Somewhere in the first minute of an eleven-minute video published in January 2024, a midlife woman is asked whether she feels disconnected despite a life that looks complete from the outside. The speaker, Jen, founder and owner of Laughing Lotus Wellness, is a transformational coach who spent more than twenty years as a clinician in social work and psychology before moving into coaching. Her video, titled "BOLD: How to BE BOLD in MIdlife," is built around a single word she chose as her word of the year, and it lays out five steps for acting on it: get clear about what you want, ask for it without apology, be honest and authentic, listen to what your body is telling you, and pay attention to the people around you. She frames all of this not as a productivity plan but as recalibration, a deliberate turn away from old patterns that no longer fit. What follows explains those steps and the reasoning underneath them, so the ideas hold up for readers who have not watched.

Why does a successful midlife woman still feel disconnected?

The video opens by naming a feeling many women in their forties and fifties will recognize. "Are you a midlife woman and you're wondering if there isn't more to life than the one that you're living right now," Jen asks at the start (0:01). "You are super successful, you've done all the things," she continues, and yet "you somehow feel disconnected, like there's something that might be missing or you're being called to do something different."

Her own story is the evidence she offers. Around age forty, she says, she had a private practice, a family, a job, and "all the things." It was not that she was living large, she clarifies, but she had a good life and was "absolutely miserable" (1:07). She describes feeling broken, thinking her purpose was to help people while feeling stuck inside the work that was supposed to express it. What she found was that she had not really known her purpose. She had believed she did, but it lacked "depth to it that anchored me in."

That distinction, between a full calendar and a purpose with real anchoring, is the core of her argument. Her coaching, she explains, is aimed at helping women reconfigure, recalibrate, and then revolutionize the experience they are having of midlife. She contrasts that with the familiar script of the "midlife crisis," saying a midlife season can feel "more celebratory than like a crisis" (0:44). The reframe matters because it changes what a woman does next: instead of enduring a breakdown, she treats the moment as a chance to adjust course on purpose.

What does "bold" actually mean in midlife?

Jen says the word took "quite some time to land" for her (2:17). She is candid that it is not a permanent identity: "this is my word of the year which will not always be my word of the year." For this year, though, it stands for something concrete. "What I really wanted to do was live audaciously this year," she says. In practice that meant to "stop asking permission, stop apologizing, stop doubting yourself, stop those old behaviors," and to ask herself why she was repeating patterns that no longer worked.

There is a practical test underneath this. Jen argues that alignment is recognizable by how it feels: "it'll feel juicy, it'll feel beautiful, it'll feel easier, it'll feel like a flow." Discomfort becomes information. If something feels heavy and forced, that is a signal about the direction you are going, not proof that you lack discipline. Boldness, in this framing, is less about volume or aggression than about being willing to act on what you already know.

Step one: Why does clarity come before courage?

The first step is to be clear about what you want. "If you aren't clear you can't ask clearly for what you want," Jen says at the top of the list (3:10). She describes the alternative with some humor: a vague request is "like screaming to the universe with a big old me megaphone saying I'll take whatever you want to give me," and she is blunt that this is "probably not super successful."

The logic is that a precise desire gives you a direction to move in. Once you know what you want, you can move "more boldly" toward it, because you are no longer spending energy on a fog of possibilities. Clarity is not a one-time decision, either. It is the foundation for every step that follows, since each of them depends on being able to name the thing you are reaching for.

Step two: How do you ask without apologizing?

The second step is to be brave enough to ask. Jen gives examples in the first person: "hey, can I join that," "hey, can I start that," "I want to begin this next journey of my life." She is specific about the midlife dimension of this. She describes a journey she had carried in her heart "for years and years" but did not have time for while raising children, and she notes that now that she is an empty nester, she has more room to pursue it. Asking, in other words, is partly about recognizing that your circumstances have changed.

She also takes on fear of refusal directly. "Even if you feel a little afraid to ask, know that no isn't going to hurt you. You're going to be okay." Her point is that most of us have heard "no" many times and survived it, and that persistence depends on being willing to keep the momentum moving after a refusal. She adds a line that reframes the outcome entirely:

"Sometimes a no is a blessing in disguise, let's be honest." (Jen, in her video published January 2024, around 4:04)

Step three: Why does honesty matter more than polish?

The third step is to be honest and authentic, which Jen calls "a huge, huge move" for being bold. Her confession here is one of the more interesting moments in the video. She had become "so in a habit of checking boxes" that she "stopped feeling authentic when I showed up." She was not saying things she disagreed with, she clarifies, but she was not in the energy of "seeing it the way that I wanted to." That realization led her to step back from parts of her business for a time to recalibrate how she wanted to show up.

Her standard is simple: "I don't want to just talk to talk." She is wary of "getting stuff out there to get stuff out there," and she extends the same standard to listeners, inviting them to be honest "with your own voice about where you are, what you need, how you want to do that." Notably, she says authenticity earns her respect even when she disagrees with someone:

"I don't even have to agree with somebody. I always appreciate authenticity, even when I don't agree. I can respect it, it might not be my jam." (Jen, in her video published January 2024, around 6:00)

For a midlife audience, the implication is that the years of performing competence can make it harder to speak plainly. Boldness in this step means letting your actual voice be the one people hear.

Step four: What is your body trying to tell you?

The fourth step, which Jen calls embodying your experience, asks you to listen to your body. Her list of signals is specific: a tight, constricted feeling; breath that becomes shallow or gets held; tightness or stuck feeling in the throat; tension in the belly or the gut space; shoulders and neck that go tense. "Our bodies are always talking to us," she says, and in a busy culture "we sometimes don't listen. We forget."

Her practical tool is a question she calls the "hell yes" test: "Is my body like a hell yes? If it's not a hell yes, then it's a no." She treats this as a working rule rather than a slogan. The practice she describes is to pause, take a breath, and ask "what am I noticing?" The answer might be, in her words, "my body says that feels pretty freaking good," or "my body says no thanks." Either response is useful data. The goal is not to override the body with a rational argument but to let it inform the decision.

It is worth being precise about the scope of this claim. Jen is not offering a medical framework; she is describing a habit of attention that many people, especially those who have spent decades in demanding roles, have lost. Within that frame, the body becomes an early warning system for choices that look right on paper but feel wrong in practice.

Step five: Who do you surround yourself with?

The fifth step, which appears in the last third of the video, turns outward to the people in your life. Jen says that "network is so vital" and that the people who meet you where you are matter. She talks about finding people who share a "matching vibration," and about valuing people who offer a different tact, approach, or perspective, which she says is "always going to help us grow." The transcript for this section is partly fragmentary, so it is best to read her emphasis as a general invitation to be deliberate about your circle rather than as a detailed method.

Her closing segments return to the same theme, asking viewers to think about who is around them and whether those people support their growth. Read together with the earlier steps, this one completes a loop. Clarity tells you what you want, courage lets you ask for it, honesty lets you show up as yourself, the body tells you whether a choice is right, and the people around you determine whether you keep moving.

How do the five steps work together?

What makes Jen's approach distinctive is that it refuses to separate the inner and outer work. A midlife woman who is clear about her goals but silent about her needs will stall. One who speaks boldly but ignores her body's signals will burn out. And one who has courage but no network may find herself alone when a "no" arrives. The video's five steps are best understood as a single practice seen from five angles.

Jen closes by inviting viewers into further conversation, pointing to her email list and free resources. The most useful takeaway from the video, though, does not depend on any of that. It is a set of questions a reader can ask herself: What do I actually want, stated clearly? What am I afraid to ask for? Where am I performing rather than speaking? What does my body say when I imagine the next step? And who is in my corner?

Where to go from here

If this framework resonates, start small. Watch the original video on the Laughing Lotus Wellness channel to hear Jen's full delivery and tone, since much of her meaning lives in her warmth and examples. Then try two exercises over the next week. First, write one sentence describing exactly what you want in the coming year, without qualifiers. Second, run the "hell yes" test on a single decision and notice what your body says before your mind has finished arguing. Boldness, as Jen frames it, is not a dramatic leap. It is a series of honest, specific choices, made one at a time, by a woman who has decided that midlife is a season to recalibrate on purpose.

[0:01] are you a midlife woman and you're

[0:03] wondering if there isn't more to life

[0:05] than the one that you're living right

[0:06] now you are super successful you've done

[0:09] all the things you have all these

[0:10] beautiful layers to your life and yet

[0:12] you somehow feel disconnected like

[0:15] there's something that might be missing

[0:17] or you're being called to do something

[0:19] different and if that's you then hang

[0:20] tight with me hi my name is Jen I'm the

[0:22] founder and owner of laughing Lotus

[0:23] wellness and I'm a transformational

[0:26] coach that helps midlife women really

[0:28] tap into their power and reconnect and

[0:31] re-calibrate their experience of having

[0:34] a midlife season that feels more

[0:38] celebratory than like a crisis right

[0:40] because how many times do we hear about

[0:42] midlife crisis there's so much more to

[0:44] life than seeing it through that lens so

[0:47] the way that I kind of turned on to this

[0:49] whole notion of midlife recalibration

[0:51] and revolution is that I was 40 and I

[0:54] went through a whole minute had a

[0:56] private practice had it all had the

[0:58] family had the job had the you know all

[1:00] the things things right and it wasn't

[1:01] that I was like you know living large

[1:04] right but I had a really good life and I

[1:07] was absolutely miserable and so what

[1:09] happened as a clinician of 20 plus years

[1:12] now I really did go through a period of

[1:15] time where I felt broken I was like

[1:16] something is deeply wrong like I thought

[1:18] my purpose was to help people I'm here

[1:19] and I'm stuck and I'm trying to do this

[1:20] thing and like how do I not feel

[1:22] connected to this and what really ended

[1:24] up happening was I discovered I really

[1:25] didn't know my purpose I kind of thought

[1:27] I did but I didn't have depth to it that

[1:30] anchored me in if that makes sense since

[1:32] that's oftentimes what I'm helping women

[1:34] do reconfigure recalibrate and then

[1:36] revolutionize experience they're having

[1:38] through my experience to start right my

[1:41] story that wisdom and that Journey that

[1:43] I had to go through and bringing women

[1:45] up to speed in away that they don't have

[1:47] to feel powerless and broken like I did

[1:50] so I have a ton of background in the

[1:52] field of Social Work and psychology

[1:54] that's 20 plus years of doing that kind

[1:56] of really traditional private practice

[1:58] and I'm certified in numerous healing

[1:59] modalities all of which I pull forward

[2:01] to create a really cool coaching

[2:03] experience that's a little bit like a

[2:05] Choose Your Own Adventure if you will uh

[2:07] and what we do is we get together we

[2:08] kind of figure out where you're going to

[2:10] go and how you're going to do it and so

[2:12] this is really my passion today we're

[2:13] going to be talking about being bold so

[2:17] I this is my word of the year which will

[2:19] not always be my word of the year right

[2:21] this is a special deal it took me quite

[2:23] some time to land in it and the reason

[2:25] that I love this idea is it's about

[2:27] really living the life that you want to

[2:29] live it's really being being completely

[2:31] connected to the energy the experience

[2:33] and the Vitality that we all get to

[2:35] bring to the table and to me what I

[2:38] really wanted to do was live audaciously

[2:40] this year right it was like okay stop

[2:42] asking permission stop apologizing stop

[2:45] doubting yourself stop those old

[2:47] behaviors those old old patterns that

[2:49] don't serve anymore right I'm like why

[2:50] am I doing this if I don't feel good

[2:52] this isn't working and I know better

[2:54] because I know that alignment will feel

[2:56] juicy it'll feel beautiful it'll feel

[2:58] easier it'll feel like a flow

[3:01] and so living bold this year that's my

[3:04] word but we're going to talk about what

[3:05] that means in midlife so some steps to

[3:08] take I've got one two three four five

[3:10] five steps here we go number one be

[3:12] clear on what you want if you aren't

[3:15] clear you can't ask clearly for what you

[3:17] want and it's like screaming to the

[3:18] universe with a big old me megaphone

[3:20] saying I'll take whatever you want to

[3:22] give me probably not super successful so

[3:24] the clearer that you are about what you

[3:26] want allows you to more boldly move in

[3:28] that direction right so being super

[3:30] super clear about what you want the next

[3:32] one is be brave enough to ask for it be

[3:34] brave enough to say hey can I join that

[3:37] hey can I start that hey I'm going to

[3:38] start this new class or certification or

[3:40] hey I want to begin this next journey of

[3:44] my life my midlife Journey that I I was

[3:47] on my heart for years and years and I

[3:49] didn't have the time because maybe I had

[3:50] kids and now they're I'm an empty nester

[3:53] and I actually have more time again

[3:54] right it can look like so many things

[3:56] like it just empowering yourself to

[3:59] Brave move in to declaring what it is

[4:02] that you want and being completely

[4:04] unafraid of asking and even if you feel

[4:07] a little afraid to ask know that no

[4:10] isn't going to it's not going to hurt

[4:11] you you're going to be okay how many

[4:13] times in my life have we heard no and

[4:16] yet we know that it's important to keep

[4:18] that momentum moving right and sometimes

[4:21] a no is a blessing in disguise let's be

[4:23] honest but I just want to say don't be

[4:25] afraid to ask be bold enough and Brash

[4:27] enough and audacious enough to just say

[4:29] hey I'd really like to do that I'd like

[4:31] to join with you hey I'd like to you

[4:33] know try this new job or I'd like this

[4:35] you know beautiful um bump in my career

[4:38] because I feel like I would be better

[4:39] suited in this way do not be afraid to

[4:42] ask for what you want so I need to

[4:44] bravely do that the next one's be honest

[4:46] and authentic listen there's so many

[4:48] people out there spouting stuff right I

[4:50] mean we've all heard it I hear it you

[4:52] hear it it's and I get it okay one of

[4:55] the things that I'm going to be honest

[4:56] has been an interesting uh shift for me

[5:00] is that I just was so in a habit of

[5:03] checking boxes that I stopped feeling

[5:05] authentic when I showed up it wasn't

[5:06] that I wasn't saying things I didn't

[5:08] believe but I wasn't in the energy of

[5:10] seeing it the way that I wanted to and

[5:13] that's actually one of the big reasons I

[5:15] kind of took a big step back in my

[5:17] business for a minute was to recalibrate

[5:19] this idea how do I really want to show

[5:21] up I don't want to just talk to talk I

[5:24] don't want to do that there's a world

[5:26] full of all of that kind of stuff right

[5:30] I really wanted to show up much more

[5:31] authentically and in my own vibration

[5:34] that felt in alignment versus just

[5:36] getting stuff out there to get stuff out

[5:37] there so I'm going to invite you to be

[5:40] honest to be brave and bold enough to be

[5:44] honest with your own voice about where

[5:46] you are what you need how you want to do

[5:49] that to me there is something so

[5:51] beautiful about someone willing to be

[5:53] real and I will say this too I don't

[5:55] even have to agree with somebody I

[5:58] always appreciate authenticity even even

[6:00] when I don't agree I can respect it

[6:01] might not be my jam right I can always

[6:04] get down with someone who's real I'll

[6:06] take that any day over some

[6:08] artist right I'm much more in tune with

[6:10] somebody who's going to say it like it

[6:11] is that's the way that I'm wired and

[6:13] that's who I really like to work with so

[6:14] for me be honest and authentic huge huge

[6:17] move for being bold in your year um be

[6:19] able to notice what feels good in your

[6:21] body right so what I one of the steps

[6:24] that I think is really important is

[6:26] embodying our experiences meaning we

[6:28] listen and have a awareness about what

[6:30] is showing up in our bodies uh you will

[6:33] know if something's not working if you

[6:35] feel tight and constricted if your

[6:37] breast starts getting shallow if you

[6:39] hold your breath if you feel tightness

[6:41] or stuck in your throat you might feel a

[6:44] tightness or tension in your belly um

[6:46] you might feel it in your midsection

[6:48] that gut space you might notice your

[6:50] shoulders are tense your neck gets Tense

[6:52] one of the things that H is happening is

[6:54] our bodies are always talking to us and

[6:56] we are so busy in our culture and our

[6:58] world doing things that we sometimes

[7:00] don't listen we forget so what I want

[7:02] you to really start doing is honoring

[7:04] and witnessing where your body is is my

[7:06] body feeling is my body like a hell yes

[7:07] is this a hell yes if it's not a hell

[7:09] yes then it's a no news for you if it's

[7:11] not a hell yes it's a no um and so

[7:14] listening to that leaning into okay P

[7:16] pausing take a breath what am I noticing

[7:18] huh okay cool this is where I'm at today

[7:20] my body says that feels pretty freaking

[7:22] good or my body says no

[7:25] thanks try leaning into that okay it's

[7:28] going to allow you to be bolder because

[7:29] when it's hell yes there is a definite a

[7:32] definite and defined energy that's

[7:34] completely different than when we were

[7:36] like waffle right they feel totally

[7:38] different one is like totally inspired

[7:40] motivated moving forward momentum

[7:42] beautiful fire and the other kind of

[7:44] like snoozy right who wants that no one

[7:47] wants that so we want to be paying

[7:49] attention to our bodies our bodies are

[7:50] great tools to listen to um be connected

[7:53] with resources that help you live

[7:57] boldly we we need people I I I could say

[7:59] say this till the cows come home which I

[8:01] won't I'm just going to say that

[8:03] accountability and connection and

[8:04] network is so vital the people who meet

[8:09] us where we are are literally our best

[8:12] resources they're our best cheerleaders

[8:14] our support network our safety net

[8:16] whatever you want to call it that when

[8:18] we find people that they don't have to

[8:20] be doing the same thing we are they

[8:21] don't have to be the same kind of

[8:23] personality or have the same kind of

[8:24] traits for you what they do need to do

[8:26] is have that matching vibration of

[8:28] movement and that they want to show up

[8:31] in a bold way right so this is really

[8:32] what we're after we're really after

[8:34] finding people that challenge us that

[8:37] help us grow if we have people that say

[8:39] all the same things we do how much are

[8:41] we likely to grow either though right so

[8:45] so what we really want is to find people

[8:47] who actually have a little bit of a

[8:48] different tact or approach or

[8:50] perspective to me networking Community

In her video, Jen lays out five steps: be clear about what you want, be brave enough to ask for it, be honest and authentic, listen to what your body is telling you, and be deliberate about the people you surround yourself with. She presents them as connected parts of one recalibration process rather than separate tasks.
For Jen, being bold means living audaciously: stopping the habits of asking permission, apologizing, and doubting yourself. She says alignment shows up as something that feels easier and more like flow, so boldness includes acting on what you already know rather than repeating patterns that no longer serve you.
Jen suggests asking whether your body feels like a 'hell yes' about a choice. If it does not, she says, it is a no. The practice is to pause, take a breath, notice what your body is saying, and let that inform the decision rather than overriding it with logic alone.
Jen describes the experience of having a full, accomplished life while feeling miserable and stuck. In her own case, she realized she had not truly understood her purpose and that her sense of it lacked the depth needed to anchor her. She treats that gap, rather than any external failure, as the source of the disconnection.
Jen argues that vague desires lead to vague results, and that clarity gives you a direction to move in with more boldness. She says you cannot ask clearly for what you want until you are precise about it. Her emphasis is on specificity before action.
Jen recommends simply asking, using direct phrases like 'can I join that' or 'can I start that,' even when you feel afraid. She reminds listeners that a no will not hurt them and that a refusal is sometimes a blessing in disguise. Her point is that persistence after a no keeps momentum moving.
Jen rejects the framing of midlife as crisis and describes it as a season that can feel more celebratory. She treats the stage as an opportunity to recalibrate and revolutionize how you live, rather than a period to simply endure.
