Bhikkhu Jayasāra, known to most as Bhante J, is an American-born Buddhist monastic and the founder of Maggasekha ("Student of the Path"), a Buddhist organization he is building with friends and the lay community. Its teachings and practice are rooted in the Early Buddhist Texts and the Theravada Forest Tradition.
Born in 1978 and raised Catholic, he came to Buddhism in his late twenties and took refuge and precepts as a lay disciple on Vesak in 2008. In 2011 he took the Eight Lifetime Precepts with Bhante Gunaratana and was given the name Jayantha. He went on to live at the Bhavana Society in West Virginia from September 2014. He became an Anagarika in March 2015, a Sāmaṇera in October 2015, and a Bhikkhu in October 2016, ordaining under Bhante Gunaratana.
When he was looking for accounts of others' journeys into homelessness, he found little to learn from. So he began documenting his own, first as the vlog series "A Journey Into Homelessness" on the YouTube channel Maggasekha, and soon after on a Tumblr blog. He has kept up that record since 2012. His website also serves as his Dhamma blog, where he shares his own articles and talks alongside other Dhamma material.
Bhante J shares Dhamma and leads retreats, online and in person, across America. His retreats have included metta, mindfulness of death, jhana and the Noble Eightfold Path. He focuses on showing how the Buddha's ancient teachings are practical and pragmatic, and can be lived by people in the modern world, as he did himself in a professional career before becoming a monastic. One retreat participant wrote that he "has a special knack for bridging ancient text and western mind, great help for beginner westerners."
Maggasekha's wider aims include teaching in English and Spanish, sharing Dhamma materials in print and digital form, and, in the long term, forest monasteries and retreat centers in the Americas.
Worth Knowing
Bhikkhu Jayasara (known as Bhante J) is an American Theravada Buddhist monk ordained in 2016 under the respected teacher Bhante Gunaratana at the Bhavana Society in West Virginia—a lineage known for rigorous textual study and forest contemplative practice. What's distinctive about his path is that he came to Buddhism relatively late, in his late twenties, after being raised Catholic and working as a professional in the modern world, which gives his teaching rare credibility for secular listeners trying to understand how ancient practice applies to contemporary life. He founded Maggasekha ("Student of the Path") with friends to make the Buddha's teachings in English and Spanish freely available to seekers in the Americas, and his retreat leadership draws students specifically looking for instruction rooted in the Early Buddhist Texts rather than pop-Buddhism or Westernized rebranding. What appeals to his students is less charisma than clarity: retreat evaluations consistently note his skill at "bridging ancient text and western mind"—he teaches jhana, metta, mindfulness of death, and the Noble Eightfold Path as legible, livable practices, not abstract philosophy. Based in Denver, Colorado, he's building toward establishing a forest monastery, signaling commitment to the contemplative lineage beyond retreat tourism.
