The Medicine of One Note: A Silence-First Meditation Practice

Moshe Halperin's one-note meditation series starts from an unusually small premise: one sustained tone, held inside two stretches of silence, with a prayer threaded through the whole sitting. In a minute and forty-eight seconds, the introduction video lays out the frame for the series, which he describes as a short introduction to meditation built around "a single note, and the space either side of it." There is no lecture, no technique list, and no philosophy to memorize. The instruction is to listen first, then listen to the note, then listen to what remains after it fades. For anyone who has ever struggled to sit still with their own thoughts, the idea is worth slowing down for.

What actually happens in a one-note session?

The introduction is built as a sequence, and the order matters. It opens by naming the three movements of the practice. "Listening to the silence. And then listening to the one note. And then listening to the silence after the one note," Halperin says (0:13–0:23). The note sits in the middle, but the video spends as much time on the quiet on either side of it.

That structure asks something specific of the listener. Most of us treat a sound as an event that begins and ends. Here the note is treated more like a doorway. The silence before it prepares the room, and the silence after it is where the sound is allowed to finish dissolving into the space. The practice is less about the pitch itself than about the moment when the pitch is no longer there.

"Feeling the presence of divine essence coming into the room. Or the space that you're in." — Moshe Halperin, introduction video (0:29–0:41)

Notice the phrasing. He does not say to imagine a presence or to generate one. He says to feel it arriving, and then he widens the frame to include the room itself. The space you are sitting in is part of the instrument. That reframing is one of the quietest ideas in the piece, and it is easy to skim past.

Why does the practice open a door for whatever wants to come through?

After the note and the silence, the video introduces an open-ended line: "Allowing us to connect to whatever wants to come through" (0:46–0:51). Halperin does not specify what should arrive. The practice is designed to be receptive rather than goal-directed. This is a common stance in contemplative music traditions, where the sound is a vehicle and the listener is asked to remain available rather than to achieve a particular state.

The openness is the point, and it is also what makes the series hard to pin down on paper. A reader expecting a defined method, a timer, or a breathing count will not find one in this introduction. What the video offers instead is a posture: sit, listen, leave room.

What role do the prayers play in the sitting?

The second half of the introduction moves into prayer, and it is the most specific part of the video. Halperin names a sequence of intentions: "Prayer of gratitude" (0:51), "Prayer for peace" (0:54), "Prayer for ourselves, or our friends, or our loved ones" (0:59), and "Prayer for the blessing of our time on this planet" (1:03). The circle then widens to "Prayer for all beings" (1:11).

The sequence moves outward, from the self to friends and family, then to the planet and finally to all living things. Then comes the line that closes the introduction, repeated three times: "May all beings be happy." The phrasing echoes the widely known loving-kindness formula used in Buddhist practice, though the video itself does not name a tradition. The repetition is deliberate. On a page it looks like a refrain. Spoken slowly over a held tone, it becomes a rhythm the listener can rest inside.

One useful way to hold this is to see the prayers as the frame that gives the silence its direction. Without them, a sitting with a single note could feel like pure atmosphere. With them, the silence has a purpose: it becomes the space where intentions are offered and then released.

Who is Moshe Halperin, and where does this series come from?

The video's channel description places Halperin in the world of dreamscape and medicine music. He is described there as a songwriter, guitarist, singer and co-founder and music curator at Medicine Festival, working in a blend of ambient, popular and world influences. The description says his work is inspired by serene landscapes and the mystic wisdom of ancient cultures, and that he sees sound as a source of manifestation.

The description also points to a specific relationship that shapes his practice: a friendship with Huni Kuin shamans in the Brazilian Amazon, through which he says he was entrusted with sacred songs of the tribe. The introduction video itself does not discuss that lineage, so it is worth reading the one-note series as a related but separate offering. The channel also describes music as Halperin's religion. That is his framing, and the introduction does not argue it. What the video does show is the same conviction at work: sound as something that opens onto a larger presence.

What this introduction doesn't tell you yet

Honesty about the material matters here. This is a one-minute-and-forty-eight-second introduction. It does not state how long a full session runs, whether there are instructions on posture or breath, or how the series is structured across episodes. It is a frame, not a curriculum. If you come to it expecting detail, the detail is still to come.

That restraint may be intentional. The video's own description calls the series "a short introduction to meditation encouraging you to come and sit with the silence." The invitation is to sit, not to study.

How might you try the practice on your own?

Based only on what the introduction describes, a reasonable approach is simple. Sit somewhere quiet. Spend a moment listening to the silence before anything sounds. Hold or listen to a single note. Then stay with the silence that follows, and let any prayers of gratitude, peace or care arise in whatever order they come. End with the phrase Halperin repeats: may all beings be happy. Keep the session as long or as short as the room allows.

Where to go from here

Start with the introduction itself, which is brief enough to watch twice, once as a listener and once as someone sitting. Then pay attention to the silence after the note in your next quiet moment, not only to the sound. The series is still unfolding, and the sessions that follow will show how the one-note frame is developed. For now, the lesson of the introduction is compact: a single tone, held carefully, can tell you a great deal about the room around it.

The Medicine of One Note is a short meditation series by Moshe Halperin built around a single sustained note and the silence on either side of it. Each session asks the listener to hear the silence before the note, the note itself, and the silence after, with a prayer for whatever wishes to come through.
According to the introduction, you begin by listening to the silence, then to a single note, then to the silence that follows it. The video also invites you to feel the presence of the room you are in and to offer prayers of gratitude, peace, and care for yourself, loved ones, and all beings.
In this practice the silence before and after the note frames the sound, so the note becomes a doorway rather than an event. Halperin's introduction treats the silence after the note as the place where the sound is allowed to fade into the space around you.
The introduction names prayers of gratitude, prayers for peace, prayers for ourselves, friends and loved ones, prayers for the blessing of our time on this planet, and prayers for all beings. It closes by repeating the phrase 'May all beings be happy' three times.
Moshe Halperin is described on his channel as a dreamscape songwriter, guitarist, singer and co-founder and music curator at Medicine Festival. His work blends ambient, popular and world influences, and the channel notes a friendship with Huni Kuin shamans in the Brazilian Amazon through which he was entrusted with sacred songs.
The introduction does not list prerequisites and frames the series as a short introduction to meditation. Based on the video, the only requirement is a quiet place and the willingness to sit with the silence before, during and after a note.
