What is Anusara Yoga?

Anusara Yoga is a modern school of hatha yoga that integrates biomechanically precise alignment principles with a life-affirming Tantric philosophy rooted in Kashmir Shaivism. Founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara—meaning “flowing with grace” or “following the heart” in Sanskrit—emphasizes the intrinsic goodness of all beings and teaches practitioners to align with the expansive flow of universal consciousness (spanda) through asana practice. The system is characterized by its Universal Principles of Alignment™, a set of biomechanical guidelines designed to optimize safety, stability, and energetic opening in poses, particularly heart-opening backbends.

Origins & Lineage

Anusara Yoga emerged in The Woodlands, Texas in 1997 when John Friend, a longtime student of B.K.S. Iyengar, synthesized his Iyengar Yoga training with Tantric philosophy drawn from his studies with Gurumayi Chidvilasananda of Siddha Yoga and the teachings of Kashmir Shaivism scholar Paul Muller-Ortega. Friend developed the Universal Principles of Alignment as a streamlined evolution of Iyengar’s detailed alignment instructions, organized around five core principles: Opening to Grace, Muscular Energy, Inner Spiral, Outer Spiral, and Organic Energy.

The school grew rapidly through the 2000s, attracting thousands of certified teachers and establishing itself as one of the largest yoga systems in North America. However, in 2012, Friend resigned amid financial and ethical controversies, leading to organizational restructuring. The Anusara School of Hatha Yoga was re-established in 2012 under new leadership, with emphasis shifted from a single founder to a collective teacher-governed model. Today, the system continues through both the reconstituted Anusara School and numerous teachers who trained in the method.

How It’s Practiced

Anusara Yoga classes typically open with an invocation—often chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” or similar Sanskrit mantras—followed by a philosophical theme (dharma talk) that weaves through the physical practice. Teachers introduce the class theme, drawn from Tantric texts like the Pratyabhijnahrdayam or Shiva Sutras, then guide students through a flowing sequence of asanas that embody the philosophical principle.

The Universal Principles of Alignment structure each pose:

  • Opening to Grace: Softening, breathing, and setting intention
  • Muscular Energy: Drawing from periphery to core for stability
  • Inner Spiral: Rotating the legs inward and apart
  • Outer Spiral: Rotating the legs outward, engaging the lower belly
  • Organic Energy: Expanding from core to periphery

Classes emphasize heart-opening poses—urdhva dhanurasana (wheel), ustrasana (camel), kapotasana (pigeon)—executed with precise attention to spinal curves, shoulder-loop actions, and pelvic positioning. The atmosphere tends toward celebration rather than austerity, with teachers frequently offering affirming language and modifications for different body types.

Anusara Yoga Today

Seekers encounter Anusara Yoga through certified teachers affiliated with the Anusara School of Hatha Yoga, which offers Immersion and Teacher Training programs globally. Many studios offer Anusara-inspired or Anusara-influenced classes, taught by instructors trained in the method who may or may not maintain formal affiliation. Annual gatherings, regional workshops, and online platforms connect practitioners with senior teachers.

The 2012 controversies reshaped the landscape significantly: some teachers departed to develop independent methodologies (Bowspring, for example), while others remained committed to preserving and evolving the alignment principles within a reformed organizational structure. Today’s Anusara community is smaller but more teacher-led and ethically transparent.

Common Misconceptions

Anusara Yoga is not synonymous with “feel-good” yoga devoid of rigor. While its language emphasizes positivity and heart-opening, the alignment principles demand precise biomechanical engagement—particularly in intermediate and advanced poses. It is not simply Iyengar Yoga with Tantric philosophy added; the Universal Principles represent a distinct systematization, prioritizing energetic flow over static holding.

Anusara is also not a devotional bhakti tradition, despite its invocations and philosophical themes. The Tantra it references is non-dual Kashmir Shaivism, which views the material world as divine manifestation rather than illusion—distinct from dualistic Tantric schools or Vedantic traditions. Finally, Anusara Yoga meaning is not merely about physical alignment; the philosophical framework is integral, distinguishing it from purely biomechanical approaches.

How to Begin

Prospective students seeking what is Anusara Yoga should locate an Anusara-certified teacher through the Anusara School directory. Beginners benefit from classes explicitly labeled “Anusara for beginners” or “Anusara fundamentals,” where the Universal Principles are methodically introduced. John Friend’s early instructional materials, particularly the “Anusara Yoga Teacher Training Manual,” remain comprehensive references, though the contemporary school has updated curricula.

Reading Douglas Brooks’ translations and commentaries on Tantric texts provides philosophical context, while “Anusara Yoga: The Philosophy and Practice” (various contributors) offers accessible entry points. Attending an Immersion—a 100-hour intensive exploring alignment and philosophy—is the traditional pathway for serious students. For those exploring Anusara yoga for beginners remotely, many certified teachers offer online classes integrating alignment cues with Tantric teachings.
