The Katha Upanishad does not begin with doctrine. It begins with a boy watching his father give away the wrong things and having the courage to say so. This act—small, domestic, pointed with filial respect—opens a conversation that will eventually reach the feet of Yama, the god of death himself, and ask the questions that matter most: What is worth wanting? What comes after the body dies? Is there escape from the wheel of reward and punishment that keeps the soul spinning through heaven and hell, again and again?

In the Vedantic tradition, the Upanishads represent what is called the Jnana Kanda—the wisdom section of the Vedas, as distinct from the Karma Kanda, or action section. The Karma Kanda teaches ritual, sacrifice, and ethical action in order to earn merit and secure earthly prosperity, children, and eventually a place in heaven. This is not presented as evil; it is presented as incomplete. A person follows the proper protocols—performs the yagna, makes the offering, distributes gifts, fasts, tends the sacred fire—and the universe responds with reward. The logic is mechanical and reliable: do this, get that. Heaven is the promised outcome, described in the teaching with almost comedic abundance: eternal youth, freedom from disease, strength without weakness, comfort without limit. It is a five-star hotel, as the teacher puts it, and entry is guaranteed if you earn enough merit.

But—and here the Upanishad's genius unfolds—there is a fatal flaw in this plan. The merit runs out. The account empties. When your balance reaches zero, you are evicted from heaven and sent back down into the world of work and striving and small sufferings. Back to the job, back to the hard labor, back to the beginning. The cycle repeats. This is the problem the Upanishad means to solve, and it begins not with theory but with a story: a father performing a great sacrificial ceremony, distributing gifts to the Brahmins, going through all the motions of a man securing his passage to heaven. His name is Vajashrava. His son is Nachiketa.

Nachiketa is described simply as intelligent. He watches his father compile a list—which Brahmin gets which gift, careful accounting, careful distribution. And he notices something that pierces through the ceremony: the gifts are not gifts. They are refuse. His father is giving away old cows, so weak they can barely drink water, so feeble they can no longer chew grass, sterile and declining, good for nothing but a final meal. These are creatures approaching death. To call this charity is to mistake appearance for reality. To accept it as a proper offering to the gods is to misunderstand the meaning of gift entirely. Gift, the boy reasons in his clarity, means you give what is best. It means you give what has value. It means the offering reflects the giver's understanding and integrity. A false gift is no gift at all.

In his young certainty, Nachiketa approaches his father. "To whom are you giving me?" The implication is cutting: if this is how you give to the gods, to the Brahmins, to the world, then what will you do with me, your son, your living gift? The father is annoyed. He is being questioned. He is being corrected, in front of witnesses, by a child. In anger—or perhaps in the moment beyond anger where a man speaks a curse he cannot take back—the father says, "I give you to Yama, the god of death." And Nachiketa, in an act that becomes the bridge into the Upanishad's true teaching, takes his father at his word. He travels to the house of Yama. He will face death itself.

This is the architecture of the Katha Upanishad's genius. The story of the boy and his father establishes the problem: the Karma Kanda promises fulfillment through ritual action and merit, but the reward is temporary and the cycle is endless. There is no lasting peace; there is only the return, again and again, to work, to striving, to the old repetition. The intelligent person eventually becomes exhausted by this. Why am I doing this? they ask. Why must the joy always end? Why must I always come back? Is there no other way?

The conversation between Nachiketa and Yama—which unfolds across the Upanishad's dialogue—is the Upanishad's answer. Yama, the lord of death, is not presented as a demon or a punisher. He is a teacher, a dignified presence, even generous. He is impressed by the boy's courage and offers him boons—wealth, long life, power, pleasure, whatever Nachiketa desires. These are the prizes the world chases; Yama offers them freely. And Nachiketa, with the same clarity that cut through his father's false gifts, refuses them one by one.

What he asks for instead is knowledge—knowledge of what lies beyond death, knowledge of the eternal, knowledge of the self that does not perish when the body perishes. He asks to know the difference between the permanent and the temporary, the real and the apparent. And Yama, recognizing in the boy a seeker of genuine wisdom, begins to teach him the deepest truths of the Upanishads: the nature of Brahman (the ultimate reality), the distinction between the individual self and the universal self, the recognition that all apparent separations and diversities are ultimately one unified consciousness.

The teaching centers on recognizing what is often described using the mantra Om—the sacred syllable that contains and represents the infinite. Through understanding Om, through direct realization of one's identity with Brahman, the cycle of return is broken. There is no more departure to heaven followed by expulsion. There is no more earning and spending of merit. There is only the unchanging peace of moksha, liberation—the permanent recognition that the true self was never bound, never dying, never in need of rescue.

The Katha Upanishad thus presents a complete movement: from the world of appearances and earning and spending, through genuine questioning and the courage to face truth, to the threshold of ultimate realization. The boy's initial act—questioning his father's false gifts—is not separate from the highest teaching; it is continuous with it. The discrimination that notices a false gift is the discrimination that will later distinguish the eternal from the temporary, the real from the apparent. The refusal to accept appearance as truth is the beginning of wisdom.

In the Vedantic understanding, this is why the Upanishads are so treasured. They do not merely describe the problem; they guide the mind toward direct knowledge. They use story, dialogue, metaphor, and direct instruction to awaken in the reader (or listener) the recognition of their true nature. And the Katha Upanishad does this with particular charm and directness, beginning as it does with a domestic scene—a father, a son, a breach of trust, an act of conscience—that anyone can recognize and understand. From there, step by step, the dialogue ascends toward the highest knowledge, and the reader climbs with it.

[0:00] be Shanti

[0:03] Om Shanti Shanti Shanti

[0:09] Hari Om Tat Sat.

[0:12] >> [clears throat and cough]

[0:15] >> So, today I'm substituting

[0:19] one class of Katha Upanishad class.

[0:22] Our Swami Jnanasudhananda

[0:26] is for some other

[0:29] work. He's busy.

[0:31] So, Katha Upanishad is one of the as you

[0:34] know

[0:35] you all know Upanishad is the cream

[0:39] of the wisdom of

[0:41] spiritual life, ultimate reality, truth.

[0:45] You can

[0:47] you can just

[0:49] the Vedas has two segment.

[0:52] One is called the Karma Kanda, another

[0:54] is called Jnana Kanda.

[0:57] Karma Kanda, first of all

[0:59] people want to be wealthy,

[1:02] peaceful, joyful, enjoy the life.

[1:05] Not in a negative way,

[1:07] but in a positive way,

[1:09] honorable way.

[1:12] So, built on character and things. So,

[1:15] the scriptures have suggested Veda first

[1:18] division.

[1:19] Karma Kanda, you do Karma.

[1:27] If you do a Yagna

[1:29] offering your oblation for God,

[1:32] do anything, then that Karma leads you

[1:35] to freedom.

[1:37] Another Karma leads you to bondages.

[1:39] So, Vedic wisdom

[1:42] takes everyone to the experience of life

[1:45] from earthly

[1:47] good living from

[1:49] helpless life to a life of fulfillment,

[1:53] prosperity, wealth,

[1:55] dignity,

[1:57] and also after death

[1:59] go to heaven

[2:00] five star hotel

[2:02] better and I mean I mean it is better uh

[2:06] facilities and you can get youth you'll

[2:10] be youthful all the time, you'll be

[2:11] strong all the time, you don't be old

[2:13] any time, there'll be no disease any

[2:15] time. So this is a heaven you go, enjoy,

[2:18] but that is a also come back.

[2:22] After finishing some

[2:23] your good uh reward

[2:27] and your point gone

[2:29] then

[2:30] they will be driving you out from the

[2:32] hotel, well the five star hotel, but

[2:34] now you

[2:36] you extend your further money, otherwise

[2:39] get out. Yeah? But when you go they will

[2:42] invite you, come come sir, this sir,

[2:44] this is your room, this is key, this is

[2:46] that.

[2:47] But if the punnam the merit goes down

[2:51] and when it is zero, then hey

[2:54] where is money? And no money, so get

[2:56] out.

[3:01] goes to the heaven

[3:03] And and heaven is not a good experience.

[3:06] that experience because who knows

[3:10] every every time you earn good merit

[3:13] and I enjoy few days and then come back

[3:15] again. Again hell is world.

[3:18] Uh in your office you work hard

[3:21] and go to promotion and few uh in

[3:24] incentive you like

[3:26] giving you the free air ticket to Hawaii

[3:29] and all those hotel and every free

[3:32] enjoyment. But when it is finished you

[3:35] come back again, you join your job

[3:36] again. Oh my god, again hell is job. The

[3:39] hard harder work.

[3:40] >> More work.

[3:41] >> More work. So this is the way it goes on

[3:43] and people then get tired. Am I going to

[3:46] heaven? Why? Am I working so much? Why?

[3:49] Why I get a joy, joy, but the joy is

[3:52] limited As in the sense that world joy

[3:54] is limited. So in heaven also, it may be

[3:57] a little prolonged,

[3:59] but it is also it has an end. It brings

[4:02] back again into the cycle of suffering

[4:04] and pain again to go over. Is it a

[4:08] good way to go?

[4:10] Then they said, "No, no, no, it is not."

[4:12] Then

[4:13] then comes the path of they are called

[4:16] the

[4:17] be- vedango

[4:18] not not vedango uh karma kanda gyan

[4:21] kanda.

[4:22] The wisdom side and that is the called

[4:25] the Upanishad. But Katha Upanishad is a

[4:27] very sweet Upanishad. It's charming,

[4:30] very charming. It's a interesting

[4:34] because that starts with a beautiful

[4:36] story. So you know that story. I I if I

[4:38] go to the story we cannot go some

[4:41] to some I said today is a overall talk

[4:43] so I can do whatever I like.

[4:47] So

[4:49] this Upanishad starts with a very

[4:52] beautiful

[4:53] s-

[4:54] anecdote. It says that there was a great

[5:00] the

[5:01] giver of gift.

[5:04] And

[5:06] they they they did he performed a big

[5:08] ceremony.

[5:10] In Indian ceremonies wherever you go,

[5:12] food is the one thing important.

[5:15] >> [laughter]

[5:16] >> If there is no food, there is no

[5:17] ceremony.

[5:18] Uh see even our Durga Puja in the

[5:21] um

[5:22] say in our Santa Barbara

[5:25] Puja they come

[5:27] maybe late, that's okay. Puja they I

[5:29] offer flower, then that may be okay. If

[5:31] not, but prasad is first.

[5:34] Some people come and take the seats of

[5:36] the prasad tables, not even going to the

[5:39] temple.

[5:40] Because the ceremony means prasad.

[5:43] So [snorts] now a big ceremony means big

[5:46] feeding arrangement.

[5:48] So,

[5:49] Ushana Vajashravasa, that one

[5:53] Vajashrava, this name the old Sanskrit

[5:56] name Vajashrava.

[5:58] His son was Uddalaka.

[6:01] And he was performing a big

[6:04] um

[6:05] sacrificial fire

[6:07] by which he he wants to go to heaven

[6:10] by performing that rituals and sacrifice

[6:13] and fasting and all these

[6:15] um

[6:16] steps to follow. And at the end of them

[6:19] to give away gift.

[6:21] You have to give a gift. If you don't

[6:22] give gift and feed people, then your

[6:25] result will not come to you.

[6:29] But if you want God realization, you

[6:31] need not have to do anything. Love God,

[6:33] that's enough.

[6:34] But if you want to go to heaven,

[6:36] then you follow the protocol this there.

[6:38] Do this, do this, do this, do this, do

[6:40] this. And if you there is a fault,

[6:43] uh then you don't get the result.

[6:45] So, now

[6:47] the boy the father was distributing

[6:51] all the gifts to give to so many

[6:53] Brahmins.

[6:54] Holy people came.

[6:55] So,

[6:56] giving some gift to everyone.

[7:00] And this means a small boy, his name was

[7:02] Nachiketa.

[7:04] Uh

[7:05] Tatsaha Nachiketa nama putra

[7:10] Beautiful. He has a son whose name was

[7:12] Nachiketa.

[7:15] Now,

[7:16] >> [clears throat]

[7:17] >> he had the intelligent boy, not

[7:18] disrespectful for his

[7:21] Disrespectful and intelligence are

[7:23] different.

[7:24] He saw intelligently [clears throat] saw

[7:26] his father is giving away gift.

[7:30] Uh

[7:31] Some people give house clearing gift,

[7:33] no?

[7:35] That means

[7:36] you cannot use anymore, you have to

[7:38] throw away.

[7:39] Then you can make a big show that I am

[7:41] charity, I am giving away.

[7:44] But gift is not like that. Gift should

[7:45] be

[7:46] What is the best thing you have to give?

[7:48] Giving means you should give what is the

[7:50] best.

[7:52] And this is this is fake gift. When you

[7:56] give the worst thing and

[7:59] get the name, "Oh, I'm a big donor."

[8:04] So, this father was giving making a list

[8:07] of

[8:08] his

[8:09] things to be giving away to which

[8:11] Brahmin.

[8:13] Uh obstetrician station big station will

[8:16] get this smaller will be this like that.

[8:18] All list he was doing. And he noticed

[8:21] his son noticed Nachiketa that his

[8:23] father is giving away the gifts which

[8:26] are not gifts.

[8:28] What they're giving?

[8:38] Then seeing his father [clears throat]

[8:40] distributing the gifts

[8:44] in him

[8:46] faith and trust came.

[8:48] I belong to a noble family. My father

[8:51] belongs to a noble family and he has

[8:54] done the performing this rituals. He

[8:56] should give good gifts.

[8:58] Proper gifts. But he's not giving. What

[9:01] he's giving?

[9:10] He's in those days giving costly thing

[9:14] is the cows.

[9:16] Because cows get you can get the milk

[9:19] for for household life. Cows are India

[9:22] was full of That's why cow worship is so

[9:25] much. Like in this country horse

[9:26] worship.

[9:28] Uh we don't cut kill the horse

[9:31] and eat the meat here in this country.

[9:33] So, India that's why they came go mata

[9:36] because the cow gives so much everything

[9:40] of the cow is utilized for the human

[9:43] survival. The babies eat the milk and

[9:46] etc. etc. But

[9:49] his father was giving gift what? Pito

[9:52] Udaka, very beautiful.

[9:54] Pito money drunk

[9:56] Udaka means water.

[9:58] That means giving such cow

[10:01] who is so old, he cannot even drink

[10:04] little water.

[10:07] Pito Udaka.

[10:09] He's he becomes so weak.

[10:12] Jagdha Trina Trina means the grass.

[10:16] Jagdha means

[10:18] he's he's chewing

[10:20] the jaws not sufficient to chew the

[10:23] grass even. That means they're going to

[10:25] die soon.

[10:26] Main thing is that. But Upanishad

[10:28] presents it the this father is giving

[10:30] this gift of

[10:32] Pito Udaka, that type of

[10:35] cows which have drunk last time the

[10:39] drink drinking water. He cannot money he

[10:41] will die soon within few days.

[10:43] And Jagdha Trina, he may live little

[10:45] longer. Then he can chew little, but

[10:49] almost fading his eating

[10:51] ability. And Dugdha Doha.

[10:54] Next category is giving something which

[10:56] will not give any more milk.

[10:59] That time Nirindriya, they cannot stand.

[11:02] They are so weak, probably falling down.

[11:05] Such is the gift and he thought my

[11:08] father is giving away this gift.

[11:12] Then father will not go to the heaven.

[11:15] So

[11:16] let me go and ask

[11:18] whom you are giving me?

[11:21] To the father, the son is the best gift,

[11:24] is it not?

[11:25] A bright brilliant son.

[11:28] He said, you are giving your gift

[11:31] to whom you are giving me?

[11:33] The father got annoyed, no? Ananda namo

[11:36] te loka tan sagacchati tadadat if one

[11:40] gives such type of gifts

[11:43] so

[11:44] they will not go to heaven because the

[11:46] gift is improper gift.

[11:52] Therefore, with that faith and trust in

[11:55] him and faith and trust in father

[11:58] father's

[11:59] good well-wishing the father's

[12:02] the future goal

[12:04] say so who was a pitara

[12:07] um

[12:08] the Nachiketa, the boy, went to his

[12:10] father

[12:12] and he said tato kasmai mam dasyasi

[12:15] my father

[12:16] you are giving so many gifts. I'm also

[12:19] your gift. So, who you are giving me?

[12:22] And his intention is that

[12:26] if you give some bad gift, I am the best

[12:29] gift, so it will balance. Gift will be

[12:31] balanced.

[12:32] So, my father's intention about going

[12:34] heaven will be successful.

[12:37] So, he went there and father was

[12:40] annoyed. Hey, why are you disturbing?

[12:42] Go. Now, go and play.

[12:44] You're a young boy, you don't need not

[12:45] have to

[12:47] put your head here.

[12:48] Dutiyam, again the child came after five

[12:51] sometime guru and then came back. Dad,

[12:54] whom you are you giving me? To whom you

[12:57] are donate giving gift as

[12:59] my life as

[13:01] Dutiyam, Tritiyam, third time when he

[13:03] came and dad got little angry.

[13:06] And then he say

[13:09] mit dutiyam tritiyam mrit tvat dadamiti.

[13:12] I give you to death, mrityu.

[13:15] That means you go to the Yama's house.

[13:19] The house of the death dead house of the

[13:22] dead.

[13:23] That one is god of death.

[13:26] And Hindus have god of death also. God

[13:28] of life, god of death, god of eyes, god

[13:31] of hand, god of arm, god of leg, god of

[13:35] every every part

[13:37] every organ has a corresponding god

[13:40] controlled by that god. Anyhow, the

[13:42] death is we all know death. So, I will I

[13:45] give you to the death.

[13:47] And as soon as father says giving to the

[13:50] death

[13:51] his son

[13:55] See that I

[13:56] self-confidence.

[13:57] I am not a bad boy. I'm very

[14:00] intelligent, very talented.

[14:03] But I may not be the first grade among

[14:06] many.

[14:08] But I

[14:11] may be second grade

[14:13] to so many.

[14:14] But king

[14:16] I'm

[14:19] not a third grade boy. I'm not a

[14:21] callous. I'm not a fool. I'm not an

[14:23] idiot. So, why my father will give me

[14:26] away to the

[14:27] death? Death means done.

[14:31] Then he said

[14:33] Then he said, "No.

[14:35] My father is really loves me.

[14:37] So, he's sending me to the god of death.

[14:42] And I can ask to ask the god of death my

[14:46] spiritual question.

[14:48] I can unveil

[14:50] the spiritual insight.

[14:53] What life after death? Where do we go?

[14:56] That's a big question.

[14:58] My dad is making an opportunity for me

[15:02] to go to the lord god of the death.

[15:05] Who can

[15:07] teach me

[15:08] how to transcend life and live in

[15:11] eternity conquering death.

[15:13] That is the life's purpose, no?

[15:15] Conquering death. We are every moment

[15:17] frightened frightened frightened. Why?

[15:20] What will happen? What will happen? What

[15:21] will happen? I'll die.

[15:23] I will be sick. I will be I'll lose

[15:26] this.

[15:27] Nothing to lose. You can't get death.

[15:30] So, that is the thing. The boy

[15:33] thought so much

[15:34] with the small incident. His father only

[15:37] say I give it to to to the God of death.

[15:41] And he thought, my father is so

[15:43] considerate.

[15:45] He's sending me to the God of death

[15:49] to understand what is beyond death. Who

[15:51] can teach me except in the God of death?

[15:54] So, he took it in a positive sense.

[15:57] Had been in our life, I will curse our

[15:59] father. There is somebody say, my father

[16:01] is the I got it that my father is bad

[16:04] and he did this. That's why I am in so

[16:06] my disease is like that because my

[16:08] father gave it to me. I hate everything

[16:11] father's fault.

[16:14] But this [clears throat] boy

[16:16] same father, he looked at a different

[16:18] angle.

[16:19] That's when the the mind becomes pure,

[16:21] it gives you a right direction to

[16:23] understand truth.

[16:25] And that fundamental quality is

[16:26] shraddha.

[16:28] Swami Vivekananda's

[16:30] emphasis on shraddha is very remarkable.

[16:34] But if you have no you have faith and

[16:36] trust in

[16:38] 100,000 gods and goddesses and you have

[16:40] no faith in yourself and trust in

[16:42] yourself,

[16:43] then you are the atheist.

[16:46] Well, people used to think that it is

[16:48] who believe in God, huh?

[16:51] They are called theist, no?

[16:54] But those who believe in not himself, he

[16:56] is the

[16:57] atheist.

[17:00] So, that way

[17:01] then he

[17:03] then he went to his father and said,

[17:04] "Dad, now I'm going to the

[17:07] Jama's house, the death God of death."

[17:12] And he said,

[17:14] I understood the mind of the father. He

[17:16] is shocked now. And if I did I utter

[17:18] such word, my son is now going to the

[17:21] god of death. That means Jama dead.

[17:25] I'll not see him anymore. What will

[17:27] happen?

[17:28] And this son said, "Did I see my father?

[17:36] See, look back your forefathers.

[17:39] They stand on truth.

[17:41] And you

[17:43] should hold on to truth.

[17:46] I shall also follow the truth.

[17:48] Anupasya yatha purve, as is the

[17:51] tradition of the family, holding on to

[17:53] truth and values of life.

[17:56] Because you said go to Jama's death now,

[17:58] cannot change your words. No, no, sorry,

[18:01] sorry. I said something wrong.

[18:03] Out of anger I said don't take it

[18:04] seriously. No such thing. You said it is

[18:08] true and I'll follow that.

[18:10] So, you remember also your father. He's

[18:13] giving advice to his father. Small boy.

[18:15] You now understand that our

[18:18] our family tradition is so great. So,

[18:21] what has been given in the earlier time

[18:23] and we should follow that tradition.

[18:26] Otherwise, what is the life?

[18:32] This is beautiful statement of the our

[18:36] uh

[18:37] Kathopanishad. Shasyamiva martyo jayate

[18:40] punah pachyate punah. Life is what?

[18:43] What is shasya? Shasya means

[18:47] a grains. Rice, paddy, uh or what do you

[18:52] call?

[18:54] Job.

[18:55] Flower, no, no, key. Um

[18:59] What are what we grow? Rice uh parallel

[19:02] to rice, other other items.

[19:03] >> Wheat.

[19:04] >> Wheat

[19:06] and and what else?

[19:08] Barley, like that. So, it is like you

[19:11] plant

[19:13] a barley plant or a

[19:18] wheat

[19:20] and it grows.

[19:21] Seed comes to sapling, sapling grows and

[19:25] it for some day with water and struggle

[19:28] and then some grains grow there and then

[19:32] dries out and fall down.

[19:34] Our life is like that.

[19:40] Is

[19:42] our human life

[19:43] so meaningless that we are born

[19:46] like like the paddy, it grows in the

[19:49] field

[19:50] and grows grows grows grows and mature

[19:53] sometimes and after ripening they fall

[19:55] down and people cut and throw away. The

[19:57] life is like that. There is no meaning,

[19:59] there is no purpose. Why you are born,

[20:01] where shall I go? What is the goal of

[20:03] life? Why am I born here?

[20:06] So

[20:07] is this life like that? That is the

[20:09] question.

[20:10] He is talking to his father. Life is not

[20:13] like that.

[20:15] Therefore I am going.

[20:18] And the boy

[20:20] saluted dad and walked into the Jama's

[20:24] house.

[20:26] Yeah, Jama's house means see that I do

[20:28] not I do not heavenly path he went like

[20:30] that.

[20:31] But physically he went to a guru's

[20:33] house.

[20:36] Actually mitu mitu means death.

[20:40] Who knows the secret what is beyond

[20:42] death.

[20:43] So the Brahmins, they used to know. So

[20:46] the

[20:47] practically literally mean he left his

[20:49] home and went to his guru's house.

[20:54] And he's a very small boy.

[20:56] But determined.

[20:58] He went to his guru's house.

[21:01] It is not like that, hey guru, I come,

[21:03] give me something.

[21:05] Huh? That is a you have to wait.

[21:08] And it happened that guru

[21:11] went for

[21:12] some business.

[21:15] Meaning

[21:16] he went for maybe some other place and

[21:19] guru was not at the house.

[21:22] And he's a Brahmin boy has come.

[21:25] He's a

[21:27] a guest.

[21:28] In Indian system, guest is like God.

[21:32] Atithi devo bhava.

[21:35] Atithi, you treat your guest like God,

[21:39] no less than that.

[21:42] So, the household ladies who are in the

[21:44] home

[21:46] they said, "My child, you are what do

[21:48] you want?"

[21:49] No, I want to meet first Jamas, the God

[21:52] of death.

[21:54] He was oh, he he will come. Why not you

[21:57] are just come and have something to

[21:59] breakfast or lunch or something? No.

[22:03] My dad has sent me not for eating, not

[22:05] for not for breakfast or lunch.

[22:08] I I come to see him. So, I'll see him.

[22:12] And the boy was so determined that he

[22:15] didn't ate, drank a little drop of

[22:17] water.

[22:18] And

[22:19] fasting

[22:21] till the

[22:24] guru came, teacher came back.

[22:27] After 3 days

[22:29] guru came back.

[22:31] And they naturally the

[22:34] family members all told,

[22:37] "You, Jama,

[22:39] he's here in your house, a guest

[22:42] and a Brahmin guest,

[22:44] a very honorable guest,

[22:46] pure in character, is waiting at your

[22:48] door without without eating anything.

[22:51] You will

[22:52] incur big great sin.

[22:55] Just please him. Go and please him so

[22:57] that you give some boon so that this

[23:00] this impact will go away. We are

[23:02] householder, it will be cast upon our

[23:04] life then.

[23:05] >> It's interesting because his father was

[23:08] a king. Traditionally kings are

[23:10] Kshatriya family.

[23:12] So he should be a Kshatriya son, not the

[23:14] Brahmins son.

[23:15] >> I think

[23:16] >> I think his father was

[23:17] >> Maybe but sometimes he

[23:19] here sometimes it says Brahmin. Maybe

[23:21] matters little. This is story. Who knows

[23:23] what is happened.

[23:25] We We should not go to this detail but

[23:28] the more is this story, beautiful

[23:29] interesting story to understand one

[23:32] should be

[23:34] waiting for the truth.

[23:36] Uh how should not compromise with

[23:38] anything unless I see the

[23:40] I realize God, no? This is the

[23:42] interpretation here.

[23:45] And we'll find that how this boy is so

[23:47] intelligent to put the question,

[23:49] first question, second question, third

[23:52] question. That is very systematic way of

[23:56] asking the question and getting the

[23:58] reply from guru.

[24:00] Mhm. First of all,

[24:02] so he said

[24:05] Okay my boy, you are here in my house.

[24:08] You are guest for three nights and days

[24:10] and nights I hear.

[24:12] So please I am very

[24:14] really sorry I am late but you have not

[24:17] eaten anything. I said ask for three

[24:19] boons for three days.

[24:22] You You remain here fasted fasting for

[24:24] last three days and waiting for me to

[24:27] wait and I ask the questions. So first I

[24:30] give you three boons extra. Ask me what

[24:32] you want. Whatever you want I'll give

[24:34] you.

[24:35] What the boy wanted first?

[24:40] She said

[24:41] first she

[24:43] asked for the boon for his father.

[24:46] He said Shanto Sankalpa.

[24:49] I know I am is the most

[24:52] charming young son

[24:55] and I have come out of the house

[24:58] in guru's house.

[25:01] And my father will be very anxious, full

[25:03] of anxiety.

[25:05] Because of not

[25:07] losing me because of losing me.

[25:10] Therefore,

[25:11] let my father sleep well.

[25:15] And let my father

[25:17] in one boon, two two two two things he

[25:19] asked. Let my father

[25:22] be peacefully can sleep. And also when I

[25:26] go back,

[25:27] he recognizes me.

[25:30] Otherwise, you say the ghost has come,

[25:31] no?

[25:34] Therefore, in one boon,

[25:36] first is father's well-being. See, watch

[25:39] that. Who father has asked him to go to

[25:43] the house of the death.

[25:45] But son is first asking the welfare of

[25:48] the father. Let him sleep well, and let

[25:50] him recognize me when I go back.

[25:53] >> Is the third boon given in there also,

[25:55] right?

[25:55] >> Uh, let us see.

[25:57] >> He gets to go back and

[25:59] >> Prathama varam vrune. So,

[26:03] and then and guru says, "Okay."

[26:06] Mhm.

[26:07] Your father will be perfectly in peace

[26:10] and and when you go back, he will be

[26:13] able to

[26:14] recognize you.

[26:16] First part is done. Second part

[26:20] is that

[26:22] there is heaven.

[26:23] All the whole dualistic

[26:26] is talking of heaven.

[26:28] Angel

[26:30] and Hindu gods, goddesses, dancers, uh,

[26:35] singers, the musicians, different plane

[26:38] of world is there.

[26:40] So, there heavenly place, uh? That's why

[26:42] I say

[26:52] Uve titva asanaya pipase.

[26:59] >> I've heard that there is in the saga,

[27:02] there is a heaven.

[27:03] Not a heaven, there are heavens.

[27:06] And no no

[27:08] there is nothing to be frightened about.

[27:11] Because death has no control over that.

[27:14] Because they are done their

[27:17] And they can live longer.

[27:19] And also not

[27:22] You would be God of death does not rule

[27:24] there with a rod hand in hand and punish

[27:28] bad karma go to hell, good karma go to

[27:30] heaven. There there is no there there is

[27:32] no ruling over that.

[27:35] So there is heaven.

[27:37] And you don't control there.

[27:40] And not

[27:42] no one becomes frightened about old age.

[27:46] You do not know when you reach after 80

[27:48] then you understand what is old age.

[27:52] >> [laughter]

[27:53] >> So

[27:55] So he's saying that you are not there in

[27:57] in there is no jar jar means old age.

[28:02] And

[28:04] people have no hunger, no thirst.

[28:07] They they conquering all this they move

[28:11] the day saga look at they enjoy

[28:13] the heaven.

[28:16] Now is there any way

[28:19] one can go to that? See one step the

[28:21] world

[28:23] to be in peace.

[28:25] That peace is not permanent peace.

[28:27] Dissatisfied with that he's asking the

[28:29] second great question.

[28:31] After death where do you go?

[28:34] There I have heard there are heaven.

[28:37] And people go to heaven.

[28:39] Why they go to heaven?

[28:41] Because there is a place of freedom.

[28:43] No old age.

[28:45] No sickness.

[28:47] No thirst.

[28:49] No You remain

[28:51] perfectly satisfied there, joyful. So,

[28:55] I want to know how to go there.

[28:57] And then he said, "Okay.

[29:06] Then I know, please tell me how one can

[29:09] reach the heaven."

[29:12] How to arrange for the home of fire,

[29:16] how to organize the

[29:18] fire woods,

[29:20] what what triangle is to be done, what

[29:22] mantras are to be chanted. So, let me

[29:25] know all these things.

[29:32] I'm

[29:34] telling you now, Nachiketa, now you

[29:36] learn.

[29:38] This is the

[29:42] And that the Agni, the the fire,

[29:45] performing the fire sacrifice, you that

[29:48] which lead you to the heaven. I'm

[29:51] telling you that.

[29:53] So,

[29:54] you will learn that. And then the guru

[29:58] taught him how to lay the bricks, how to

[30:02] lay the organize the

[30:04] wood, as I said, with how to put the

[30:07] home of fire,

[30:08] put in the fire ghee, what mantra to

[30:11] chant, all these things, he said.

[30:13] And

[30:14] they have As soon as the teacher said

[30:17] that,

[30:18] the student is so bright, the boy

[30:20] Nachiketa, he immediately

[30:23] Listen, listen, listen. Sir, what did

[30:25] you say?

[30:26] Am I correct? And he memorized instantly

[30:29] all the same thing.

[30:31] How to organize everything, how to do

[30:34] the mantra, how to end it with

[30:36] prayer, etc., etc. As you do our

[30:39] As you do our home of fire. And the You

[30:41] have Most of you have perhaps seen our

[30:44] puja time. We at the end we do the whole

[30:46] fire.

[30:47] And there is more ritualistic, more

[30:49] elaborate things.

[30:51] And but he remembered everything.

[30:53] And he he he recapitulated everything.

[30:56] And the guru was very pleased.

[30:58] And hurry

[31:00] you are so bright boy that you remain

[31:02] remain remember immediately we and in

[31:04] without verbatim you remember. Okay, I

[31:06] give you extra boon.

[31:08] That's it.

[31:10] Eh?

[31:11] Because of his

[31:12] sincerity, because of his honesty and

[31:15] good learning mind.

[31:17] So guru gave him another boon.

[31:20] What is the boon?

[31:21] Well, now onward

[31:23] anyone wants to go to heaven will have

[31:26] to perform this

[31:27] sacrificial fire.

[31:29] And they will it will be named after

[31:31] you.

[31:33] It's name is Nachiketa Agni.

[31:36] The fire named Nachiketa. That means you

[31:39] will be immortal.

[31:41] Because people will remember you that I

[31:43] will have to perform Nachiketa Yagna.

[31:47] And after performing that only you will

[31:49] go to heaven.

[31:50] So that's the extra boon.

[31:53] But he was not much interested but it

[31:55] got okay.

[31:57] That's okay.

[31:58] It is the second boon.

[32:00] Third boon

[32:04] >> [clears throat]

[32:14] >> Now

[32:15] now the third boon is verse number 20.

[32:19] Chapter 1.

[32:21] He says "Ye yam prete vichikitsa

[32:23] manushye asti te ayam asti ticha eke

[32:29] etad vidyam anushishtas

[32:32] varanam eshu varas tritiyo. My third

[32:35] boon is like this.

[32:37] A young, pretty busy in this world.

[32:41] There is a question. There is a

[32:43] doubt.

[32:44] All the time people ask about that.

[32:47] Is there any life afterwards? Is there

[32:49] any place eternally after death?

[32:52] Is there anything like permanent?

[32:54] Or you after death you go to heaven and

[32:57] then vanish into zero.

[32:59] Some say there is an eternal reality.

[33:04] And some say there is nothing.

[33:07] So please you and the god of death.

[33:10] You please tell me.

[33:12] What is there?

[33:15] Anything eternal?

[33:17] Or all are mundane? All are changing?

[33:20] That was the third question.

[33:24] I will be learning from you this third

[33:27] boon.

[33:29] This is the greatest and highest

[33:32] expectation from you. So this is my

[33:34] third prayer.

[33:36] And then Nachiketa, this is the test.

[33:39] Everyone should have to go.

[33:42] You ask for money.

[33:45] You ask for name, fame.

[33:47] And God can give you quickly.

[33:50] But you say

[33:51] please reveal your divine nature.

[33:55] Or I want to be

[33:57] knowing who am I.

[34:00] Then your temptation will start coming.

[34:04] Temptations.

[34:06] So what does he

[34:08] say?

[34:09] He was so happy giving extra boon. Now

[34:12] he said, "Hey hey hey, what are you

[34:13] asking for?" They were erupted busy

[34:17] in the pura. In the olden time

[34:19] even the gods

[34:21] were puzzled about asking this question.

[34:24] Gods, goddesses, they are in the heaven.

[34:26] They enjoy everything. They are shaking

[34:29] to put any question about that eternal

[34:32] life, absolute blissfulness, and this

[34:35] mundane changing. You don't put that

[34:37] question. You're too small a boy.

[34:40] Now, he should be given a number of

[34:43] another boon, another another boon.

[34:46] Please, bring this to ask me whatever

[34:49] you like. Mama put it to don't ask this

[34:52] boon.

[34:54] I I can give you gold. I can give you

[34:56] jewelry. I can give you

[34:59] great territory of land.

[35:03] And you cannot imagine when gods cannot

[35:05] have those things. I can give you

[35:07] everything, but don't put this question

[35:09] that what is eternal life after death or

[35:12] is there any life or not.

[35:16] I will give you Satayu. So, you want to

[35:18] live? I will give 100 years

[35:20] lifetime.

[35:22] Or I I can give

[35:24] with you will live with your

[35:26] son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter,

[35:29] and all this wealth and prosperity.

[35:34] Many

[35:36] cows and horses and chariots and

[35:39] whatever you like I will give you. He

[35:41] hosti hiran nam ashwan. Hosti means

[35:45] elephant.

[35:46] Uh he hiran nam is gold.

[35:50] And land is a huge property and landed

[35:54] property. I can give you to all.

[35:57] And if you don't get satisfied, say

[35:59] whatever you want I will give you.

[36:02] And that was the temptation.

[36:09] Those things which cannot be

[36:11] available in the earthly plane.

[36:15] Sarvan kaman. I will I can sanction you

[36:18] free access to all these things what is

[36:21] there available in the mundane world.

[36:23] Imarama.

[36:25] These wonderful ladies, the Saratha with

[36:29] the chariot, with the with all these

[36:31] powerful drivers.

[36:34] In which is impossible to get

[36:36] I will give you as your service.

[36:38] Whatever you want, I'll give you. But

[36:40] mama

[36:42] mama

[36:44] uh

[36:45] What did he say? What

[36:47] did he say? Nachiketa maranam

[36:48] anupasyati. But don't ask me

[36:52] that what is eternal, what is beyond

[36:54] death, and is there any truth like that.

[36:58] And this student was very tough.

[37:02] He said, "Sobhavo martyasya. Sir

[37:08] you are giving me something which is

[37:10] sobhavo, only tomorrow.

[37:13] It has an end.

[37:15] 100 years lifespan, it will end in one

[37:18] day. You give 200 years life day, that

[37:21] will end one day.

[37:23] Sobhavo martah. In this material world,

[37:26] what you are talking about, these are

[37:27] all martah, subject to death. Martah.

[37:31] Sobhavo martyasya jarad anteka

[37:33] sarvendriyanam

[37:35] And you give me 100 year, 200 year, my

[37:37] eyesight will be

[37:39] light, will not look the same way as the

[37:42] youthful. All the sense organs will be

[37:45] jara, will will be uh

[37:47] dysfunctional. No?

[37:50] And api sarvam jivitama, if you say I

[37:53] enjoy the whole world

[37:56] that is alpam. That's nothing, it's

[37:58] alpam. This is limited. Because that is

[38:00] an end.

[38:02] So

[38:04] you don't please don't en- entice me

[38:07] with your singing and dancing and gold

[38:10] and all these things. Please don't tempt

[38:13] me with that. Tabo evaha tabo nistya.

[38:16] You please keep all those singing,

[38:18] dancing, gold uh with you. Please,

[38:20] please. I please give me what I am

[38:23] asking for. See the stubbornness of this

[38:25] student and the sincerity of the is not

[38:28] tempted. That's why the

[38:30] temptations come in spiritual life and

[38:33] very few people can struggle with that

[38:36] and get succumbed into it. And when God

[38:39] comes in the form and give you extra

[38:41] boon whatever you like, who is so

[38:44] powerful to withstand the temptations?

[38:47] That means such a beautiful character.

[38:50] Anyhow,

[38:52] then

[38:53] guru was very happy

[38:55] that

[38:56] uh the he was praising. I never find

[38:59] such a uh student like you, no? Uh they

[39:04] uh

[39:05] getting all these things, one can

[39:07] renounce all these thing and still ask

[39:09] for spiritual wealth and spiritual

[39:12] uh realization.

[39:15] And then then then starts the

[39:18] teaching of the Upanishad.

[39:20] Uh

[39:21] this is and these are the very beautiful

[39:23] verses this Katha Upanishad carries, no?

[39:28] It says that

[39:29] one or two I I can't read I cannot read

[39:32] in

[39:33] uh

[39:34] so in a short time. This is a

[39:37] it will take so long.

[39:39] But what he says,

[39:41] you know, in life bo- see guru teaches

[39:44] here.

[39:46] There are two things

[39:47] it appears in everyone's life.

[39:50] One is called shreya.

[39:52] One is called preya.

[39:54] Shreya means which is ultimate good.

[39:57] Preya means which is immediate good.

[40:00] Immediately a tongue will say good ice

[40:04] cream.

[40:05] Immediately something beautiful I will

[40:07] wow wow wow.

[40:10] Whatever immediately have brings

[40:13] happiness,

[40:15] but at the end it disappears.

[40:19] That is called the prey all.

[40:21] And sure is that what in the beginning

[40:24] it looks

[40:25] not so good.

[40:27] Beginning meditation,

[40:29] beginning getting up in the early

[40:30] morning when the eyes are drowsy.

[40:33] No, I will have to get up and take a

[40:35] shower. No, shower I will take little

[40:38] late after come. No, now.

[40:41] Huh? So, this is not very good.

[40:44] It is sure.

[40:46] Towards the beginning it appears little

[40:49] unpleasant. But putting on me at the

[40:52] end, which is brings absolute peaceful,

[40:56] joyful life. That is the sure. So, these

[41:00] two things come into the life of every

[41:02] human personality.

[41:05] And intelligent people are those who can

[41:09] give up the immediate pleasurable

[41:12] objects

[41:14] and accept that which is harder to reach

[41:17] at the beginning, but which will bring

[41:20] you absolute joy and absolute peace.

[41:23] So, that is the

[41:28] one verse.

[41:33] Avidya mantor vartamane

[41:38] swayam dhira panditam manna manna. The

[41:40] pandit, pandit means scholars. He's

[41:43] describing scholars. Spirituality is not

[41:46] scholarship, but it is

[41:49] those scholars

[41:51] in whose heart the ignorance is the

[41:53] fundamental thing, keeping ignorance in

[41:57] the mind and talking big spiritual

[41:59] talks. Huh?

[42:01] They are

[42:03] fools.

[42:05] And they

[42:08] go into the darkness and their followers

[42:11] they follow them. They also fall into

[42:13] the

[42:14] darkness.

[42:17] But this truth

[42:18] Shravanaya api bahubhi yo na labhyah, we

[42:22] hear this Upanishad how many times?

[42:24] He says you give money guru says

[42:27] you repeatedly hear about this truth

[42:30] that absolute truth, Satchidananda

[42:33] truth. All these are apparent. These are

[42:35] not eternal. It is all all name and form

[42:39] is limitation limitation limitation. 100

[42:43] times we hear Shravanaya api bahubhi.

[42:47] Again and again listening to this yo na

[42:49] labhyah, who cannot be achieved.

[42:51] Shrinvanto api, hearing that

[42:54] you cannot recognize and realize that.

[42:57] You need a ashcharyo vakta.

[43:01] It should come out from the mouth of a

[43:04] spiritual teacher who is unique.

[43:07] Unique means who has realized God, who

[43:09] himself has realization.

[43:11] And when it's given to the kushala

[43:14] anushishta ideal teacher may be there,

[43:16] student should be ideal.

[43:19] A PhD student teacher comes to a grade

[43:22] one child to teach what is called

[43:26] Einstein's theory of

[43:28] relativity.

[43:29] Huh? What will be the combination?

[43:33] Similarly they say no, ideal teacher

[43:36] ideal student will bring the best

[43:38] result. Ashcharyo gyata

[43:42] kushala anushishta. If it is given the

[43:44] right type of lesson

[43:46] and then the knower will know the truth.

[43:50] And Ramakrishna is

[43:52] best example. Ramakrishna and

[43:54] Vivekananda, teacher and student. They

[43:57] met together and clicked immediately.

[44:00] Boom in one second. They have the vision

[44:02] and realization.

[44:04] Ashcharyo vakta.

[44:06] And don't think that you have to study

[44:10] so many books. Ramakrishna said,

[44:13] uh God realization does not need and how

[44:15] many books you have read.

[44:17] But it is

[44:18] Reading is good,

[44:20] but more to be sadhana. So he says,

[44:22] "Naisha tarkena matir apaneya.

[44:27] You, Nachiketa,

[44:29] your buddhi

[44:31] is derived not out of logical conclusion

[44:37] or intellectual debating.

[44:40] Your brain is pure.

[44:45] That's why you are holding on to truth,

[44:48] rejecting all which are mundane.

[44:51] Our spiritual growth does not happen,

[44:53] why?

[44:54] Because our mind does not go to the

[44:56] truth.

[44:58] Mind is attracted to the world.

[45:01] And world is what? Not God to us.

[45:04] World is a point of attraction or

[45:06] rejection.

[45:09] I won't won't say world is all love, all

[45:11] joy,

[45:12] but there is bitterness is also there.

[45:14] Otherwise

[45:16] people will be only in the world.

[45:18] Because there's some bitterness, then

[45:20] they turn back and say, "Ooh, where is

[45:22] some sweetness?"

[45:24] So this is the turning point. So he

[45:27] says, "It But it cannot be achieved by

[45:30] only

[45:31] intellectual debating.

[45:33] But if logicians

[45:35] maybe good logicians, only logic will

[45:38] not give it. But it is only pure heart.

[45:41] So, Nachiketa, you are so great. You

[45:43] have given up everything, and you are

[45:45] asking for the highest truth.

[45:48] Uh

[45:49] But the truth is there in your heart.

[45:53] Tam durdarsham gudham anushtam

[45:56] anupravishtam

[45:58] guhahitam gavarishtam puranam adhyatma

[46:02] yogadhigamena devam matva

[46:10] >> One can conquer

[46:12] joy

[46:14] bereavement

[46:17] by identifying the truth which is within

[46:20] which is very difficult to see. The eyes

[46:22] cannot see. It's a fine mind, pure mind

[46:25] is necessary. Good home.

[46:27] It is embedded into that

[46:30] very depth of it and it is on a previous

[46:32] term.

[46:34] But to all horses duty.

[46:39] And

[46:40] I will suggest in one word. What is

[46:42] that?

[46:43] That all the Vedas which are mentioning

[46:46] the ultimate truth. What is the ultimate

[46:48] truth?

[46:49] Survey Vedas that

[46:52] all men

[46:53] and women

[46:55] that all the Vedas not the ultimate

[46:57] truth.

[46:58] Rigveda, Samaveda,

[47:00] Atharvaveda.

[47:03] Squeeze the Vedas. What is the

[47:04] essential?

[47:07] It is essential. It's called

[47:10] Om.

[47:11] Is the essential truth.

[47:15] People do austerities.

[47:17] People do

[47:19] celibacy practice of celibacy.

[47:23] For what purpose they all this done?

[47:26] Only to realize the truth which is

[47:28] called

[47:32] Superintendents in home.

[47:35] All this realization is home

[47:37] realization.

[47:40] That's the Upanishad deals only with the

[47:42] Om word. A U M and dot. That's all.

[47:47] And Mandukya Karika the commentary

[47:51] is one of the toughest

[47:53] non-dual

[47:56] philosophy.

[47:58] Only Om. Om all the time.

[48:00] Any mantras we start Om.

[48:03] But, Om is not so easy.

[48:05] Here, the guru says that Om is the

[48:08] ultimate truth, which is the all the

[48:11] Vedas, all the scriptures

[48:14] they

[48:15] target at that.

[48:16] All the spiritual seekers are leading a

[48:20] life of celibacy, purity. All the

[48:24] students are

[48:27] doing austerities, all types of that.

[48:30] They all need to reach this Om, truth of

[48:33] the Om.

[48:36] Like that, he says continued. Let me go

[48:39] to some other place.

[48:52] Angushta matro purusha madhya atmani.

[48:55] And that is beautiful. I I I I I I

[48:59] Next chapter when you go the guru is

[49:01] teaching him what is the atman, what is

[49:04] the Om actually, what is that reality.

[49:07] Uh so, he's saying that

[49:09] that this this is that reality.

[49:12] What is inside, what is outside.

[49:15] Jatas chodayati surya.

[49:18] From which the sun comes out.

[49:21] Astam jati yatra gachati. Where the sun

[49:24] sets into that consciousness.

[49:27] Tam deva that lifulgent reality

[49:30] is is pervaded everywhere and that is

[49:33] that.

[49:34] What is here, that is there.

[49:37] And

[49:39] we have to see everywhere the same

[49:41] reality.

[49:47] And see

[49:49] as we are reading in the Svetasvatara

[49:51] Upanishad, here also it says

[49:53] that

[49:54] Hamsa Suchishad this Atman is like a

[49:58] sun.

[49:59] It is going in this in this earth in the

[50:03] whole in the

[50:05] space

[50:06] in in the

[50:07] objects of the world in the earth

[50:10] and the grains and um in the in the

[50:14] rivers in the

[50:16] mountains everywhere that same reality.

[50:20] But

[50:21] hey,

[50:21] that is the question you are asking

[50:23] about Brahman.

[50:29] Mhm.

[50:30] Agnir yatha eka bhuvanam pravishya

[50:35] rupam rupam pratirupo babhuva ekas tatha

[50:38] sarva bhutantaratma

[50:40] rupam rupam pratirupo bahishcha he says

[50:44] as the one Agni the fire

[50:46] Agni being one

[50:48] bhuvanam pravishya entering into the

[50:50] world into the earth

[50:52] its color changes. Mhm, you put some oil

[50:56] in the fire

[50:57] its color is one.

[50:59] You put some

[51:01] food grain, it will be one color. You

[51:03] put some salt in the fire, it will be

[51:06] one color. So

[51:08] that as the color becomes different with

[51:10] fire remaining the same

[51:12] then that's why the rupa or the form you

[51:14] see, these are forms are different but

[51:17] the content is the same.

[51:19] And then the that is the

[51:22] as you say

[51:24] the

[51:25] animal cookies, no?

[51:28] We are all animal cookies.

[51:31] We look different one with the other.

[51:34] But the dough is the same dough.

[51:36] Satchidananda that is made of

[51:38] Satchidananda.

[51:39] That is the Agnir yatha eka ekas tatha

[51:43] that one reality the the truth O

[51:46] Nachiketa you asked me that what is the

[51:48] ultimate truth? Eka ha that is only one.

[51:51] Sarvabhutantaratma,

[51:53] it is in everyone's heart.

[51:55] That's why I said

[51:57] Swami Vivekananda said, "Each soul is

[51:59] potentially divine."

[52:01] Not less, not more. Behind this

[52:04] chandelier,

[52:05] there's same electricity. Behind this,

[52:08] the same electricity. Behind them,

[52:13] air conditioning, the same electricity.

[52:16] Manifestation is different.

[52:18] But inside is the same consciousness.

[52:21] So, that is the

[52:23] theme of the

[52:25] Upanishad. So, Katha Upanishad says that

[52:30] talks and same man as the as the air

[52:33] entering into different space,

[52:36] eh,

[52:36] takes different form.

[52:38] The same Atman

[52:40] taking in different bodies appears

[52:42] different. Nityo nityanam

[52:46] He's the eternal

[52:48] among the non-eternal. This is

[52:50] non-eternal.

[52:52] But there is the eternal behind.

[52:55] Nityo nityanam, chetana

[52:58] eh, chetananam

[53:00] He's the conscious entity behind all

[53:03] consciousness, all our awareness. I am

[53:06] seeing you aware. I am hearing. I am

[53:09] moving. I am touching. I am tasting. But

[53:12] all these sense experiences are

[53:13] happening.

[53:15] But it is behind the consciousness that

[53:17] is the one consciousness.

[53:19] Tam Atmastham, if you can in your real

[53:22] realization, you can think that that

[53:24] that consciousness is in you. Atmastham

[53:28] yonupashyanti, you are an intelligent

[53:30] person. You are dhiraha.

[53:33] And your peace, tesham shanti shashvati,

[53:37] you will get an eternal peace, absolute

[53:40] joy. That is the Atman,

[53:42] that consciousness behind all awareness,

[53:45] that light behind all light, that

[53:48] form behind the

[53:50] behind that one formless whatever the

[53:53] form

[53:54] of name and form that is the one

[53:57] reality. So, that oneness is the

[53:59] teaching of Vedanta what you are asking

[54:03] and knowing that one will conquer death.

[54:09] Any very roughly we have

[54:11] run over the

[54:13] Upanishads main theme. So, you got the

[54:15] three points. First of all, a person

[54:18] should be spirituality is for stable

[54:21] people,

[54:22] not unstable people.

[54:25] He should be well established in life,

[54:27] enjoy the life, understand its futility.

[54:31] Then question will come, "Okay, I'm done

[54:33] with this world, what do I enjoy it can

[54:35] give? Money, wealth, prosperity, food,

[54:38] and dress,

[54:40] house, car. I've

[54:43] I've tried.

[54:45] And now I'm not I'm not satisfied. Then

[54:47] after death, what? The heaven?

[54:50] Yes, you go, do meritorious work, enjoy

[54:53] heaven. And then your mind will be

[54:55] matured there. I have done so many times

[54:58] going back and forth. That does not give

[55:00] me joy. Where? Where? Where? Then you go

[55:02] to your guru. And then guru gives the

[55:04] direction of looking inside and then he

[55:07] says, "Here,

[55:08] my good guru know. Where are you

[55:11] searching me, my dear child? I'm here

[55:13] inside inside and outside. I'm in the

[55:15] earth, I'm in the

[55:16] space, I'm in the water, I'm in the

[55:18] mountain, I'm in the birds, I'm in the

[55:21] animals. I am everywhere, I permeate

[55:23] everywhere. And in you and in outside."

[55:26] That's the last stage. So,

[55:29] nothing

[55:30] we should not criticize anyone because

[55:32] everyone is going to the ultimate goal

[55:34] is that. But But needs the experience of

[55:37] life to go. Uh so no one should look

[55:40] upon others

[55:41] uh

[55:42] lower high but to see that we are all

[55:45] making a

[55:46] common journey to the infinity. Everyone

[55:48] wants joy.

[55:50] Everyone, a thief, a murderer,

[55:53] a serial killer, a lover, a hater,

[55:58] whatever, who is who is trying to make

[56:01] the others life uh

[56:03] many

[56:05] a

[56:07] others life

[56:09] uh

[56:10] totally

[56:12] uh destructive life, no?

[56:15] Or a

[56:16] villain

[56:17] or a killer,

[56:19] same, they're all searching for joy,

[56:21] joy, joy, joy. I'll be happy. I'll be

[56:23] happy. My joy will be better. And this

[56:25] is the obstacle, kill him or destroy

[56:27] him, then I'll be happy.

[56:29] That is such search for happiness,

[56:32] eternal happiness, unchanging happiness.

[56:35] Everyone is searching for that.

[56:37] It should be here or in heaven,

[56:40] but nowhere. Then go back. Beyond Beyond

[56:43] means come back in your heart.

[56:45] And when you go into their heart, then

[56:47] comes out everywhere.

[56:49] One question, temptations arise when one

[56:52] seeks

[56:53] the self. Is this some test of God or

[56:56] blessing?

[56:57] Yes, if the temptation for God comes

[57:00] naturally, it is a blessing.

[57:02] But temptation from the world comes,

[57:04] then we'll have to wait.

[57:06] Temptation of world is also God.

[57:10] But then I do not know who might love in

[57:12] the beautiful blossom flower.

[57:15] I love the flower.

[57:17] Then the flower why not love the flower

[57:18] after 10 days?

[57:21] Someone is hiding behind the beautiful

[57:23] flower.

[57:25] I don't see him. I saw the only name and

[57:28] form.

[57:29] The flower is color and its fragrance or

[57:32] its

[57:33] uh texture. that attracted me.

[57:37] But who is

[57:39] bringing out that beauty, that love,

[57:41] that attraction?

[57:43] Wherever it is, Swami ji said

[57:45] that whenever a friend shaking hand with

[57:49] I see the Lord standing there. A mother

[57:51] kissing the baby

[57:53] with love, there stands God standing

[57:56] there. So, God stands everywhere.

[58:00] >> I have a question. Why do you

[58:02] >> Yes.

[58:02] >> Why do you say each soul is potentially

[58:05] divine instead of

[58:07] inherently divine?

[58:09] >> Well, inherently, potentially means it

[58:11] is there, but it is manifestation.

[58:15] Only we are not manifesting, that's why

[58:17] we are feeling this

[58:19] sadness,

[58:20] incompleteness,

[58:22] imperfection. But who does that we call

[58:25] saint?

[58:26] They are saintly people. They have

[58:28] manifested that divinity, divine

[58:30] qualities are manifested in their

[58:32] action, in their thought, in their

[58:34] movement, in their all

[58:37] all types of

[58:38] gesture and posture even.

[58:42] It is potential because it is covered by

[58:44] my mind.

[58:46] This truth is all the time here, but it

[58:49] is covered by my

[58:50] dark mind,

[58:52] dark misunderstandings,

[58:54] intellect,

[58:56] I, [snorts] ego.

[58:58] So, these are the coverings. If it is

[58:59] not unfolded,

[59:01] that's why

[59:03] Vedanta talks about pancha kosha of five

[59:06] koshas. Anna, the body,

[59:08] prana, the energy body,

[59:10] mano, the mind, intellect,

[59:13] buddhi, and ego.

[59:16] These are the five five layers. The

[59:18] inner truth is covered with the five

[59:20] layers.

[59:21] Peel off, peel off, peel off.

[59:23] That is unfoldment, unfoldment. By how?

[59:27] By meditation, by prayer, by what we are

[59:29] doing, we are trying to

[59:32] think about this again and again.

[59:34] Reading the Upanishad. Or whatever

[59:36] practice makes our mind

[59:38] purer.

[59:42] Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi Harihi Om Tat

[59:47] Sat Sri Ramakrishna

[59:50] Arpanamastu.

[59:52] >> And so tomorrow's class is cancelled.

[59:55] >> Tomorrow is what?

[59:56] >> Um after we done on this class

[59:58] >> After what?

[59:59] >> go there and so we cancelled the class.

[1:00:02] >> Oh, tomorrow class is cancelled. Okay.

[1:00:04] So tomorrow class is cancelled.

[1:00:07] Saturday. Thank you.

[1:00:12] Some question is coming.

Preguntas Frecuentes

The Katha Upanishad is a dialogue between a young boy named Nachiketa and Yama, the god of death, exploring the nature of the eternal self, liberation, and the difference between temporary worldly rewards and ultimate spiritual realization. It begins with the story of Nachiketa questioning his father's false gifts and eventually confronting death itself in search of true knowledge.
Nachiketa was the intelligent son of Vajashrava, who saw that his father was giving away old, dying cows as gifts during a ceremonial ritual, treating them as valuable offerings when they were worthless. When Nachiketa questioned this false charity, his father angrily said he would give his son to Yama, the god of death. Nachiketa took this literally and traveled to Yama's abode, where he eventually became a student of the deepest spiritual truths.
Karma Kanda is the action-based section of the Vedas, teaching ritual, sacrifice, and ethical conduct to earn merit and secure earthly prosperity and heavenly rewards. Jnana Kanda is the wisdom section, of which the Upanishads are the crown, teaching direct knowledge of ultimate reality and liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death. The Katha Upanishad shows why Jnana Kanda is necessary: merit-based rewards eventually run out, and the soul must return to the wheel of suffering.
The Katha Upanishad does not call heaven bad; it calls it temporary. Heaven is described as a reward for good action and merit, offering comfort and youth without end—but only until the merit is exhausted. Then the soul falls back into the world of work and suffering. The Upanishad teaches that true liberation (moksha) lies beyond both heaven and earth, in the permanent recognition of one's eternal nature beyond death.
Om is the sacred syllable that represents and contains Brahman, the ultimate infinite reality. Understanding Om leads to the direct realization that one's true self is identical with Brahman—eternal, unchanging, and beyond death. This recognition is the gateway to moksha, permanent liberation from the cycle of returning to birth and death.
The story establishes the Upanishad's core theme: discrimination between the real and the apparent. Nachiketa's ability to recognize that his father's gifts are false and worthless—not gifts at all—mirrors the discrimination the Upanishad teaches spiritually: the ability to see that worldly rewards are temporary and ultimately unsatisfying. The same intelligence that cuts through pretense in daily life leads to recognition of eternal truth.
Yama offers Nachiketa wealth, long life, power, pleasure, and everything the world desires—all the prizes that Karma Kanda pursues. Nachiketa refuses them because he understands that all worldly rewards are temporary and lead to return and suffering. Instead, he asks for knowledge of what lies beyond death and the nature of Brahman, the eternal self—the only boon that leads to permanent peace.
