A Voice Between Worlds

Abi Sampa occupies a rare position in British music: she is a trained qawwali vocalist working to transplant one of South Asia's most spiritually charged musical traditions into the concert halls of the West. As an Associate Artist at London's Royal Albert Hall and a core vocalist with the Orchestral Qawwali Project, Sampa has become one of the most visible practitioners of Sufi devotional music in the United Kingdom, navigating the delicate balance between preservation and innovation.

Qawwali, for the uninitiated, is far more than a musical genre. It is a centuries-old practice of Sufi devotional expression, traditionally performed at shrines and dargahs across the Indian subcontinent. Its purpose is transcendence: through repetitive poetic verses, intricate call-and-response patterns, and escalating vocal intensity, qawwali seeks to induce spiritual ecstasy in both performer and listener. The form demands exceptional vocal control, an intimate knowledge of Urdu and Persian poetry, and the ability to sustain emotional crescendos that can last for hours.

Sampa brings classical singing training to this demanding tradition, allowing her to navigate the ornamental melismas and microtonal inflections that qawwali requires. But her significance lies not merely in technical proficiency—it's in her willingness to reimagine the context in which this music is heard.

Orchestral Fusion and the Rushil Collaboration

The centerpiece of Sampa's current work is the Orchestral Qawwali Project, a collaboration with Rushil Music that represents one of the most ambitious attempts to integrate qawwali with Western orchestral tradition. The project takes traditional qawwali repertoire—songs that would normally be performed with harmonium, tabla, and hand-clapping—and surrounds them with string sections, brass, and Western percussion.

This is not simply a matter of adding instruments. The orchestral arrangements expand the harmonic and timbral palette of qawwali, introducing chord progressions and instrumental voices foreign to the genre's historical practice. Yet Sampa and her collaborators maintain what they consider the tradition's "core devotional intensity"—the spiritual urgency that distinguishes qawwali from mere performance.

Rushil Music, the production entity behind the project, specializes in cross-cultural classical fusion, positioning itself at the intersection where world music traditions meet Western concert hall conventions. For Sampa, this partnership has meant access to orchestrators, arrangers, and performance spaces that few qawwali artists in the UK could otherwise reach.

The project has staged performances at the Royal Albert Hall and other prominent UK venues, bringing audiences who might never visit a dargah into contact with Sufi devotional practice. It's a hybrid sound designed explicitly for listeners unfamiliar with qawwali's shrine origins—a fact that is both the project's strength and its most contentious aspect.

The Royal Albert Hall Residency

Sampa's Associate Artist position at the Royal Albert Hall represents institutional recognition of her work's cultural significance. The venue, one of London's most iconic performance spaces, has in recent years committed itself to showcasing diverse musical traditions beyond the Western classical canon. Associate Artist residencies provide emerging artists with access to performance opportunities, production resources, and visibility that can transform careers.

For Sampa, the residency is a platform. It positions her not as a novelty act or world music curiosity, but as a serious artist working within—and expanding—a legitimate classical tradition. This distinction matters. Qawwali in the UK has often been relegated to community events or World Music festivals, contexts that can diminish the form's sophistication and spiritual gravitas. Sampa's presence at the Royal Albert Hall challenges these categorizations.

Cultural Significance and Reach

With over 27,000 Spotify followers, Sampa has built an audience that extends beyond traditional qawwali listeners. This listenership likely includes South Asian diaspora communities seeking connection to devotional traditions, world music enthusiasts drawn to fusion projects, and classical music audiences curious about non-Western forms.

What Sampa offers these varied listeners is access—not just to qawwali as historical artifact, but to qawwali as living, evolving practice. Her work raises essential questions about cultural translation: What is lost when devotional music moves from shrine to concert hall? What is gained when orchestral arrangements make centuries-old poetry legible to new ears? Can spiritual ecstasy survive institutional presentation?

These are not questions Sampa necessarily answers. But by pursuing her particular vision—classically trained, orchestrally augmented, institutionally supported—she keeps them alive.

A Tradition in Motion

Sampa's work matters because it insists on the continued relevance of qawwali in contemporary Britain. She is not a preservationist, frozen in reverence for tradition. Nor is she a disruptor, eager to dismantle the form for the sake of novelty. She occupies the more difficult middle ground: an artist deeply versed in qawwali's technical and spiritual demands, willing to place it in conversation with other traditions without erasing what makes it distinct.

In a cultural moment increasingly interested in hybridity, diaspora, and the movement of traditions across borders, Abi Sampa's voice—trained, devoted, and unafraid of the concert hall's formal constraints—offers one possible answer to what preservation can mean. Not museum display, but living practice. Not purity, but dialogue.
