3:06] moment, you start thinking about money
[3:08] and some other factors that, you know,
[3:11] goes um around that.
[3:13] But then, I was like, "Okay, I can't
[3:16] wait. I'm 40, so I'm not planning to
[3:18] have another child." Like plus
[3:21] plus the age, the eggs I have. So, I
[3:24] said, "Child, to Dr. uh in Soto's
[3:26] office."
[3:27] And we just had it.
[3:30] And at the appointment with the years we
[3:32] went to all the good tests for what
[3:36] totally totally unusual
[3:39] And
[3:40] that's how I get to you, because in some
[3:43] point of the of the uh Instagram thing,
[3:47] by following Dr. Soto's office, I found
[3:51] you came to some podcast or something
[3:54] like that. I say, "Okay, I've been in
[3:55] all that yoga or something that I used
[3:57] to do yoga. I did yoga prenatal yoga
[4:00] with my sons." So, it's like I think
[4:02] it's something that was a gift of
[4:04] You just try to see that. Of course,
[4:06] when you're in that journey and then you
[4:09] think
[4:10] and you don't know what your
[4:11] difficulties are.
[4:14] You're just trying to find any resources
[4:16] that help you to improve that egg
[4:18] quality.
[4:20] Um but of course, it's not like everyone
[4:23] has a degree. But that I was already for
[4:26] it.
[4:27] So, um
[4:29] So, that's basically how my journey
[4:32] start on the old days.
[4:35] Um but
[4:37] yes, there's some there were some times
[4:40] that I didn't want to move forward.
[4:42] There were some times that I did scare.
[4:44] There were some times that I would like
[4:46] when they told you about the amount of
[4:49] medication you have to put in use for
[4:51] it, you're like,
[4:52] "Okay, I Of course, it's always like
[4:55] what happen if I do everything else?"
[4:57] Huh?
[4:58] But today, when I have my baby and she's
[5:01] all wonderful walking,
[5:04] you just look ahead and say like, "Okay,
[5:06] it was worth it." You know, every shot,
[5:09] every appointment, um
[5:12] it was worthy. But of course, my my my
[5:15] best to me my best thing was that I
[5:18] already had that faith that
[5:21] I
[5:22] does doesn't matter what happened, I
[5:24] would try
[5:26] and I keep trying. So,
[5:28] here we are.
[5:29] >> [clears throat]
[5:30] >> It's a such a phenomenal story, Mary.
[5:32] You've been through so much. Let's take
[5:34] a step back. When you first met Dr.
[5:37] Soto, what did he tell you about your
[5:39] chances about becoming pregnant? And
[5:42] what made you feel comfortable about
[5:44] moving forward with him?
[5:46] >> So,
[5:47] the chances in that
[5:49] well, we talk about percent and things
[5:51] like that. That honestly, in the first
[5:52] appointment, it's hard to understand all
[5:55] the information.
[5:56] But, what I remember, it was too low
[5:58] that I looked at him and like, and
[6:02] had to get so on praying now with that
[6:04] percent. He said, "Of course, I do." And
[6:06] that's why we came into the movie cuz
[6:09] we tried to balance all of being a woman
[6:13] to to to help them to conceive.
[6:16] Uh
[6:17] what made me feel uh secure with him? I
[6:20] don't know, since the first time the
[6:22] connection with him was amazing. He was
[6:26] a very detailed He answered with
[6:29] patience every question that I had.
[6:32] And
[6:34] what we call sometime dumb question or
[6:37] something like that, but we think I
[6:39] always say I I told him like, "I'm sorry
[6:41] for asking this again, but who's on You
[6:43] told us always thanks for the
[6:44] questions." He repeated it was for 1
[6:46] hour our first appointment. And then
[6:49] another one was fancy. It was the
[6:52] longest appointment cuz
[6:53] he explained you everything like that to
[6:55] to He was never hurried to just okay I
[6:58] need to walk to the other patient. He
[7:00] was always taking the time.
[7:02] And when you are in that journey,
[7:04] sometime people doesn't understand that
[7:07] that's the real you. You need to feel
[7:10] secure with your partner, with your
[7:13] uh
[7:14] uh with your fertility doctor,
[7:18] with your
[7:19] doctor, even with their nurse that work
[7:22] with him. Uh every step
[7:25] was scared, but
[7:29] having the team that I had with him
[7:33] was
[7:34] the best Yeah. Feel like
[7:37] >> Yeah.
[7:37] >> It makes a world of a difference, and
[7:39] you are in such a vulnerable state, no
[7:42] doubt. But, at the end of the day you
[7:44] need to feel cared and supported and not
[7:47] just a number.
[7:48] >> Exactly.
[7:50] Was there a moment during the journey
[7:52] that you almost gave up or even
[7:54] considered switching to donor eggs?
[7:57] >> Oh, yes, because um
[7:59] the IVF uh in my case was basically
[8:03] didn't do phases. The first phase was
[8:05] the egg retrieval and they um a the
[8:09] embryo was there but they when I was
[8:11] ready to to have a transfer, my body
[8:15] start having too much uh makeup issues.
[8:19] And the doctors was like, "No, we can't
[8:21] put the baby right now in your uterus."
[8:23] So, "When are you going to dive
[8:24] results?" So,
[8:26] "So, we have to wait until your your
[8:28] period induces." "Okay, so."
[8:31] And so what's several things that in
[8:35] 2022 I just Monday I just wake up until
[8:38] my husband like, "I don't know." So.
[8:41] Mhm. So, it was like, "Are you sure?"
[8:44] And I was like, "Yeah, I don't know."
[8:47] So, 2022 was a totally denied
[8:50] year. And I say, "No, so I don't I don't
[8:53] I don't know."
[8:55] So,
[8:57] 2024
[8:58] I got a
[9:00] significant contract for the
[9:02] bank when the was was.
[9:06] By the way, I only have two. I'm only
[9:09] one was
[9:10] the first one. They
[9:14] So, I I I was in in
[9:18] in that uh
[9:19] in my in my office and I opened the
[9:22] email and I see that contract and
[9:25] that I was like,
[9:27] Oh, no. Sweet or kiss there ways.
[9:31] So, why you want to talk in a wave or
[9:34] why you want to have a close to you for?
[9:38] Because
[9:39] it was a great way.
[9:42] So, in that moment, I think you want
[9:47] with myself to
[9:49] try to figure it out everything before I
[9:51] went to my husband. And then when I went
[9:54] to meet him, it was like I think it was
[9:55] a walk of faith. Yeah. Because he wanted
[9:58] to do it. He wanted to do it, but he
[10:00] never pressured me
[10:02] to do something with me on my body that
[10:05] I wanted to do. It's which which it was
[10:07] a really big support because I don't
[10:10] feel the pressure that we already have.
[10:13] Right? We we don't need pressure from
[10:15] anyone because we already have the
[10:16] pressure. So,
[10:18] and
[10:20] So, what I used to say are you going to
[10:23] support me and say always let's do it.
[10:26] So, we request a appointment with Dr.
[10:29] Soto. I think he was so happy to see us
[10:31] back.
[10:33] And of course, everything was like,
[10:34] "Okay, now we only have one embryo that
[10:37] we're going to So, we say, "Okay, we can
[10:39] go back and do another retrieval or we
[10:41] can just move forward." And in that
[10:44] moment I said, "Okay, I'm sure I want to
[10:46] move forward. I don't think I want to go
[10:48] back."
[10:50] So,
[10:51] let's put it in this way cuz this is
[10:53] what I have been This is what I And I
[10:55] will do everything in my hands for this
[10:57] to happen.
[10:59] But, I don't think I am going back. I am
[11:01] already In that moment I was 44.
[11:05] And I was like I can't, you know,
[11:08] pay back
[11:09] chance again and go back and think my
[11:12] age and this. So,
[11:14] she was like, "Okay, let's do it."
[11:17] So, he recommend a couple of more steps
[11:19] on the on the journey
[11:22] before we put the embryo before we do
[11:24] the transfer.
[11:26] That he always was very honest and he
[11:28] said, "This doesn't guarantee that it's
[11:30] going to be 100% success." Exactly. But,
[11:33] it's going to give me a little more
[11:34] guidance on maybe what to do or what not
[11:36] to do.
[11:38] So, we decide to do that
[11:40] and they did the countdown for a day of
[11:43] 2024.
[11:45] December 2nd.
[11:46] >> All right.
[11:47] >> And Sophia born in August 2020.
[11:51] >> That's
[11:52] such a beautiful journey.
[11:55] What was the hardest part of the process
[11:57] for you emotionally?
[12:00] >> When
[12:02] when you have a decision about going to
[12:04] a fertility journey and then when
[12:08] everything start like
[12:10] falling apart.
[12:11] Like
[12:12] I start getting all these medical
[12:13] motions and every doctor I go and I know
[12:17] between all of them again and again and
[12:19] again.
[12:21] A it's frustrating.
[12:23] It's frustrating because you feel like
[12:26] uh like
[12:27] it's all I have and I want to
[12:29] they like the games they the war. You
[12:32] are
[12:33] against the So, they like lost the
[12:36] So,
[12:38] to to develop that success but like
[12:41] it I am doing the right thing. So, it's
[12:44] it's what the night really wants for me
[12:46] to have a wet child. Plus
[12:48] I already have my child waiting for me
[12:51] at home.
[12:52] So, that's a really scary part. You are
[12:54] looking to much for another one.
[12:58] And what happen if something happen to
[12:59] me and what is going to happen the one I
[13:01] have at home?
[13:04] So, it's a scary. It's awfully scary
[13:07] because
[13:08] sometimes you think that you are just a
[13:10] stubborn on something instead
[13:13] you being what you already have.
[13:16] Um
[13:17] but I have my reasons of why I have and
[13:19] have a little baby and not able to have
[13:21] the more and could be a mom. It's also
[13:24] to have a feeling for myself. It's also
[13:27] to take this journey.
[13:29] And today, a after 5 years
[13:35] I would say I don't regret any moment.
[13:39] Very emotional, verification
[13:43] so bad.
[13:44] It was worth it.
[13:46] When I see it
[13:48] her little face
[13:50] every morning it was worth it. So, uh
[13:53] when I see the connection with the two
[13:55] shots
[13:56] it was
[13:58] Absolutely. What was it about the
[14:00] fertility yoga that we did during the
[14:02] pandemic that you remember
[14:05] helping your mind-body connection,
[14:07] especially during such a trying time?
[14:10] Those times with you, Lisa
[14:13] disconnect me from the world. It was
[14:15] just
[14:17] me and my body
[14:20] trying to make it work.
[14:23] So
[14:24] a and you like was kind of hard because
[14:26] we were, you know, you were New York, I
[14:29] was here, so it was like uh the
[14:31] connection and the COVID and everything
[14:34] and I remember I was waiting for my home
[14:36] to be built and I was living in a small
[14:39] apartment in the meantime, so I didn't
[14:41] have much of space for the
[14:43] But um
[14:45] but that those moments I feel like I get
[14:48] discouraged for a while.
[14:50] for a hour and
[14:53] and getting focused on me for my
[14:55] fertility on my tolerance on my
[14:57] reproductive system.
[15:00] And
[15:01] and it helped me and it helped me a lot
[15:03] to the point that it was to remember I
[15:06] reached out to you before the
[15:08] Chris for the down for again and said
[15:10] like I really need this. And even when I
[15:12] was pregnant I couldn't do yoga, but I
[15:14] reached you I again and said like I
[15:16] would like to do this in my vacation and
[15:19] because I was so
[15:20] then I had a baby on me, but it was
[15:22] scary. So, pay them society that, you
[15:26] know, you have because you want
[15:28] everything to, you know, to be five.
[15:31] A
[15:32] Joanna
[15:33] I'm super really happy and really calm
[15:36] down. A
[15:38] And And I think it's it's it's part of
[15:41] the thing that
[15:43] was We're part of the team. I'm so
[15:45] grateful. I'm so grateful, Mary.
[15:48] Looking back, what would you tell a
[15:50] woman in her 40s who's been told her own
[15:53] eggs probably won't work?
[15:56] Hey, Mary.
[15:58] First of all, I had a lot of people who
[16:00] told me, "You're not going to have a
[16:02] baby in this age.
[16:04] Are you sure? I guess stop trying. Just
[16:07] live your life." Things like that.
[16:10] And
[16:12] after I do this and after we saw the
[16:15] principal Lisa in Mary's office, I want
[16:17] to encourage you, whoever you're looking
[16:19] near this point or thinking about it, I
[16:22] want to encourage you to do it.
[16:24] I I don't want to talk about my medical
[16:27] things, but
[16:28] it was a lot of things. So,
[16:32] it was a miracle baby. It's a long one
[16:34] to go with, but
[16:36] you can do it in the same way that I
[16:38] did. This is
[16:41] and it's worthy. After you see your baby
[16:44] and you see that you
[16:45] are strong enough to make it happen.
[16:48] It's
[16:50] A
[16:52] And And I I was also open and and
[16:55] investigate all options. Um of course,
[16:58] for my age, I was just thinking about
[17:00] how long is it going to be and I was
[17:02] analyzing all the things.
[17:04] But if you need to go to a donor,
[17:07] go ahead. If you need to go to
[17:11] a
[17:12] another
[17:14] fertility treatment, go ahead. Just
[17:16] don't stop trying because
[17:19] A again, I don't regret anything on my
[17:22] journey, but uh
[17:25] sometimes we wait.
[17:27] And uh huh
[17:28] Yes, sometimes the waiting is something
[17:31] that uh
[17:33] not always is good
[17:34] uh
[17:36] because
[17:37] I know some things happen on my way that
[17:40] they have to happen. Yeah, that's also
[17:43] uh
[17:43] we also have to work parts.
[17:46] And
[17:47] yeah, the the ideal is that everything
[17:50] be natural, that everything be, you
[17:53] know,
[17:54] normal. Yes, but I remember one day that
[17:57] I told don't like
[18:00] because this is my normal one pregnancy
[18:02] and you look at me like you said totally
[18:04] no.
[18:05] Right, so it's normal. It's just that
[18:08] uh
[18:10] the science is too good at this point
[18:13] that it's make a people change home too.
[18:16] And at the same question
[18:19] to go and check it out with that
[18:21] fertility process that we need to create
[18:24] a way for you to reach out and holding
[18:27] you
[18:28] support your journey.
[18:29] >> Mary, I'm so grateful that you shared
[18:31] this today. I was there for your special
[18:34] journey and your story is such a
[18:37] beautiful reminder that every fertility
[18:41] journey is special and different and
[18:43] that women deserve to be informed,
[18:45] supported, and empowered throughout the
[18:48] TTC journey. Thank you for being here
[18:50] today.
[18:50] >> Thank you very much, Lisa, for having me
[18:53] here. That's something that I really
[18:55] want to share because
[18:57] uh for some people this is just a a
[19:00] nobody want to want to know. No, I
[19:02] really want you all to
[19:03] I really want to tell the woman that I'm
[19:06] looking they saw this episode today that
[19:10] they can do it. It's this all right.
[19:13] Just you get a good team, go all for it.
[19:17] >> So special, Mary. Thank you so much for
[19:20] normalizing these conversations.
[19:23] You're going to help so many women on
[19:25] their journey to conceive. Thank you.
[19:27] Thank you. Thank you, Melissa.
