Jon Brooks is a writer, meditation teacher and practitioner, and the founder of The Stoic Handbook. He is based in Wales, UK. His work is about the gap between knowing how you want to live and actually living that way.
He describes himself as a dad, a writer and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. He spends much of his time thinking about how we learn, and why a good idea can be so hard to use when we need it. Meditation and psychology have shaped how he thinks about practical philosophy. He began working with HighExistence in 2015, and today most of his writing and teaching lives in The Stoic Handbook.
By his own account, he has spent over a decade testing Stoic ideas against work, parenting, training and setbacks. What survives goes into what he publishes, and when something doesn't work, he says so.
The Stoic Handbook includes a podcast of longer conversations, practical philosophy and guided meditations, along with essays, videos and courses. One example is a guided Stoic meditation for stepping back and seeing a difficult moment in a wider frame. Donald J. Robertson, author of How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, has written that Brooks "is a great source of information, and his content has helped many people get turned on to modern Stoicism."
Lineage & Inspiration
The teachers, lineages, and practices that shape Jon Brooks's path.
Roman Emperor, Stoic
The Stoic Handbook draws practical daily-practice material from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations.
Stoic Philosopher
Epictetus's dichotomy of control underpins Brooks's teaching: you can't control events, only your next action.
Stoic Philosopher
Seneca's letters and essays are among the classical Stoic sources the podcast applies to modern anxiety.
Philosophy
The core of his work: Stoicism taught as a trainable daily practice, not theory.
Practice
He uses guided meditation, including on Insight Timer, to train Stoic responses to reactivity and anxiety.
