Sherry Shieh is an award-winning pianist and composer. At the age of twelve she was presented to Prince Philip of England in recognition of her outstanding musical achievement, and she later performed at Audrey Hepburn's memorial service in 1993. She went on to work under Academy Award-winning composer Luis Bacalov (Il Postino, Kill Bill). She has received two major nominations for Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards, released six albums, and was named a Featured Lifetime Artist by the music licensing platform AudioSparx.
Her studies took her to Indiana University, where she worked with the pedagogues Jean Louis Haguenauer and Vladimir Viardo, and she was the youngest Ph.D. student of pianist Anthony di Bonaventura.
In recent years Shieh has turned toward meditation music through her DRIM project. She is also a filmmaker, author and arts advocate. Her self-written, directed and produced documentary The Book House premiered in 2016. Her book In Love with Film Music debuted at No. 1 in Taiwan's Arts category in 2023. In 2024 she premiered her original works Three Visions of an Oriental Bird and Dynasty at Taiwan's National Concert Hall.
Shieh is also an educator in music and film. She presents seminar-concerts at universities, corporations and international organizations, and she wrote for MUZIK magazine from 2006 to 2012. Audiences describe her lectures and performances as "thought-provoking, deeply moving, and refreshingly down-to-earth."
Her public service runs through the Rotary Club of Taipei, where she served as Honorary Secretary and Vice President. Her projects include Dear Violin!, which delivered 88 handmade violins to children in underserved communities worldwide, and the Blind Youth Violinist Project with Myanmar and the British Council. She organized the COVID-19 relief concert Heal New York with Love, which led to her being named an Honorary Rotarian of the Rotary Club of New York and receiving the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Worth Knowing
Sherry Shieh is a pianist, composer, author and filmmaker whose career runs from an early public honor to a recent focus on meditation music. At twelve she was presented to Prince Philip of England for outstanding musical achievement, and at the 1993 memorial service for Audrey Hepburn she performed. She later worked under Academy Award-winning composer Luis Bacalov, whose film credits include Il Postino and Kill Bill, and that cinematic training sits alongside her classical conservatory background. Her most recent strand is the DRIM project, which carries her piano and composition work into meditation music. Film-music readers tend to arrive through her book In Love with Film Music, which debuted at No. 1 in Taiwan’s Arts category in 2023. People follow her because she moves between concert premieres, documentary filmmaking, scoring, seminar-concerts and public service, and few artists in the meditation space keep all of those active at once.
