Noble Eightfold Path and Right View: A Dhamma Explainer

Von BSV Dhamma Talks

Ansehen · 6

On a Sunday morning at the Buddhist Society of Victoria's East Malvern centre in Melbourne, the session opens the way these gatherings usually do: the Three Refuges and Five Precepts in Pali, a recollection of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha, and a metta chant offered to all beings. Then the teacher, listed in the video as Ajahn Aranavihari, draws laughter by admitting he was once asked to write an essay on the Noble Eightfold Path and never did, so he would talk about it instead. What follows is a livestream released on 1 November 2026, rendered in auto-captions that blur whole passages, and it makes one of the clearest arguments for why the path begins where it does: with right view, and with the uncomfortable claim that the mind's default way of seeing the world already contains delusion. This piece works through that teaching as a standalone guide, drawing on the parts of the talk that come through clearly.

Why does the Noble Eightfold Path need a purpose before a practice?

The talk's first move is a question of order. The teacher argues that before anyone tries to practise the path, they must understand what it is and what it is for. In the standard arrangement, the eight factors are grouped under wisdom (right view and right intention), ethics (right speech, right action and right livelihood), and concentration (right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration). The speaker's point is that these are not a menu from which to pick a favourite. He says, in the talk's own phrasing:

"Without understanding these things, if we practice only one or two factors of the noble eightfold path, it is not much meaning."

(Ajahn Aranavihari, BSV Dhamma talk, around 17:20.) The purpose, he says, arises from right view. That is why he treats right view as the gateway rather than as one factor among equals. Everything else in the path is shaped by how one sees, so a person who has not examined their seeing is, in his framing, working with tools whose purpose they have not understood.

What does it mean that consciousness is already deluded?

This is the teaching's most provocative claim, and the teacher knows it. Delusion, he says, following the Buddha's teaching, is part of all existence: "all consciousnesses are based on delusion." He pauses on the reaction this produces, asking the room, "So are we ready to believe these kind of things?" and getting a laugh. The argument that follows is less about belief than about inspection. He asks listeners to watch what happens when consciousness arises, and what it produces: forms, feelings, perceptions, volitions, and further consciousness, linked to sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches and thoughts.

The key observation is that we do not register these experiences as impermanent. They arrive and we treat them as reliable, fixed and certain, then act on that assumption by making further choices. The speaker describes this as a natural flow rather than a personal failing. He puts it plainly: "It is common for all consciousnesses." Delusion, in this reading, is not an occasional lapse. It is the ordinary operating condition of experience, which is why the Buddha's teaching frames the task as filtering it out rather than adding a new idea on top.

"Otherwise naturally we have the wrong view. It is a part of our life."

(Ajahn Aranavihari, early in the teaching.) This is the reason right view cannot be assumed. If wrong view is the default, then right view has to be cultivated deliberately, and the path starts with that cultivation.

What are the three perceptions to train, and how do they work?

The talk offers the practical core of right view through three perceptions. Restated from the Pali he quotes, they are anicca saññā (perception of impermanence), dukkha saññā (perception of suffering) and anatta saññā (perception of not-self). The teacher's warning is the mirror image of each: we tend to perceive the impermanent as permanent, suffering as happiness, and not-self as self. He summarises the default this way: "we perceive impermanence as permanence."

The instruction is to develop the right perceptions and practise them in ordinary days, so that the view is not merely a conviction held in the meditation hall. He speaks of purifying and rectifying one's view "to right view," language that treats seeing as something that can be trained, much as a musician trains the ear to hear pitch that the untrained ear misses. A practical way to test the teaching, which is an application of the talk's logic rather than a quote from it, is to notice a moment when something feels solid or guaranteed, such as a mood, a plan or a relationship, and to ask whether its permanence was observed or assumed.

How does right intention follow from right view?

Once the talk establishes the view, it moves to the next stage, right intention (sammā saṅkappa). The teacher links intention to the states of mind a person returns to: when the mind comes back to sensual states, the path has to address that pull directly. In the standard formulation, right intention is the intention of renunciation, of non-ill-will and of non-harming, and the talk's emphasis suggests that intention is where a person's right view shows up in motive and desire. The sequence matters. Intention is not a resolution made in isolation; it grows from what one has seen clearly.

What does the eighth factor and the movement from origination to cessation mean?

The talk arrives at the eighth factor, right concentration (sammā samādhi), at around 36:01, and it frames the path as a movement from origination to cessation. The captions here are fragmentary, so the exact wording is hard to reconstruct, but the recurring language is clear. The speaker returns to cessation, to "the cessation of delusion," and to a cessation "with no residue left." The implication is that the path's destination is not the accumulation of more correct beliefs but the ceasing of the delusion that produced suffering in the first place. Concentration, in this light, is not a state to collect but a stabilising of the mind so that it can see origination and cessation without being carried off by them.

What is the blunt warning near the end of the talk?

Near the close, at about 1:13:26, the teacher delivers a short, emphatic line: "This is not Buddhism." The captions around it are too blurred to recover the full argument, and it would be a mistake to reconstruct a context the transcript does not support. What can be said is that the line marks a point where the talk separates a certain way of practising from the teaching it claims to serve. Later, at about 1:19:24, he returns to satipaṭṭhāna, the foundations of mindfulness, and to the distinction between liberation through wisdom and liberation of mind. Those passages are where the captions most often break down, so readers who want the exact formulations should listen directly.

How should you approach a talk like this one?

This is a long, live, unedited Sunday teaching. It includes extended chanting that auto-captions render as near-gibberish, asides, laughter, and administrative notices toward the end about community events, including a robe-cutting and a planned retreat. The Dhamma content is concentrated and rewarding, but the most useful way to use it is to treat the written summary as a map and the recording as the territory. Listen for the teacher's own phrasing when a point matters, because paraphrase, even careful paraphrase, can flatten the emphasis that a speaker places on a word.

Where to go from here

  • Watch the talk with the timestamps above, starting near 17:20 for the purpose of the path and near 18:35 for the teaching on delusion.
  • Study the three perceptions (anicca, dukkha and anatta saññā) in a standard Theravāda source before returning to the talk, so the Pali terms are familiar when they come up quickly.
  • Read the wider context of the path, especially how right view and right intention relate to the other six factors, rather than practising one or two in isolation, as the teacher cautions.
  • Explore the Buddhist Society of Victoria at https://www.bsv.net.au/ for its meditation and teaching programmes, and Newbury Buddhist Monastery at https://nbm.org.au/ for the forest monastery setting the description mentions.

[16:55] not the problem say

[16:58] problem

[17:00] the

[17:02] that's

[17:03] >> [clears throat]

[17:11] >> So, all of you are welcome to the Sunday

[17:14] Dhamma talk in Buddhist society,

[17:16] Victoria.

[17:18] So,

[17:20] today I thought to talk about

[17:24] the practicing noble eightfold path. So,

[17:28] I saw that

[17:31] topic on

[17:33] one of the documents of

[17:35] uh we were asked to write essay on these

[17:38] things. So, actually I

[17:40] >> [laughter]

[17:40] [gasps]

[17:41] >> I didn't do it, but I thought it is good

[17:43] to talk

[17:45] about the how this uh practicing noble

[17:48] eightfold path.

[17:50] So, the most important thing about noble

[17:53] eightfold path is

[17:55] we should understand what is noble

[17:57] eightfold path and what is the purpose

[17:59] of noble eightfold path.

[18:01] >> [snorts]

[18:02] >> Without understanding these things, we

[18:03] if we practice only one or two factors

[18:06] of noble eightfold path is

[18:08] no much meaning.

[18:11] So, the purpose of noble eightfold path

[18:14] should understand first. So, this

[18:16] purpose arise

[18:19] because of the right view.

[18:23] Right view means you

[18:25] Lord Buddha inspire to see this world

[18:29] based on such a way

[18:31] without

[18:33] not without falling into delusion

[18:35] because the d-

[18:36] According to Buddhism according to

[18:38] Buddha's teachings, delusion is a part

[18:41] of all existences, all all lives, all

[18:44] consciousnesses are based on delusion.

[18:48] That is how Lord Buddha

[18:50] the [snorts] introduce

[18:52] this Dhamma or the way

[18:56] you should understand your life or

[18:58] anyone's life

[19:00] any [snorts] consciousness in this world

[19:03] always based on delusion. That's how

[19:06] Lord Buddha say and that's how we should

[19:09] understand. So

[19:12] So

[19:13] are we ready to believe these kind of

[19:15] things?

[19:16] >> [laughter]

[19:17] >> Who who want to believe these things?

[19:20] So then then Lord Buddha inspire

[19:23] >> [snorts]

[19:24] >> to investigate and see

[19:28] how we take this consciousness is

[19:31] deluded.

[19:33] So Lord Buddha inspire to see this this

[19:36] thing to understand

[19:38] by

[19:39] carefully examine

[19:41] when we are conscious in this world that

[19:44] means you when consciousness arise.

[19:46] >> [snorts]

[19:47] >> Whatever thing produced by consciousness

[19:50] that means forms, feelings, perceptions,

[19:52] volitions and consciousnesses new

[19:55] another conscious.

[19:59] Don't take

[20:01] the forms we perceive or we understand

[20:04] through our consciousness that is uh

[20:07] sight, sounds, smells, tastes, touches

[20:10] and thoughts.

[20:12] We don't take as

[20:15] impermanent when we are dealing with uh

[20:18] this

[20:19] when these things arise within us.

[20:22] >> [snorts]

[20:22] >> The forms we don't take as impermanent,

[20:25] we take as we actually

[20:28] do not consider as impermanent. It

[20:32] automatically takes as permanent and

[20:34] dealing deal with sight, sound, smell,

[20:37] taste, touch and thoughts.

[20:40] And make further actions or choices.

[20:45] >> [snorts]

[20:46] >> It is a It is It is a a kind of a

[20:48] natural flow of happening things within

[20:50] us.

[20:53] Without taking these things as

[20:56] impermanent, without considering the the

[20:59] the unreliability on these forms,

[21:02] feelings, perceptions and volitions.

[21:05] Take as reliable, take as permanent,

[21:07] take as fixed.

[21:09] Uh take as certain.

[21:11] It It

[21:12] It is not we are specifically taking,

[21:15] but the It is a part of consciousness.

[21:17] It is a part of the activity of

[21:19] consciousness.

[21:21] >> [snorts]

[21:21] >> In natural It is a It is a kind of a

[21:23] natural flow

[21:25] happening within us, within all living

[21:28] beings.

[21:29] >> [snorts]

[21:30] >> That's why Lord Buddha say consciousness

[21:33] is deluded already.

[21:35] The In In other words, Buddha say

[21:39] uh

[21:40] >> [snorts]

[21:40] >> anicca nicca saññā

[21:42] dukkhe sukha saññā anatte atta saññā.

[21:45] That means

[21:46] we perceive

[21:49] uh impermanence as permanence.

[21:53] Uncertainty the the suffering as

[21:56] the happiness or the not suffering.

[21:59] >> [snorts]

[22:00] >> Uh

[22:01] not self as self.

[22:04] It is a It It is happening within us

[22:08] as a natu- natural phenomena.

[22:10] It is a It is a natural phenomena always

[22:13] happening within any living

[22:14] [clears throat] being. It is not only

[22:16] for you or someone else.

[22:18] It is common for all living beings.

[22:21] It is common for all consciousnesses.

[22:25] So that's why Lord Buddha said this this

[22:28] flow this natural phenomena always based

[22:32] on delusion.

[22:33] >> [snorts]

[22:34] >> So therefore

[22:36] we have to

[22:38] filter out this delusion to see this

[22:41] world properly.

[22:43] So that means you may have to develop

[22:46] Anicca Anicca Sanna, Dukkha Dukkha

[22:49] Sanna,

[22:50] Anatta Anatta Sanna. That means we have

[22:52] to develop the right perceptions within

[22:54] us

[22:55] and practice these right perceptions in

[22:58] our day-to-day life to see this world

[23:00] properly, correctly, or right

[23:03] the develop the right view.

[23:05] Otherwise

[23:07] naturally we have the wrong view.

[23:10] >> [snorts]

[23:11] >> It is a part of our life.

[23:13] Wrong view is a part of our life. So

[23:16] then we have to develop the right view,

[23:18] practice the practice the non-delusion

[23:21] and rectify our view.

[23:25] Purify

[23:28] our view to right view. Otherwise we

[23:31] already have the wrong view.

[23:33] >> [snorts]

[23:34] >> Because our vision always based on

[23:37] delusion. Or our consciousness always

[23:39] based on delusion.

[23:43] So that is the most important thing we

[23:46] have to keep in mind and practice.

[23:47] Otherwise we don't we don't get what is

[23:50] what is the right view and what is wrong

[23:52] view.

[23:53] >> [snorts]

[23:54] >> Lord Buddha said when you practice these

[23:56] right perceptions by removing wrong

[23:59] perceptions

[24:00] at the the Anicca

[24:03] the Nicca Sanna, Sukha Sanna, Atta Sanna

[24:06] we remove and we practice Anicca Sanna,

[24:09] Dukkha Sanna, Anatta Sanna. So that it

[24:12] will

[24:14] correct our

[24:16] perceptions and then we see through

[24:18] those perceptions this world then we

[24:22] develop the right understanding about

[24:24] the world.

[24:26] What is right understanding about the

[24:29] world according to Buddhism.

[24:33] Dukha nyana, dukha samudaya nyana,

[24:35] nirodha nyana, nirodha gamini patipada

[24:37] nyana. The knowledge of suffering

[24:40] we then try to

[24:43] gain the the right knowledges regarding

[24:46] this world. Knowledge of suffering.

[24:49] Because

[24:50] if you take

[24:52] uh if you don't carefully

[24:55] uh

[24:56] remove the the

[24:58] ni anicca sanna. Because nicca sanna we

[25:01] we normally

[25:03] when consciousness is working normally

[25:06] uh

[25:06] take all all the things arising our mind

[25:10] all forms, feelings, perceptions,

[25:12] volitions, and consciousnesses arise

[25:14] within us

[25:15] we don't take as impermanent and we fall

[25:19] into further actions of further

[25:21] uh

[25:22] activities through our mind and body

[25:26] >> [snorts]

[25:27] >> uh

[25:28] based on rely on these forms, feelings,

[25:30] perceptions, volitions, and

[25:32] consciousnesses arise within us in each

[25:34] and every moment.

[25:36] So it is a natural flow of happening

[25:39] within us.

[25:41] >> [snorts]

[25:41] >> Flow of this uh mentality flowing and uh

[25:45] the all our bodily actions or the the

[25:48] mentality and materiality related to our

[25:51] life always

[25:53] run as a flow based on this delusion. So

[25:56] that's why Lord Buddha say

[25:58] you have to

[25:59] carefully uh

[26:03] remove this delusion so then you see

[26:07] this world in the right way so you you

[26:10] uh see all the forms, feelings,

[26:12] perceptions, volitions, and

[26:13] consciousnesses arise within us as

[26:15] impermanent. Therefore

[26:19] we are vulnerable to suffering because

[26:21] when if you are not mindful

[26:24] naturally we take impermanent things as

[26:27] it permanent that means impermanent

[26:28] forms, feelings, perceptions, volitions

[26:30] as permanent

[26:31] make our future expectations or the

[26:34] future plans or activities or activities

[26:37] related to the present moment.

[26:41] All these things

[26:43] have a certain level of uncertainty.

[26:47] So, if we rely on these things,

[26:49] definitely we fall into suffering. So,

[26:52] now you feel things as

[26:54] this is good, this is nice, this is

[26:56] beautiful. Our feelings are pleasant.

[27:00] Nice.

[27:01] But, this pleasantness

[27:04] always depend on causes and conditions

[27:06] in this moment.

[27:08] When the causes and conditions change,

[27:10] that that is called uncertainty

[27:12] impermanence.

[27:13] So, we fall into unhappy states or

[27:17] suffering states. So, if we know this is

[27:20] the nature, this is the reality,

[27:22] so we we do not we don't go into too

[27:26] much relying on our forms, feelings,

[27:28] perceptions, and volition. That is

[27:30] anicce anicca sanna.

[27:32] We keep that

[27:34] perception of impermanence

[27:37] in use

[27:38] in our daily life and let go the nicca

[27:40] sanna and establish the anicca sanna.

[27:44] So, [snorts] then we we don't take

[27:46] everything as happiness because we know

[27:49] that

[27:50] even though happy things are

[27:53] impermanent, therefore it leads to

[27:55] unhappiness. So, we are not going to

[27:58] strongly uh attach or holding on to all

[28:02] these forms, feelings, perceptions that

[28:04] arise within us.

[28:06] So, we ready to let go and be calm. And

[28:09] but, we use these things in our

[28:11] day-to-day life activities because we

[28:13] have to rely on our senses. We have to

[28:15] rely on our consciousness

[28:17] to live in this world.

[28:22] But, we know suffering is always

[28:24] associated with this phenomena. So,

[28:26] therefore

[28:27] >> [snorts]

[28:27] >> we

[28:29] we may we are not going to keep high

[28:32] hopes on

[28:34] this phenomena and the products of the

[28:35] phenomena. That means all

[28:38] forms, feelings, perceptions, volitions,

[28:40] and consciousnesses arise within us.

[28:43] So,

[28:44] so that is practicing non-delusion, and

[28:46] then we we gradually develop the

[28:49] knowledges regarding

[28:52] our

[28:53] consciousnesses.

[28:55] And all the products of consciousness,

[28:56] all forms, feelings, perceptions,

[28:58] volitions, and consciousnesses are

[29:01] leads to suffering. There is suffering,

[29:03] then become You see this world the the

[29:06] You you gain the knowledges regarding

[29:10] >> [snorts]

[29:11] >> all your mentality and materiality.

[29:14] Gradually, you gain these things.

[29:16] Then the the the cause of suffering.

[29:19] Cause of suffering means

[29:21] the the the the craving arise within us.

[29:24] If you are not mindful,

[29:26] naturally, the craving arise within us.

[29:29] Or it it is a part of your

[29:30] consciousness. When you are conscious,

[29:33] the the choices arise, and craving arise

[29:35] within us as an

[29:37] as a consequence.

[29:40] So, if you know this, this is the

[29:42] nature, so you can let go your craving

[29:45] arise within you.

[29:47] You can cut off it

[29:49] without much worry.

[29:51] Because you don't take The next thing is

[29:54] you don't take as I me myself. This is a

[29:57] products of

[29:59] this natural phenomena. This is this

[30:01] body me and mind is a natural phenomena,

[30:04] so no need to take it as I me myself. It

[30:07] is happening within all other living

[30:09] beings, including your body and mind.

[30:11] So,

[30:13] you develop the ability to let go.

[30:19] >> [snorts]

[30:19] >> That is third

[30:21] third noble truth.

[30:23] Achieving the cessation, letting go.

[30:26] That is me achieving the Nirodha, the

[30:29] the cessation of all the phenomena. Or

[30:33] in the present moment, whatever thing

[30:34] arise, you you can let go and

[30:37] release get release your mind.

[30:41] It is a one step of

[30:43] achieving cessation.

[30:45] The

[30:48] uh

[30:50] Chago patinisago mutti analio. You

[30:53] patinisago is just let go.

[30:55] And release your mind. Mutti, then you

[30:58] release your mind. Mutti means you

[31:00] release your mind.

[31:01] One by one. So, you can achieve these

[31:04] states. Then you you see it as a

[31:06] practical thing you can achieve easily.

[31:11] So, then you develop mind to more deeper

[31:14] level level of liberation. No more

[31:17] wanting craving

[31:19] to have this these states of

[31:21] experiences. You can develop mind to

[31:24] more deeper

[31:26] levels of cessation.

[31:28] That means you

[31:29] uh fully turn off the sensuality.

[31:32] >> [snorts]

[31:33] >> So, that's it that is how Oh,

[31:35] the when we practice the noble eightfold

[31:37] path, develop mind stage by stage. So,

[31:41] we uh for uh practicing all the the when

[31:46] we talk about practicing noble eightfold

[31:49] path, we should understand why we should

[31:53] practice noble eightfold path. What is

[31:54] the purpose of it?

[31:56] >> [snorts]

[31:57] >> So, this purpose come from

[31:59] the understanding of

[32:02] four noble truths.

[32:04] That is the first factor of noble

[32:06] eightfold path, right view. Right view

[32:09] means the understanding about the four

[32:11] noble truths.

[32:13] When we understand the four four noble

[32:15] truths, then we get the motivation to

[32:18] practice

[32:19] noble eightfold path. Second factor of

[32:22] noble eightfold path is

[32:25] uh

[32:27] right motivation.

[32:29] Samma sankappa.

[32:31] >> [snorts]

[32:31] >> Right motivation or the right purpose of

[32:33] the practice.

[32:35] That is

[32:36] uh Uh

[32:38] uh

[32:40] non-cruelty, non-ill will, and

[32:42] non-sensuality.

[32:44] It leads to non-sensuality.

[32:47] So, that is the most important thing.

[32:49] So, [snorts] non-cruelty, non-ill will,

[32:51] and non-sensuality. Because cruelty, ill

[32:54] will, and sensuality come from delusion.

[32:58] >> [snorts]

[32:59] >> We take

[33:00] all our experiences leads to happiness,

[33:03] then crave, we strongly attached to

[33:06] these sensual objects.

[33:09] Why?

[33:10] We We wrongly

[33:12] interact, or we wrongly take these

[33:16] sensual objects, sight, sound, smells,

[33:18] taste, touches, and thoughts.

[33:19] Or in general, forms, feelings,

[33:22] perceptions, volitions, and

[33:23] consciousnesses arise within us.

[33:26] All the forms for a human is sight,

[33:29] sound, smells, taste, touches, and

[33:30] thoughts related to the this this

[33:32] sensual world objects.

[33:35] So, all these things I When we take

[33:36] these things I

[33:37] as impermanent, we are not going to

[33:39] strongly attached to any of these

[33:40] things. So, we can quickly release our

[33:43] mind.

[33:44] That is [snorts] why

[33:45] the practicing the anicca saññā, the

[33:48] perception of uncertainty,

[33:51] is helpful to get release your mind from

[33:55] attaching to the this sensual world

[33:57] objects.

[33:58] >> [snorts]

[33:59] >> And all the feelings, perceptions, and

[34:02] volitions related to these sensual world

[34:05] objects,

[34:07] we can let go by contemplating as

[34:09] impermanent, suffering, and not self.

[34:11] So, that's why So, this basic

[34:14] non-delusion you should understand. This

[34:17] is the the the ground level of

[34:19] non-delusion.

[34:21] So, when we practice

[34:23] the the notion of non-delusion, or the

[34:26] this is delusion and this is

[34:28] non-delusion, so we can quickly release

[34:30] our mind from the sensual world.

[34:33] That is called non-sensuality.

[34:36] So, [snorts] but when we are living in

[34:37] this world, we can't fully practice

[34:40] non-sensuality all the time.

[34:42] But, we can reserve times

[34:46] to release our mind from

[34:48] the sensuality. So, when we are

[34:50] practicing meditation,

[34:52] we can

[34:53] fully let go the sensuality and develop

[34:55] mind to the non-sensual states of mind.

[34:58] So, that is the path that is the

[34:59] practice of that is the higher level of

[35:01] the practice of the path.

[35:04] That is

[35:05] right effort, right mindfulness, and

[35:08] right stillness of the mind.

[35:11] That is sammasamadhi. Sammasamadhi is

[35:14] right stillness or right concentration.

[35:17] When we develop mind to those these

[35:19] higher states of mind, so then we can

[35:22] achieve the deep stillnesses of the mind

[35:25] or the liberation from the sensuality.

[35:30] So, there is a higher state of mind

[35:32] beyond

[35:33] beyond humanity. Uttari manussa dhamma.

[35:36] These are called Uttari manussa dhamma.

[35:38] We have to put an effort.

[35:40] You have to That is That's why

[35:43] right effort

[35:44] come as the sixth factor of noble

[35:47] eightfold path. The seventh factor is

[35:50] right mindfulness based on right effort.

[35:53] >> [snorts]

[35:53] >> And then it leads to

[35:56] right

[35:57] stillness or liberation.

[35:59] The it is

[36:01] this the the the eighth factor of noble

[36:03] eightfold path is uh

[36:08] is

[36:09] right stillness means four jhanas. Four

[36:12] jhanas, Lord Buddha say it is a

[36:15] liberation

[36:16] from the sensuality. It is a liberation

[36:19] cetovimutti. Mind got liberated from

[36:24] sensuality.

[36:25] Liberated from suffering.

[36:28] It is a temporary state of mind, but

[36:30] still you can develop mind to these

[36:33] states to directly experience the

[36:35] liberation.

[36:37] So, that is the purpose of the path.

[36:40] >> [snorts]

[36:40] >> So, this is a gradual development,

[36:42] gradual

[36:43] uh practice of

[36:45] the path to develop the liberate mind

[36:48] from the sensuality.

[36:50] Liberate mind from the suffering states.

[36:52] Because the sensual states are

[36:54] highly impermanent and uncertain. So,

[36:58] when you develop mind to these these

[37:00] mind-made states of mind the the the

[37:02] states of uh, mind. So, these are little

[37:05] bit stable than these sensual state.

[37:08] Still you have attached to these states

[37:10] of

[37:11] uh, sensual states that the mind come

[37:13] back, then you can understand why mind

[37:16] mind come back to the sensual states

[37:18] that in this human life.

[37:20] Human body and human mind related to

[37:23] this

[37:24] sensuality.

[37:26] >> [snorts]

[37:27] >> So, then I will read a sutta related to

[37:31] this on how Lord Buddha inspire people

[37:33] to

[37:34] practice the path.

[37:37] What is the right practice?

[37:40] In this sutta about the sutta I'm going

[37:43] to read here

[37:44] today.

[37:46] Lord Buddha say

[37:48] the practicing right

[37:50] uh,

[37:50] the the right practice

[37:53] of this Buddha's teachings means you are

[37:56] practicing

[37:59] the

[38:00] paticcasamuppada, the dependent

[38:02] origination in the right way.

[38:05] You are going to stop this dependent

[38:08] origination.

[38:10] Because the dependent origination Lord

[38:12] Buddha show independent origination

[38:15] everything originated from delusion.

[38:18] Now, you are going to stop the delusion.

[38:21] When you are stopping the delusion all

[38:23] the the consequences come behind you. By

[38:26] behind this that the the dependent

[38:28] origination come to the cessation.

[38:32] That is the original the starting point

[38:35] come to

[38:37] the cessation. There is going to stop

[38:40] the delusion.

[38:42] Means you are going to stop your

[38:45] consciousness. You are going to stop all

[38:47] sankhara which create consciousness.

[38:51] Then everything go to the cessation.

[38:53] If when you are not

[38:55] no more conscious,

[38:57] then no more feelings, perceptions,

[38:59] volitions,

[39:00] and more consciousness consciousnesses

[39:03] no not going to arise again. That is a

[39:06] type of a cessation.

[39:08] >> [snorts]

[39:08] >> It is a

[39:09] it is a cessation.

[39:13] So that's why when we are practicing

[39:15] non-delusion it uh everything go to the

[39:18] cessation.

[39:20] That is what this this uh sutta explain.

[39:24] I will read this suttas because it is it

[39:26] is very important to go to suttas and

[39:31] refer to suttas. This is direct

[39:32] teachings of the Buddha.

[39:34] These are all direct teachings of the

[39:36] Buddha.

[39:38] >> [snorts]

[39:46] [snorts]

[39:53] >> Yeah. This is called Patipada Sutta.

[39:59] I will read.

[40:00] Uh this is Samyutta Nikaya Nidanavagga

[40:04] Samyutta Nidana Samyutta

[40:07] Buddhavagga.

[40:11] Patipada Sutta.

[40:13] >> [snorts]

[40:13] >> Uh

[40:15] if you read in This is Ajahn Sujato's

[40:17] translation.

[40:18] Uh

[40:20] if you read this one in

[40:22] Sutta Central,

[40:23] so you can go to the SN

[40:27] 12.3.

[40:29] SN 12.3.

[40:35] Uh Ajahn Sujato uh

[40:37] translate this Patipada Sutta as

[40:39] practice.

[40:41] Practice. This is the translation.

[40:43] At Savatthi,

[40:47] Buddha addressed the mendicants.

[40:49] Mendicants,

[40:50] I will teach you the wrong practice and

[40:53] the right practice.

[40:56] Listen and apply your mind well. I will

[40:59] speak.

[41:03] "Yes, sir." They replied. The Buddha

[41:05] said this.

[41:09] And

[41:10] what is the wrong practice?

[41:16] Ignorance

[41:17] is a requirement for choices. This is

[41:19] the wrong practice. Ignorance is a

[41:22] requirement for choices.

[41:25] Choices are a requirement for

[41:27] consciousnesses.

[41:29] >> [snorts]

[41:29] >> Consciousnesses is a requirement for

[41:32] name and form.

[41:34] Nama-rupa.

[41:36] Name and form are requirements for the

[41:39] six sense fields.

[41:42] The six sense fields are requirements

[41:45] for contact. Contact

[41:48] is a requirement for feeling. Feeling is

[41:51] a requirement for craving. Craving is a

[41:54] requirement for grasping or upadana.

[41:58] Attachment.

[42:00] Grasping is a requirement for continued

[42:03] existence. Continued existence is a

[42:07] requirement for rebirth. Rebirth is a

[42:10] requirement for old age,

[42:13] death,

[42:14] old age and death, sorrow, lamentation,

[42:17] pain, sadness,

[42:20] and distress

[42:22] to come to be.

[42:25] That is how this entire mass of

[42:27] suffering originates.

[42:30] This is called wrong practice.

[42:33] That means

[42:34] if you allow to happen

[42:37] this dependent origination within you,

[42:40] that means

[42:41] you are allow

[42:43] to delusion

[42:45] to come to the action within your body

[42:48] and mind.

[42:49] That means

[42:50] delusion that just uh

[42:54] uh generate consciousness and then you

[42:56] are start the

[42:58] five four five sense fields start

[43:03] uh six uh sense faculties

[43:06] uh

[43:09] uh start

[43:10] come to come to action.

[43:12] And all the feelings, perceptions, all

[43:14] the craving, wanting, attachment happen

[43:17] within you.

[43:19] So,

[43:21] therefore, you have to

[43:23] train your mind to let go and bring to

[43:26] the cessation.

[43:28] That is the purpose of the path.

[43:30] Achieving the cessation, cessation of

[43:33] suffering.

[43:35] That means

[43:36] when you are practicing the right thing

[43:38] means you are practicing the cessation.

[43:43] That is the purpose of noble eightfold

[43:45] path.

[43:46] And what is the right practice? Then I

[43:48] will read the next part of this sutta.

[43:51] >> [snorts]

[43:51] >> When ignorance fade away

[43:54] and cessation with no residue left

[43:57] behind choices.

[44:00] Behind choices

[44:02] uh ceases.

[44:04] When ignorance fade away and ceases

[44:07] within no residue left behind

[44:10] then the choices ceases.

[44:13] When the choices ceases

[44:15] the then the when the choices cease

[44:19] consciousness cease.

[44:21] When the consciousness ceases name and

[44:25] form cease.

[44:27] When name and form cease the six sense

[44:30] field cease. When the six sense field

[44:33] cease contact ceases. When contact

[44:36] ceases feeling ceases cease.

[44:40] When feeling cease ceases

[44:42] uh craving ceases. When craving ceases

[44:46] grasping ceases.

[44:48] When grasping ceases continued existence

[44:52] ceases. When continued existence ceases,

[44:56] rebirth ceases.

[44:59] >> [snorts]

[45:00] >> When rebirth ceases, old age, death,

[45:03] sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and

[45:08] distress cease.

[45:11] That is how entire mass of suffering

[45:14] ceases.

[45:15] This is called the right practice.

[45:18] >> [snorts]

[45:19] >> So, Lord Buddha explained what is right

[45:22] practice and what is wrong practice in

[45:24] this [clears throat] way also.

[45:26] So, that is you are practicing noble

[45:29] eightfold path means you are practicing

[45:34] how to reach the cessation of suffering.

[45:39] That means you

[45:41] the suffering arise when consciousness

[45:44] arise in this world.

[45:46] When the consciousness arise in this

[45:48] world?

[45:49] When you come to the rebirth.

[45:52] >> [gasps]

[45:53] >> When you

[45:54] come to

[45:56] the existence in this world as a small

[45:59] child or come the rebirth as a human

[46:04] in this [snorts] world,

[46:06] then

[46:07] this body and mind existence come to

[46:10] this world.

[46:12] Then the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body,

[46:14] mind, consciousness start functioning in

[46:16] this world.

[46:19] >> [snorts]

[46:20] >> So, how we achieve

[46:22] the cessation of rebirth?

[46:25] So, for achieving the cessation of

[46:26] rebirth, you should achieve the

[46:29] cessation of this

[46:31] natural flow of happening things. That

[46:34] is

[46:34] this dependent origination start from

[46:37] delusion. So, then you should achieve

[46:40] the cessation of delusion.

[46:43] How it happen?

[46:46] So, there are is if there is no more

[46:48] consciousness,

[46:50] >> [snorts]

[46:51] >> that means you you achieve the cessation

[46:53] of consciousness cessation of delusion.

[46:56] So, that's why Lord Buddha say

[46:58] you should achieve the develop mind to

[47:01] the

[47:02] full cessation. Cessation of

[47:06] uh

[47:07] >> [snorts]

[47:08] >> uh cessation of

[47:10] uh forms and feelings.

[47:12] That is the highest state of mind you

[47:14] can achieve.

[47:15] By developing mind

[47:17] developing the cessation of the mind.

[47:20] Cessation.

[47:22] The mind we

[47:23] describe based on feelings, perceptions,

[47:26] and volitions.

[47:28] >> [snorts]

[47:28] >> If there is no feelings, no perceptions,

[47:30] no volitions

[47:32] means there is no more consciousness.

[47:35] No more conscious means

[47:37] it is the cessation of mind.

[47:42] That is the way Buddha explain it. So,

[47:44] these things we can directly

[47:47] do uh experience or directly develop

[47:50] these states of mind.

[47:53] So, you get when you develop your mind,

[47:55] you can come to these states of these uh

[47:58] the the full cessation. You can achieve

[48:01] the full cessation. That's how Lord

[48:04] Buddha inspire people to do. People

[48:06] practice these things and achieve these

[48:08] states of mind.

[48:11] The first thing is the practicing noble

[48:13] eightfold path

[48:15] to achieve the cessation of sensual

[48:17] world. Then you can understand, yes,

[48:19] cessation is a

[48:21] reality.

[48:23] Cessation can be achieved

[48:25] by

[48:27] practicing.

[48:29] The cessation of human life, human body

[48:32] can achieve

[48:34] by practicing

[48:35] mind

[48:36] and turn away from the sensuality

[48:39] and develop mind to the non-sensual

[48:41] states, then mind is no more

[48:44] uh

[48:45] uh

[48:45] uh

[48:47] adverting the sensual world objects or

[48:50] the sensuality.

[48:52] Then mind go and advert the non-sensual

[48:55] world objects and stay with the

[48:57] non-sensuality.

[48:58] So, then the this human body go to the

[49:00] cessation.

[49:02] Cessation means now scientists do

[49:05] research on these things and say when a

[49:06] person attain jhanas, human body go to

[49:09] the clinical death. That's actually they

[49:11] say.

[49:12] Clinical death means your body and mind

[49:14] is no more no more working. That means

[49:16] the human body go to the clinical death.

[49:19] And mind go to the different state of

[49:20] existence and experience a different

[49:23] thing.

[49:24] >> [snorts]

[49:24] >> So, these things possible to achieve

[49:26] then that that is called cessation of

[49:28] the sensuality.

[49:31] The sensual world consciousnesses. The

[49:33] consciousness That's why Lord Buddha

[49:34] divide consciousness into six classes.

[49:38] >> [laughter]

[49:38] >> Mind consciousness is one thing.

[49:42] Mind consciousness related to sensuality

[49:44] is one thing. So, that means that's why

[49:46] six

[49:47] faculties uh

[49:49] explained in Buddhism. Eye, ear, nose,

[49:52] tongue, body, mind.

[49:53] And the consciousnesses also related to

[49:55] eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind

[49:58] is also

[49:59] uh take as separate consciousnesses.

[50:03] >> [snorts]

[50:04] >> When this human body go to the cessation

[50:07] that means the

[50:09] eye, ear, nose, tongue, body go to the

[50:11] cessation, all the mentality related to

[50:13] the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body go to

[50:15] the cessation.

[50:16] Then the mind in mind stay in a

[50:18] different state of existence. That means

[50:20] the mind is adverting a different type

[50:23] of objects.

[50:24] It is not related to the five senses.

[50:27] The five senses world go to the

[50:29] cessation.

[50:31] So, these things are

[50:33] realities which are not common for

[50:36] normal living beings in this world.

[50:39] >> [snorts]

[50:41] >> If only the people who practice the path

[50:44] and develop mind to these higher states

[50:48] only know this is a truth. This is a

[50:50] reality.

[50:52] So, the other people when they associate

[50:55] with such people who develop mind to

[50:57] these higher states and they inspire the

[51:01] common people. So, if they have faith

[51:04] and confidence regarding those people

[51:07] and their teachings,

[51:09] so then they get the inspiration. They

[51:12] get the courage to practice the path and

[51:15] develop the mind to these higher states.

[51:18] That is those are the only people

[51:22] who practice the path and develop mind

[51:25] to these higher states

[51:28] and directly experience these states of

[51:30] mind.

[51:33] It is a reality for them,

[51:36] not to the people who don't practice

[51:38] and do not have faith and confidence

[51:40] regarding these things.

[51:43] But the interesting and important thing

[51:46] is

[51:47] when you have faith and confidence,

[51:50] these teachings and the people who

[51:52] practice these things and associate with

[51:54] such people and get inspired to develop

[51:57] these practices within your body and

[52:00] mind,

[52:01] and achieve these states of mind, then

[52:04] you can directly experience these states

[52:06] of mind. And

[52:08] the one of the fortunate things for you

[52:11] to

[52:13] understand,

[52:15] even the these days people practice

[52:17] these things and achieve these higher

[52:18] states of mind.

[52:20] And scientist

[52:22] were interested and they did research on

[52:25] these people who develop mind to jhana

[52:28] states and they clearly understand

[52:31] when these people

[52:34] attain these jhana states,

[52:36] their human bodies

[52:38] go to clinical death.

[52:41] That means their the the brain function

[52:44] and heart function

[52:46] stop.

[52:48] That means

[52:49] they are dead dead those bodies are dead

[52:52] bodies.

[52:54] >> [laughter]

[52:54] >> No more human life for them

[52:57] at that state of mind.

[53:00] >> [snorts]

[53:00] >> But when that mind come back to the

[53:02] human body, then human body start

[53:05] functioning again.

[53:07] As

[53:08] before.

[53:10] So, their heart function and brain

[53:12] function

[53:13] restart and

[53:15] revive again.

[53:17] >> [snorts]

[53:19] >> So, then they understand, yes, they come

[53:20] back. Then they question them and then

[53:23] they record all what they experience.

[53:26] And [snorts] this thing they publish

[53:28] research papers based on this

[53:30] experience.

[53:32] They say this is a this is a phenomena.

[53:36] This science have no direct explanation,

[53:38] but this is a

[53:40] they they take as paranormal phenomena.

[53:43] It is a phenomena.

[53:45] >> [snorts]

[53:46] [laughter]

[53:47] >> So, now you can ask questions.

[53:55] Okay.

[53:57] >> Sorry, just

[53:59] Sorry, can you just can you just wait to

[54:00] take for the mic?

[54:05] You were just quick off the mark.

[54:12] Yeah, I I was reading a book talk about

[54:14] the Eightfold Path and there's something

[54:15] they mentioned in it which I couldn't

[54:16] understand at all and that it said that

[54:18] emptiness is no different from form and

[54:20] form is no different from emptiness. I

[54:22] couldn't understand what I meant at all.

[54:25] That was on the topic of the Eightfold

[54:27] Path. I think it was Mahayana book.

[54:30] Yeah.

[54:31] >> Yeah, this emptiness

[54:34] is a

[54:35] how they explain their experience.

[54:39] When they develop mind to these states

[54:42] of the higher states, so they can

[54:45] develop different perceptions.

[54:47] >> Mhm.

[54:48] >> These perceptions, actually, these are

[54:50] states of mind. These are very stable

[54:53] states of mind. That's why they they

[54:54] take

[54:55] as a

[54:57] That is the That is their understanding.

[54:59] That is their perception.

[55:01] There is nothing here.

[55:03] >> Mhm.

[55:04] >> So, it is very stable state of mind

[55:06] according to the Dhamma. Not only

[55:08] Dhamma, it is it is a kind of a

[55:10] practice. Practice even Buddha's time

[55:12] the other

[55:14] other the practitioners, the Brahmins,

[55:17] practice these states of mind.

[55:20] And actually

[55:21] even before Buddha become the Buddha, he

[55:24] was a Bodhisattva, the person who

[55:27] investigating how how to achieve the

[55:30] cessation of suffering.

[55:32] So, he he went to different different

[55:35] teachers. The Alara Kalama, the person

[55:39] who taught him

[55:40] to achieve these higher states of mind.

[55:43] So, he

[55:45] he was able to achieve these states of

[55:47] mind. That is called the this

[55:49] nothingness.

[55:52] State of nothingness. That is called

[55:54] Akincannayatana. It is a state of mind

[55:57] they develop

[55:59] and directly experience there's nothing.

[56:02] Natthikinci.

[56:03] There's nothing.

[56:05] >> [snorts]

[56:06] >> So, achieve these states of mind and

[56:08] this perception.

[56:10] So, they don't see anything there.

[56:12] Because they first day they go through a

[56:15] process of

[56:16] experiences. It is not one thing. They

[56:20] come to different state of experiences.

[56:23] They first see this uh

[56:26] uh the the the consciousness the the

[56:30] infinite consciousness.

[56:32] It is the no this consciousness rise and

[56:34] pass away

[56:36] continuously without any end.

[56:39] Then they see

[56:42] there's nothing in this process because

[56:45] this this consciousness arise

[56:48] in nowhere.

[56:50] Just arise and pass away. Arise and pass

[56:52] away. This is a state of mind. You know,

[56:54] they this is a high higher level of

[56:56] perception.

[56:57] >> [snorts]

[56:57] >> The Lord Buddha say

[57:00] if a person develop mind to these states

[57:04] if he when his body this human body

[57:06] passed away

[57:08] go to the death

[57:10] they go and reborn in this state of

[57:11] existence. These are become state of

[57:14] existences. These are called Brahma

[57:17] realm. Or the it is kind of a

[57:21] the that state of existence actually

[57:25] last about thousand years.

[57:27] It is not a very small time. Thousand

[57:30] years. Such a long time this this

[57:33] Brahmas live in these states of mind.

[57:36] It is a state of existence. But [snorts]

[57:38] after the when they reach to the end of

[57:41] the existence again they are past

[57:44] practices come back and they want to go

[57:46] to a different state of existence

[57:48] because they get fed up with that

[57:50] experience.

[57:51] That perception. That's what Buddha say.

[57:54] That's [snorts] why Lord Buddha say

[57:56] uh come to the end of craving to

[57:58] existence is one of the most important

[58:01] thing according to Buddhism.

[58:03] Buddha's teachings.

[58:05] Because people crave to experience

[58:08] whatever perception or a feeling.

[58:11] So they want to experience. They don't

[58:14] want to give up experiences.

[58:17] >> [snorts]

[58:18] >> That's why Lord Buddha inspire to see as

[58:20] all these experiences as impermanent.

[58:23] Therefore leads to suffering. Because

[58:26] when we crave to existence or the

[58:28] experience the world

[58:30] we can't experience a permanent thing.

[58:34] Always our experiences are impermanent.

[58:37] Change to different other states.

[58:39] So therefore when then we face to

[58:43] uh undesirable experiences

[58:46] unhappy experiences create unhappiness

[58:49] those experiences

[58:51] then leads to suffering.

[58:54] >> [snorts]

[58:54] >> So that's why Lord Buddha say if you

[58:55] want to

[58:57] totally liberate from suffering then you

[59:00] have to end the craving to existence,

[59:03] craving to experience.

[59:06] Have to come to an end.

[59:09] It naturally happen when you see the

[59:12] impermanence of all experiences, when

[59:14] you focus attention

[59:17] and pay attention

[59:19] on experiences,

[59:21] then you then you focus

[59:23] attention with the

[59:25] uh

[59:26] focus attention of the impermanence of

[59:29] experiences.

[59:30] So, then you see the impermanence of all

[59:33] experiences.

[59:34] Then

[59:36] you you don't want to

[59:38] be

[59:40] conscious anymore.

[59:42] So, that's how Lord Buddha say. Then it

[59:44] the craving to craving to

[59:47] >> [sighs]

[59:47] >> experience or craving to existence come

[59:49] to an end.

[59:51] In that way. So, it it don't happen when

[59:54] you are living in a sensual world with

[59:56] all the time having

[59:58] experience craving to consciousness or

[1:00:00] depend on consciousness.

[1:00:03] When you develop mind to the cessation

[1:00:05] of consciousness, then you have a

[1:00:07] option.

[1:00:08] Then you have a

[1:00:10] a clear clear-cut option. Oh, yeah.

[1:00:14] Am I choose the cessation of experience

[1:00:18] or am I

[1:00:20] go to a go back to a experience state of

[1:00:22] the the

[1:00:23] go back to experiences or the

[1:00:26] consciousness.

[1:00:28] Because the cessation of consciousness

[1:00:30] is a then they have a clear-cut way to

[1:00:33] achieve the cessation of consciousness.

[1:00:36] If a person don't know how to achieve

[1:00:38] the cessation of consciousness,

[1:00:41] so they don't have a

[1:00:43] any other option than having

[1:00:45] consciousness. Because always they are

[1:00:47] conscious. They don't know how to

[1:00:49] achieve the cessation.

[1:00:51] So, that's why Lord Buddha inspire

[1:00:53] people to achieve the full cessation.

[1:00:55] Then do then then they can clearly

[1:00:57] understand

[1:01:00] which one is valuable, which one is

[1:01:03] go to the full cessation

[1:01:05] or stay with consciousness.

[1:01:07] They have a they they have a

[1:01:10] position to weigh correctly.

[1:01:13] Otherwise, you don't have a position to

[1:01:16] the way correctly.

[1:01:19] Because you are already biased to the

[1:01:21] consciousness.

[1:01:23] >> [snorts]

[1:01:29] >> We'll just alternate with the questions

[1:01:31] in the room and the online questions.

[1:01:34] Uh thank you, Bhante. There's

[1:01:36] one question here.

[1:01:38] Does suffering burn up karmic energies

[1:01:42] and attachments to wrong views

[1:01:45] as a process to becoming empty?

[1:01:48] >> It ask ask again.

[1:01:50] >> Does suffering

[1:01:52] burn up

[1:01:53] >> Yeah.

[1:01:54] >> remove the karmic energies and

[1:01:56] attachments to wrong views

[1:01:59] as a process of becoming empty? Does the

[1:02:03] suffering help

[1:02:05] remove

[1:02:07] the karmic energies and attachments to

[1:02:09] wrong views?

[1:02:12] >> [gasps]

[1:02:14] [snorts]

[1:02:14] >> But yeah, some the the the suffering

[1:02:18] actually when you suffer

[1:02:21] the consciousness naturally try to find

[1:02:23] out

[1:02:25] the why suffer and how to escape the

[1:02:28] suffering.

[1:02:29] So, the problem is the if the if you

[1:02:33] don't know what is delusion and

[1:02:34] non-delusion

[1:02:36] so naturally you choose

[1:02:38] one way or the other to escape from the

[1:02:41] state of suffering.

[1:02:43] So, that's why

[1:02:44] very very interesting thing

[1:02:48] even the Buddha's time, the other

[1:02:50] religious leaders also actually show

[1:02:52] something actually valuable thing.

[1:02:55] Because they they they understood the

[1:02:58] suffering always associate with the

[1:03:00] sensual world. So, then we have to find

[1:03:02] out a method to escape from the

[1:03:04] sensuality.

[1:03:06] This is a little bit higher training,

[1:03:08] huh? This is not a

[1:03:09] the training like if you if you when you

[1:03:12] drink water, you get such sickness, then

[1:03:15] you have to reduce drinking water and

[1:03:16] then you can cope up with that

[1:03:18] suffering. So, not that kind of

[1:03:20] solution. This this

[1:03:23] developing mind to jhana states and

[1:03:25] liberate from suffering from the

[1:03:27] sensuality. This these things inspire

[1:03:31] the teachers in Buddha's time, other

[1:03:33] teachers.

[1:03:34] Not the Buddha.

[1:03:36] The before Buddha, even the

[1:03:39] they have that ability to teach other

[1:03:41] people to liberate mind from sensuality

[1:03:43] and

[1:03:44] bring the mind to the higher states.

[1:03:47] And the jhana states.

[1:03:49] Still, they are not liberated from all

[1:03:51] suffering. So, that's why delusion and

[1:03:54] non-delusion you have to understand

[1:03:55] based on the Buddha's teachings. Lord

[1:03:57] Buddha said delusion is the the root

[1:04:00] cause of delusion is craving to

[1:04:02] existence.

[1:04:05] Bhavatanna.

[1:04:06] When this bhavatanna come to end, you

[1:04:09] are you your crave to existence come to

[1:04:11] end in then when [clears throat] this

[1:04:13] life

[1:04:15] come to the death,

[1:04:16] there's no more craving to existence

[1:04:18] then this stream of consciousness start

[1:04:21] flowing. The start

[1:04:23] then stream of consciousness stop.

[1:04:25] That is called asavakkhaya.

[1:04:28] It come to the asavakkhaya, the shop

[1:04:32] come to the cessation of this stream of

[1:04:35] mentality and materiality.

[1:04:38] No more going to a

[1:04:40] another existence then it come to the

[1:04:42] end of suffering.

[1:04:44] >> [gasps]

[1:04:44] >> If it goes to another state of

[1:04:46] existence, some states of existences

[1:04:48] have very little suffering.

[1:04:51] That's why Lord Buddha say the different

[1:04:53] state of existences.

[1:04:55] So, when

[1:04:56] person go and reborn in a this

[1:04:59] deva realm or the go and reborn in

[1:05:02] brahma realms, these are these are

[1:05:05] no

[1:05:07] uh

[1:05:08] much suffering. They are no no no at

[1:05:10] least there is no any suffering.

[1:05:13] While they are staying in those states

[1:05:16] of existences.

[1:05:18] They come to the unhappy states when

[1:05:22] uh they reach to the end of that

[1:05:24] lifespan.

[1:05:25] It's a very long lifespans. When they

[1:05:28] reach to the end of lifespan,

[1:05:30] they are no more get happy with those

[1:05:33] experiences. Then they are past karma

[1:05:36] ripening. That means they they have done

[1:05:38] some good things in lower realms. So,

[1:05:41] they they want to go to the lower realms

[1:05:43] to to do that good things.

[1:05:46] >> [snorts]

[1:05:47] >> So, that's why they come back to the

[1:05:48] lower lower states of existences.

[1:05:51] Otherwise, they they are they don't have

[1:05:53] any suffering there.

[1:05:54] >> [snorts]

[1:05:55] >> That's what Buddha say.

[1:05:56] Even even the Buddha, when he was a

[1:05:59] alive as a human,

[1:06:01] Buddha say, attaining jhanas is sambodhi

[1:06:05] sukha.

[1:06:07] Because he temporarily liberate from all

[1:06:10] states of suffering and go to the jhana

[1:06:12] states and enjoy the jhana happiness.

[1:06:14] That's all.

[1:06:16] But

[1:06:17] uh he haven't give up life, that's why

[1:06:20] come back the human body.

[1:06:22] Until he go to parinibbana.

[1:06:26] When Bante

[1:06:29] Lord Buddha went to parinibbana, there

[1:06:31] is no more rebirth or no more existence.

[1:06:34] So, existence come to the cessation.

[1:06:37] >> [snorts]

[1:06:39] >> So, that's why end suffering.

[1:06:41] >> [gasps]

[1:06:44] >> Okay.

[1:06:44] >> Yes,

[1:06:46] thank you for the beautiful discourse.

[1:06:48] Like the whole discourse is about uh end

[1:06:51] of suffering forever.

[1:06:53] >> Yeah.

[1:06:53] >> Permanently. Nibbana.

[1:06:55] >> Mhm.

[1:06:56] >> So, you very well discussed the noble

[1:06:58] eightfold path.

[1:06:59] >> Mhm.

[1:07:00] >> You also made explained the dependent

[1:07:02] origination, how it arises with

[1:07:04] ignorance.

[1:07:06] >> [clears throat]

[1:07:06] >> But you thoroughly emphasized the jhana

[1:07:09] states.

[1:07:10] Uh that is your whole talk is on the

[1:07:13] jhanic states.

[1:07:14] And it is experience you're talking

[1:07:17] about. All experiences.

[1:07:21] My experience of non-self.

[1:07:23] Experience of impermanence, experience

[1:07:25] of suffering, but this is transient.

[1:07:27] It's only experience. But, that is not

[1:07:29] what we are at.

[1:07:31] Yes, when you experience, you will

[1:07:35] like to

[1:07:36] to further.

[1:07:38] We didn't come to that discussion yet.

[1:07:40] >> [clears throat]

[1:07:41] >> The whole story is the saddha

[1:07:44] uh viriya sila samadhi pagna. You know

[1:07:47] what that means.

[1:07:48] >> [snorts]

[1:07:48] >> So, we stopped at the level of samadhi.

[1:07:51] That is still us.

[1:07:53] We didn't go to the level of discussion

[1:07:55] of the pagna, wisdom.

[1:07:58] How does the wisdom comes?

[1:07:59] Now, there is we did not discuss about

[1:08:01] the four foundation of mindfulness.

[1:08:05] After

[1:08:06] get the develop the ability to still

[1:08:09] your mind, samadhi, then we proceed.

[1:08:13] That is the time you find the

[1:08:14] defilements.

[1:08:16] The defilements are the things that keep

[1:08:18] you in ignorance and in cycle of

[1:08:22] What is wrong part that depend on

[1:08:23] origination?

[1:08:24] So, we had to discuss that.

[1:08:26] The how to identify your defilements

[1:08:30] through practice of

[1:08:33] Then it should be practiced.

[1:08:35] Then seeing the suffering is because of

[1:08:38] those defilements.

[1:08:39] And then

[1:08:42] not to have grasping.

[1:08:44] And letting go.

[1:08:46] That is the wisdom that is required for

[1:08:48] permanent liberation. I think that test

[1:08:50] we discussing this thing.

[1:08:53] Which we did not do.

[1:08:55] We only stopped at the level of jhana,

[1:08:57] which is a temporary state.

[1:08:59] Who wants only experience? We want the

[1:09:01] result. We are stopping short of the

[1:09:03] final goal if you stop at jhana.

[1:09:07] Got it?

[1:09:08] >> Yeah.

[1:09:10] This is This is another thing. So,

[1:09:13] actually

[1:09:16] Buddha talk about this path based on

[1:09:20] cessation. Cessation is the

[1:09:22] >> [snorts]

[1:09:22] >> third noble truth.

[1:09:24] So, if people talk about wisdom

[1:09:29] before achieving the cessation,

[1:09:33] that is not real wisdom.

[1:09:35] So, that is that is the most important

[1:09:37] thing. This path is

[1:09:40] the motivation of the path. I talk about

[1:09:43] the motivation. Why we should practice

[1:09:45] the path?

[1:09:47] Lord Buddha never say in any sutra you

[1:09:50] should practice a path to achieve

[1:09:52] wisdom. Never say.

[1:09:55] Nowhere I find out in any sutra

[1:09:58] to practice a path to achieve wisdom.

[1:10:00] No. Lord Buddha say you should practice

[1:10:03] the path to achieve cessation.

[1:10:06] >> [gasps]

[1:10:06] >> When you achieve the cessation, you have

[1:10:08] the wisdom.

[1:10:10] Because

[1:10:12] when we travel to the target, we have to

[1:10:16] deal in the present moment and develop

[1:10:19] mind step by step to go to the target.

[1:10:22] So, we are targeting the cessation.

[1:10:26] So, then we have to deal with the

[1:10:29] problems arise here and now with the

[1:10:31] wisdom.

[1:10:33] That's why we first

[1:10:35] talk about the right view.

[1:10:39] And then show the target. You have to

[1:10:40] achieve the cessation. When you are

[1:10:42] going to the target, problems arise.

[1:10:46] How the problems arise? Because

[1:10:50] your eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind

[1:10:51] work based on delusion.

[1:10:54] So, then you have to rectify your your

[1:10:57] your intentions. Cut off and let go your

[1:10:59] intentions, which always based on

[1:11:01] delusion.

[1:11:03] So, you have to be wise to deal with

[1:11:07] different situations in your life when

[1:11:09] you are practicing the path.

[1:11:11] So, it it is a middle thing. You know,

[1:11:14] that's why satipatthana is important.

[1:11:16] Sati is important.

[1:11:18] The

[1:11:20] when we are practicing the path,

[1:11:23] when we are practicing sati,

[1:11:25] then

[1:11:26] >> [clears throat]

[1:11:26] >> you you have to manage

[1:11:29] your mentality and this bodily

[1:11:32] materiality, your life. You have to

[1:11:34] manage wisely by cutting off the the

[1:11:39] defilements or the craving arise within

[1:11:42] us.

[1:11:43] Because

[1:11:45] while we are live as a human, we develop

[1:11:48] mind

[1:11:49] to these higher states.

[1:11:51] >> [snorts]

[1:11:51] >> So,

[1:11:52] the for maintaining this human body, so

[1:11:55] we have to wisely deal with the world.

[1:11:59] Wisely deal with your your bodily needs.

[1:12:02] Because body is not you. It is a the the

[1:12:07] part the the the the entity run based on

[1:12:10] delusion and the the causes and

[1:12:13] conditions which are related to the

[1:12:15] life.

[1:12:16] So, your choices based on your past

[1:12:20] practices. Where are you born? Where are

[1:12:22] you lived? What you associated? So, then

[1:12:24] we have to wisely deal with these

[1:12:26] things.

[1:12:27] But that is not the target of

[1:12:30] the the this practice.

[1:12:32] If you if you think oh yeah, now I am

[1:12:35] wise to how I don't know I know how to

[1:12:38] deal with my sensual world or I I know

[1:12:40] how to deal with

[1:12:42] most of the things in this world.

[1:12:45] People think that is wisdom. No, that is

[1:12:47] delusion.

[1:12:49] >> [gasps and laughter]

[1:12:49] >> If you if you know how to

[1:12:52] liberate from this sensual world and go

[1:12:54] to the Jana state, Lord Buddha will say

[1:12:56] that is the that is wisdom.

[1:12:59] Natthi janam apannassa pannaya natthi

[1:13:02] ajayino atthi janam ca pannaya ca so ve

[1:13:04] nibbanasanniti.

[1:13:06] If a person don't have Janas, that is

[1:13:08] the highest states of mind, they don't

[1:13:10] have panna.

[1:13:11] They don't have wisdom. But these days

[1:13:14] people they describe wisdom

[1:13:16] before attaining Janas. They say oh,

[1:13:18] Jana is very dangerous. This is

[1:13:24] This is not Buddhism.

[1:13:26] >> [laughter]

[1:13:26] >> This is not Buddhism.

[1:13:31] >> [laughter]

[1:13:32] >> Buddha clearly say what is panna and

[1:13:35] what is non panna.

[1:13:37] >> [laughter]

[1:13:44] >> Thank you Bhante.

[1:13:45] There's a comment question.

[1:13:48] Dear Bhante, thank you so much.

[1:13:50] I am wondering

[1:13:52] if we [clears throat] comprehend all of

[1:13:53] these concepts using consciousness

[1:13:56] >> Mhm.

[1:13:57] >> then when we meditate, how do we let go

[1:14:01] of these same consciousnesses that we

[1:14:03] used?

[1:14:04] >> Mhm.

[1:14:05] Ask again.

[1:14:07] >> So if if we comprehend all of these

[1:14:10] concepts using consciousness

[1:14:13] we understand everything you're talking

[1:14:14] about with our conscious mind

[1:14:16] >> Mhm.

[1:14:17] >> when we meditate, how do we let go of

[1:14:19] that same consciousness that is

[1:14:21] understanding?

[1:14:23] >> [snorts]

[1:14:23] >> Yeah, the actually first we understand

[1:14:26] what is really happening, but

[1:14:29] the understanding is just at the

[1:14:31] beginning. These are just words.

[1:14:34] But we have to

[1:14:35] deal with our mentality. We have to

[1:14:37] identify mentality.

[1:14:39] So it is a part of that that is called

[1:14:42] this is a gradual wisdom growing. That's

[1:14:44] why

[1:14:45] if we talk about these things too much,

[1:14:47] you are attached to this or this is my

[1:14:49] wisdom, that is my wisdom, gain

[1:14:51] delusion.

[1:14:52] >> [laughter]

[1:14:53] >> If you That's why That's why Buddha

[1:14:55] never talk about these things too much,

[1:14:58] but you have to do it. Be because

[1:15:02] first you know only the words, then you

[1:15:04] have to investigate. That's why Lord

[1:15:06] Buddha say samude damanu pasia viharati

[1:15:08] the satipatthana is very important

[1:15:11] to understand this dhamma within your

[1:15:15] body and mind.

[1:15:17] So that is that is that is that is why

[1:15:18] satipatthana come before attaining

[1:15:21] jhanas.

[1:15:22] Without satipatthana, you don't attain

[1:15:24] jhanas anyways.

[1:15:26] >> [laughter]

[1:15:27] >> Because satipatthana develop the wisdom

[1:15:30] gradually and achieve the cessation.

[1:15:32] When you achieve the cessation, you have

[1:15:34] the wisdom. If you don't achieve

[1:15:36] cessation, you don't have wisdom. Still

[1:15:38] you are deluded.

[1:15:39] >> [laughter]

[1:15:40] >> So that that is the most important thing

[1:15:42] we have to understand.

[1:15:43] >> [gasps]

[1:15:43] >> So

[1:15:45] letting go by understanding things arise

[1:15:48] and pass away. You have to watch and see

[1:15:51] and understand. This is not just words.

[1:15:54] This is a reality. You should achieve

[1:15:56] the reality within your body and mind.

[1:15:59] Cessation you have to achieve.

[1:16:02] As a reality. It is not just a word.

[1:16:06] So that's why it's very important to

[1:16:08] understand.

[1:16:10] First you have you get the concepts.

[1:16:13] So very interesting. If you read

[1:16:15] Ariyapariyesana Sutta,

[1:16:17] even the Buddha, before become Buddha,

[1:16:19] when he was a Bodhisatta, first he went

[1:16:22] to Alara

[1:16:23] Kalama.

[1:16:24] What he learn?

[1:16:26] He learn that that teaching and

[1:16:29] >> [clears throat]

[1:16:29] >> uh learn by heart and recite by heart.

[1:16:33] Then

[1:16:34] they they accept him as a Oh yeah, he's

[1:16:37] an out there. He's a person who can

[1:16:40] uh

[1:16:41] recite the whole thing

[1:16:43] by heart. And now he had he came to a

[1:16:46] certain level.

[1:16:48] But

[1:16:49] he then he asked,

[1:16:51] "Is it Are you

[1:16:53] directly experience these things and

[1:16:55] achieve these things and come to this

[1:16:57] state?"

[1:16:58] Then say, "Yes. Yes, we have to do it."

[1:17:00] So then he practice and he directly come

[1:17:04] to direct experience, Alara Kalama's

[1:17:06] level.

[1:17:08] He develop mind. That means he It is

[1:17:11] panna.

[1:17:12] He develop mind to the the

[1:17:14] Akincannayatana, the the immaterial

[1:17:17] jhana realm.

[1:17:19] And he he come to the same experience.

[1:17:24] And he can describe as Alara Kalama.

[1:17:28] So then Alara Kalama uh the invited uh

[1:17:31] the the Bodhisatta,

[1:17:33] "Okay, now you are equal to me. We can

[1:17:36] share the the students and

[1:17:40] two different things.

[1:17:41] In many [snorts] suttas, Buddha

[1:17:43] explained

[1:17:45] uh

[1:17:46] saccanubodha saccanupatti.

[1:17:49] Anubodha pativedha. These two words

[1:17:52] Buddha used. First, you listen

[1:17:55] and carefully investigate within your

[1:17:57] body and mind and understand

[1:18:01] what is this and what how it

[1:18:04] relate to our life.

[1:18:06] And then, you start practicing and

[1:18:09] develop mind on the path. Then, you

[1:18:11] gradually get rid of all the delusion

[1:18:13] deluded mentality

[1:18:16] and [snorts] liberate your mind from the

[1:18:17] sensuality. It is a It is a process. You

[1:18:20] have to practice. That is That is the

[1:18:22] meaning of satipatthana.

[1:18:24] When satipatthana practicing, actually,

[1:18:26] they develop the wisdom, but it is a the

[1:18:29] path to develop the wisdom.

[1:18:33] If you properly develop the wisdom, then

[1:18:36] you achieve the cessation. Without

[1:18:38] achieving cessation, if you claim you

[1:18:41] develop the wisdom, that is delusion.

[1:18:45] That is the important thing to

[1:18:46] understand because that's why I told

[1:18:49] now people

[1:18:50] wrongly interpret these things.

[1:18:53] >> [snorts]

[1:18:54] >> Without achieving cessation, they they

[1:18:56] talk about

[1:18:57] the

[1:18:58] this is wisdom.

[1:19:00] They still still they are they they

[1:19:03] can't let go the sensual world. They are

[1:19:05] still attached to the sensual world.

[1:19:07] They say, "Ah, no need to go to jhanas."

[1:19:09] Wrong.

[1:19:10] Lord Buddha say, "You You get fully

[1:19:12] released from the sensuality means you

[1:19:14] are going to jhana." That is called the

[1:19:16] the ending of five hindrances.

[1:19:22] So, that's why this process actually

[1:19:24] this satipatthana is the the most

[1:19:26] essential thing. That is the most

[1:19:27] closest thing to the jhanas. Without

[1:19:31] practicing satipatthana, you can't

[1:19:33] achieve the the the jhana states.

[1:19:35] That means you should understand the

[1:19:37] mentality which hinder mind going to the

[1:19:40] the full liberation from the sensuality.

[1:19:43] There is a at a how your mind attached

[1:19:45] to the sensuality.

[1:19:47] You have to mindfully understand and cut

[1:19:50] off those attachments. Then your mind

[1:19:52] get liberated from the sensuality and go

[1:19:54] to the non-sensuality.

[1:19:56] Until you go to the non-sensuality, you

[1:19:58] don't know

[1:20:00] whether you are within sensuality or

[1:20:01] not.

[1:20:03] Because your mind is still wander among

[1:20:05] the sensual world objects.

[1:20:08] >> [laughter]

[1:20:09] >> What about the yogis who are

[1:20:11] kind of attained with the jhanas, but

[1:20:12] they are with the other states?

[1:20:14] >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's

[1:20:15] >> But they they are not liberated.

[1:20:16] >> No, no, they are No, no.

[1:20:18] >> But they they attained the jhanas.

[1:20:20] >> No, no, that is wrong.

[1:20:22] That is wrong. They are liberated. When

[1:20:24] they attain jhanas, they are liberated

[1:20:26] only mindly.

[1:20:28] Not wisdom. That is a panna vimutti ceto

[1:20:30] vimutti. They are are two different

[1:20:32] things.

[1:20:33] They achieve the ceto vimutti, but they

[1:20:35] don't achieve the panna vimutti. That is

[1:20:37] the problem.

[1:20:38] Because they are not

[1:20:40] liberated from existences.

[1:20:44] They are crave to the existence. So,

[1:20:46] therefore, they go in samsara. They

[1:20:48] don't do not liberate from all

[1:20:49] suffering.

[1:20:50] But they temporarily liberated from

[1:20:52] suffering from the sensuality. That is

[1:20:55] it is a temporary liberation.

[1:20:57] So, but

[1:20:59] you have to experience that liberation.

[1:21:01] Otherwise, you don't know how to

[1:21:02] liberate from the sensuality. That means

[1:21:04] you are still trapped to the the

[1:21:06] delusion.

[1:21:08] >> [laughter]

[1:21:12] >> All right, thanks, Ajahn. You You're

[1:21:13] certainly fired up after the vassa.

[1:21:15] That's one thing for sure.

[1:21:17] >> [laughter]

[1:21:18] >> A little a little bit of little bit of

[1:21:20] editing to do there, Lang didn't okay?

[1:21:23] All right. Um so, that's the end of the

[1:21:25] talk. Thanks, Ajahn, for coming in

[1:21:26] today. A couple of announcements for

[1:21:28] everyone here. So, um

[1:21:31] Uh for the in terms of the our special

[1:21:34] general meeting that we ran last week.

[1:21:36] So, thanks to the community members who

[1:21:39] joined the um joined the SGM last week

[1:21:41] and also

[1:21:42] um the um um the AV team. So, thanks to

[1:21:46] the AV team for coming in to support the

[1:21:48] running of that meeting. And also the

[1:21:50] building subcommittee for their efforts

[1:21:52] in the underlying projects. So, we had

[1:21:55] uh three motions that were passed. Um

[1:21:58] they were relating to upgrading the

[1:21:59] septic system at SOS at a retreat

[1:22:02] center.

[1:22:03] Um designing and building of the

[1:22:05] meditation meditation hall and also some

[1:22:08] design activities for the redevelopment

[1:22:10] of the nuns area.

[1:22:11] So, thank you to everyone who

[1:22:13] participated in that.

[1:22:15] Also, for our gratitude day, we had a

[1:22:17] gratitude day for everyone who does all

[1:22:19] of the work for making this place run uh

[1:22:22] here as well as um everything over in

[1:22:24] Newbury.

[1:22:25] So, um uh without without them,

[1:22:29] we would be nothing, actually. So, we're

[1:22:30] very grateful to everyone everyone who

[1:22:33] put in the effort um to to make that

[1:22:35] event happen and for everyone to come

[1:22:37] and participate in that.

[1:22:38] So, the next event that we've got up and

[1:22:41] that's happening is cutting a robe

[1:22:43] offering ceremony. So, that's going to

[1:22:44] be happening on Sunday, the 15th of

[1:22:46] November from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at

[1:22:49] Newbury. Um you if you could check if

[1:22:52] you are interested in coming, you can

[1:22:54] check the newsletter uh which was sent

[1:22:56] on uh Friday, the 16th of October. That

[1:22:58] was a special newsletter that was sent

[1:23:00] out and also you could go to for more

[1:23:02] details on that. There is a bus

[1:23:07] um I think there are tickets still

[1:23:09] available for if you do if you don't

[1:23:11] have trans- transportation, you can um

[1:23:13] there's bus ticket uh you can grab a bus

[1:23:15] ticket for that one.

[1:23:18] Okay. So, the monthly lay discussion

[1:23:20] which which runs on the first Sunday of

[1:23:22] the month, that's running today. So, Dr.

[1:23:24] Jaya, you can

[1:23:26] Yeah, we can we can still have it. Um

[1:23:28] it it is competing with something else

[1:23:29] which I'll come into in the in in a

[1:23:31] moment. So, that's to discuss thing you

[1:23:34] know, discuss things relating to um

[1:23:37] let It's effectively lay lay discussion.

[1:23:40] Yeah, we can continue on this discussion

[1:23:42] for those who that will um that are

[1:23:44] interested and that and Dr. Jayasekara

[1:23:46] will will facilitate that one.

[1:23:49] Also, it's competing with the

[1:23:51] Kalyanamitta cleaning day because last

[1:23:53] week we we weren't able to run the

[1:23:54] Kalyanamitta cleaning day because it's

[1:23:57] it was the the SGM. So, we would

[1:23:59] appreciate some people coming to to help

[1:24:02] out with that particularly in the

[1:24:03] garden. If you've gone out there, the

[1:24:04] grass has just gone absolutely wild. So,

[1:24:08] we would appreciate some help with

[1:24:09] people

[1:24:11] in the maintenance of inside and

[1:24:13] outside.

[1:24:15] Also, in terms of retreats, Bhante Bodhi

[1:24:17] and Bhante Chunda, their retreat at the

[1:24:19] retreat center will be on from the 27th

[1:24:21] of November to the 2nd of December and

[1:24:23] registrations are now open for that.

[1:24:26] Tomorrow night, Ajahn, you're going to

[1:24:28] do the the

[1:24:30] Monday night meditation here 7:30 at

[1:24:33] 7:30 p.m.

[1:24:35] And also

[1:24:37] for next

[1:24:39] next week's teaching program, uh

[1:24:41] Saturday uh Saturday

[1:24:44] monthly retreat, that'll be Bhante Joe.

[1:24:46] Now, Bhante Joe is struggling with with

[1:24:49] his energy levels at the moment, so

[1:24:50] there may be a change to the program

[1:24:53] with another member of the Sangha

[1:24:54] stepping in for for all or part of the

[1:24:56] program. So, please check the website

[1:24:59] for details on any updates on that one.

[1:25:03] So, if you are planning to come for that

[1:25:04] one, it's between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

[1:25:08] and if you can bring make your own lunch

[1:25:10] arrangements and tea and coffee will be

[1:25:12] available throughout the day.

[1:25:14] Uh next Sunday will be Bhante Joe and

[1:25:16] Monday night meditation will also be

[1:25:18] Bhante Joe. That's it for announcements.

[1:25:20] Thank you very much, Ajahn, for giving

[1:25:22] us the Dhamma talk. The pinapata

[1:25:25] and lunch community lunch is over there

[1:25:27] for starting at 11:00 a.m. And we'll let

[1:25:29] Ajahn close and we will wait for Ajahn

[1:25:32] to leave before we

[1:25:35] we disperse, okay? Thank you.

[1:25:38] >> Okay, now we can pay respect to Buddha,

[1:25:40] Dhamma, Sangha.

[1:25:47] >> [snorts]

Right view is the first factor of the path and the one from which the others take their purpose. In this talk, the teacher explains that it means seeing the world without falling into delusion, which requires examining how consciousness naturally perceives things as permanent and reliable.
The teacher says that according to the Buddha's teaching, delusion is part of all existence and all consciousness. He asks listeners to observe that experiences arise and are treated as fixed and certain, rather than recognised as impermanent, which he calls a natural flow common to all beings.
Anicca saññā is the perception of impermanence, which the talk sets against the default habit of perceiving the impermanent as permanent. The teacher presents it, alongside dukkha saññā and anatta saññā, as one of the right perceptions to develop and practise in daily life to correct a wrong view.
The teacher argues that practising only one or two factors without understanding the path's purpose has little meaning. He says that purpose arises from right view, so seeing clearly comes first and shapes how every other factor is practised.
The eight factors are traditionally grouped into wisdom (right view and right intention), ethics (right speech, right action and right livelihood), and concentration (right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration). The talk focuses on the wisdom group, especially right view, and then moves toward right intention and the eighth factor.
Satipatthana means the foundations of mindfulness, a central practice in the Theravada tradition. In this talk the teacher returns to it late in the session and links it to the distinction between liberation through wisdom and liberation of mind, though the captions of that passage are hard to follow.
