Karina Smith is a Melbourne-based Doctor of Chinese Medicine and a Yin Yoga teacher, teacher trainer and educator. After a lifetime of dancing and years working on productions, shows and festivals, yoga arrived as an unexpected source of self care and restoration, and her relationship to movement shifted from performance to something private that nourished her mind and body.
She trained with the Australian Yoga Academy in Prahran and went on to study in India at the Shantarasa Institute, completing a 350-hour teacher training at each. She has also studied with Bernie Clark and Paul Grilley. A teacher for more than a decade, she has taught at Melbourne studios including Yoga Flame, West Side Yoga and Estuary, and is a lecturer for the Australian Yoga Academy. In 2018 she launched her own Yoga Alliance Australia accredited Yin and Functional Anatomy teacher training.
Her love of Yin Yoga led her to Chinese Medicine. She graduated in 2019 and runs a clinic in Newport, offering acupuncture, herbal therapies, moxibustion and cupping, with a particular passion for supporting women's relationship with their menstrual cycle. She also holds a B.A. in Contemporary Arts with a Dance major.
Worth Knowing
Dr Karina Smith is a Melbourne practitioner working in the inner west who holds a Doctor of Chinese Medicine and practises as a classical acupuncturist, Yin Yoga teacher and educator, and NLP facilitator. Her path is unusual for the yoga world, since her Insight Timer teacher page describes a career in contemporary dance that led her first to yoga and then into Traditional Chinese Medicine. That history shows in her teaching, which pairs a dancer's attention to movement with a clinician's interest in how the nervous system responds. Her Bachelor of Health Sciences majoring in Chinese Medicine gives her Yin Yoga instruction a theoretical grounding that many Yin teachers do not have. Followers tend to value that she moves between clinic, classroom and podcast microphone without treating them as separate worlds. Her output favours careful, anatomically literate instruction over spectacle.
