Hip and Lower Back Release Using Balls in Yin Yoga

De Caroline Layzell Yoga

Caroline Layzell's 35-minute class, posted to her channel in August 2021, asks students to do something that looks simple and turns out to be quite precise: lie on a couple of tennis balls, let the body sink into them, and wait. The balls work the myofascia, the web of connective tissue wrapped around every muscle, while the yin shapes around them hold the tissue long enough to change. The target is the lower back and the front and back of the hips. The framing is less conventional. Layzell says the sequence works the Urinary Bladder, Kidney, Stomach and Spleen meridian lines, and she ties that work to calming the nervous system and letting go of fear and worry. Whatever you make of the meridian language, the physical logic of the class is worth understanding on its own terms, and it is more interesting than a typical hip-opener.

What is the point of rolling balls under the lower back?

Layzell's central idea is that the body is not a set of separate parts. "We have this web of fascia all the way through the body," she explains in the opening minutes, "wrapped around everything inside of us." That means you do not need to work every tissue group to get an opening. Tap into one area of the leg and you also create space along the front line of the body; work the back and you reach the whole back web.

The lower back is where she puts most of the attention, because of a specific structure. She describes a diamond-shaped sheet of dense fascia, the thoracolumbar fascia, with many muscles attaching into it and many connection points between upper and lower body. When we do not move much, she says, this area "can get really congested and tight." Many hip muscles attach there, which is why she frames the lower back as the place to start if you want the hips to feel free. Her reason for using balls is practical: the layer is thick and dense, and balls are "the easiest way" to mobilize it.

How do you place the balls for lower back release?

The setup is a supine start. The balls go on either side of the spine, not on it. Layzell notes that the spacing changes as you move along the spine: lower down, the vertebrae are wider, so the balls go further apart; higher up, they can come in closer to the center. You can work close to the spine or move out toward the sides of the waist.

Her preferred method is the one she demonstrates herself. Lie on your forearms, place the balls just above the sacrum, on the bony part of the pelvis, and rock gently back and forth. Once things start to release, she moves to side-to-side and then a zigzag. Because the balls shift out of place, you reset them to center as you go. You can move up and down, zigzag, or go side to side, whichever feels right. If you have only one ball, work one side and then switch.

This is where the class asks you to listen rather than perform. Some people find a spot where they can lie still; others need to move. Layzell suggests noticing whether one side feels more congested than the other, a pattern she links to everyday habits like crossing the legs in one direction more often or carrying a bag on one arm. "These little imbalances of how we live our lives tend to get stored in the tissues," she says, "whether we realize it or not."

Why move toward a tight spot instead of away from it?

The most useful instruction in the class arrives early, around the three-minute mark, and it is easy to skip past. She tells students that when they hit a tight spot, the instinct to pull away should be resisted. Instead:

"Anytime you find a tight spot instead of being tempted to move away from the tight spot move towards it release the tension and then move forward." (Layzell, in the class, around 3:00)

That is a small, concrete piece of practice that shapes the rest of the session. Pressure into a restricted area, followed by a pause and a release, is the basic rhythm of the work. She also invites adjustments: move the balls higher, lower, or wider depending on what the body reports. The three breaths she counts at each stage give the release time to happen before you move on.

What happens when the balls go into the front of the hip?

The middle of the class shifts to the front of the body. Layzell brings students into a sphinx-based shape with the elbows roughly under the shoulders and the balls placed just inside the front hip bones, the ASIS. She describes this area as often very tense and says it takes the work into psoas territory. The shape is fiddly to set up, and she is clear that the balls should not stay in place for long.

She also builds in a way out for anyone who is menstruating and finds the pressure too tender. Students can come into sphinx without the balls, and if the arms feel like too much, they can switch to a crocodile position with a pillow of arms under the head. Her instruction is to pay attention to the jaw, keep the buttocks and legs relaxed, and, if the release feels quick or intense, roll slightly forward or back. Blocks under the forearms let you go deeper into the backbend; some students move all the way into seal pose with straight arms.

Can releasing the hips affect fear and worry?

This is the claim that makes the class distinct, and it is worth reading carefully. In the description, the class is said to "help to release the emotions of fear and worry" through its focus on the Urinary Bladder, Kidney, Stomach and Spleen meridians. In the practice itself, Layzell says the front-body work stimulates the kidney and stomach meridian lines, "both of which are linked into our our fears and worries." She then describes the result she hopes for:

"When we let go of fear and worry we come to this place of calmness, presence, the ability to be in the moment without looking back or racing forward." (Layzell, in the class, around 9:06)

The meridian framework comes from traditional Chinese medicine, and it is a different lens from the anatomical language she uses for fascia. The class does not argue for it. It offers it as a way to organize the experience, and students can take the physical part, slow tissue work plus breath, without adopting the framework. What the video does show clearly is that the pacing is designed to lower arousal: long holds, repeated breath counts, and time in stillness at the end.

What does the class ask of the nervous system?

The back half of the session moves to the belly and the spine. Students lower onto the front, rest the head on the arms or the side, and shake the hips gently to release the lower back. Later, Layzell speaks directly to the nervous system. In a passage about reactions and the sense of safety, she reminds students that the body can settle even when a shape feels challenging, and she asks them to slow down rather than push. That is the through-line of the whole hour: enough load to change tissue, enough patience to let the system register that it is safe.

For a viewer, the practical takeaway is that the work is repeatable and low-tech. Two balls, a mat, a cushion and a couple of blocks are the entire kit. The class is labeled Myo-Yin in its title, and that name describes exactly what happens here: a yin structure, long and passive, with myofascial tools doing the tissue work underneath.

Where to go from here

If you want to try this class, start with the lower back section before you attempt the sphinx work. Set the balls just above the sacrum, use forearms for support, and keep the first few sessions short. Notice which side feels more congested and return to that side on another day rather than forcing it. Pay attention to the breath counts and let them be the timing, not your effort.

If the meridian framing interests you, treat it as a starting question rather than a conclusion. Layzell's own material on her channel and in her descriptions covers more of her approach to anatomy and nervous system well-being. Watching the full 35-minute session once through without moving, then returning to it with the balls, is a good way to see how the instructions build on each other.

Above all, take Layzell's instruction literally: move toward the tight spot, release, then move on. That single habit does more of the work than any particular shape.

[0:00] things that you'll need will be your

[0:02] cushion uh two blocks and uh one ball or

[0:05] two balls if you have them and we're

[0:07] going to focus primarily on the front of

[0:09] the hip and getting into the lower back

[0:12] as a main focus and it should in getting

[0:14] into those few areas feel like it's

[0:16] opening up um a lot of areas that are

[0:19] quite tense in the body generally when

[0:21] we work with the tennis balls what

[0:22] happens is we have this web of fascia

[0:24] all the way through the body it's

[0:25] wrapped around everything inside of us

[0:27] so when we tap into one area of the leg

[0:30] for example just by working this area

[0:33] we're also going to create space along

[0:34] the front line of the body same thing on

[0:36] the back of the body it's going to tap

[0:37] into the whole web of tissue along the

[0:39] back of the body so it does it means

[0:41] that we don't have to work the entire

[0:43] skeleton and tissue groups um to get the

[0:46] benefit of opening but in our lower back

[0:48] we have this diamond shape of fascia

[0:51] okay and it's called the thorul lumber

[0:53] fascia and lots of muscles connect into

[0:56] it lots of connection points between

[0:58] upper and lower body and when we don't

[1:00] move move that often this area can get

[1:02] really congested and tight so what I

[1:04] want us to do with the knowledge that

[1:06] lots of our hip muscles attach into this

[1:09] area is mobilize it okay so it's a very

[1:12] thick dense layer of fascia so the balls

[1:14] are the easiest way for us to do that so

[1:16] I'm going to get you in a moment to lie

[1:18] down and what we're going to have is the

[1:20] balls placed along either side of the

[1:23] vertebrae of our spine so this is the

[1:25] center of the spine further down the

[1:28] spine they get wider okay the vertebrae

[1:30] so we'll need to take the balls a little

[1:32] wider apart and then further up they can

[1:34] come in closer to the center of the body

[1:36] we can work in close to the spine or we

[1:38] can come all the way out to the side of

[1:40] the waist now my preferred way of

[1:43] massaging

[1:44] this is to lie down on my

[1:48] forearms and place the balls

[1:51] underneath or just above my sacrum okay

[1:54] so just above the ilum the Bony part of

[1:56] your sacrum there and then I'm just

[1:58] going to massage on my for arms back and

[2:01] forth the lower back area and then once

[2:04] that starts to release I like to go side

[2:07] to side and zigzag now the balls move

[2:09] out of the way so you have to place them

[2:11] back into Center again so you can go up

[2:13] and down you can zigzag a little bit up

[2:15] and down or just go side to side

[2:17] whatever it is that feels good once you

[2:19] get started but let's just come down

[2:22] onto our our back come onto our forearms

[2:25] grab a ball if you've only got one ball

[2:28] you'll just work with one side at a time

[2:30] and then move to the other okay and then

[2:33] lift the bottom from the ground it's a

[2:36] little more active than some of the

[2:37] shapes but everything else is going to

[2:39] be very passive and just slowly roll

[2:42] yourself back and forth now some of you

[2:45] might actually find a spot where you can

[2:46] just lie in Stillness in which case lie

[2:50] down and just notice how this

[2:54] feels notice if one side feels a little

[2:57] more congested or tight than the other

[3:00] which which is often the case when we

[3:02] tend to cross our legs in One Direction

[3:04] More than the other or carry our bags on

[3:07] one arm more than the

[3:09] other these little imbalances of how we

[3:11] live our lives tend to get stored in the

[3:13] tissues whether we realize it or

[3:19] not and anytime you find a tight spot

[3:22] instead of being tempted to move away

[3:24] from the tight spot move towards

[3:28] it release the tension and then move

[3:32] forward okay so some of you might feel

[3:36] like you can move the balls a little

[3:38] higher up which if that's the case go

[3:40] ahead and do some of you might feel like

[3:43] you can go a little further

[3:45] down some of you might want to take the

[3:47] balls

[3:49] wider just notice how that

[3:53] feels three more breaths

[4:00] now when the third breath is complete

[4:03] you're just going to lift yourself up

[4:05] away from the balls lie your back down

[4:08] and then lie down onto the back of the

[4:11] body up to you whether you come into

[4:14] chiasa with the legs or maybe take the

[4:16] feet wide rest the knees against each

[4:18] other some of you might want to massage

[4:21] the spine so you can hug the knees into

[4:23] your chest and roll a little side to

[4:25] side or maybe your windshield wipe the

[4:27] knees side to side

[4:30] maybe it'll feel good just to be still

[4:33] so Follow Your Instinct

[4:38] there using the breath as a single Focus

[4:41] for the

[4:43] Mind two more breaths

[4:56] here when the second breath is complete

[4:59] just bring a Bend into the knees if you

[5:02] need to feet to the floor roll yourself

[5:05] to the left side of your body and then

[5:08] slowly lift yourself up to a comfortable

[5:11] seat take your time so we work our way

[5:14] down to kind of the Seas area so I'm

[5:18] going to show you the shape and then I'm

[5:20] going to show you what we're doing with

[5:21] the balls

[5:23] and the shape is Sphinx pose okay so

[5:28] elbows roughly underneath our shoulders

[5:31] here and you're going to take the

[5:35] balls if you can find your twoo sticky

[5:37] out bones here on the front of your hip

[5:39] those are your Asis you're going to take

[5:41] the balls just to the inside of there

[5:44] okay so it can be a really tense area I

[5:46] talked about it earlier so we're going

[5:48] to place the balls in there and then

[5:50] we're going to rest down onto them okay

[5:52] so it's going to look a little like this

[5:54] and it's a little fiddly to get into so

[5:56] you'll Place one ball in there another

[6:00] ball on the other side and you're going

[6:03] to be in Sphinx now we're not going to

[6:05] hold the balls there for long okay not

[6:08] going to hold the balls there for long

[6:09] and if you are on your cycle right now

[6:13] and this is a little too tender just

[6:15] come into Spinx without the balls okay

[6:17] check it out and see what feels good

[6:20] chest is Reaching Forward and let the

[6:23] Gaze just be down you can support the

[6:26] head with blocks if you want to but

[6:27] we're going to set ourselves up for the

[6:29] shape properly in a

[6:32] moment legs are relaxed make sure the

[6:34] buttocks are relaxed as

[6:38] well and this takes us into soas

[6:43] territory make sure the jaw stays

[6:45] relaxed tongue away from the roof of the

[6:49] mouth some of you might just gently Rock

[6:51] a little from side to side if that feels

[6:55] good some of you might feel like there's

[6:58] quite a quick release where the balls

[7:01] are so feel free to roll yourself a

[7:03] little further forward or back as you

[7:06] need

[7:07] to and if it's too much for you to be in

[7:10] Sphinx with your arms come into

[7:12] crocodile make a pillow with your arms

[7:14] instead for the head to rest on and that

[7:16] might be sufficient in terms of where

[7:19] we're working with the

[7:20] balls okay so choice is

[7:25] yours three more breaths with the

[7:28] ball three more breaths

[7:39] breaths and now when the three breaths

[7:42] are finished just release one hand to

[7:45] release one ball release the other hand

[7:48] to release the balls and then choice is

[7:50] yours whether you stay in Sphinx pose

[7:53] here or some of you might then take a

[7:55] block under each forearm enabling you to

[7:58] come a little deeper into your back bend

[8:02] and some of you might come all the way

[8:04] into seal pose on your hands with

[8:07] straight arms okay but wherever you are

[8:10] I want you to stay relaxed through the

[8:12] belly relax through the legs relax

[8:15] through the heart relaxed around the jaw

[8:18] and the

[8:23] neck slow things down

[8:41] if it feels manageable for you here the

[8:44] final minute if you want to straighten

[8:46] your arms for seal pose feel free to do

[8:50] that notice how it feels to breathe in

[8:53] through the whole of the front body so

[8:54] we're stimulating kidney Cher and

[8:57] stomach meridian line

[9:00] both of which are linked into our our

[9:01] fears and worries and when we let go of

[9:04] fear and worry we come to this place of

[9:06] of calmness

[9:09] presence the ability to be in the moment

[9:12] without looking back or racing forward

[9:15] three more

[9:22] breaths one the third breath for you is

[9:24] complete just moving any blocks or balls

[9:27] out of the way and then lowering down

[9:30] onto your belly either making a pillow

[9:33] with your arms at the top of the mat for

[9:35] the head to rest on or bringing the arms

[9:37] alongside the body so that you can rest

[9:39] on one side of your head and I want you

[9:42] to just shake the hips a little from

[9:44] side to side here little bit of

[9:49] release through the lower

[9:53] back jaw and neck nice and relaxed

[10:04] two more breaths just in Stillness

[10:09] now and then when those two breaths are

[10:12] finished just slowly bring the hands

[10:14] next to the chest push the ground away

[10:17] as you come up to almost a tabletop

[10:19] position and then just bring the bottom

[10:21] to the ground carry the legs out ahead

[10:24] of you here and you'll want to grab each

[10:27] of your balls and have your cushion and

[10:30] your blocks handy now Within Reach okay

[10:34] have them within

[10:35] reach and we're going to turn our

[10:37] attention just briefly to the back of

[10:40] the body now okay so we have these big

[10:42] juicy muscles that we call the

[10:44] hamstrings running down the back of the

[10:45] leg we're going to be placing the ball

[10:47] right into the center the belly of of

[10:50] the bigger muscle here and it's going to

[10:52] look a little bit like this

[10:54] so we'll bring them up close towards the

[10:57] butttocks to begin with we'll rest the

[11:00] weight of the legs onto them and you can

[11:02] take them in the center or if you feel

[11:03] like you need to move them out to the

[11:05] side or in a bit you can and what we're

[11:07] going to do is sit tall and then just

[11:10] lazily curl your way forward now

[11:12] probably you won't go as far forward

[11:14] with the balls there okay so acknowledge

[11:16] that and then grab your blocks either

[11:20] side of the legs and perhaps you'll want

[11:22] to place a cushion on top and then rest

[11:25] your arms onto the cushion some of you

[11:28] might be a bit higher still so the

[11:30] cushion can rest between your feet and

[11:32] then you can just rest your head into

[11:34] the cushion your arms onto the block

[11:37] okay so go ahead and see what that feels

[11:41] like and I want you to know it's it's

[11:44] just going to be a short hold with the

[11:46] ball here and we're going to move the

[11:49] ball two more times so even if it feels

[11:52] a little uncomfortable stay with it

[11:54] unless of course it's

[11:57] painful and just notice how it

[12:01] feels through the back of the

[12:05] body remember what I said about the

[12:07] fascia being connected all the way

[12:10] through the back line of the body so

[12:11] when we tap into these little trigger

[12:13] points in the

[12:14] legs we're releasing all the way from

[12:17] the sole of the foot up through to the

[12:20] back of the

[12:22] neck stimulating urinary bladder

[12:26] Chi which is linked into our

[12:30] our nervous system Health our hormonal

[12:33] Health our sense of balance

[12:41] internally two more breaths and then

[12:43] you'll just very slowly move the balls

[12:46] an inch or so down the

[12:49] leg setting yourself up again as you

[12:52] come into that fold noticing if you need

[12:54] your support in the same way or not

[12:57] knowing you can adjust block

[13:01] and cushions closer to your body further

[13:04] away different

[13:08] heights just seeing how this feels for

[13:11] you

[13:21] today notice how it feels in this

[13:25] position might feel lighter might feel

[13:28] more intense

[13:33] breathing into the areas that are

[13:35] causing you any Focus or

[13:39] discomfort noticing where you can soften

[13:42] where you can

[13:45] relax two more breaths with the ball

[13:48] where it is and then you'll very slowly

[13:50] move the balls just a little further

[13:52] down once again and again just notice if

[13:57] the props are serving you in the right

[13:59] way once you make these little

[14:00] adjustments you might sit up higher you

[14:02] might need to go further into the

[14:09] fold breath stay slow and relaxed

[14:32] two more breaths with the

[14:39] B when you finish the two breaths just

[14:42] release the balls completely to the side

[14:45] and one final minute folding forward

[14:48] here so you might readjust your blocks

[14:51] you might find a little more depth in

[14:53] your fold you might need to sit higher

[14:55] however you need to

[14:57] be and then settle into still

[15:00] NES soon as you're able

[15:04] to feeling the full benefit of the work

[15:07] that we've just been doing now in this

[15:09] final minute here

[15:46] three more

[15:56] breaths when the third breath is

[15:58] complete just slowly start to roll

[16:01] yourself up away from your position

[16:04] place your props to the

[16:08] side catch your balls and just slowly

[16:11] lie yourself down onto your backs just

[16:14] for a moment we're going to be here for

[16:16] five breaths and just as if you were in

[16:18] chestna let the whole of the back line

[16:20] of the body melt down to the

[16:23] ground and just notice how that feels

[16:31] notice how there are feelings of ease of

[16:36] release maybe even a little warmth or

[16:39] tingling in certain parts of the leg or

[16:41] lower back maybe even all the way up to

[16:43] the

[16:47] neck one more

[16:52] breath and then just gently bend your

[16:55] knees roll to your side and just lift

[16:58] yourself comfortably up to a seat here

[17:02] don't get too too fixed in your position

[17:05] just take your time to come upright so

[17:07] that you can see what's going on so this

[17:09] is going to be similar to where we were

[17:11] before but at the same time different so

[17:13] one ball only no props and my starting

[17:19] position again is Sphinx but we're not

[17:21] going to necessarily stay there now on

[17:23] the front of the leg if I show you on

[17:25] the side we have the quads okay so four

[17:28] muscles four headed muscle four muscles

[17:30] that combine into a tendon that attaches

[17:32] into either side of the knee here and

[17:35] we're going to place the balls working

[17:37] our way down the thigh so starting up

[17:39] close to the groin here and it's going

[17:42] to look a bit like this and I'm going to

[17:44] do one leg at a time because it's pretty

[17:46] intense for for myself anyway for most

[17:50] of us and it's going to make the hips

[17:52] feel a little off center okay so I like

[17:55] to be in Sphinx but you could just as

[17:56] easily be lying down like this so you'll

[17:59] shoes and then what you're going to

[18:01] do is bend the knee heel to bottom and

[18:06] just straighten the leg and lifting

[18:08] really slowly it's definitely not fast

[18:11] and another option is instead of bending

[18:13] the knee and straightening the leg is

[18:15] just taking the leg or the foot from

[18:18] left to right a little bit like a

[18:20] steering device on a boat okay so choice

[18:24] is yours and remember as I said you can

[18:26] be lying with your head on the ground if

[18:29] the lower back feels like that's too

[18:31] much so go ahead and place the ball

[18:34] under the front of one of your hips your

[18:36] choice where you're

[18:39] starting come up close to the top of the

[18:45] leg and just notice how that feels

[18:48] bending the knee straightening the

[18:51] leg maybe taking the leg from left to

[18:55] right using the foot to steer

[19:00] and as you feel release happening in the

[19:03] leg feel free to adjust the ball to a

[19:06] new spot along the leg even before I

[19:10] offer it so if that feels good and

[19:12] necessary for you go ahead and do

[19:14] that let the toes stay relaxed the

[19:17] tongue is relaxed and there are

[19:19] definitely going to be places that feel

[19:21] like they are testing your ability to

[19:24] stay calm and

[19:25] relaxed and remember what I said before

[19:28] don't move away from those areas move

[19:30] towards

[19:34] them now let's move the ball a little

[19:36] further down if you didn't already and

[19:39] choose the position that suits you best

[19:41] for your

[19:44] body final minute

[19:47] here and whether you have been running

[19:50] or cycling and using this muscle a lot

[19:53] or whether you have been sitting down

[19:55] and this muscle has got tight from

[19:57] sitting down

[19:59] it's going to feel really really

[20:01] valuable to work

[20:05] into three more

[20:19] breaths and when the third breath is

[20:21] complete just slowly release the ball

[20:25] lower the right leg down or the left if

[20:28] you were working with it and just pause

[20:29] for a moment notice the difference in

[20:31] sensation between the two legs the one

[20:34] that you've worked and the one that you

[20:38] haven't usually it feels quite different

[20:40] in my body and then when you've noticed

[20:43] the differences of where you've been

[20:45] working into slowly place the ball onto

[20:47] the second side the side that you

[20:49] haven't worked yet and bring it up

[20:51] towards the top of the leg and we start

[20:54] from the beginning again now on the

[20:55] second side finding the position with

[20:57] our arms and upper body that suits

[21:00] s and then bending the knee

[21:02] straightening the

[21:04] leg relaxing outer hip muscles where we

[21:10] can relaxing the

[21:15] jaw and just taking time this is a

[21:19] really tight part of the body for you

[21:21] and for some of us it really will

[21:25] be let your breath slow down let the

[21:28] breath help you to tell the nervous

[21:30] system you're okay the brain that you're

[21:34] okay our muscle tone is governed by the

[21:37] nervous system not by how much we

[21:41] stretch so when we take time to settle

[21:44] the nervous

[21:46] system we're going to ultimately find

[21:48] more space in the body more ease within

[21:51] the tissues and the

[21:55] muscles so a lot of this

[21:59] links into our state of mind so know

[22:02] that you can choose your

[22:06] reactions slow down the

[22:08] breath choose to stay calm grounded know

[22:11] that these Sensations are

[22:13] temporary and then as in when you feel

[22:15] space arriving in let's move the ball a

[22:18] little further

[22:20] down and notice how that

[22:25] feels be aware that it might feel

[22:28] entirely different from side to

[22:31] side often we have a a stronger side

[22:34] that we use more than the

[22:38] other and sometimes that shows itself

[22:48] up relax the

[22:51] jaw relax the

[22:54] tongue the fingers the toes

[23:05] notice how you're doing in the mind and

[23:07] the

[23:08] body three more breaths

[23:22] here and when the third breath is

[23:24] complete just pause release the ball lie

[23:28] yourself down onto your belly make a

[23:31] pillow with your arms or rest on one

[23:33] side of the head arms alongside the body

[23:35] and just be

[23:38] still notice how that

[23:52] feels when you finish the breath that

[23:54] you're working with bring the hands next

[23:57] to the chest push the ground away and

[23:59] just lift yourself up to sit on your

[24:01] shins for a

[24:03] moment

[24:05] okay now just place the ball nearby the

[24:08] top of the mat so that you can easily

[24:09] reach it cushion to the side we won't

[24:12] need the cushion and you're going to

[24:14] take your blocks onto the third height

[24:17] okay we're going to come into up dragon

[24:20] together so I'm going to take my right

[24:23] leg

[24:25] forward left leg back okay and we're St

[24:28] starting high from the ground here with

[24:31] the blocks quite close into our body now

[24:34] you've got the option with the ball to

[24:36] place it under your right foot so that

[24:39] you're massaging into the back line of

[24:41] the tissues of the body here as well and

[24:43] if that's too much because it's enough

[24:45] through the front of the left hip remove

[24:47] the ball okay so choice is yours so

[24:49] we're going to start high for the first

[24:51] minute and then I'll work us further

[24:53] down so blocks next to the hips sitting

[24:57] tall

[24:59] and as you feel the fascia through the

[25:01] front of the left hip working and that's

[25:04] possibly the side you've just been

[25:05] working in you might feel like you can

[25:07] go a little further down so in which

[25:09] case you'll turn the blocks down a

[25:11] height but I want the chest to kind of

[25:13] still be almost leaning forward so we're

[25:16] Awakening front body

[25:18] here and yet by using the ball under the

[25:21] right foot we're Awakening through the

[25:23] back of the body so we're working into

[25:26] stomach meridian line but also

[25:29] stimulating kidney and urinary bladder

[25:31] so balancing out our hormones balancing

[25:34] out our

[25:35] energy releasing our fear releasing our

[25:40] worries creating physical space in the

[25:43] front of the body an area that gets

[25:45] tight from all of the sitting that we

[25:49] do three more breaths

[25:55] here now some of you might stay upright

[25:58] some of you will lean forward release

[26:00] the ball move the right foot out a

[26:03] little to the edge and now take your

[26:04] blocks forward on the inside of your leg

[26:08] and potentially as you lean forward you

[26:11] might come on to forearms on your blocks

[26:14] some of you might roll onto the outside

[26:16] edge of right foot here okay knee

[26:19] drawing out and some of you might even

[26:22] place your blocks down on the first

[26:25] height and take your cushion to rest on

[26:28] top and lower all the way down to the

[26:31] cushion okay stranger things have

[26:33] happened so keep an open mind about what

[26:36] space you might have remember nothing is

[26:39] forced

[26:40] here and some of us may stay on our

[26:43] hands which is valid as

[26:50] well slow down the breath

[27:02] and notice where you're feeling

[27:05] sensation and how you're

[27:09] feeling fingers

[27:12] relaxed jaw relaxed tongue relaxed

[27:33] three more breaths

[27:44] here now when you finish the third

[27:47] breath just slowly work your way back up

[27:51] to your

[27:52] hands draw your left hip back and step

[27:56] the right leg back next to the left and

[27:58] just lower down into child's pose and

[28:00] what you can do is rest a ball under the

[28:03] center of your forehead arms reaching

[28:06] towards your toes or just rest the

[28:08] forehead to the

[28:12] ground if you've got the ball there some

[28:14] of you might massage from side to side

[28:17] through the forehead or little circles

[28:19] around the center of the

[28:21] forehead and again some of you might

[28:23] just have the head on the ground here

[28:31] three more breaths

[28:38] here and then when the third breath is

[28:42] finished just

[28:43] slowly lift the head walk the fingers

[28:47] forwards and let's use the hands to push

[28:49] the ground away we're going to make our

[28:51] way to the second side now so bringing

[28:53] the blocks onto the third height here

[28:57] and this time remember left leg comes

[28:58] forward so adjust your right leg back

[29:01] cushioning for the knee if you need it

[29:02] on this side blocks in close to your

[29:05] body and ball is optional remember to

[29:08] place under left

[29:12] foot pushing down into the blocks The

[29:15] Heart Is Lifting forward the ball is

[29:17] kind of under the arch of your foot here

[29:19] if you're using it and just let the

[29:22] tissues around the front of right hip

[29:24] start to soften and

[29:26] melt as you find space arriving in just

[29:29] turning the

[29:31] blocks down a little if you need

[29:36] to relax the

[29:39] belly causes us lots of problems in the

[29:42] pelvic floor and lower back area when

[29:44] it's constantly

[29:47] engaged three more breaths

[29:54] here and when the third breath is

[29:57] complete just leaning forward releasing

[29:59] the ball moving the left foot over a

[30:02] little to the side of the mat and then

[30:04] blocks come now forward and to the

[30:07] inside of left foot and some of us are

[30:10] going to come forward onto

[30:12] forearms some of us are going to come

[30:14] onto the outside of left foot knee

[30:16] drawing

[30:19] out and some of us will stay on hands

[30:22] some of us will make a

[30:24] little pillow resting on top of blocks

[30:28] on the first height for our body to rest

[30:30] on

[30:32] to and some of us that won't be part of

[30:34] the practice today so really tune in

[30:36] what is it that your body

[30:39] needs and know that this is a a process

[30:42] of unraveling a process of unfolding and

[30:45] our only job is to surrender to the

[30:48] space that the body allows us without

[30:50] forcing

[31:00] let the fingers be relaxed make sure

[31:02] there's no White

[31:04] Knuckles no gripping around the

[31:08] jaw tongue away from the roof of the

[31:13] mouth belly is soft and relaxed breath

[31:16] is guiding down deep lungs expanding as

[31:21] we breathe

[31:23] in effort and tension melting away as we

[31:26] breathe out

[31:35] three more

[31:43] breaths when the third breath is

[31:45] complete let's slowly lower left foot to

[31:49] the ground make our way up to our hands

[31:51] draw the right hip back above the knee

[31:54] and then step left foot back coming down

[31:57] into child's pose option remember to

[32:01] place the ball under the center of your

[32:03] forehead fingers towards toes unless

[32:06] that doesn't feel good for you fingers

[32:08] forwards if you

[32:10] need forehead to the ground or resting

[32:13] on a ball and if you have the ball you

[32:15] can be still or just rolling side to

[32:18] side

[32:19] massaging through the tissues here

[32:35] Last Breath

[32:38] here just gently lifting your head away

[32:41] from the ball or ground and coming up to

[32:44] a seed and then just bring the feet to

[32:47] the ground bottom to the ground and just

[32:49] move yourself forward now move the

[32:52] blocks to the

[32:53] side setting ourselves up for chiasa so

[32:56] we're going to grab our bolster so

[32:58] behind our

[33:01] knees everything else out of the way

[33:03] here and then just lie yourself down

[33:06] onto your

[33:09] back scooping the butttocks under a

[33:11] little finding a little length in the

[33:13] lower back cushion helping to support

[33:15] that arms out

[33:18] wide closing your eyes as you surrender

[33:21] into this place of Stillness here taking

[33:26] up as much space as your body needs

[33:29] shoulders relaxing down back line of the

[33:32] body melting into the

[33:34] Earth closing our eyes when we feel

[33:38] ready as we bring oursel into this place

[33:41] of Stillness calmness and simply

[33:45] surrendering to the the act of being

[34:23] bringing just the smallest little

[34:25] movements and wiggles to the fingers in

[34:27] the top

[34:30] toes beginning to reach the arms all the

[34:33] way up overhead full body

[34:38] stretch and from here drawing the knees

[34:40] in towards your chest giving them a hug

[34:43] and then gently rolling over to

[34:45] whichever side feels best for you

[34:48] today keeping your eyes closed as you

[34:51] use your hands to push the ground away

[34:53] lifting you up to a comfortable

[34:56] seat just just noticing how the body

[35:00] feels broader taller more spacious more

[35:05] free let's bring our hands to Heart

[35:10] Center bowing our head to our hands in

[35:12] gratitude for the spaciousness in

[35:15] gratitude for our health in gratitude

[35:17] for the practice today namaste

Lie on your forearms with two balls placed on either side of the spine, just above the sacrum, and rock gently back and forth. Layzell suggests moving the balls wider lower down the spine and closer in higher up, then trying side-to-side or zigzag motions once the area begins to release. Use three breaths at each stage and stay relaxed.
Layzell describes the thoracolumbar fascia as a diamond-shaped, thick, dense layer in the lower back with many muscles attaching into it. Many hip muscles connect there, so when it becomes congested and tight from little movement, it can limit the hips. Balls are her preferred tool for mobilizing it.
In this class, Layzell combines traditional yin shapes with myofascial release using balls, which is what the title's Myo-Yin label describes. The shapes are held passively and long, while the balls work the connective tissue underneath. The video does not offer a wider definition of the term beyond this session.
Layzell lists a cushion, two blocks, and one or two balls, usually tennis balls. Blocks support the head in sphinx or the forearms in deeper backbends, and the cushion sits under the hips for the seated and supine shapes. Nothing else is required.
Layzell's class is framed around the Urinary Bladder, Kidney, Stomach and Spleen meridians, which she says are linked to fear and worry. She describes the goal as reaching calmness and presence, but the meridian connection is a traditional framework rather than a established physical mechanism. Students can use the slow, breath-paced work for calm without accepting that framework.
Layzell explicitly says to come into sphinx pose without the balls if the area feels too tender, especially on your cycle. You can keep the shape and breath, and skip the ball placement at the front of the hip. Notice what feels good and adjust freely.
Layzell counts three breaths at most stages, with the balls in place for only a short time at the front hip, which she says should not be held long. Longer holds appear in the passive shapes where you rest without the balls. Let the breath set the pace rather than a fixed clock.
